I'm using the neogaf app, how do I scroll down quickly?

This is the one peeve that really bothers me about the iPhone and I really wish Apple would do something with Safari itself to handle that. Ideally I would like double taping the phone's info bar to bring you to the bottom of the page if you are currently viewing the very top of the page.

See my post:

http://www.ipuhelin.com/en/safariplus/

Go to that page on your iPhone and follow the directions. There is a bookmarklet for scrolling to the bottom of a page. Highly useful.

So I finally got my broken iphone today.

I successfully got it into DFU mode and the screen eventually turned from black to white (didn't launch the bootloader). Windows detected it via USB. Went into iTunes to restore it. However, I got an error -9, and so I decided to reboot my iPhone.

However, upon rebooting, the iPhone turned off. In fact, now it won't even turn on?

Suggestions?

The Iphone is simply easy to use. It's like the Nintendo Wii of the phone world. The phone applications such as contacts, checking messages, texting are about as simple as it gets. It reduces costs while catering to an elderly crowd.

My dad had an Ericksson w580, and he was thrilled after getting the iphone. He doesn't use it for anything else other than calling. For him it was the ease of use factor.
Save your breath, man, seems pretty obvious that people on GAF can't see the use of anything outside their own little bubble of power-user superiority, in spite of all of the potential cost savings and additional marketshare revenue it could earn them. They'll tell you that it's useless without the WHOLE internet in your pocket, not considering that some people don't give a shit about that.
And likening it to the Nintendo Wii on GAF really drives that point home.

Oh, question for those who hack their phones to pieces here:

I want to alter the BeejiveIM application package contents so that I can have a soundset in it that matches the one I use for Adium. Since the sounds are in the BeejiveIM.app package file, how can I replace minor pieces of the app package and can I do that without having to remove the whole app and manually upload it back in again?

it's not a sense of "power user superiority". it's just looking at how Apple has handled the iPhone app market and figuring they don't want to cut the experience down with a simpler product this early in the iPhone's lifespan.

the reason why most of us say a feature limited iphone nano won't be made is NOT because no one would buy it. But because we don't think Apple wants to sell it.

got it?

I can't answer your question about app packages but maybe you can get more info from other sites the macrumors forum. they have a subforum for hacking the iphone.

You can learn how to create systems sounds here
Then connect to your phone like the guide says (or use diskaid) and look under root/User/Applications/30A04036-FE72-41C6-A42C-A38BE2C42FAC/BeejiveIM.app/ for the sounds you want to change. Don't forget to back up.

NB: I'm not sure if 30A04036-FE72-41C6-A42C-A38BE2C42FAC will be the name of your folder. Just check the folders there one by one until you find the one with Beejive

So Apple suddenly wouldn't want to make scads more money than their current market segment allows? Funny, I always thought the major talking point about Apple is how much they LOVE money.
And I read a lot of comments in the other thread about how removal of features would "gimp" the phone and wouldn't be marketable, so the change of tune is news to me.

I know where to find the sounds themselves and how to make them (have my phone tricked out with Mario sound effects that I used to replace the main OS sounds using SSH), but I wasn't sure if I could just swap them out or if I required any further steps since the Beejive.app "folder" is actually a package.

Apple doesn't love money as in revenue, it loves money as in profit.

To introduce an iPhone nano, it'd most certainly have to come in at a significantly lower price point than the iPhone, meaning it would probably have a significantly thinner margin and would probably also detract from sales of the full size iPhone.

That is not to mention that an iPhone nano's presumable surge in revenue would also water down the value (and efficacy) of the Apple and iPhone brands. If you think "so what, money nom nom nom," just look at Motorola after it started rolling out mass market RAZR models.

It is absolutely impossible to get Terrell to think about anything other than market share.

Terrell, do you also think Sony should drop the price of the PS3 100 bucks to increase market share? despite the fact that they would lose more money on each unit sold if they did that?

there are major, major repercussions to these types of decisions that you seem to ignore every time they get brought up.

