Fucking phone has been backing up for the past four hours and has yet to install the new firmware.

I had to cancel out of a backup yesterday and a few times in the past month. It just hangs there.

Well that was fun :(

About two hours ago I tried to update to 2.1. It crashed in the middle of it. It was then locked into "recovery mode" and needed a restore. When I restored it didn't work.... twice. I had to downloaded the newest iTunes and restart my computer... go through the restore process.... Now I'm restoring from my backed up iPhone file.... let's see how much of my settings survive the ordeal.... :(

Least my phone works... I was wondering if I'd be struggling without one for a rendezvous with my ex this weekend...

My update went smooth and was surprisingly fast. I didn't have to resync any of my media this time (including apps) and in all it took less than 10 minutes. This was faster than the previous firmware install. For people who've never upgraded an iPhone, it probably seemed like a long time, especially if it required re-syncing of content which it sometimes does.

Everything is working and the keyboard does seem to be more responsive.

I currently have 2.0.1. Is there a way for me to update straight to 2.1 without having to install 2.0.2?
I didn't have any glaring issues with 2.0.1 so didn't bother updating to 0.2

EDIT: Nevermind, i just went to itunes help and check for updates and it found 2.1

I downloaded 2.1, then hit restore to format it before it installed the update.

This thing is running ultra fast in comparison now. Way more bars reception, no sluggishness and the genius integration is niiice.

Here's a bunch of undocumented feature updates i found on macrumors:

1) Updated apps keep their position on the iphone screen
2) You can pause apps while installing by tapping the icon (thx mavis)
3) 3G/E icon is no longer encased in a "box"
4) Triple clicking on the mic now brings you to the previous track (thx sealit)
5) Genius playlists: click the artwork to reveal the song's progress and there is a genius icon to build a play list on the fly (thx jsgreen)
6) You can set the clock to 12 hour with AM/PM in the UK (thx Kardashian)
7) You can restrict the Camera (thx Kardashian)
8) In the ipod function, when looking at a list of 'songs' the album title is listed below the song name (thx tombee)
9) Itunes now displays how much space is taken up by "Applications" (thx mark34)
10) Bluetooth headsets now work with visual voicmail (confirmed with plantronics bt headsets) (thx trihard)
11) New podcasts and videos have always had blue bubbles next to them to indicate that they are new, but with 2.1, if you have "half-played" media, it will include a half filled in blue bubble.
12) Videos now fade out if you press the home button. Beofre, they would cut out abruptly.

That's my home town! I live in Denton now for UNT

Also, WTF on the itunes 8 podcasts
:)

Hi neighbor. Bedford is where my office is, just off 183 and 121.
I'm moving just south of Denton to the tippy top of northwest Carrollton in a few days.

Yes! - that half second of "Bugger" after you skip and realise you did indeed want to listen to that song after all is gone, woo :D

Yes! Now I don't have to scrub through old podcasts to see if I didn't finish any...

There's a decent little first look on Ars Technica that has screenshots of some of the major new features if anyone's interested.

I have to agree with them that 2.1 so far feels like 2.0 coming out of beta. This is how it should have released.

Dear Apple,

Please add this to iTunes.

Thanks.

Updated to 2.1 this afternoon and it's definitely a step in the right direction - this is how the iPhone should've launched on July 11th.

Agreed.

Although, realistically, one might instead say that Apple could have delayed the launch till September. Finite resources and all that. They just weren't ready in July but committed to launching despite this fact.

I used it all day today and didn't experience any keyboard lag, any crashes, battery indicator seemed to remain high despite heavy email use. about damn time.

Keyboard lag seems to have gone for me too (worst in SMS). Genius in the iPod app is nice too, seems to actually work and is a really nice on the go feature.

Had this problem too. Only got my phone today, so I was shitting it!
Sorted it now though, and now I can finally add music and my contacts! :lol
Loving the phone so far though!:D

It's always a few steps forward and a few steps back with iTunes.

I mean, why did the take away the sizing options for video? WHY?

Anyway to disable backup when updating? This is gonna take 5 hrs, fucking ridiculous. There's no way to cancel/stop backup.

Uh, View menu. Or right-click the video while it's playing.

Thanks. Maybe. What about keeping the video window above all other windows? I have the options checked but it's not working.

let's see how safari handles replying to a thread on neogaf. It seems like it's much more responsive but the keyboard still gets slow when you scroll to the far right of the screen. Still a huge improvement.

I'm having an issue in 2.1 where if I click reply to an incoming text message, it displays the wrong conversation entirely. Sent messages go to the right person, but with the amount of texts I get this could end up being problematic.

edit: Sometimes the text message sound will also play a good five or six minutes after actually receiving the text. Anyone else having these issues?

Just got an iphone today, I have a question about the mail, every time I set my email accounts I get about 50 old emails that i don't want to read. Is there a way just to receive new emails through my phone, and not have old emails saved on my phone.

It's in Settings -> Mail.

Why does it matter anyway?

Have you ever considered changing your username to "Liu Kang Being A Condescending Ass"? It has a good ring to it.

Maybe you could get a picture of Liu Kang wearing a donkey costume as your avatar?

Just an idea!

Because I don't want to see old mail on my iphone, It still shows me the most recent emails. I just want it to show me new emails, that I receive from now on.

So batch delete the old ones and move on with your life.

I think the minimum is 25 recent messages =\

Yes, and it still lags up each and every time I try to reply to one of these posts!

Wow! You guys have a lot of issues with your iPhone and GAF. I replied to a post on GAF yesterday, pre 2.1 and had no problems. So weird, but I guess I'm lucky with Safari.

Even if I delete the emails more start uploading into my phone. I can't seem to do batch delete, how is it done?

Hit the "Edit" button, tap on all the messages you want to delete. Hit the "Delete" button. Simple!

Don't delete those old emails unless you really want them deleted from your email account.

edit link fixed.
How do you find stuff like this?
Since it's brand new, I can't find it by searching normally in iTunes or the phone's app store.
Only via links.

Oh, and thanks for the link!

From reading the description, these messages would be free?
It sends SMS too, no way they'd allow an app that bypasses AT&T's SMS plans?

Yeah, only a direct link to Flutter worked.

I got it (and get most of my iPhone apps from these feeds in my Reader:

Anyone having trouble using AIM with the new update? It's telling me that I need a network connection to use it which I clearly have posting this. I have 3 to 4 bars on 3G. Also ouch I'm getting some keyboard lag posting this.

Wait...who's the bloody idiot that didn't add shake to shuffle to the iPhone this update?

Heh, it's probably been 10 months since I've played the iPhone in anything OTHER than shuffle, so I don't really get it.

Did anyone see an improvement in the 3G's battery life?
Quoted for bumping. Seriously anyone notice any great improvement with battery life. This is the only thing holding me back from getting an iPhone.

It's too early for me to tell. I didn't use it much today.

Is last.fm failing to stream for anyone else? And have Canadian customers had any issues with 3G today? It's been slow as hell for some reason.
