anyone else encounter this problem?

happened after i installed something from the app store. the only way i could get the icons back to their original state was to do a hard reset, delete all the apps, and re-sync them.

I had a similar problem with the 3.0 beta firmware (b5?), but it hasn't happened to me since installing 3.0 final.

why is that? we know Video works on the 3G model... I have had when I jailbroke the phone and downloaded a Video app from cydia... so there is no reason why this couldnt have been in the 3.0 release...
The video from jailbroken phones looks like shit. The 3GS can do video properly, that's what Apple was waiting for.

Jailbrake iPhone video is like 240p video at 10-15 FPS, if you're lucky. It's not video as much as it's a series of poorly focused and lighted photos trying to mimic stop-motion animation.

The 3GS is 480p video at 30 FPS.

yeah i was trying to read up on it on google but all i found were references to it happening in the beta. i guess it's one bug that they didn't totally iron out yet.

i seriously have no idea how or why it happened. i just insalled an app and bam, it looked like that.

it only happened with the icons from downloaded apps btw, all of the preinstalled apps' icons were just fine.

So I just got the invisibleSHIELD from zagg after I dropped my first iPhone in a puddle and it cracked

I love this product- It's a little pricey but well worth it, I really recommend it to anyone who doesn't want a bulky case but wants reliable protection. There is even a life time guarantee witch it nice. Really psyched on this product.

Yep it is. Like I mentioned earlier, unless you tend to drop your phones alot, a invisibleshield protecting the back is all the protection needed.

The "video recording" on jailbroken 3G phones was janky as hell. It was just a series of still images stitched together that ran at like 15 frames per second in a low resolution. Apple would never put something like that out.

Well, they put out a phone with a prehistoric camera in it, so anything is possible :p

I can't get espn scorecenter to work. I get the "wait for installation" the first time I open it then it bounces back to springboard. Every other time after that, I get a trivia on the loading screening then back to springboard again. I had the same problem on 2.2.1 as well. Is it just me?

Thanks Costanza et al for the jailbreaking advice. I'm definitely going to hold off until the 3.0 jailbreak update comes out and then re-list the phone unlocked because they definitely sell for even more. I'm thinking $300+.

This really takes the sting out of having to pay the undiscounted price for the 3GS when you can get more than half your money back re-selling the old phone. Sweet!

Does anyone know how an iPhone works without a data plan? Does it shut off all non Wi-Fi data or does it charge you if you try to use it? What I mean is: If I am out and about and try to utilize data do I get charged per byte?

If you even can get data service, you'll be charged 1 cent a kilobyte, so the bill will be absolutely silly.

How are availability reports?

Upgrading is as simple as removing the SIM card, signing another contract, and buying my 3GS right? Same number not much hassle i hope?

Question from someone coming from the 2G (Edge) to the new 3Gs.

Were you always able to edit a SMS to take one specific txt and either forward it to someone else, or delete it?

I don't ever remember being able to do that?

You don't need to swap the SIM. iTunes will take care of it for you

There was a short line outside my local Apple Store (SF Marina) yesterday. The sales person inside said they still had plenty in store. I heard that there was a longer line outside the Emeryville store. I think the stock is there if you're willing to wait.

I was surprised how many people in line had the 3G phone. I figured it would be mostly OG upgraders (and maybe it is) but apparently a lot of people are willing to pay the premium to go from 3G to 3GS. Having been blown away by the 3GS performance I can understand why.

Ive got this weird bug where my iphone tells me to update AIM. Problem is I dont have AIM installed, I have Bejive. Anyone else have this issue? Im on 2G iphone with 3.0

new feature in 3.0

I'm gonna assume no, but is there any way to get links I get in texts and Beejive that are links to GAF to open in the mobile app?

The swapped out the SIM at the AT&T store where I brought my 3G in to upgrade. Then again they don't know what the fuck they're doing.

As long as the existing SIM card is 3G capable you can use it for the new phone, just have to take out the one that comes with the iPhone. It really doesn't matter either way, just if you don't swap the cards the AT&T system has to enter your new card's number.

sigh. calling into rogers again, they screwed up my data plan. Guess you were wrong firestorm :lol

So did the app size cap get removed? I can't even check until this data plan stuff gets fixed.

All of the 10 MB limits on content are still there with AT&T. I don't know about the rest of the world, but if you had a cap before, you probably still have it. Any site saying something else is lying just to get attention.

On my way home to pick my 3G S up. Can't wait.

As a developer, it's going to be very hard to resist the temptation to code to the constraints of the 3G S.

So you're saying that if I take data off of my plan it flat out won't be able to utilize the edge network?

The reason for the q is my wife may be getting a new 3GS and I want to offset the increase in charges (we both have 1st gen iPhones).

I was gonna start a thread just for this but I figure I'll ask here first.

A friend just got a new 3GS to replace his old 8GB 3G and is going to sell me his old iPhone to do with whatever I want to.

I was wondering if there was any way to use it as a phone, but not have to pay the outrageous fees of a contract. What are my options?

Can I A) link it to some other plan somehow, perhaps even an ala carte plan where I could choose my wants and needs as I go, but not have to be tied down to a contract commitment where I am stuck for years. I hate being tied down.

