you have to admit that the location of the tiny "done" and "cancel" buttons when using the quick add interface are horribly, horribly positioned.
Ahh, I don't use quick add so I wouldn't know.
There are certainly flaws, but on the whole I think it's a quality app.

It's worth it for me simply for the folders and passwords-protect function.

So I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and had to wipe my hard drive. If I sync my iphone with an empty itunes library will it erase all my songs or transfer them over to itunes? If so what's the most convenient way to transfer them back into itunes?

There isn't an official way to stn stuff back. You're supposed to backup your stuff, restore that and then resync.

There ate some third party apps that will attempt to recover stuff from your phone, however.

You can right click your phone in itunes and select "transfer purchases" but that will only transfer things purchased through itunes. You can also use something like this http://www.digidna.net/diskaid/ to access the media folder on your phone so you can copy it to your computer.

I've noticed that something on my iPhone is slowly, but surely, increasing my phone bill, I've checked a few times to see how much money I'm supposed to pay by the end of the month.

Safe to say, it doesn't exactly add up to how much texting/calling I've been doing.
It's not that much money but in the long run it will be.

I've already made sure PUSH messages are disabled so it's not that, been looking in the network settings to see if anything relates to this.
I know the iPhone turns Wifi off in standby mode, I guess something could be receiving and sending data while it is still in standby?

I feel like such a noob but it's my first iPhone :lol

Edit: I should add in that it does in fact lose connection to the provider at times, could the reconnecting be what's causing it all?

I can't even figure out how to access MMS messages...already connected to iTunes and gotten a "carrier update."

Stupid question: is there a way to keep my voicemails from automatically being deleted after 30 days?

I don't think it's 30 days. I have some from Aug. 5th. There's some sort of per-conversatio limit, though. That'd be neat to be able to raise. *shrug*

Edit: I have some way older than that. 4th of July is the oldest I can find.

Did you reboot the phone after the update?

It sometimes blows me away how people don't immediately think to do this once they receive a new update on anything they own. PCs have been a staple in our lives for long enough at this point, you would think that rebooting would be the first "Hm, I should try that" solution. Ah well.

That was the FIRST thing I did; it says to reboot it in the official message they send you about MMS :lol

I had to reboot four times before it showed up on the settings -> messages, but in the end on my phones it only worked after ~10 minutes after I did the update, because I rebooted hers twice and got nothing the first time and mine three times with no result, but they suddenly both started to show the MMS options about 10 min. later.

Haha, all right. I just thought you were one of those jokers who didn't reboot. My wife and I got ours to work on the first reboot, then immediately sent each other a picture after that. Then I proceeded to send a picture of a micro penis to everyone on my contact list sans family. That's just how I roll.

The network in the Cincinnati/N. KY area was really bad earlier, but at this point in the day, everything is flying like normal. 3G is typically pretty consistent throughout the day here, but today everything ground to a halt.

It's working now, it just wasn't working for a little while on either phone. I suppose it takes a while before the phone starts picking up the correct frequency or something, because I rebooted them both at the same time and they both worked then, about 10 minutes after doing the update. I was concerned perhaps I just downloaded the update and failed to apply it to the phone or something since it was so short.

Only problem I've had is that my phone "died" from the battery bug that's been happening. Just a few minutes ago. I'm at work without a cable, but my cubicle mate has one so I grabbed his and it came back about three or four minutes after plugging it into my computer. I'm letting it charge almost to full now.

As for MMS, I can send to T-Mobile users fine, and I receive pictures from them, but nada on videos. Anyone having problems receiving videos from other carriers or even from AT&T users? They can receive mine just fine, though.

My phone suffers from Apple Logo of Death since 3.0 (3.0.1 cured it, but in 3.1 it's back). about 90% of the time after a reboot, my phone will hang. I need to connect it to a computer and reboot three time sot fix it. So if I'm out and about, I will not reboot my phone.

I just got an iPhone and I'm feeling overwhelmed... Help! :(

I don't even know where to look to get started... I have it set up and I got me some apps, but what's the next step? I keep hearing about jailbreaking but I honestly don't even know what it does...

Sorry for making the annoyingly ignorant newbie post, but I've been trying to google up info for hours and this thread alone is 448 pages... There's a lot to look through and I'm not even sure where to start.

I am absolutely loving the phone though! :D

What's to know? Load up some music, videos and apps and you're good to go! Check ou mobile browsing and play with google maps when out an about.

Have fun and report back here every time the iPhone lows your mind and how it is changing your life.

Don't worry about jailbreaking for a month or two. Mess with the phone, the settings, everything. Just play around with it. You got some apps, so fiddle with those. The biggest thing is not to try to think you need everything right now. People will name off every app they have that they use, but that doesn't mean it's worth anything to you.

