Just updated...speaker sounds about the same so far on max volume listening to some visual voicemails, didn't see any options under settings to up the loudness either). I'll try making some calls in a bit to test the earpiece, which DEFINATELY needed a boost, so hopefully that is fixed.

Edit: Tried out the Itunes store and tested some music samples. The speaker setting is -definately- jacked up nicely for that. Dunno why visual voicemail isn't as loud...maybe because they were recorded in the old and busted volume settings before update?

yeah, I can't really tell that the speaker is that much louder. This double tap space bar thing rocks though. Worth losing all my apps over. I'm so used to seeing Summerboard that it's kinda weird not being able to scroll the app launcher but I'm sure they'll hack it soon.

I'll wait for firmware 1.1.1 to come out from nullriver. I need IRC and chat more than I need volume updates as the volume through my headset is fine and I can always hear the phone when it rings or alerts so for me the course of action is pretty clear.

IRC client(s) decent?

Colloquy has been ported to the iPhone and it is pretty decent yes. I chat with a large number of developers via IRC and since my E61 is now crippled due to some sim funkiness - the iPhone is the only (not crap Palm) keyboard phone that I have available.

Ran the update. It re-activates your phone afterward. The Wifi Store is pretty nice, I gotta admit. Very slick. It is a shame, though, that you can't buy TV shows or movies or download podcasts with it. Ah well.

It's probably a space issue. I wouldn't expect those to be available via WiFi until a 32GB Touch/iPhone is released.

Well, after an awesome run of having the perfect theme I'm back to a plain jane vanilla iPhone.

Don't mind, though. I'm completely convinced that Installer.app and my few installed apps were somehow crowding memory and causing frequent Safari and even iPod crashes.

Really? How many apps did you have installed?? Haven't come across those problems yet...my Iphone is like Tony the Tiger. Its grrrrrrreat!

Couldn't find a 4GB iPhone in San Diego yesterday so I got an 8GB model...

Unlocked that sucka and got it working with T-Mobile...

The phone is amazing! I'm loving it!

Updated my phone last night. The speaker volume increase is great, as that was my only problem with the iPod. The improved home key functionality also makes a lot of sense. And I don't know, maybe its just me, but the update seems to have improved my battery life a bit. I'm not sure if that was an intended fix, or if the new firmware simply makes everything run more efficiently, but I can definitely notice a difference.

I just updated last night as well... havent really had a chance to check it all out, but the stuff I did try, I like...

Now give me my iChat Apple. Come on!!!!!

some more info on 1.1.1

Ambrosia's Andrew Welch notes that the new system will be much harder to hack, even for an application like iToner:

Here's what we know. It looks like Apple is locking down the iPhone with encryption and signing, the same way they locked down the iPod Touch. We're working to see what we can find out, if there is a way around it, we will find it.

But this is not a good curve that Apple has thrown at us.

and this is from macrumors.com...

Some early upgraders of iPhone Firmware 1.1.1 who are accustomed to 3rd party applications may be interested in restoring their iPhones to the previous firmware, version 1.0.2.

At the moment, this does not appear to be possible due to the new firmware's use of upgraded GSM modem firmware, which is not downgrade-able by simply applying the old system firmware. More information can be found via this hackint0sh forum thread.

The reception of this phone is really killing me. It's literally unusable for me inside my place. I have to step outside to make phone calls. I've never had to do that with a cell phone before....sigh

Are you running 1.1.1? My reception has improved to full bars just about everywhere that it was nonexistent a week ago. I also have yet to see Edge drop out.

Looks like 1.02 it is for a while...mainly I want my custom ringtones without having to pay 3 times for 'em (I want to use some Kanye West and Chamillionaire songs as ringtones, but I already bought both CDs, actual CDs from the stores not iTunes albums. No way in hell I'm buying a song that I want to use as a ringtone twice, then pay for it to be converted as well).

Then think of it another way. With most other carriers that sell ringtones you'd pay more than $1.99 for it and you wouldn't be able to select which area of the song it came from. Not to mention most carrier ringtone selections are fairly limited, while in some cases on iTunes a whole album is ringtone-able (not just singles / hits).

Except I had a RAZR before the iPhone and I got to make my own mp3 ringtones for free :/...if you could just purchase a ringtone for .99 without buying the actual song, I'd have no qualms about it, but I don't want to end up paying $1.98 for a portion of a song I've already paid for :/

iChat would take away from SMS money, so I won't hold my breath waiting for it - unless you think that hackers who had to figure out the API built Mobichat and Apple couldn't.

That's an AT&T issue, believe me.

Yeah.

It will register as nearly full bars when it's just sitting there but once I make a call it drops to 1 or 2. Once I step outside the problem fixes itself but even shitty pay to go phones haven't worked this poorly for me.

