So what's the deal with app compatibility on 3.0? I know Apple encouraged developers to make them compatible - but does that mean existing apps that haven't been updated, won't work, or probably will work, but possibly with a few bugs?

Mine all work fine. Obviously none have push yet. I expect alot of updates for like AIM and other apps to support push on day 1

Kk. Macrumors says some AT&T orders are still "In Progress" but have tracking numbers assigned to them.
Mine is 'In Progress' but I have a tracking number. Just hasn't been scanned in by UPS :)

EDIT: I ordered from the ATT store in person. It is being delivered to the store for a 7am pickup Friday for me ;)

SO most 2.2 apps are, for the most part, compatible already, even if it doesn't say it is? I assume the architecture is close enough for this to be the case, but wanted to be sure. What percentage of my apps should I expect to totally crap out on me come 3.0?

Azwethinkweiz said:
Same for me. Although I think I might cancel it and just pick one up from Best Buy.

Why? the AT&T one is at least guaranteed for Friday. Best Buy you have to wait in line in the morning. Though you can use rewards zone but thats about it.

All mine work fine. I don't have ALOT, but the important ones work fine

How much does having Push on multiple accounts slow down your iPhone?

I have noticed if I turn push off my phone (16gb 3g) instantly becomes more responsive. Anyone else notice this phenomenon and has it improved or been fixed under 3.0?

I use Push for both MobileMe (mail, calendars, contacts, bookmarks) and Exchange (mail, calendars). Push barely touches my iPhone 2G's battery life, but this thing gets insane battery life. Here's my usage breakdown.

I don't talk on the phone much, probably less than 10 minutes a day on most days (and almost always less than 20 unless I talk to my parents).

I plug it in every night next to my bed. I run some things off AC during that time. I usually listen to a podcast as I fall asleep (NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me if you're interested).

My phone sits at my desk most of the day not being used terribly much for communication, but I keep push on for both Exchange (work) and MobileMe (personal). Whenever a new email comes in my phone tends to get it before my Outlook (on the work PC) and definitely before Mail.app (on the Mac, but that's usually at home anyway).

I listen to a fair amount of music/podcasts at my desk. At least an hour on my lunch break and usually more if I'm crunching numbers or doing some other kind of repetitive task. I've had days where my headphones are in all 9 hours (including lunch).

I keep Wi-Fi on. I have the Ask to Join Networks setting off, but I have Auto-Join Known Networks setting on.

I have auto-brightness on and have the slider set to about 50%.

Even on the busiest of days, when I leave the office at 5:00 I still have at least a 50% charge left. The only exception is if I sink an hour into a system-intensive game (Peggle) on my lunch break, then it might be below 50%.

Non-Push related stuff.

My 3GS hasn't shipped yet (still prepared for shipping). I'm in Florida.

My 2.2.x apps run fine under 3.0GM. I'm pretty sure the only reason Apple is listing support for 3.0 apps in the store is to let you know they may take advantage of new features and you best update your firmware.

Yeah, I'm thinking about the reward zone money I'll be getting.

Whoa what now? The pone guy at Best buy said that making a preorder makes sure there is a phone there on Friday for pickup. I hope he is right.

Didn't think of that. i have 15 bucks pending.

Tried to use the Wolverine Feral Sense app after the 3.0 update, it crashes when it tries to bring up the camera.

Anyone else try this?

It was only a joke, although my wife would be fine if I bought one. I'm sticking with my original stance though, the 3Gs isn't a big enough upgrade from the 3G to warrant a switch. I'm waiting for next year's model, hopefully new screen technology, way better battery and *HOPE* support for 4G cell network that Rogers introduces next year.
I'd wait for next next year's model, just to be safe. :P

Meebo's also got an app coming out so I would hold out if I were you. Meebo's web-client is pretty slick and I'm excited to see what they offer for their App. Whatever it is, it's bound to be cheaper than BeeJive's option (I'm guessing ad-supported and paid versions will be available, seeing as meebo.com itself is already ad-supported).

not sure about push..

I don't see why they wouldn't support it, but right now they have a system in place to email you IM alerts.

Well I only use AIM, is it still worth using if you only use one IM service? I can't tell from reading the site what really makes it better than usng the official AIM client let alone worth paying money over something that's free. Could you elaborate why you find it so good compared to other clients?

Edit: Actually if there was one that did both AIM and Skype, I'd be set cuz those are the only two I actually use.

