Thinking about getting an iPhone tomorrow... I had one important question... how is AIM on this thing? Also does AIM on iPhone allow access to chatrooms? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks!

There's no native AIM on the iPhone. You have two options, neither of which have chatroom support.

1) Web-based AIM. Best one is the beejive client (do a google search). Supports AIM, GTalk, and a few others I think. Works pretty well but you won't get notified when you get a new message.

2) Native IM app. Needs to be "hacked" onto your phone using Installer.app. There are two right now in decent shape -- Apollo IM and MobileChat. They work decently, will alert you when you get a new message by buzzing or playing a sound even when your phone is locked, but they do tend to eat your battery life and have bugs in them still.

I personally stick with beejive at the moment.

Thanks for the answers yayaba...

I had a quick question... I plan on getting a 4GB iPhone tomorrow or Friday and will be unlocking it and using T-Mobile...

While using an unlocked iPhone via T-Mobile is there anything I'm missing out on aside from the visual voice mail?

I have the Sidekick unlimited data plan for my SKII, I'm assuming this will carry over to the iPhone and I'll be able to send unlimited text/emails etc.... if anyone can confirm that would be much appreciated.

meebo.com is also pretty good.

1.1.1 is out.

Those with unlocked phones, make sure your autosync is off before connecting to itunes; reports of sim unlocks not working post-update.

Phone also needs to be reactivated post-update.

fun times!

Removes them? That seems odd. It's cool to see that Apple doesn't seem to be bricking iPhones that are unlocked -- you just can't update.

I think the legal liability for bricking a phone is too great for Apple to ever actually do something like that. It'd be a huge PR problem, even if the law did allow them to permanently disable phones.

Some unlocked phones (phones using networks other than AT&T) are apparently showing "Invalid SIM" errors after the update. I say some 'cuz one guy on a forum I go to says he's on Rogers (in Canada) and it didn't give him that error post-update.

Jailbroken phones (just hacked to use Intaller.app, etc.) aren't bricked, but post-update don't have Installer.app anymore. I don't think I've heard whether it can be re-installed, but it's unlikely.

iToner doesn't work now either, btw.

I use iphone.beejive.com

Its a great AIM app and works really well... Better than the other AIM clients I have tried...

Interesting. Guess I'll be waiting till the weekend's out to debate the update. Wi-Fi store or iFlickr?!

Thats easy... wi-fi store... I have seen your pics from the phone on iflickr and my neck hurts from looking at them sideways... :)

Also can't you set up an email address on flickr and just email pics you take with the phone to that to auto-upload? I believe I read that somewhere.

Edit: And yes, you can.

so I can only get to the iTunes through my phone with Wi-Fi? I was hoping to get on through AT&T's online service.

Yep, only Wifi. I'm guessing it wouldn't work too well just over EDGE.

I'd rather have the phone upload the pics automatically. One less step and only takes a few seconds on Wi-Fi, maybe about a minute on Edge.

BTW

Update 3:26PM: OK, I have updated to 1.1.1 in my unlocked iPhone. It works. You have to put the AT&T card before starting. Video upcoming. Testing of unlock too.

Update 3:04PM: Benny restored his iPhone successfully. However, apparently the third-parties apps may still be inside the iPhone. The upgrade seems to take the apps out of the springboard, but not from the flash. Dev Team confirms this was expected, the iPhone update just clears the plist.

doh! the 1.1.1 update killed all my .m4a > .m4r ringtones I made.... some guy in the office is saying you have to go in and edit the meta-data of the file now and not just change the extension.... halp!

Ok the update is out.. I just got my 4gb iphone in the mail today. I haven't opened it yet. I don't care about updating as I'd rather continue to use T-mobile then to switch to Cingular.. Before I open the iphone packaging, can I still unlock, not update and be on T-mobile? ie: is the unlock still possible now the update is out?

If not I'll just return it unopened...Thanks in advance!

You can still unlock it using the existing tools pre-update, but if you update the firmware, none of the tools will probably work, so it's either an unlocked phone w/o update or move to Cingular -- for now, at least.

Gonna go out on a limb here and guess that any ring tones added with iToner are going to be removed, yeah?

I have not tried it myself but from all indications that is the case, yes. Ambrosia is probably already working on a fix.

Ok.. For some reason I thought that when you do the unlock you have auto update before hand... I have the correct version of itunes downloaded to unlock and such.. Time for unlocking! :D

thanks eXxy

I just read that my firmware must be 1.02 to do unlock.. most likely my iphone is pre that upate.. is there anyway to specifically update to version 1.02??

