If your phone isn't receiving calls, the most likely explanation is probably a poor connection to the tower resulting in a really time-consuming check for Mail. Do you have it set up to check your mail every 15 minutes? When my phone doesn't have a proper Edge connection, I've been able to pick apart that it'll actually lock up the connection for 5-7 minutes every 15 minutes attempting to connect to my mail server. That results in nearly a half-the-time failure to receive calls, which all go straight to voicemail.

Nope, I have that battery-hog of a feature turned off.

Yah, I have mine on manual, plus Im pretty sure I had full bars and thats the first time it has ever happend. Of course I can make calls but anytime someone calls me, it goes straight to voicemail.

Hopefully the problem doesn't persist, bc this is my house phone as well.

What 3rd party apps would you recommend I download? Any good themes you guys would recommend?

I don't want to go overboard cause it'll affect the performance of the device, a few really good 3rd party apps is all I'm looking for.

If you're worried about affecting performance of the device, don't bother jailbreaking or putting any 3rd party apps on. I jailbroke a few months ago and put *one* app on there -- Apollo IM. That froze the phone a couple times and the jailbreak made everything run a little choppier. I decided it wasn't worth the trouble, restored, and haven't looked back. Waiting to see what Apple has to say in terms of more apps at MWSF next week.

I think the performance of the device depends a lot of the 3rd party apps you choose to install. I actually haven't installed Apollo IM yet (because it required some other runtime to be installed first which was a red flag regarding a potential performance hit for me personally). I have tried to be fairly choosy with the stuff I've installed, only using apps that I think I really want (not just everything that sounds cool) and that have had several revisions to smooth out bugs. I haven't noticed any kind of performance hit in going about it this way.

I haven't installed any themes because I think that's pretty much guaranteed to produce a noticeable hit in performance and there's no theme considerably better than the default theme right now anyway.

As for apps I recommend, I think we should create a separate iPhone/iPod Touch app thread where everyone can review apps so we can have kind of a general GAF consensus.

Apps I recommend are MobileScrobbler, which plays last.fm stations on your phone, very very awesome.

Stumbler can find hidden and other WiFi networks, and Books can... read books.

At this point, I think I'd just wait for the SDK to hit. The whole landscape changes when that happens, and a lot of these apps will become "official", meaning you won't have to jailbreak and stability issues will likely be less of a problem.

The wait is unbearable!

I'm waiting for the official 3rd party apps, there's no way I'm risking jail breaking my itouch. It seems stupid that apple didn't include a notes app by default... its something i really need.

What makes you say that the release of the SDK will mean that the iPhone becomes an open platform?

I wouldn't hold it against Apple to oversee everything released for it, and that "official" applications would only be available through iTunes.

Close enough.

No one said it would become an open platform, but indications are that it's gong to open up quite a bit. Apple has already stated that they want to keep a high level of quality to the apps, while maintaining security and stability on the phone.

All I'm saying, is that it's kind of silly to not wait at this point, when it's not that far off, and we'll learn a lot more about their plans. Hell, we'll probably know more next week!

Besides, what's the problem with "official" apps being available through iTunes? It would make a perfect conduit for installing apps on the iPhone.

No problem, as long as Apple isn't too stingy with approving applications. I can for instance see them rejecting VOIP apps to appease the carriers.

I could easily see that too. And understandably so.

Unfortunately that`s not an option, i need to have my machine jailbreaked to unlock the phone for use on Rogers. I might virginize and eventually upgrade (when it`s safe to do so), but at the time being a jailbreaked phone with a few apps hasn`t really affected performance in my case.

I got my iPhone this week - updated from 1.0.2 to 1.1.2 (using a guide from iClarified). Result is a nice unlocked and jailbroken iPhone :D

I recommend Customise - it crashed on me once, but it's indispensible for turning off the icons that you don't want and reordering your Springboard.

If you need it unlocked, than I understand where you're coming from. Of course, you're playing with fire a bit, but as long as updates don't brick it, and the hacking community isn't destroyed by the SDK, you'll be fine.

If Apple is stingy about releasing apps via iTunes, wouldn't the SDK at least bolster the homebrew community's ability to produce better apps?

Perhaps. The SDK will obviously allow anyone who programs for the iPhone to learn more about the OS and hardware and code more effectively for it. We could see an even bigger hacking community depending on Apple's approach. if that's the case, those who have Jailbroken their phone will get better apps while those of us who have avoided going down that road will finally get some of those same apps in an official capacity.

If the program is very open, the hacking community will probably move away from the Jailbrake approach and join the "official" process for release, leaving some of those who have unlocked their phones out in the cold. I'm guessing the reality will be somewhere in the middle though. We just have to wait until next week to see if we get more word on how this will all work. It'll definitely be interesting, and I'm sure it's going to be a boon for both camps.

just a general question. I have had my iPhone since
November and have noticed that sometimes when I send an email or reply using the mail app, the program will say the email was sentand lake the airplane sound...but when I go to check to see if it sent I'm the sent mail I find out that it didn't! Us this common or is there something up with my iPhone? I use yahoo btw. Thanks!

Does anyone have any ideas of how to remove (or at least hide a bit) a scratch in the metal on the back of the iPhone. Somehow, during my trip to Fort Lauderdale this week my iPhone developed about a 3/4 inch scratch on the back, to the right of the Apple logo. You can see black in the scratch, which seemed odd since I thought the back was solid, but perhaps not. Just wondering if anyone knew anything? It's so unsightly! :(

Quick question:

Is there any such thing as a Mac or Windows formatted iPhone? I currently have my iPhone connected to a PC, but will be getting a Mac laptop in the near future. Will I have to format it to make it work with the Mac like with the iPod? I don't feel like copying over all of my contacts twice.

