I'm still not convinced some of the constant restoring done by people in this thread is even necessary. I've never done a full restore, and my phone is chugging along.

I agree. I think some people are getting frustrated with some of the issues and instead finding an exit via a restore. I'm sure it does make the phone more responsive for a while, but it's only temporary. We really need an actual fix from Apple.

So im possibly getting one, just one question, when ATT says its 69.99 for the base plan, does that mean your bill is actually 69.99? Or how much over is it considering you follow all rules within your plan to avoid extra cost?

I've noticed the application update problem in my iTunes as well.

Of course, one workaround is to update on the phone itself. After the sync it will adjust accordingly.

Still, good to know others are seeing the same message.

"On Friday, we posted a short roundup of what's expected in iTunes 8 thanks to the rumortastic stylings of Kevin Rose. The Pandora-like Genius feature, Genius Sidebar, Grid view, and more are all said to be included. Although the general web consensus was that it would probably land on next Tuesday's Apple Special Event, we were skeptical.

Well, that skepticism was unwarranted, it seems. A person close to the situation has informed us that, as of this morning, iTunes 8 is finally confirmed for September 9. This person conveyed that much of what Rose claims is in iTunes 8 is correct as well. So, our hunch was wrong. And we're glad, because it sounds pretty cool, too.

Another little birdie told us that it's widely expected within some Apple circles that iPhone 2.1 will be released on September 9. We were told that, aside from what we already know about iPhone 2.1 from leaked info on the web, there are other parts to 2.1 that were specifically removed from developer seeds in order to keep them secret from the world. This both excites and worries us, because if true, then there are features coming in the newest firmware that have not been widely tested outside of Apple. On the other hand, we're suckers for a surprise.

All we can say is that Tuesday can't come fast enough for the rumor mill."

I used to never care about Apple conferences. Now I can hardly wait. Maybe they'll replace that hole that Nintendo left when they decided to disappoint at 3/4 events per year.

It's not too hard to understand people's complaints, considering they are all valid. Is it such a hard concept to grasp that people absolutely adore the phone, and yet be incredibly frustrated and annoyed with all its problems at the same time?

I love the iPhone as much as anyone in this thread. It has revolutionised the way I work and many things in general. I could never imagine not having one anymore, because it really does give you so many amazing benefits. But to love it so uconditionally that you don't voice your concerns over the horrible problems with it? Well that's a bit silly in my opinion.

Last week I was away from work and at training in another part of the city. I was excited to have a device like the iPhone at something like this for the first time, because if I got bored I could IRC, I can check my emails, I can do a number of things. But all last week, pretty much exactly after lunch time, I lost full coverage while everyone else using other phones still had coverage. My phone wouldn't even let me receive phone calls or send sms.

Then there's the horrible lag when it does work. Using google maps to find your way around a part of the city you haven't been in before I thought was going to be a dream. Instead it became very furstrating. Trying to type in something while there's horrendous keypad lag was killing me. You sort of need something with a lot more responsiveness while you're travelling in a car navigating your way around 1 way streets etc. But instead typing and even backspacing spelling errors was a chore, rather than a joy.

Then there are all the application crashes, lags etc. I've lost count how many times I've died in some of my games because the phone lags for about half a second every now and again. Not to mention the game just dropping to the 'desktop' every now and again, losing my progress entirely.

So really, defending the phone is one thing. I love it too, beyond any device I've ever owned. But for fucks sake, I'm going to whinge about its faults as much as I like because they are so fucking frustrating.
He called it the "worst Apple device ever"... I don't think you are allowed to have any love for something once you proclaim it the worst. Being frustrated is one thing, but if you're constantly frustrated by something to the point where you have to spout bile once a day on the internet to people who don't care... it's time to think about ditching the source of your frustrations. But they don't. It's like they hold onto it so they have something to bitch about at this point.
Do you clearly see the difference between mere disappointment and the shit we've got going on here?

I'm running 2.0 on my unlocked and jailbroken 1st gen iPhone and I want to update to 2.0.2. Am I going to lose all of my save files for games and apps, or will they back up in to iTunes with the apps?

Features not widely tested outside Apple - ah crap....
Yeah, would you prefer they have a repeat of last time, where they released a whole bunch of stuff before they thought it was ready? Cuz THAT really worked out for them last time. Besides, it's the developers' own fault because they've proven time and time again that they can't keep a secret to save their lives, so it's a lot more sensible to keep features close to the vest, in case they can't get them implemented properly in 2.1 and require further testing, leading to a whole bunch of "bait-and-switch" crap from bloggers and the press because the dev kits promised features they never implemented in the final release (see: Airport Disk functionality with Time Machine in 10.5 betas)

Andrew Mager has posted (via iPhoneSavior) an image from outside the Yerba Buena Center in San Francisco where Apple will hold its "Let's Rock" media event on September 9th, 2008.