As mrkgoo said, check everything out and report back. Just come back to ask questions on whether the phone can do something or not. The only time jailbreaking should even be considered is if you really REALLY need to customize your phone or there is something that you seriously can't live without that your previous phone did (I know some of the file storage options can be one of those things). Other than that, vanilla iPhone is pretty robust.

Updates on the Mac are very explicit if you need to reboot. Most of the updates don't need to though and can be run in the background while you continue with other activities...

5.5 for me.

hey, if I do this update for MMS, do I have to re-jailbreak?
No. Here's one guide to get the update for MMS.
@scorcho, I managed to update the carrier settings and still keep the tethering option.

Question about AT&T upgrade. I was planning on joining AT&T in early December and figured I'd go ahead and wait till this coming June for the next iPhone. I was going to use my room mates phone until then. So if I went in with his basic old phone, could I still use my upgrade in June or is it only when you sign up at that moment?

Anyone?

Just sent a video I took on my iPhone to a friend through MMS. Man, did it compress it to really crappy quality. Well the whiners got their MMS. I'm still gonna use email whenever I can.

Thanks! I'll be taking this advice for sure, and am currently spending most of my day playing around with apps online and in the store. :lol

My favorite little thing so far has to be the Ocarina, with the listening globe where you can listen to other people playing their ocarinas. Such a relaxing little feature, I love just opening the globe, finding someone that can at least kind-of play and putting it down. :D

I'm also enjoying the fact that many games are highly playable and don't feel like crappy low-budget "phone games." I really liked Edge, the MGS4 shooter and Monosphere, but what totally blew me away was ZenBound. I honestly did not think I could appreciate something like that, but it's instantly addictive and, like Ocarina, very relaxing... :)

Another one I loved was FingerPiano, which is a virtual piano with the twist that you can have it display "falling blocks" that represent a classical piece, so you can pretend like you know how to play Für Elise even if you're musically retarded...which I am, so I appreciate apps like this. :D

So that was my post about how excited I am and how it's slowly changing my life in little ways, I guess! Time to go back to exploring apps, or just to buy ZenBound and get addicted to tying ropes the rest of today...

Edit: I also quite like Takayuki Fukatsu's camera apps, especially the TiltShift one. :D

My phone no longer auto-locks after updating to 3.1. It still locks if I hit the lock button on top but it wont lock if I just leave it set. I checked the settings and it is set to 1 minute. Anyone know if this is a bug and if its fixable?

Have you tried rebooting?

Maybe a process is operating that prevents it from locking.

Arrgghh my 3.1 just did the whole random shutdown thing.

This is a huge issue if you can't even rely on your phone being on. Luckily, it managed to reboot. Where is the fix, Apple?

Quick question. I'm about to grab an iPhone today, and I'm trying to decide between 16 gig and 32. When it comes to apps and stuff like that is the difference that big of a deal? I have a 60 gig old iPod video that I still use for music, and wasnt really planning replacing it with the iPhone. Was just curious if anyone had a 16 gig and regretted it, or had a 32 gig and realized they didnt actually need the extra space

Most of the apps are very small in size - even the best-looking 3D games on the iPhone are usually under 100-200 MB. You can check the App Store through iTunes and see what you're interested in, it lists the sizes there so you can get an idea how much space you may need. The big ones are things like GPS navigation apps which are about 1.5 gigs due to all the maps.

Personally I would go with a 32 GB one, then you won't really have to worry about size.

Hmm. Is the phone jailbroken? I wonder is something is up with the touch to think that it's being 'used'.
It's not jailbroken. It's not a huge deal but it kinda sucks whena I forget to manually lock it and my battery drains like crazy.

owned my 3gs since launch... finally got around to downloading dvd decrypter and handbrake... ummmm... should make my upcoming trip MUCH MORE enjoyable!! have a pretty decent DVD collection (600 legit titles). pretty much like going shopping all over again.

on the downside I tried running my Dark City digital copy and the code expired... boooo.... guess I have to rip the DVD.. lol..

When it comes to the iPhone, I'd always get the largest capacity if you can. If you think about how much you're spending on the phone over the course of a two year contract, that extra 100 for double the space is relatively small, and I've definitely used more than 16GB on my phone.

Anyone here have recommendations for car mounts? I want a cheapish one (like under 30$) that is flexible (one that can be moved on an angle and be in both landscape/portrait) and can be removed easily. I've got a car charger separately already.

If you live in the US get a RAM Mount. Great quality, flexible, upgradeable, modular and so on.

http://www.ram-mount.com/

If you live outside the US, it's probably 6 times the price it should be.

Any universal car mount that sells for $5 on ebay meets these needs.