You shouldn't have a problem connecting to either machine as long as it has iTunes. Not sure about the contact list stuff, because I only have that sync to my powerbook. On my pc I generally just use it to copy off photos, put more music on, etc.

Good, because connecting iPods to either OS is a pain in the ass.

I originally had more problems with an ipod video on WinXP. Right now, tho, I have no problem connecting my iphone to Vista or Leopard between my machines. the OSX install is where I keep all my stuff sync'd up, but so far has been pretty smooth in Vista itunes as well.

Ok, so I finally bit the bullet and bought the iPhone. But I want to make sure I can still do something.

I'm currently using my gf's old iPod mini between two iTunes libraries - one on my personal computer, one on my laptop. (NOTE: The majority of music is content from iTunes.) Would I still be able to plug into both and load music from both? Or would I only be able to load music from one computer?

Thanks.

Don't know if this was answered...but I don't think so? At least for me on my Jailbroken iPhone, I can't manually add songs. They have to be auto-synced. If you have it auto-syncing between 2 computers...well, that just won't work. But I think this might be because of the Jailbreak? I don't know about that one.

No such thing as a Mac or Windows formatted iPhone, but it does only allow being synced to one computer at a time, whether it's Mac or PC. If you want to switch to the new Mac going forward it shouldn't be a problem and if all your contacts are on your iphone, they should all just be transferrable over to the Mac address book.

just read this on macrumors.com

Earlier this week, a third party package named "iPhone firmware 1.1.3 prep" became available via Installer.app. ModMyiPhone.com was first to identify it as malicious, and F-Secure later confirmed the low-risk threat.

The trojan installation package contains false application installation information that causes legitimate third party applications to be removed if the trojan is uninstalled from the iPhone.

The package was quickly removed from distribution after identification of malicious characteristics. Additionally, F-Secure states that the author was an "11-year-old kid playing with XML files." F-Secure warns that a more experienced coder could have done more damage.

Security will be one of the top concerns of Apple's upcoming SDK, as Steve Jobs had alluded to Nokia's system of digitally signing applications.

Nokia, for example, is not allowing any applications to be loaded onto some of their newest phones unless they have a digital signature that can be traced back to a known developer. While this makes such a phone less than "totally open," we believe it is a step in the right direction. We are working on an advanced system which will offer developers broad access to natively program the iPhone’s amazing software platform while at the same time protecting users from malicious programs.

I saw that several days ago as well, and Jobs has said all along that security was a major concern. Probably means that all "official apps" will have to go through iTunes, but I'm perfectly ok with that personally as long as they are secure and stable.

You can so manually add songs, videos. You have to sync, but not 'auto-sync'.

I just keep a master playlist and add remove songs as necessary.

I dropped mine out of an SUV on to the street the day I got mine. Surprisingly, there are hardly any scratches. A couple nicks on the back, that's it. I suggest getting something like the Agent18 case I recommended a few pages back.

Question:

Swirly MMS. I read that in order for it to work, you have to contact AT&T and have them add Multimedia messaging. That can't be so. What's the deal?

The settings on this page have been reported by users to work. The list is not complete...

If your settings work and are not listed here and if you would like to share, you are welcome to send them by mail to tommy or mats at swirlyspace dot com, and we will put them up in this list. Or post a message about your working settings in this thread on hackint0sh.

So I just updated to the new firmware its pretty slick...

The only negative I have so far is that the gps like functionality isnt working properly for me. I am in my room right now on a wifi signal and when I hit the target button to triangulate my position, it puts me at least 5-7mi away from my house... Wonder why its off...

I've heard some people's "other" storage has shot up to about 200MB and some have had their other stay around the 20MB range. I don't have an iphone but what does this mean?

i have a jailbroken 1.1.2 and am trying to decide between upgrading or not... is 1.1.3 really that worth it?

It probably depends on how many towers and hot spots it can locate. I was shocked when I tried it. It pinpointed me to the exact city block.

If I wanted to have a background, my phone needs to be jailbroken - correct?

Now that we can have pages for our icons, I'd love to make little images for my phone custom to how I arrange them. I just have the feeling I'll have to wait for an app though.

I'm having similar issues with the "gps" functionality.

I've tried it in a few locations now, and both times the map pinpointed me roughly 5 miles away.

The GPS issues happened with me with a jailbroken iphone and navizon. It will never be accurate. It was usually off by about 2-3 miles for me where ever I went. Technically, they use 3 cell towers to triangulate your signal, so it will never be precise

Just got my iphone. Haven't opened it up yet. Going to wait a day or two to make sure I REALLY want it. :) What's the best case for the phone?

I want a case that will allow me to dock the phone without removing it. It will most likely be held in my pants pocket when I walk around. What do you all recommend?

maps found me within about 30 feet! Unfortunately my apartment is 30 ft from a major highway, so the directions it gives me are all way off on the front-end

So later this week I will be picking up the phone. Dont know if I should get it unlocked and jailbroken. I really hate the idea of extending my current contract with ATT and I also lose my company discount if I pick up the iphone. Would ATT know if I have an iphone if im using it unlocked on their network???

Totally agree! The iPhone gets better with each update and this one is the best so far. I love how the update to include Chapters for video works with the DVD's I ripped in Handbrake months ago. Awesome stuff!

There aren't enough cell towers within the triangulation radius so it is showing you the location of the cell tower which your cell-id is coming from. I wrote an application that uses triangulation for android and I would run across the same thing, especially when I got deeper into suburbia or rural areas.