Im abo to get my iphone in an hour. How long did it take you guys to activate your phones? And when did the wow factor fade away for you?

If you're activating AT&T service through iTunes it just takes a few minutes. Very easy. The wow factor has still not faded away for me and I got my phone at launch.

WOW. Fucking Apple - I was gonna use my store credit from the rebate to buy 100 bucks in iTunes credit and it gives me this -
Because your order includes an Apple Gift Card or an iTunes Music Store Gift Certificate, you cannot pay using an Apple Gift Card.
Is there any way I could still buy credit with this, maybe in the store?

Here is a list of fixes/updates in 1.1.1

• iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
• Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
• Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites of music controls
• Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
• Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
• Stocks and cities in Stocks and Waether can be re-ordered
• Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
• Support for TV Out
• Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
• New Passcode lock time intervals
• Adjustable alert volume

Haven't seen anything about weirdness. What's your source? (Though I always encourage waiting a few days when Apple is concerned).

Here are some more updates I have seen over at macrumors.com/iphone

As expected, the iPhone 1.1.1 Update will remove all 3rd party applications when you update.

Simply reinstalling Installer.app will not work as the Installer.app application is firmware specific. At present only supports firmwares 1.0, 1.0.1 and 1.0.2.

We are hopeful that nullriver will be able to update their installer to support 1.1.1, but there are no guarantees. If 3rd party support is important to you, you should wait to update your iPhone to 1.1.1.

Some brave souls have tried to update their SIM Unlocked iPhones to 1.1.1 and there appear to have been mixed results.

Jonathan Seff at iPhoneCentral gave it a shot and found that his unlocked iPhone now gives an "Incorrect SIM" error. He even went to an AT&T store who gave him a new SIM and still no luck.

Meanwhile, a few anecdotal reports indicate that some people have been able to successfully upgrade their unlocked iPhone to 1.1.1 without any ill consequences.

At this early stage, we'd recommend people with Unlocked iPhones continue to wait to update while more definitive testing has been done.

So glad I opted to just stay away from the homebrew scene. I simply don't have the time to worry about compatability issues and unexpected brickings from software updates. Good luck with getting your custom cool stuff updated.

Having the homebrew apps makes any update Apple has released so far kinda pointless.
It'll be a while before they release anything remotely as cool as what i'm able do on my "hacked" iPhone right now.

I'll keep it at its current version until it's all sorted out becasue i seriously won't miss being able to access the iTunes WiFi store or their awesome new password setting.....

Exactly. Some of the things in the update are pretty crucial to me actually using the phone. Adjustable volume on the alerts is awesome, for one. Updating now....

Exactly. I would love to have improved earpiece and speakerphone volume, but does it outweigh having an AIM app, customizable themes/SpringBoard Wallpaper, and free custom ringtones?

NOPE.

And I think the Wi-Fi iTunes Music Store isn't something I'll be using much at all anyway, seeing as I don't really buy music from the iTMS (only time I did get anything was when I got a iTMS gift card from a friend).

I'd say basic functionality of the phone is more important than wallpaper or ringtones by a longshot.

Um, the phone works fine? The update just lets you make things louder, which, IIRC, you can already do with a download via installer.app.

Ran the update. It re-activates your phone afterward. The Wifi Store is pretty nice, I gotta admit. Very slick. It is a shame, though, that you can't buy TV shows or movies or download podcasts with it. Ah well.

Im sure those will come, in time.

Hey Guys,

I'm out of town on vacation, but noticed that the update game today, so I jumped on the WiFi at the resort to get my phone up to date. The update looks good to me, even though custom ringtones are gone. Again. Argh!

I'll be updating later tonight. Audible calls >>> custom apps

(this is really more a criticism of the utility of the homebrew apps out there)

OH MY FUCKING GOD. They refuse to bill to Puerto Rico for new activations. I read this NO WHERE when going through the payment plans. Im so pissed right now.

got my iphone! :D fuckin rocks.. not unlocking it until im 100% sure it wont get bricked if i ever decide to update

question, its not letting me put songs on it? the phone was activated by the original owner, do i need to restore the phone to the original settings?

I'll wait for firmware 1.1.1 to come out from nullriver. I need IRC and chat more than I need volume updates as the volume through my headset is fine and I can always hear the phone when it rings or alerts so for me the course of action is pretty clear.
