After much internal debate, I think I've come to my senses.

I don't want an iPhone anymore :D (not NOW, at least).

You'll change your mind eventually. This thing is freakin' amazing. It's the best do-everything device I've ever owned.

I wholeheartedly agree with this statement. It's just a fun device to use and have on you at all times. Especially if you need to look up a quick fact on Wikipedia or IMDB or something. And some of the iPhone apps that have already appeared make me hopeful that we're really gonna see this thing open up pretty fast.

PocketTweeter - Twitter for iPhone, has a sweet UI. Almost makes me want to use Twitter.
JiveTalk - IM client. Haven't tried it but it looks nice.

I've seen 2 phones in the wild now -- other people with them looking at email, etc. And today at Chick Fil-a one of the staff was oohing and ahhing over mine. Ha. "Is that one of the new iPhones?"

After debating whether or not to exchange my iPhone, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot.

I had one tiny dead pixel - it was extremely hard to see and only visible when the screen was pure black. So I was debating whether or not to even bother, since I figured they wouldn't allow an exchange for something that minor. It was kinda embarrassing since I couldn't even point it out to them, but he said he believed me. I got a brand new everything (headphones, charger, dock, etc). Only thing that's old is the SIM card that he swapped. I take it home, iTunes re-activates it (in like 5 seconds) and then iTunes syncs a backup. Very nice, was back up and running within a few minutes and without having to call anyone or anything like that.

Well, then I take a close look at the phone and damn! same thing, another (single) dead pixel on the screen, but this time in a different spot. I'm wondering if it's even worth it to keep going back, I'm guessing this stores entire shipment is like that.

I bought one of those crystal film transparent iPhone screen things too (not because I'm worried about scratches, but I'm hoping this keeps smudges off better). If I exchange this phone tomorrow and get one that I'll keep, I'll give impressions on that.

I'm afraid it's another case of the Sony PSP.

Almost every single PSP I tried out on launch day had dead pixels. It was simply unavoidable.

My iPhone has a dead pixel, and it kind of sucks, but it's only noticeable on certain screens and not while I'm browsing the net or anything...so I figure, I'll just keep the one I have because I could exchange it for something worse...

Also, this gives me a legitimate excuse to return it before the 1 year warranty is up so I can 'extend' my battery life :D

I posted the Jivetalk client on the previous page, and I messed with it earlier today. I got Yahoo IM up and running quickly and easily, but Google Talk still had some issues. Still, it looks good on the iPhone and seems pretty functional. Haven't messed with PocketTweeter yet though.

I've only seen one other iPhone out in the wild so far, but when I pull mine out, which I do all the time not to show it off, but because I can't keep my hands off of it, people always ask me about it. It's definitely THE tech object of desire at the moment.

BTW, I got my first bill from AT&T yesterday. That sure didn't take very long. :lol

iPhone Hackers: "we have owned the filesystem"

The kooky hacking kids over at IRC channel #iphone claim to have gained full ownership of the iPhone filesystem. In an update titled "How to Escape Jail," they highlight the technical steps required to enable custom ringtones, wallpapers and more for your iPhone. They have not released a tool for general consumption -- yet -- but do provide the picture above as evidence of their hacking skillz.

haha. I got my first bill too. I try not to pull out my phone in public too much. No one has come up to ask me about it, either.. and I'd kind of prefer to keep it that way.

Unless your everythings include the following:

Record video.
Use an mp3 of your choice for its ringtone
Buy music online
Play games
Send MMSes
Use 3G - to have a video conference for instance (not that I or anyone I know actually does this even in Europe - and they don’t, I think, actually have 3G networks in the US so no point for iPhones to do 3G in the US market)
Listen to FM radio
Enjoy built in GPS (OK, practically only the Nokia N95 does this)

Among others :)

It is pretty though, no doubt.

I'm convinced I have a bad battery, again. After reporting 3 hours of usage (NOT standby time) the phone 's battery has discharged around 75%. That seems very low to me, especially in light of what others say they get.

What is everyone's usage saying beofre they need to charge? Please refer to the iPhone's usage statistic, not "I used it all day." ;)

Probably not going to be of much help since I just charged it last night, but my current usage info is Usage: 22 minutes, and stand by 4 hour and 7 minutes. The green battery hasn't moved at all yet. I'll keep an eye on it through out the day though.

Thanks dude. Another oddity is I had it charging overnight, and when I took it out of the dock it immediately said usage was at 2 hours already, and standby was over 2 as well. ???

