Just noticed that the average of indoor pictures I've taken with my iPhone 3G S are definitely still pretty grainy, but also that each one hovers around 1.2MB as a JPG. Seems pretty large to me. Wish there were a way to automatically compress them a bit on import.

When you email them they automatically compress to a smaller size - 800x600, or you could upload them to twitter via twitterific, they compress to 640x480 there. Only if you drag/drop them or copy/paste them they are full size.

I might join Twitter just to get discounts on clothes, etc. because I have no interest
telling people what I have for breakfast, but what's the best Twitter app for iPhone?

From Rob_Sheridan's twitter:

Would be interesting to see him recording during a low-light concert.
If that turned out nice, then recording a monitor mix + 3GS = awesome bootleg concerts.

Tweetdeck. If you don't like that, try Twitterific.

I have TwitterFon and TweetDeck, they're both free. TweetDeck is slick, but tends to crash. TwitterFon is basic, stable, and gets the job done.

Does anyone know how an iPhone works without a data plan? Does it shut off all non Wi-Fi data or does it charge you if you try to use it? What I mean is: If I am out and about and try to utilize data do I get charged per byte?
I have my phone with no data plan.

The phone itself has an option to turn off 3G, but the EDGE data will still be accessed by your phone, and you will be paying an insane amount. My wireless carrier was able to turn off the EDGE data on their end, so I would suggest you need to do that.

Otherwise I just use wifi when I got it and have a kickass phone/music player for the rest of the time. Works well for me.

In my opinion, the best Twitter client is Twitterrific Pro.

I also got both the G-Maps turn-by-turn navigation Apps - we are heading for a grand tour of the US in a couple of days; TomTom didn't make it in time. They look pretty good; any practical experience with them?

Plus purchased the Navigon European GPS turn-by-turn, as we'll drive in France for a few days also. I've heard only good things about Navigon's own devices so the software really interests me.

God damn I love this thing.

Compass-enhanced Google Maps is incredible.

Voice Control is so nice - the only thing it seems to be missing is the ability to select by song title. I want to just say "Play Ice Ice Baby", not "Play songs by Vanilla Ice", but there doesn't seem to be a way to do that.

So glad I upgraded. I feel the same way about my old 3G the way I did about the OG after I got the 3G. I didn't expect the upgrade to have so many tangible benefits, but it really is just a huge step up across the board.

Okay, I'm thinking about restoring my iPhone to factory settings.

Is "back up" the only thing I have to do to save my data? And more important: What data will be saved and which one won't?

Yesterday I was driving to someone's house. I type the directions into Google Maps, to my amazement on the map it showed not only the destination mark, but also my current location via the bleeping purple dot that moved real-time along the path as I drove! I had no idea this was a feature. Mind-blown.

Same thing happened to me yesterday. I went with a friend to see the Hangover, awesome movie BTW, and while he was driving I switched on my google earth program and it showed where we were driving in real time. Pretty awesome but a bit scary since it reminded me of movies like Enemy of the State.

The non-turn by turn GPS has still managed to save my butt several times in the last year driving to places i kinda, sorta know within my city.

handy thing to have

I want the old 'hold link to see full URL' back, I'm not feeling the new popup menu I have to dismiss. Seems like everytime i put my finger to the screen now it triggers some option menu :(. The should be a way to turn it off until I need to use it
like a SBSettings toggle

So is turn by turn nav simply not possible with the 3G?? Argh --- and no voice control either --- so upset!

Jeesh get a hold of yourself. Turn by turn is possible on the 3G with the new software.

Well, you might be reading a bit more drama into my original text than what I had intended, but consider that my wife decided to purchase a couple 16GB 3G units at their OLD $299 each price to surprise me two months ago, and then held off on letting me know about them for a month. So now we're stuck with two-month-old 16GB 3G units that AT&T would not take back by the time I found out about them. Add to that the fact that it feels like there are features like voice control and video that are possible, but being held back artificially, and it makes for a undesirable situation.

The 'old' units are still incredibly awesome and I hope you weren't too upset with your wife for your surprise. That's one hell of a present.

video is not being held back artificially. i've used jailbroken video apps. the video is 320 x 240 15 fps garbage.

and while I haven't used the voice control stuff, i've heard that it uses the extra ram and processing power to function properly and without slowing down the rest of the system.

as for the situation with your wife, don't get upset at her for not knowing Apple's upgrade cycle. these things happen.

No, no, no ... I'm not AT ALL upset with my wife, and yes, they certainly are nice handsets. I'm just frustrated with the situation. I mean, we have three young children, and having a 32GB with a better camera and video capabilities for the same price (or even the 16GB for $100 less) would've been incredibly handy for us. It's just a combination of factors ... but I fully acknowledge that I have a WONDERFUL wife.

situation != wife ;-)

So, more on topic, when is the Google turn by turn app/update due out? Between that and the Meebo and ESPN apps that were demoed during the 3.0 software announcement briefing, it seems that my most-anticipated 3.0 apps are not out, and don't appear to have any sort of ETA.