Apple is already making shitloads of cash on the iPhone. spending tons of R&D on a gimped phone (yes, without the app store and data plan revenue it would be gimped - in the eyes of Apple and AT&T) is not worth it for them to make, regardless of how many people might buy it.

I got an awesome bug today. It kept saying my phone was fully charged even though it wasn't (even if I plugged it in to charge).

The sad thing is it took me more than a day to realize that I hadn't plugged it in since yesterday evening and it shouldn't still say its full :lol

The Sony example is flawed for the exact reason that you mention, and Sony (unlike Apple) isn't in a position to take a financial hit. Not that I ever implied that Apple would sell a product at a loss, they never have in the past, after all. Besides, they already have their entry-level product for the wider mass market: the PlayStation 2 that is still in production. And their competitors have also filled that market sector with newer products with much more massive success in both portable and home unit divisions of that industry.

I don't understand why everyone is saying that it will "cannibalize" iPhone sales or that Apple will lose money. Those who are in the market for a smartphone will still have access to an iPhone. But the mobile phone market is SO much larger than that. You can't "lose money" from people who weren't going to buy the product as it exists right now due to the cost associated not being justifiable. You can't lose money from people who weren't in the market for your offered product in the first place, so why wouldn't you provide something for them? Apple didn't stop making the iPod classic when they introduced the nano, and the nano is easily Apple's more popular product.

And the part I bolded once again proves you can't even be bothered to read my posts in the first place, as I stated REPEATEDLY that data plan revenue would still exist by marketing smaller limited data plans at lower costs to the consumer. I also stated that a nano could have an SDK for it with data use and RAM limitations should Apple want to continue a content revenue stream for that platform rather than taking other avenues. The only thing I definitely proposed was to remove RAM-intensive apps like Safari to reduce PCB size and part costs for manufacturing. But whatever, if you're going to refuse to read, I see no reason to continue the debate any further and just prove the point I made about being unable to accept an idea outside of your own spectrum of understanding.

If you go back a page you can see me ask the same question. It was pretty painless. If you have the backup file use that. It only wiped the iPod part for me, which wasn't that hard to get back and running. Results may vary.

EDIT: Make that two pages back (assuming you use the same post count per page as I do).

I cant do that because I had to redo the whole hard drive aswell. There is no backup of any type

Neither did I. Just do your best to rebuild your collection then sync. For me at least, it only wiped the iPod portion of the device. Make sure to plug your iPhone in first and in iTunes "transfer purchases" as that will back up your apps into your new PC. Maybe write down some contacts just in case but I didn't lose any of that stuff when I did it. Maybe some others can chime in, as you and I may have some different variables.

Im hoping someone can help me with this. Recently I had to redo my whole computer which my Iphone was synced with and now I dont know what to do. If i sync it, wont it erase everything on the phone? Is there anyway around this?

so the comp is brand new at this point? when you connect it to your computer dont press sync contacts or anything. then go to the info tab and press sync to ms outlook or whatever and sync. outlook should then ask if u want to add "x" amount of contacts. it will sync to outlook. other things like pictures and texts and music will be erased though.

if you want to save pictures just open the iphone in my computer and take them about before syncing

Does anybody have any suggestions or programs to make images into a book like way? I'm pretty pathetic when I try to explain shit but lets just say I have a few images of a magazine, what would be the best way to view these on the iPod Touch?

I'm sorry if this was mentioned / answered before, but this thread is nearly 300 pages. Anyhow, I'm looking for an OS X app that will convert random video formats to iPhone format. I know there are a few out there, but I really don't have the patience to wade through the crap. If anyone has some good recommendations, they would be greatly appreciated.

Handbrake, universally known as the best DVD converter to any file format (practically) now converts other file formats too.

You may need VLC, since they now share libraries.

Thanks, I have both, but I was looking more for the drag-and-drop type app that will convert avi, mov, whatever into iphone format.

Um, handbrake?

Ok, so it's not so drag and drop, but all you do is point at the file, select iPhone, and hit go. Couldn't be easier (well apart from drag and drop).

How about iSquint then? It's no longer available I think, but you might find it on versiontracker or something.

