Being an iPhone nooblet I have a few questions...

Safari seems to be pretty flakey. It often just crashes and leaves me back at the home page. This pretty normal behaviour?

I synced the phone with my music/photos on my work iMac, now I'm at home and have installed iTunes on my PC and authorised it. Is it possible to sync down to the PC iTunes from the phone, or if I try and sync will it blow away everything on the phone?

Hmm, has never crashed on my 1st gen iphone.
Even with multiple windows open.

It happens to me too, depends on the website. If it's too intensive, with too many pictures, it'll quit out to the home screen. Sometimes a hard reset helps, but not always.

Does it on GAF for me without fail on the monthly show us your pickup thread.

anyway to get contacts back? I already tried restoring from back up

Do you not have them on your computer? Check under the Contacts tab and make sure it's checked to sync from Outlook (or whatever you use to manage your contacts).

This is Phoenix reporting from Lenox mall in Atlanta where clusterfuck watch hour 10 begins for people waiting for iPhones.

What time is the store closing? Or are they just servicing people that were in line?

nope, I use Thunderbird and never thought to do a second back up, since I assumed itunes did it

You call it a clusterfuck, I call it iSchadenfreude.

(Seriously, it's a phone. This is coming from a self-described gadget whore.)

So people are in line now for tomorrow's opening? I plan on getting mine Sunday at Lenox, do I need to get there exceptionally early?

it looks like I am one of the lucky ones. It "only" took me 5 hours from lineup at 9 AM to activated phone...

guys, seriously, download aurora feint when you can. it's panel de pon "with mana"!

How long does the firmware update for the older iPhone usually take? It's been stuck on "Restoring iPhone Firmware for awhile and my iphone has the graphic of a cord going to iTunes with "Slide for emergency."

It takes a little bit, just let it sit there for 5-10 minutes. I think the whole update took me like 20-25 minutes total.

I just feel like it isn't working. The "Restoring iPhone Firmware" window is greyed out and not moving...

I know, I know. It's screwed up. But once you get to hour 3 and you're in line... you're like, "shit, I don't want to just hop out of line with nothing to show for it." Then again had I known the duration of time I still had to go...I would've jumped out immediately.

:lol I know exactly what you mean, I was telling myself the same thing. I kept telling myself what's one more hour, what's another 20 mins, etc. By the time it was over I stood in line for like 7 hours :(

yeah, i probably would have had to wait like 2.5-4 hours this afternoon and I knew I had to decide in the first 15 minutes if I was staying or not. I decided the Brewer game was more important....they just lost.

Anyone? I'm thinking about just unplugging it!

this happened to my friend today. She was installing the 2.0FW and itunes crapped out on her, and her phone was stuck with that picture you have, the usb cable pointing to the earth, slide for emergency ect.

She had to call AT&T to get it fixed... Maybe your itunes died during the update because of today

YES. The time to go through the process is at least 15 minutes per person. A short iPhone line is actually a LONG wait.

Anyone know how long it takes for a number to be ported over? I got my phone set up at around 10:15 in the Apple Store, but iTunes was down so I wasn't able to activate it through that until about just before noon. Currently my phone lists that its my old cell phone's number and if I call out from the phone it will be shown as my old cell phone's number, but when anyone calls my old cell phone number, it ends up at my old cell phone. So far I can't receive calls on my iPhone cuz of this. It's been more than 8 hours since I activated on iTunes.

hmmm when I did my iphone (original) last year, I ported my number over and within 15-20min all my calls were coming to the iphone.

I would call AT&T tomorrow to find out..

Just got an iphone (my first cellphone/ipod so bear with me) and got a couple of questions:

1. Is there any easy way to get my video (avi) files on the phone? If not, how could I convert a lot of files fast?
2. Anyway to get mp3 files as my ringtone? If not anyone got a site with cool (video game) ringtones?
3. Any way to put files on without using Itunes?
4. Can I check hotmail accounts in the email part?
5. Is there an MSN application (like AIM)?

thanks for your time :D

1. VisualHub
2. GarageBand
3. Sure, but why?
4. Yep.
5. Nope.

1. I don't think there's an easy way, per se. File conversion takes time, even for relatively small files (like 30 min TV shows). I think Handbrake is probably the best conversion program.
2.

I'll spare you the ridicule for not searching, especially for what can be found in the last 100 posts (1 page for me).

3. Probably, but it's not really recommended.
4. Yes
5. Don't think so.

So, uh, what time should I get to the store for getting my phone Sunday morning, where I won't have to wait (upon opening) for a ridiculous amount of time?

Hmm. I'm guessing more apps have been added today?

After moving over to the 'official' 2.0, I've seen some stuff I hadn't seen before. Perhaps I just missed it before.

EA's Tetris
Crash Bandicoot Racing
South Park ImaginationLand

Even an iPhone version of that Comic Book application Mac has.

Anyone tried any of these?

Wow, Crash Bandicoot Racing looks really sharp from the screenshots; I'm tempted to buy it...

Atlanta capacity decreased to 2 people doing the activations.

At one point there was NO ONE doing the activations. They were supposed to be split up into teams (one set you up with AT&T and got your phone, one did the activation), but that didn't happen. When I picked up mine, I talked with one guy, who had to go all the way to the back to get my phone first off, then he signed me up for the service plans, then walked me over and did the activation. I dunno wtf was going on at that store today.

Actually I just called them now and the solution was simple. I'm surprised their online FAQ doesn't mention it nor did they tell me at the store today. All I had to do was power off my old phone. Once I did that, instantly ported. They told me earlier today that it would just notify me when done. Hurray, finally on my new phone.

Clusterfuck - word used to describe what happens when Apple releases a new iPhone.

If only the launch of a new mac was met with such clusterfuck-anity.

So I asked the guy at apple if the old Iphone cases would work on the new 3g phones and he said yes. I thought they didnt work? I need to get a case with a clip but there arent many good ones to choose from..

Speaking of launch lines...

I went to my local apple store at around 8:45, and there had to be 100 people, so I walk into the store to look at some accessories, and the girl at the front door was rather rude...

Clerk: excuse me can I help you?
Me: No. Just looking for some accessories for my iphone.
Clerk: Well, do you know what you want??
Me: No. Just looking
Clerk: (sigh) well the accessories are over on the wall on the right side of the store.

Then she let me pass. Now I know she is stressed and all, but shit at least try to be nicer to customers.

I did handle one of the demo 3G phones and it is definitely lighter, but other than, not worth all this hassle