Yeah dude, your phone is ****ed up I'm sure. Take that shit to Apple and get a new one STAT! (Well I would if I was you)

I do think all of these will eventually be added in firmware updates. The only one that might not happen that I quoted is Video Conference. It is possible with iChat being heavily rumored to hit soon in an update and with Wi-Fi usage. But yeah, it would be stupid without a camera also in the front of the phone.

shantyman said:

Yeah dude, something is wrong. I have full brightness on and Wi-Fi alwasys on and never have I had the phone died on me and I use it hella during the day. (I charge before while I sleep)

The battery is broken, just switch and get a new phone.

shantyman -- Your battery is bad. An exchange should work wonders for you. Even after a day of medium use with iPod, Safari, Mail, Phone over both WiFi and EDGE, my battery has never dipped below 50%.

Marty Chinn -- From what I've seen, EDGE performance is highly dependent on signal strength. If you are getting 3-4 bars, you will see the ~150 kbps rates that others have noted. If it's 1-2 bars...the data connection trickles at best. If the Apple Store in question was in a mall, it's possible that it knocked down the connection strength to make EDGE painful.

I do remember the dialup days, and EDGE on the iPhone does feel much faster than dialup. You'll never mistake it for home broadband, but it's serviceable when you need information on the go. (I also tend to stop a page loading once I see the content I want. Waiting for a page to fully load takes forever because of the advertising crap cluttering up the edge of almost every page these days.) Then again, I'm coming from a CDMA 1x phone, so EDGE feels like lightning compared to that. If I had been used to 3G speeds, I might feel differently.

With all that being said, if you're underwhelmed by the iPhone in other areas, then you should certainly not buy one. If you're just concerned by data performance, though, you might ask around and see if you can observe a friend or friendly stranger using their iPhone in the wild to see if you feel any better about it.

Ouch! I have WiFi on and everything set to the default settings by the way. I think you have a battery issue. I'd take it back. And when you get your second one, don't forget to condition the battery! ;)

:lol Just kidding! :D

I just realized that the little protective slip/case that comes with the newer Ipods is great for the iPhone keeping safe in your pocket and such. Not going to protect it from breaking in falls but good for keeping the screen looking nice

Why is it so important to be able to buy music online? Do you buy so much music that you need to do it wirelessly?

help me activate this thing!

I bought one in New York on Tuesday from the Apple store on Fifth Avenue. I went into an AT&T store and the lady on the counter said I should just use itunes to activate, and as I didn't have a SSN (I'm English, living in the UK), you need to click on this little icon which brings up the gophone plans for prepaid.

But there isn't 'a little icon'. And the 999-99-9999 trick posted on the web doesn't seem to work. I just get a 'your activation needs more time' and then AT&T send me an email to call them, and they bust my chops about having a fake SSN and cancel the activation.

The only thing I can think of is that my credit card number (legit) doesn't match my billing address (also legit - our US office). But that should just be for itunes purchases so thats confusing.

Any suggestions? Do I need a friendly person with a US credit card to do this for me?

I know for a fact that NeoGAF is crashing the iPod often whenever I browse on Safari. The offending pages have always been pages with lots of loading content. It's happened way too many times on NeoGAF to just be a coincidence.

Lol, thats so true.

I hope iPhone owners also don't ever want to use stereo BT or synch or transfer files via BT, or carry a spare battery with them, or use their own 3rd party headphones without an adaptor, or use themes, or take macro photos, or use voice dialling... jesus, I could go on. There's just SO much missing basic functionality it's a joke.

In the US and have 3G coverage in my area. I don't really need/use it, but it's there.

I suspect that large images may be a culprit. The "new PSP" thread wasn't a problem...until I got to page 4 and scrolled down to where the crazy huge pictures were.

Thanks, I figured as much as well. Would be cool if there were options on GAF to turn off image loading...

(posting this off my iphone)

It was rather odd for me the other day to be in my favorite chinese restaurant and be literally surrounded by all the waiters as i checked my email and the locale of my next driving destination. We all laughed about it.

Then I hit up a sushi spot and the waiter there can't get enough of it. Tells me the next time I come in he'll have one. I tell him that I liked the sushi so much that I'm gonna be back soon... So.. He best hurry up.