Apologies, I didn't realize it was that easy in handbrake. Thanks for the quick education, I'm going to give it a try.

Edit: Just tried it, and it doesn't recognize a lot of my video files as a valid source. Any recommendations for some open source apps that will solve my problem?

So I take a picture and I thought it was funny so I figure, let me send this to my girlfriend. I look and look and look and there's no option for picture messaging... A quick internet search tells me the iPhone doesn't support it. Well what the fuck??? I assumed it was standard... shit.

I don't know if I would have gotten the phone if that were the case. I probably would have but damn... wish I knew that before I bought it.

Dude...

I bought this car last week, and was shocked to find that not only could it not fly but also not travel through time. I thought that shit was standard since 1985, if the car in Back to the Future has it how can mine not!?

Do you have the latest version?

And Vook, to be fair, it's not an unreasonable expectation. But it IS really old.

Anyway, BlackGoku: You can email it! :p

i thought handbrake only did DVD-->file conversions, not file-->file?

i use visualhub, works perfectly. it's not open source but its cheap.

I know I can email it, but it's troublesome.

F--- your analogy. It doesn't work.

I can get a camera phone with this feature for $30 but the iPhone, boasting its rich media and smart capabilities doesn't even have picture messaging? That's bullshit and I feel stupid for only just finding out. Fuck.

Dude... what? I'm mad because I can't do things that I've taken for granted on my previous phones. Another thing I wanted to do but couldn't was bluetooth a contact to a friend of mine. Didn't see any options for it.

I've enjoyed this phone for the two weeks I've owned it immensly but picture messaging is a very simple feature. I can't help but to think it is rediculous it hasn't been added in an update by now.

Hai guyz

Anyway, Mumsy just got an iPhone and I will be getting one soon. But one thing I noticed/glossed over was ringtones. We have a PC and I thought you could drag and drop an MP3 as a song and then select it as a ringtone, but no? Mind you I was tired so I might have just forgotten how to do it

Any help?

I figured I could email it but didn't know how to get it to her number. A quick search on google gave me some addresses. It didn't work with her number... she's with Alltel but it worked when I sent it to my sister who is on T-Mobile (as am I). I'll figure it out tomorrow after work.

Edit a small clip (there's a length restriction, i think 30 seconds), then export it to an m4a file. Then just change the extension to .m4p and import to itunes.

ah, the one weakness of any iPhone owner (myself included). MMSing.

iRinger. It's perfect. Look it up on youtube as to how it's used. It's a really good program for free.

Ok so it looks like the logic board is now shot on this thing.

Are there any programs I can use on a Jailbreak'd phone to download podcasts over 10Mb? I got a Safari plugin that lets me save media and then I play it with dTunes, but that has a nasty habit of messing up if I lose 3G connection and go to Edge. The iTunes 10mb limit is completely retarded, I thought I'd read this week they'd got rid of it :(

The reason I said "Dude..." is because the lack of MMS support has been thee biggest issue with the phone since the first model was released. Every discussion about the iPhone always mentions this along with the lack of copy and paste functionality.

Just surprised that you hadn't heard about until after you bought the phone a few weeks ago.

I hate to ask this but this thread is ginormous. My iphone arrives in about an hour or so and I wanted a decent (windows) guide to jailbreaking and unlocking it. Can anyone help a newb out?

Some recommendations on apps/games would also be great.

I love the iPhone and all, they really need to do something about the home screen. I have about 4 pages worth of applications and it's hard to find a certain app at times. The ideal setup for me would to be able to assign applications to groups (i.e. standard apps, games, social community, utility etc.). Make it happen Apple!

Or you could assign certain applications to a page!!

You know what makes me hate owning an iPhone?

That the iFart app is still the #1 PAID app on the app store. A fucking fart simulator.

God damnit...

That's why I feel really stupid. I'm more mad at myself than anything for not finding out.

I knew video recording wasn't standard. I knew cut and paste isn't a feature. I knew that going in but I somehow glossed over MMS. Eh, I keep slapping my forehead.