Or B) can I turn it into just an iPod that still can use the WiFi part, but thinks its an iPod touch instead of a phone, you know, in case I can't get a plan that I can afford.

What are my options here?

...So I call to enable tethering, and they redirect me to tech support. Perky lady on the other end seems happy to help out, first thing she says is General->Reset->Reset Network Settings.

Me: "bwahuh? ....okay...."

*phone call ends as the network settings cut out and the phone reboots* :lol

It did work though. Just...wow. :lol

If you take data off the plan, your phone will still use the data network; you'll just be charged their per kilobyte rate, which is fairly insane compared to the plans. Not sure what you need to do to disable cellular data entirely.

Well, if you're going to use the original provider, you won't need to jailbreak/unlock it. Otherwise it's a holding pattern (as explained in previous posts this page or last.)

A) I don't know what provider you use, but yeah, you would own the phone without a contract. Using Rogers you would be limited to using iphone plan options, but you could probably do pay-as-you-go or get a 1 year contract using iphone specific plan features.

I have to think it's possible, AT&T or Rogers or whatnot, that you can get some sort of plan that is either short-term or no-term; if they insist on a 2-3 year, I guess make a fuss or talk to another provider.

B) Sure, again providing your friend didn't wipe the phone into the bricked, need a new SIM state, you can turn on airplane mode and use it indefinitely as an iPod Touch. As long as airplane mode is on you will be kept off the cellular grid, and from there you can still enable wifi.

I got my 3GS on Friday morning and I am loving the phone very much. It's my first iPhone and it literally takes a big fat shit over any mobile I've had in the past, and I've had many.

It just oooozes class and is ultra slick, and I've not really got many apps yet! I love the landscape texting on it, and I can actually type faster than I ever could with a regular mobile phone, its great! Call quality (02 in England) is very good and very very clear with tones of volume if you need it. I really couldn't be happier with it :)

It's awesome in every way, and that screen.. Incredible.

I know this sounds a bit paranoid, but is there any evidence to suggest that putting a case on the iPhone in any way insulates/dampens the cell signal? I had shitty call quality on one particular call today. This is my first time using a case so it's all new to me.

Welcome to AT&T in San Francisco. :)

Heh, well I use Net10. Because I don't use the phone enough to justify $80 a month for cell phone service. If I had a phone with data, I'd probably use that even more than texting or calling combined. Somehow I douby Net10 would allow me to stay with them and use an iPhone.

I don't know if he wiped it. He says it is updated to 3.0, but he kept his old number when he got the new phone and probably removed some data from the old one. If he kept his number, wouldn't that make the old phone confused and not work? I really don't know how this goes.

I'm in the US. Who is a good cell phone provider that would allow me to bring my own phone and has a nice selection of plans to choose and pick from where I can choose how much of each part of the pie I want? I mean, I don't need unlimited talk or text. I get 150 units a month, and I use maybe 24 at most. Maybe 50 to an hour and a half (Which would be 120 minutes) and right now my rollover minutes are up to 1600. What would really get me would be data. If I could get a reasonable plan for data that didn't cost out the wazoo but was still reasonable enough for whatever usage I would put on it. (I never had a device on the go that could do internet. So I don't know how much I would actually use. But I would want to be able to use certain sites when I'm in an area that doesn't have wifi so I could still keep in contact back and forth.)

From what I've always heard, if you don't go prepaid, you end up with a contract that costs hundreds of dollars a year and requires you to stick with it for a few years. And that everyone has them. And that even the lowest plan is still $50-60 a month for just talking. Which I wouldn't even NEED!

But I can't use my Net10 as much out of my area. If I leave too far, I can't text. Which would be a burden when I go to California next year. Since SMS was the only way I'd be able to update FaceBook status and talk to people on the road without stopping at a hotel with internet.

Trust me, I know. It's bad enough already, I just wonder if putting a case around it makes it any worse.

Unless the case is made of metal, any dampening it's doing is probably negligible.

I get apple loo of death after updating to 3.0. As a developer (and to others too), do you know anything about the watchdog process? Is it something corrupted that I can fix or is it related to a noncompliant 2.2 app? I never had this problem before 3.0.

I have tried a restore from backup (which strangely never resynced my data - it appeared to only reinstall the os - I was always under the impression it had to resync stuff back).

Ok, I think I just may have sorted this out. Since I believe it was app related, I deleted a handful of apps (I picked ones that were kind of older and hadn't been updated in a while over apps that had frequent updates), and synced and tried a few reboots. I must've selected the right apps, because everything seemed fine. I empirically tried restoring my missing apps, hoping top find the culprit app. It seems my phone is fine now, without any indication of which app was causing me rebooting issues. Possibly, one of the apps I deleted and put back fixed up whatever was causing the issue. If so, I'm pretty lucky, because I only tried removing and replacing around 4 apps.

Wish me luck!

On that note, I just want to ask again - is it typical for a restore from backup to not actually resync data? I did a restore from backup, and it only took 5-10 minutes, like it was only restoring the firmware. It never resynced my media (it just stayed on there).

I downloaded Listen Up on Friday over 3G. File was was well over 10 MB.