What is the best iPhone RSS reader? I've been using NetNewsWire since that is what I use on my Mac but I'm not too thrilled with it. Something that syncs with Google Reader would be nice.

I'm interested in Byline and Newsstand, so any impressions would be great.

Why not just use Google Reader through Safari? It practically performs as well as a native app would.
Word. Google Reader is one of the best iPhone formatted sites on the web. I love it almost as much as the GAF reader. :D

Nice dude. Glad to see I wasn't the only one distracted from coding by family this weekend :)

In any case, how'd you work out the visa/itunes/amazon song sponsoring? Is that all Google's introspection of your video or what??
My guess is that iMovie told YouTube this when I uploaded it.

google maps is not getting turn by turn for any device. the 3gs uses the compass for orientation, but that's not turn by turn functionality. turn by turn means you get explicit instructions for each maneuver, usually accompanied by voice dictation for the instructions.

tom tom has an app coming out sometime soon that will use their own maps (as req'd for all of these apps) and i imagine other companies will release their apps relatively soon, as well.

edit: @Raize. byline is pretty good and does a great job syncing folders (tags) and starred status with google reader. i liked it a bit more than the webapp. also, i read an update on the netnewswire blog that it will soon be adding google reader integration. i have no idea if this means feed importing or real syncing.

My order finally processed and I now have a number. They apparently are giving me free NDA shipping but I don't know if it will go out today or not.. crossing my fingers though.

Am I the only one who can't get Air Sharing to work anymore after the 3.0 came out? I loved that app, a wireless storage in Iphone was just so handy for file transfer.

But even though author claims their app is now fixed to work on 3.0 and I have that latest version, it just freezes on the title screen on both my 3.0 updated ipod touch and iphone 3gs.

Did you try "Play song Ice Ice Baby"? I'd try it but I'm at work now. I know you can make it play by voicing the album's name, so just find Ice Ice Baby single, and you're good to go :P

Also, now that I have iphone, I'm considering buying Apple's new in-ear headphones. I know they are not the very top of the line sound quality but it's nice having microphone and remote control on the cable.

But the sound quality is still an issue. I have Denon 751 now, and I'm wondering if apple's will be significantly worse. I'm a fan of strong bass and crisp highs, and Denon's are known to be among the best in those areas...

do you have a brick and mortar store where you can buy and then return them if you dislike the sound quality?

if so, it's a no risk option to pick some up to see how they compare to your Denons.

i believe the the tom tom app also requires the car kit for additional gps hardware? with only an assisted gps chipset in the iphone, I'm not sure it may be 100% accurate and fast enough for turn by turn directions. Although it seems to be fairly accurate with google maps. it sometimes takes forever to get a lock though.

The added RAM of the 3G S makes Google Reader a lot more usable for me. On my old iPhone, clicking an article to read the full thing, then returning to the window with Google Reader would cause the Reader page to reload. No longer!

I'm curious about this too. I notice lag in a few more places with OS 3.0 on my 3G than I did with 2.2.1. I was considering doing a restore to see if it would help.

Posting from MobileGAF on the 3G S. It's so much faster that it's going to be really hard to stay motivated to further optimize the so far, very slow XML processing on the older phones.

Will try to hang in there :)

What would be a reasonable price to pay for a factory unlocked iphone (i.e. the ones from France and Italy)? In eBay I see it within the $1,200-1400 range, although I'm not sure if this is due to the novelty or because of the actual, real price.

the term "assisted gps" has messed up so many people. all it means is that it uses alternate location sources (like known wifi signals) when you're in areas that cannot use GPS, due to super tall buildings or whatnot. it doesn't mean it needs the assistance to work, it just means it can call upon the assistance where no GPS signal would work.

the cradle is not needed for the tom tom to work. yes, it will help the app out, but it's not required at all.

Cradle isn't needed, but it has a speaker in it, charges the phone and keeps the phone from going into "sleep mode". Depending on the price, I think the cradle is worth it.

that's true. if i didn't already have a charging system, i would grab the tom tom cradle for using the app on long trips.

but some people already have charging cradles for one reason or another so it's not like we would have to replace them with this cradle to make the app work. :)

Yeah, I'll probably end up doing that, however the price in local Best Buy is $10 more than on Apple's online store.

price match that shit! :D

or try it out from BB, then return it and buy from apple if you want to keep it :P

To answer my own question, the iPhone 3GS 32 GB is being sold in the Italian Apple Store at 699€. I'd say paying a premium of 100€ in the marketplace (for a total of 799€) + shipping would be the reasonable amount to expect.

I like Newsstand and us it a lot. NetNewsWire cut out too many features for my needs.
