SMS are saved when you backup your iPhone with iTunes. The texts themselves are not easily accessible on a computer though. The iPhone stores the texts on the 16GB or 32GB storage of the 3GS; I don't know how many that translates into but I haven't had to delete a text in 10 months and I'm sure you'll hear a similar observation from people who bought the iPhone 2G on day one...
Thanks Charred!

That's good enough! I wish I could browse my messages on iTunes though, but then again I do wish a lot of things. I'm used to a Nokia app that does that.

I'm getting the 3.x update now. Is there a recommended noob guide anywhere? Like it'd be good to know what the ultra-essential apps are. If I want to use AIM should I use the one off the app store?

Spend $10 on BeejiveIM, much better than the official AIM app.

It boggles my mind that functionality that basic is still missing from the iPhone. I guess it's going to be added in a future update and touted as a 'new feature'. Sigh.

iPhone hits all demographics. It's not too hard to believe that most users aren't crying out for a lock screen where you can see your favorite quote, RSS feed and next appointment at a glance.

It would be nice to have some more options, though.

edit: Saw more at the link, it differed from the pic in here. Actually pretty awesome and a more useful configuration. I guess they didn't do this to stick to their simplicity theme. Kinda lame.

We need a favicon/iPhone icon for GAF. Get on it mods.

My home screen only has 12 icons per page. I can't believe you crazies have 16. TOO CROWDED.

I fail to see how this matters. I only leave a blank row for future expansion on some screens, but many screens, including my home screen, has all the slots filled up. Don't see the issue.

I meant 16 in the black area. 20 max per page. I have 16 total, but not in the black area.

Idk I just don't like it. I feel claustrophobic. :lol

Yeh I should have mentioned that I have the mail, phone, sms etc notifications setup but they only show when there are new alerts.

You need a jailbroken iphone with Winterboard installed. Then:

1. Go to Cydia > Manage > Sources > Edit > Add

Type in the following new source: http://simonv.chronophoto.fr/cydia/

2. Look in the Changes category or search for "matte" and you'll get a list of the Lockinfo Matte UI theme and all the Plugins. Choose the ones you want and install them.

3. Open Winterboard and enable the Lockinfo Matte UI theme.

4. If you go to the General phone settings you'll see a Lockinfo option where you can customize everything.

5. If you haven't already you should also install "SBSettings" from Cydia. This will allow you to quickly respring the springboard if you want to force a refresh after making certain changes.

6. Install "20 Second Lock Screen' to prevent the screen dimming to quickly.

:lol I know exactly how you feel. I like keeping things organized and clutter-free. I try to keep it to 12 per screen too.

So yeah i installed lockscreen info on my 3gs and now it wont turn on...im going to have to restore it now...
:/ do you get the apple icon screen? try ssh/usb connecting and removing lockscreen info before you resort to restoring. What did you use to jailbreak: purplera1n or redsn0w?

How does push work for e-mail with iPhone? Can you get it to work with pop3? I don't know anything about e-mail and push so don't laugh at me, ok? :)

The battery on my phone keeps draining when I leave it on standby overnight. Last night it was at around 50% and then this morning it's at like 10%. Anyone else have this issue?

My friend just gave me his 8 GB 3G since he upgraded to a 3G S. Anyone have any good recommendations of apps that I should get? I preferably like free ones, but I'm not opposed to shelling out the cash considering how cheap they are.

So far I have:
- Shazam
- Flixster
- Barnes & Noble
- AIM
- Y! Messenger (I plan on getting BeeJive eventually 'cause it was great on my Blackberry)
- Pandora
- Chess
- The Moron Test :D

I'd go through the topic, but...it's 400 pages. Bleh.

Tell us what you want to do.

The problem with generic app recommendation lists is that there are 50,000 things to choose from. You're better off just Google searching for "iphone app recommendations" or something and coming here if you need a specific thing.

Dear Apple: please give us an option to change the iTunes/App Store region as well as the account from the phone itself.

I can't believe this is still dependent on the last setting the synced computer had for store region. Some of my Apps are from the US store; others from the Japanese store. It makes sense to stick to one store for buying Apps, but since I don't have a Japanese credit card, I'm forced to buying iTunes Japan gift cards by ¥1500 intervals, so I choose to buy some Apps from Japan to use up my credits. This login-baloney is a problem when I want to update apps and I'm not at home to sync.