I've already got Beejive and I love it. I can't imagine another chat application actually topping it. They may equal it in features but not top. Also it's very smooth, never crashes for me. I tried other chat apps before buying Beejive and nothing else even came close. They were either really klunky and non-responsive or they crashed a lot. Beejive has none of those problems.

On sale for 9.99, what I paid for it. They regularly put it on sale at that price.

Well for starters, when I had AOL's AIM on my phone it liked to crash near-constantly. I've never had Beejive crash. The organization in-app is pretty great too. I just prefer the interface in Beejive to AIM. It feels like it'd be less steps to keep up several very active conversations in Beejive vs. AIM.

I am sure this must have been discussed in here, but I'll ask again.

I just *reserved* a 3Gs through the Apple site and selected that I will pick up at my local Apple store. Does anyone know if this guarantee's me a 3Gs on Friday? Or do I still need to get there super early to get one? If I have to get there super early then I'll just wait until I can walk in and get one.

Anyone have any idea's on this??

Thanks

Marty, I am with SuperPac on this. I too only use AIM on my iPhone as I didn't want to spend close to $20 for the beejive app, but AIM kept crashing on me and everytime my iPhone went into stand-by mode, I was eventually logged out of AIM. Finally Beejive was on sale for $9.99 and I purchased it and haven't looked back since.

It really is such a great chat client that I can't ever see myself going back to AIM on the iPhone!.

To all the BeeJive lovers, have you used Fring? A lot of websites like Gizmodo say it's the best IM client, what makes BeeJive better (and worth the price vs. free)?

I don't use beejive, but I can't stand fring. I kept it around for skype support, but ditched it when skype came out. I didn't like the interface and I didn't like it smooshing all my contacts from all sources. I use msn, but don't really need a messaging enough to pay more than a few bucks for, so I use palringo.

omg!!! I hated Fring! I hated it with a Passion.

The UI on it was horrible and like others on here, I only had it for the Skype, but since I hardly use Skype I got rid of it pretty quickly.

Stay away from Fring!!!

According to one of the employees at an Apple Store, a reservation to pick-up an iPhone 3GS at the store guarantees you nothing. They are still being sold on a first-come, first-serve basis. The employee I talked to indicated that they thought they would have plenty of iPhones, but according to the Engadget report today some stores have over 1000 reservations.

ok Thanks for the info!! I am still going to check with my local apple store. Like I said, if it doesn't guarantee me one, I will just go in after work on Friday, and if they have one I'll get it. If they don't, then oh well...

I'm psyched that I got my Bing email today letting me know I'm getting $105 cash back on my 32GB 3GS purchase. Now I need to buy the right cover, screen protector and headset for my new purchase.

Any suggestions? Or should we start a different thread for iPhone accessories?

I plan on going by at about 7:30 to check out the line. If it's crazy, I'll be back during my lunch break to see if there are any left.

I am not even going that early. I am going to ask them at some point this week if the reservation from their site means anything. If they say No, as you idicated in the other post, then I will just stop in after work to see how the line is. If it's crazy, then I will just wait until it dies down and get one. I am in no big rush for the phone...so I can wait ;)

Great cases, used to have a Rebel but I'm going to pair my 3GS with a Colors.

what's the point of offering reservations if it doesn't guarantee you a phone? isn't that a little strange?

i work for apple here in switzerland and we are not taking reservations, period. it's all first come first serve for us, and i think it's going to be pretty crazy on friday just going by the amount of questions and calls that we've recieved from customers.

i have the day off on friday, luckily, and i will be buying a phone from my store, but i'm gonna have to wait in line just like everyone else.

i'm excited, though! :)

you think i can get one saturday or sunday without waiting in line?

also from Walt Mossberg's twitter:

I think people are taking this a bit to literally. To me, it's just legal talk, so incase they over estimated inventory you can't sue them or something. They did close reservations when they ran out, I'm sure they'll have enough for everyone who reserved.

Holy fuck the rebel serpent is an awesome case that I had never seen before.

Damn, and my iSkin Solo just came in the mail :lol

Decisions, decisions.

hmmm, my Edge connection seems to have been "turned off" on my 1st gen iPhone. wonder if they got trigger happy with my account since i was able to secure a phone through apple on the 9th. anyone else w/ a gen 1 iphone notice this?

(w00t...checked apple.com on my orders..."prepared for shipment")

Is there a definitive apps thread? I know there's a game one, but a dedicated apps thread might be nice. I'd start it, but I'm not good at keeping an OP updated for more than a day or two :)