For me... Everthing that came included with the phone was exactly what I used most on all my other devices. To be able to bring and hold one device that serves as mp3 and bid player... Phone and emailer... Web browser and topic of conversation stater (at least for now)... I really can't ask for more. I'm really looking forward to seeing what apple plans on adding as far as apps and firmware go....... And sure... Maybe even a little software hacking in between. ;)

Two quick things:

According to Gizmodo, Apple has filed a patent that will allow WiFi enabled MP3 players and phones to share music and access iTunes. Looks like they want to One-Up the Zune ASAP and it could be added to the iPhone in future updates. Read about it here:

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/crowding...nes-to-start-sharing-selling-music-277711.php

And, it looks like custom ringtones may not be far off. At least hacked one.

Sync via bluetooth? That would be the most painfully slow experience ever.

The battery thing sounds like an issue until you realize that there are 3rd party battery extenders for iPods that plug into the dock port.

Almost no cell phones take macro photos. Also I would hardly call this a "basic" functionality.

The headphone thing is a bummer though, thankfully adapters are cheap. Lack of voice dial is a bummer, but I don't use it anyway. Also, it could be remedied via software update.

Are you guys actually having problems with your headphones? I tried out two or three pairs of different headphones after I got my iPhone and all of them worked fine. No need for an adapter for me. In my case, this "issue" is being overstated.

My preferred pair of earbuds (Audio-Technica ATH-CM700Ti) do not fit into the iPhone without an adapter. I've been alternating between the iPhone earbuds and using an adapter, trying to decide if I can live without the higher-end earbuds. The adapter is ugly as hell, but I don't think I can get over the sound quality issues with the stock earbuds. :(

I'm hoping that the iPhone will be successful enough so that manufacturers will start making slimmer jack plugs...but it will take a while for things to come to market.

Yeah, I'll definitely vote in favor of the higher sound quality even if it means that you need to use the adapter. In the long run you'll be happier.

I was happy to find my Bose headphones worked perfectly find. I know audiophiles will tell me that they're over priced and not worth it, but I really enjoy the sound out of them, and they are the most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever put on.

I am tempted to do some surgery on the plug, since it's only the rubber part which is an issue. I'm not 100% sure what would happen, though, since it's a fairly small plug to begin with -- I might wreck the stability.

People on other boards have done some more interesting mods -- for example, keeping the earbud portion and using Apple's cord from the iPhone earbuds to retain the click on/off/answer and microphone features with their chosen drivers. If the Audio-Technica earbuds weren't $130, I'd be tempted to do that too. ;)

You're in the minority here. I have probably 6-7 headphones lying around my house and only one of them "kind of" fit if I held in the plug.

I would up cutting two that I used most often and now they work decently well.

Well, not everyone wants those features though. I take it you're more of a power user?

Me personally, I'll take the BT synch files and macro photos but that's it. I agree though that the recessed headphone jack was stupid.

Just an update on the battery life question. Before I charged my iPhone last night I checked the usage statistics:

Time since last full charge
Usage: 6 hours 13 minutes
Standby: 2 days 18 hours

And when I plugged it in the battery meter was a little below 50%. That usage included an hour and fifteen minutes of talking, about 45 minutes of Edge web browsing, 30 minutes of video watching, and most of the rest of the time spent listening to music. I probably could have waited another day to charge it.

Have any 3rd parties started making alternative iPhone headphones with integrated button and mic? I'm looking forward to seeing what they come up with.

What? No. I do it all the time on my Treo.

What IS slow is syncing my 80GB iPod. THAT'S a good 10 minutes everytime.

Supposedly the new version of the V-Moda Vibe Duo will provide the same thing. I had a pair of V-Moda Remix M-Class headphones for a while...decent sound, but they fell apart way too soon. (That seems to jibe with the general opinion on head-fi, etc. -- good for the price, but wild variations in quality control.)

There's a slight difference between syncing a few contacts and e-mail verses hundreds of megabytes of audio and video.

Thanks for the info. I got this on my last charge:

3 hours, 45 minutes, then the 20% battery warning popped up
1 day, 11 hours standby

It was probably 20 percent edge browsing, 20 percent talking, and 60 percent email (edge).

No BT
No Wireless except for about 10 minutes
25% brightness

I'm scheduling a genius bar appointment next week.

Sounds to me like youve never synched all your contacts and appointments via BT 2.0 EDR - not only does it take bugger all time, but I don't even need to do anything, it just synchs when I'm in proximity to my PC.

edit - mind you, it still isn't anywhere as sexy as the iPhone.