The large multi-story banner shows one of Apple's iPod silhouette ads clearly suggesting a major iPod-related event. Persistent rumors have predicted that Apple will introduce a tall iPod Nano, a new iPod Touch, as well as iTunes 8. There are also suggestions that Apple could introduce the 2.1 iPhone firmware with some previously unannounced features.

A few last minute tidbits:
- We've heard a few more reports of Apple telling reporters that this event will be a "big deal" and urging them to come. While it's hard to read too much into this sort of hype, it does not appear to be typical practice for Apple.
- DaringFireball suggests that there will be iPhone news at the event.
- While we won't be providing live web coverage, we will offer links to all available coverage as well as SMS updates via Twitter.
- The event will take place on September 9th, 2008 at 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern.

Ehh iam hyped i really really hope its more than just ipod updates .. please apple ... please!

Does AT&T honor corporate discounts for iPhone plans? I know when the phone was released they did not. Has anything changed? Also, are any text messages included in the base plan? It seems odd the unlimited plan doesn't included messaging like Verizon.

K, so quick question guys, a friend of mine has a 1st gen iPhone, really early firmware, unlocked, jailbroken. What's out there to update his firmware, and get it unlocked and jailbroken again?

And are 3G's unlock-able yet?

Thanks. :P

yup. Just got it last week. Discount on voice and data plans.

Damnit. I'm glad they accept them now but it doesn't make by decision any easier. I'm seriously considering canceling my Verizon account for an iPhone.

Developers testing their own code ensures that you're going to get quality? That's an interesting take on things. Last time they had a shitload of bug reports from external developers that they ignored and released the product anyway. Every developer in the iPhone 2.0 beta knew full well that that OS was going out the door rushed and shitty - but Apple had a date to keep and consumers suffered as a result.

I'd rather it be released tested and working and not before then.

Better

Maybe if Apple doesn't want beta leaks stealing the thunder of the 2.1 features it should just announce it and demonstrate it at the event and set a date for, say, the end of the month, with it being released to developers ahead of time. Apple then has time to iron out any bugs and make sure it's as solid as 1.1.4 - too much to hope? - before release. It's not like Snow Leopard or other major software would have to be released on the day it was officially announced, right?

Of course, setting a date for 2.0 so that everyone was refreshing iTunes on release day worked out so well...

I would like to see Tuesday's event include an announcement that NBC's coming back to the iTunes Store this season. Not like I buy much TV off iTunes, but every now and again there's a new episode of The Office I'd buy if legally available (for viewing on the iPhone/Apple TV).

I'd like to see NBC announce a Hulu app :D

Or that Hula would simply have an iPhone version available.

"All" we're waiting for is support for Flash on the iPhone. As soon as we get that, we get a shitload of functionality across the board.

Since you always seem to have good knowledge any idea what the hold up is. Money, technical issues, etc?

Don't blame the product because you fucked up.

I fucked up?

Apple releases a firmware which fucks up the phone's functionality.

Apple releases another firmware which persists in fucking the functionality.

Apple releases yet another firmware which allegedly fixes the problems caused by 2.00.

Shit still doesn't work properly.

Go write some more scripts for Hollywood to sit on monkeyboy.

My buddy was showing me his Instinct this weekend, and it's pretty fucking rad.

Once my contract is up with AT&T I may go with that phone instead of this turdfest.

When's this gonna get cheaper?
If you mean the iPhone... what? It's one of the cheapest smartphones around. At least in Canada. Only cheaper is the N95 and that's just for new customers. If you're an existing customer, iPhone is the cheapest smartphone. Everything else is at least $100 more than it.

I am most likely extremly late to the party. But Today I just bought a couple of 3g phones. Now my question is, Has the 3g been unlocked so I can use T-mobile on it?

If someone can point me to the right direction that would be great.

I got myself a MobileMe account and it's such a great companion to the iPhone. Automatically synced contacts is such a great feature.

I wish it worked with me, it always crashes when it tries to interact with my Outlook. Thank god it's a trial

Yeah, I'm using Leopard, which is why my experience is, for the most part, working.

I'm fairly happy with the features on the iPhone so far. MMS would be nice considering I'm paying $30/month for text messages, but it's not a deal breaker for me. But I would be happier if Apple announced somekind of update that fixes my call drops and the shitty 3G/EDGE service I get in Chicago.

You may want to read some reviews on the Instinct before jumping on it. While it does rate higher than most of the other "iPhone Killers", it has it's own host of issues, and lacks true applications yet. A know a recent firmware upgrade helped with some stuff, but everything I've read on it suggests that it's not nearly as polished as the iPhone, and that includes the 2.0 firmware upgrade, bugs and all.

Let him jump on that turd, if only to spare us the constant bickering.

One of the secret features for 2.1? It would certainly be a megaton announcement.

I'd much rather have MMS at this point. There have been so many times where my girlfriend has wanted to send me picture messages, but couldn't because it's not supported.

Not if they charge for it. AT&T have set out to nickel-and-dime their customers. Flash, however unlikely, would be much better received by everyone.