A real buzz kill sadly.

Woah woah woah. I looked in my ring tone folder earlier and confirmed that all the custom tracks I put on there were gone.

But I just got a call from a friend with a custom ring tone and his song still played. O_o

Shit, now I have ghost songs on my iPhone.

>:(

What did you use to put the customs on in the first place? Also, did you install 1.1 over your old hacked phone, or did you resync and reformat before updating? I wouldn't mind updating if I retained custom ring tones, even if they're invisible.

So here is my situation. My contract with US Cellular runs out in November. The 26th to be exact. I also have an unlocked/hacked iphone. I was thinking of going to AT&T and then just re-hacking my iphone, but I was also thinking of probably just going to T-Mobile. If worse comes to worse, AT&T is where I go...but if I can get a better plan, why not right?

I really do NOT care about itunes on my iphone. I'm OK with the way the iphone is right now w/out the newest updates. My only problem tho is, come November (and lets say the phone is not hacked) I'm gonna have to restore my iphone back to its original condition...and there's also a credit check before making the switch. I'm sure I'll be fine but those things are like tests, they freak me out sometimes.

So, if you were me and I were you, what would you do in my situation? Anyone have anything other than AT&T and have a better plan with Tmobile? I know Tmobile also offers EDGE, how is that?

any advice would be good...I just wish I could keep my hacked iphone when I sign up for AT&T (if I must.)

Thanks!

EDIT: I'm in Chicago, IL if that helps some.

I used iToner and I just updated it over the old phone. I figured it'd just delete any unauthorized ring tones, not "paint over" them.

Eh, whatever, I'm sure in time it'll be fixed. And if it doesn't I can just wipe my phone and reload my iPhone play list.

Huh? I updated mine yesterday. What are you talking about?

If your phone is unlocked or if you have 3rd party applications, you cannot update....unless you want to totally fuck it up.

I had a similar situation... I had pictures I took of my friends with my iphone so I could attach them to their contacts... then I had to restore my iphone to get rid of the 3rd party apps, and when it backed up after the restore, I lost my pictures that I took, but then when my friend called me his picture still came up... I think when you attach a custom ringtone or picture to a contact it saves it on the hdd in an area that doesnt get erased because its your contact list.

I'm fully aware. Your earlier post made it look like you thought it couldn't be updated period, which of course makes no sense.

Hmm... I've been wondering about this. If I take a picture with the iPhone, set that picture as someone's pic in the phone list contacts, then delete that picture from the "Pictures" section of the phone, the copy in the contact list... does it stay or do you get a blank picture (file not found)?

Well since I restored my iphone and every pic I took of my friends were deleted yet they were still attached to their contact info, makes me believe that they are stored in the contacts folder as a backup...

Why dont you take a pic of something random. attach it to a person in contacts, and then delete the photo from the camera roll and see what happens

When you set a picture to a contact, it does store it inthe contact info. When I sync to outlook, now whenever the person emails me there is a pic of them in the message header space to.

OK, just tried it. The pic in the contact list remains, however you cannot do anything else with it, like e-mail it to someone. So it's basically trapped in your phone. The reason I was hesitant to try it is because I took a really good picture in "Pictures" and didn't want to lose it. However, your post made me realize I can just take a random picture of nothing to test it out.

False. If you have 3rd party applications, updating your iPhone is completely safe.

What? I thought it removes the apps from the sunboard. I mean they stay in your machine, but the links are broken...?

It removes the 3rd party apps from the board, but it absolutely does not fuck up your phone.

Oh alright, so if lets say I wanted a legit account with AT&T all I'd hve to do is hit restore, and then activate? I'm mostly worried bout the "brick" when I try to go legit.

there is a big difference between 3rd party and unlocking. Unlocked phones have had the modem firmware changed, and that is causing problems with the new update.

Phoenix said:
Removed applications != fucked up except maybe if you're Ballmer arguing to the EU about removing Windows Media Player from Vista.

I was talking about unlocked phones being fucked up when updating.

What I said:

unlocked phones aren't bricked, it just relocks the phone.

Anyone who goes to the trouble to unlock the iPhone should no not to update unless they decide to go with AT&T, but it's not going to brick their phone.

Yeah, but the bit about "or if you have 3rd party apps" is wrong.

Let's start over:

If you update your phone with 3rd party apps, it removes them
If you update your unlocked phone, it fucks it up.

BZZT Wrong again.

Unlocked phones that update, dont even work with AT&T Sims.. so the PHONE is bricked, and cannot be reactivated.

im currently entering my second hour of being on hold with at&t customer service to activate my iphone because they refuse to bill to puerto rico. i want to hang up so bad, this kind of torture should be a military training excersise.