Hm, any word on an update patch or anything from Apple? The crashing in Safari and the iPod kind of irk me. It only happens maybe 10% of the time but it's still annoying.

I want them to fix the crappiness of iTunes 7.3.. it is so much more unstable than 7.2 or 7.1.. it sits and eats up half of my cpu cycles when it isn't doing anything or even responding to my input commands. The older versions never did this.. just 7.3 and 7.3.1

I just saw the first mention of an update from Apple today at The Unofficial Apple Weblog. It was in regards to battery issues and not charging properly. Apple says the batteries are fine, but the issue can be addressed through an update. At least they acknowledge that one is on the way.

http://www.tuaw.com/2007/07/12/apple-says-iphone-battery-charging-problem-is-a-fixable-firmware/

For what it's worth, I rarely have Safari crash and I've never had the iPod crash.

Also, a report on my battery life. It just died a bit a go and dropped it on the charger. When it died I had about 4 hours 10 minutes of usage, most of which was surfing and e-mail on WiFi, although there were a few short phone calls mixed in there too. I did have 2 days and 8 hours of standby as well.

I've also read a few reports of battery life improving after a few charge cycles. I've actually only had to charge mine three or four times so far, so I'm hoping that might be true. I may also try turning off WiFi and see how it effects my battery life.

My phone has this battery life as well. I had about 3 hours and 10 minutes with 2 days of standby and less than 10% battery life, but I used it mostly for surfing the web and listening to music.

I'm guessing email/browsing the web uses a considerable amount of power.

The guy in question used his phone for talking 60% of the time...so I'm guessing he had it close to his ear, which means the screen is turned off.

Ok, take this with a grain of salt, but a poster over at Howard Forums claims to have a buddy that works Apple and he let slip some upcoming plans by Apple for the iPhone. If these are true, we're in for a treat:

-There will be a build in file browser like the new finder in leopard for sorting through files

-There will be a disk mode

-The reason that there currently isn't a file browser + way to save files from web is because there isn't a file browser on the phone, and they wanted to release the same one that's gonna be in the upcoming leopard OS, complete with coverflow.

-There will even be a special version of "iWork" so you can show your keynote presentations

-So anyway a FULL file browser is coming so you can browse just like windows mobile explorer only in the cool way leopard's file browser is

-Full spotlight like search is coming too

-Widescreen keyboard support will be coming in every app, not just safari

-Copy & Paste, Select Text is coming too (clipboard)

-Also mail will see an upgrade so you can add accounts without doing so through itunes.

-Most of the delays in this is because iTunes is the App Windows & Mac users are familar with for iTunes, so Apple didn't want to do a bad interface that had a file browser hacked into iTunes.

-When Leopard FINAL release comes out, plugging in the iPhone will pop open a special window in the finder that has areas for dragging all your files like a file explorer only more advanced and designed specifically for the iPhone, it will make sure that it works so iTunes knows how much space is for data, and how much is for "iTunes" stuff.

-Apple will be putting iChat on the phone, very, very soon, before Leopard.

-Real Applications are coming to the phone shortly.

-These are all updates that will be software based for the iPhone you already have, so give it a little bit of time. In the meantime enjoy the features it already has.

-Oh and also there will be Photo Sharing, just like in iPhoto how you can check an option to let other people on the network view your photos.

-He said .Mac account would eventually sync your accounts to the .Mac server as well from the phone, and so forth.

-Simplified File sharing when on WIFI networks through bonjour (auto ip discovery) is coming, so once the file system software is up, your buddy in the same room will be able to navigate to his file browser > Network, and grab a file off your phone that you are sharing.

-Ringtones will be coming very, very soon.

-The Camera Software will get upgraded soon to have stabilization (software based)

-Flash is coming eventually, it's just a matter of handling it in a way so when i page has dozens of flash apps running at the same time the page doesn't slow to a crawl, so they have to take the Adobe flash and make some customizations, including for security.

Anyway, enjoy the great mobile phone for now, and look forward to all the great stuff coming really, really soon. I can't WAIT for the new file browser so I can store stuff on this device!!

Just remember Windows Mobile has been out or a long time, even everytime a new WM phone comes out all the apps that are supposed to work, have to be tweaked or don't fit on the screen or some bullcrap, so realize this is just Apple's very first OS release for mobile Phone. Apple has lots of treats instore for all of you.

Interesting stuff. There is a lot in there to like, but again take this with a grain of salt.
