Lots of people getting the white one in this thread. Is it because of preference or availability?

The store I was in this morning were out of black 16gb, and I wouldn't "settle" for a white one.

umm, think about it this way - at least from a status symbol perspective; if you have a white new iphone, theres no guessing what size it is, or how much you paid for it. lol. I just wanted it because of past experiences with psp and 5th gen black ipod video that showed scratches, and smudges like a mofo.

since i'm waiting for the touch 2.0 update, lemme ask this here:

-what are like the best 2 or three web-apps? there seems to be so many and maybe you guys have must-have favorites

-not an iphone question, but what's the best touch case with the slimmest form factor? i'm talking like a covering, not a flip case.

shit, never thought of that...maybe I'll wait til next week, I certainly don't want the white one at all.

There have been no reports of the white ones being more abundant than the black ditos. That was just the case in the store I went to.

I still like white glossy gadgets, even when Apple seems to be moving away from them, but I do find the disconnect between the black front and the white back incongruous.

I was at an ATT store but it was pretty crappy there too. Got to the line at 7:50am, roughly 150 people on line already.

Doors opened at 8 sharp. At 8:30 I had to ask an employee that was walking the line if they had even started selling the phones since the line had moved about 5 paces! She said they had so I timed the door and in 5 minutes time ONE person was let into the store from the line. I left at 8:45...

The girl did say they had enough phones to cover the people in line so they must have had a couple hundred. I wasn't going to wait a few hours only to be told that the black 16GB ones were sold out though.

So I went back to this store just now in case there was a slim chance of still getting one. The line was a lot smaller than it was this morning but they were out of the 16GB models. Crazy thing is some of the people that were standing a few places ahead of me this morning were still in line! They were *almost* at the store door lol This AT&T store was unable to process 150 people in four freaking hours. And that's not even taking into account the people that must have left at some point.

Thumbs up to AT&T/Apple for this fantastic launch!

not sure if this is common knowledge at this point but I was checking out 43 Folders and there was this blurb at the end of a post:

Nota frickin’ bene: How did I get screengrabs on an uncracked 2.0 iPhone? Easy. Click the Home button and the top (Power) button at the same time to capture a PNG of the current screen to the Photo Viewer (grabbable later via iPhoto)

Very cool.

Ready for chapter 2 of my bullshit UK experience?

So after queuing at 8, waiting for the store to fix it's system shit which took 30 mins, and being told they'd sold out after 5 people bought a phone, I went to work, then popped into carphone warehouse during my break and asked if they had a 16gb (8 too small for me) and they said no, they only have 1 8gb left, but they could mail order me a 16gb that would arrive the next day, so I did.

Then they called me up and said I needed to sign the direct debit, and that they actually had a phone for me I could pick up, so I went in on the way back from work and the dude handed me an 8gb... I said I ordered the 16gb, he said no it says here you ordered the 8gb, I said why would I mail order the 8gb when you have them in stock? He realised he'd fucked up and admitted they didn't have any 16gbs in stock anywhere that they could mail order me.

So I'm still without a phone, my last one broke.

Nice job O2, you just managed to cancel out everything that is good about Apple's customer service by the sheer bullshittery of your own. That's impressive.

So, I'm here in the apple store, been waiting since 5:30 AM. They took in about 30 or so people through 6 hours. Now I'm waiting for my phone. FINALLY.

But it's an Apple IT clusterfuck. So at least it'll have a well-designed (crashed) server. The downside is that the cost will be higher than your average IT clusterfuck (delayed/lost revenue) and Apple will just quietly fix the problem and never quite admit to it ever happening in the first place (how they seem to handle most flaws.)

Ok got mine activated earlier

I will be forever greatfull if someone can figure out how to make ringtones with itunes 7.7, i tried the old way..it isn't working

Fuck, I've not been able to activate either(OG iPhone with 2.0 firmware). It's bricked until it can sync with the apple store and I am RAGING at the error messge every couple seconds.

woooow

I just spent 5 hours in the fucking heat outside of an AT&T store and was 3 people away from fucking getting one.

Fuck people who have all their friends show up without waiting 15 minutes before they go inside.

Ended up doing priority Direct Fulfillment so I should have it in a few days, I guess.

thats really retarded

i got there at 9pm thursday night

the first 10 people in line (including me i was 5) became friends and took a notepad and made the first like 25 sign it

because it was raining, so if we got into our cars we would know where we were

we created our own society..then again they got like a 100 in

If you're signing up for .me - be careful. Newly discovered issue:

Apparently, Apple is allowing you to register any username you want on me.com and will gladly take your money. I was able to register 2 names I know for a fact are not available and are being used by .mac members. This is going to be one giant clusterfuck of usernames being taken back and refunds being given out when they get this mess sorted out. -and for some reason, no one is reporting this giant FAIL on Apple's part.