Actually, thanks for your advice, because I managed to get it to work after doing it wrong. I just have to remember to do log out and log in before dealing with any app updates. :D

Oh yeah, Pandora. Time to add that.

For a to-do/productivity app, my sister recommended OmniFocus, but I guess the program it syncs with only works on Mac. I'm looking into it.

What Liu Kang Baking A Pie wrote. In the mean time look at these threads for some choices:
Apple iPhone/iPod touch App Discussion and Recommendations
The Official iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming Recommendation Thread

My random rec of the day is Illustrations. Nice idea; hope the developer runs far with it.

Has anybody tried theFlowChat irc app? It looks good but I already have Rooms and Mobile Colloquy...

ps I've Backgrounds in a few screenshots. Is it worth it?

I always recommend Remote to everyone. It's free, it's made by Apple, it works like a charm and huh... it's great. It controls iTunes via wi-fi BTW.

And if you have an Airport Express with Airtunes it's even 10% greater.

Thanks CG on the iTwin tip ;)

Just got it. Awesome. Man, I'm gonna have some fun with this thing.

Thanks very much for that.. I think I'm gonna go with this over Intelliscreen, even though I've already paid for it and used it for a while.. One question: Is there any way to change the timeout of the lockscreen? The screen seems to turn off while I'm looking at my lockscreen very quickly.. I know in Intelliscreen you could modify the default lock screen dim time.. it's way too quick on the iphone if you're actually looking at it.

I fucking hate Cydia. Slow-ass piece of.. It crashes too much too, it now does everytime I try to add a source!

There was a discussion a couple days back. Most likely push notifications or mail fetching.

:lol I've seen 25 (30 if you're counting the dock. If the theme is using small sized 'nano' icons and no icon labels on if doesn't seem as much a clusterfuck

Search for 20 second lockscreen in Cydia

Charred beat me to it - "20 second lock screen" is what I'm using.
I wonder if it's possible to increase it further.

Yeh it can be a bit slow - try letting it fully load anything before pressing another button and it may stop it crashing.

I think the one kind of app I'd like the most is a Paint/Photo Editor app.

Greyface you seem to know what you're talking about when it comes to LockInfo, so I'll ask you. I have the matte theme installed for LockInfo, but on the lockscreen only the weather and the clock show up. I have ClockHide installed so the big one doesnt show, only the little one. I've seen other people have this problem, but i couldnt find a fix for it.

A couple questions.

- let's say im on the facebook app and click a URL. It brings me to safari. Is there a way to get back to the facebook app without navagating back to the home screen?

-anyway to automatically scroll to the bottom of a webpage?

Thanks

You can do this with a Safari bookmarklet (little bits of Javascript that can be stored as a bookmark and let you do things like search for text in a page).

Check this site: http://www.ipuhelin.com/en/safariplus/

The one you want is "Scroll to end".

So I went to an apple store to play with a 3gs and it was very fast. I'm only using a 2g right now but still. Flight control loaded instantly on it. Every thing felt very responsive, there wasn't the lag I feel on my phone. I just don't know if I want to spend 90 dollars a month. Who am I kidding though I probably will.

Never encountered this problem and I tried to replicate your settings today but it didn't show up. Like alterego mentioned earlier the other plugins don't show up if you have no new item (an unread sms for example). Check if the plugins are enable in Settings; if they are, toggle them off and on just to make sure. Put Lockinfo Matte UI above LockInfo in winterboard and tick only the former. Reinstall. Dont know what else to try if none of those step work...

I was wondering if something like this would be good to let me use my current headphones? I'll have to tie up the chord or something to stop it being too long but looking for something cheap that'll do the job.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Headphone-Ea...bb97&_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116#ebayphotohosting

Anybody had any experience?

something like that will work, yes. you can click to do all the stuff the official iphone headset does except volume control.

but, i would recommend spending a little more and getting the griffin version of the clicker. it's a super small clicker module, has a good mic and is generally better quality than the bulky 3 dollar modules.

Alright, I tried Categories and it sucks. You click an icon, wait for stuff to load, then have to scroll through other icons to find what you want. I think the SpringJumps is much faster access to everything.