I think this store got.... 66? Last year they had 90. (and I was 9th in line then with only 4 hours waiting!)

urgh, fucking weak. Its widescreen, touch screen, GPS.. would be perfect for it. I cant justify buying stand alone sat nav or a stand alone new phone, an iPhone with sat nav would be perfect.

OK guys which twitter app are we using? and which GPS Photo tagging App are we using.

Also that iFob app is that app that lets you discover near by Phones any good?

FUCK!

When I installed 2.0 it deleted all my contacts and everything! FUCK FUCK FUCK...

I went to Syncing in the iTunes Preferences, but the last saved previous iPhone settings/memory was right after it deleted EVERYTHING!

Is there any place in some folder that still might have all my contacts?

PS3 all over again in Vancouver. I walk by 5 or 6 shops just to get to work and every one of them had lineups over what I suspect their stock was. Even hole-in-the-wall retailers had 10-15 people.

May have to try calling Rogers and seeing about an order...

Really bizarre sequence last night. Went in to one of the slightly bigger outlets to get something for my current phone, and this old (late 50's, I guess?) man - wife at his side - skips through the service line and tries to get the attention of the guy at the counter. Not the sort of guy who you would expect to want the phone day one at all.

"When is this iPhone out?"
The salesguy says tomorrow morning.
"How big is the line?"
A quick silence in the store. Did he really just ask him to predict the future?
"You don't know how big is the line? Why not?" He seemed pretty irritated at this point. The salesguy said he would find out in the morning. He knew some people wanted to come early but obviously no lineup yet (this was thursday during business hours!)

He left without another word. *shrug*

So, here's a Canada story. Went to a mall in montreal (cote vertu for anyone local) to a Fido kiosk at around 8:45. I got ticket number 5 and was told there were only 5 16 GB models 3 black, 2 white. Around 20 or 30 people showed up after it opened.

I wanted white and was able to get one. lucky me. there were around 25 iphones total. I was surprised so few were 16 GB models...

anyway, the entire Rogers/Fido activation server system went down like a brick at 10 AM sharp (when most stores actually opened - only a few opened at 9 AM). and it took 2.5 HOURS to sell 5 iPhones.

Not to activate them, mind you. that only worked for one. Just to create 3 year contracts for customers and charge for the phone. A Rogers store next door had the same problem, only the lineup was even longer there.

And, once the server system got back up, slowly, my guy tried to add the data plan but no luck. waited for 45 minutes. nothing. He said he would text me once he had it ready (hopefully before 5 PM today) and said I could activate from iTunes at home.

So, I'm at home now, with an iPhone that I can't use and iTunes is still crazy busy and can't activate the phone for voice calls.

Do companies do any sort of server analysis pre-launch for big devices to prevent this kind of crap? ugh. or do they figure it's worth the pain as they don't want to add capacity to their serves due to cost?

anyway, across canada, I'd be surprised if more than 100 or 200 people actually have usable iPhones now :\

WTF? Now iTunes is saying 1.1.4 is the current version. STOP TOYING WITH ME APPLE!

Yeah that's what I'm getting.

Whatever, I'll get it when I get home later on tonight. All I really want is Pandora.

According to an ATT rep I just spoke with, the problem is with Apple's Short Tether system, which is the Apple-side system that does the last part of the activation. I got my $36 activation fee refunded just by calling their customer service, and also had additional $59.50 credited back to my account in addition. I'm pissed that my iPhone isn't working, but at least I got $95.50 of my iMoneys back!

Twittelator: It's completely free, has no ads, and somehow caches better than Twitterrific.

Thanks man, Twittelator it is. Why is the other one so high up in the free chart app? I blame the bird!

This, plus some jerk-ass dinging my car's paint job between yesterday and today, and I got stuck behind not one; but two morons who didn't know how to use a turning lane on the way to work today. . . YARARRRRRARRRARRRRR!

Needless to say listening to lots of Pro-Pain very loudly. >:|

get a silicone case and a screen protector, gives you full access and protection as long as you dont throw darts at the screen or anything

Because people know Twitterrific from their PC/Mac I guess. The only thing I will give it is that it has a slightly better interface but ads and the bad chaing are killing it for me.

Goddammit I fucking need my phone to work right now...this seriously destroys my long-term faith in apple.

go back to last year and remember how many people couldn't activate at home via iTunes. it's basically the same kinda crap. server overload on day one.

it still sucks, but it's not the first time this has happened :\ you could have lost your faith last year :)

We all need our phone to work, this fucking process....

Last year I didn't run into this issue, but I did buy the iPhone on Day 2. Also, there was a $600 premium that kept many potential buyers at bay compared to this new launch.

Can't activate. Blah. Also, because my iPhone was stolen and my phone number was turned off, I couldn't qualify for the upgrade. I had to pay full price and was told to come BACK to get my money back, after talking to someone on customer service. Awesome.
