I came over from Verizon when I got my iPhone and the process couldn't be simpler. Took about an hour or so to get my old number activated on the iPhone, and I got a letter from Verizon a week later confirming the cancellation of service.

Activating the iPhone was the first time I had ported a number, so I didn't realize Verizon would automatically be canceled! It was awesome. Saves me an awkward phone call with all their worthless pitches for me to stay.

So, just to bring this up again -- what are some of the better headphones people use for the iPhone? I was going to buy an extra pair of Apple-branded ones but thought maybe I should go with a different brand if there was something better. Have any come out since this question was last brought up?

Expensive as hell, but these look nice:

$179 though. Personally, I just use the included ones for now. If they break I'll probably look for other solutions.

Just to add onto this. I have a good pair of headphones already. They of course do not fit in the iPhone's jack.

I saw this at the apple store.

This would seem to give me what I'm looking for phone accessability with the heaphones with of my choice but $40 is a bit steep.

I did find this item.

It's only $15. Anyone have this product or can anyone recommend me a simliar product?

Iphone headphone adapters

I still have no idea why apple can't make one similar to the TTY adapter

Some people claim this will work, others don't. I have no idea but its $20 and I don't want to waste money testing it!

edit: well I just ordered the griffen one to go along with my new Grado S80 headphones.

They go to my ringtones section but they won't transfer over... hmmm

Thanks for this! Worked like a charm.

OK. This is really getting on my nerves.

Did they remove the 'auto check e-mail' feature in 1.1.2? It's right there in the mail settings on 1.1.1. But not in 1.1.2.

What's the deal with that?

^

What I've always used. Although prior to the most recent build, I'd often get artificating for like a few seconds in the very beginning of some videos. The brightness, during that time would be really high, then it goes away. Sometimes it did it, sometimes it didn't.

Still there for me in 1.1.3, under "Settings/Mail/Messages". It's the first item in the list.

What's the best tool to cut up an MP3 for my Mac? I might want to make up some ring tones.

You can actually do it through iTunes. In the info window, change the start/stop times to whatever you want within 39 seconds, hit ok, then convert it to AAC. It should just encode the part of the song within the start/stop times. After that proceed with changing the file extension to .m4r and re-add it to iTunes. That should do it.

I just checked again and the only things available for toggle under 'messages' is Show/Preview/Minimum Font Size/Show To|Cc Label and Ask Before deleting.

I fail to see the point of those when you have to unplug them every time you receive a call.

After doing some poking around, it looks like if the iPhone believes your service to be auto-push (like Yahoo!), it won't give you the option. Might that be what's happening?

Why does Apple still side with AT&T for the iPhone?

Doesn't make much sense to me.
Jobs made AT&T make several unprecedented concessions in the deal, including revenue sharing and altering the way their network operates for features like visual voicemail.

The trade-off was five years of exclusivity with AT&T.

Wow it's 5 years?

Since this thread gets way more traffic than the Touch thread...

I'm trying to put some DVDs on the Touch, but I have a couple of n00bie questions:

1) I'm using DVD Decrypter (PC version) to rip them. What's the difference between "File Mode" and "IFO Mode"? I noticed that the rip using "IFO Mode" was smaller in size...is there a quality loss? Any advantage to one over the other?

2) I'm using Handbrake (PC version) to encode them. I noticed there are 3 iPod presets: iPod Touch/iPhone (480), iPod Hi-Res (640), and iPod Low-Res (320). Is there a significant quality difference between the 480 resolution and 640 resolution? What is the file size difference between the two? Which do you guys use and recommend for the iPod Touch?

I can only comment on this since I have used Handbreak on my Mac.

I've done the iPod Touch/iphone preset then tweaked it a bit. I enable 2 pass, change the bit rate to 200, and in the audio portion I choose stereo instead of surround sound.

I ripped a season of Arrested Development on these settings and each episode (~27-28min) are between 50 - 60 MB. I think the picture is pretty good considering the file size.

Has the 5 year exclusivity thing ever been confirmed? I always heard it was speculation, but didn't know that it was confirmed by either side. Besides, if not AT&T, who is Apple suppose to take the iPhone too? T-Mobile? :lol Verizon had the first opportunity and turned them down. And judging from the announcements from Sprint today they may have taken the brunt of the defections to AT&T.

I haven't used DVD Decrypter, Mac User here, but I'd say if IFO mode gives you the smaller file size, go for it. Play it on your iPhone and see if you can see a difference. I'm guessing probably not, and smaller is better when it comes to file size if you don't compromise quality.

I do use Handbrake for ripping and encoding, on the Mac. I have created my own custom settings for the iPhone to once again reduce file size. I have the resolution set to 480 though, as that's the width of the iPhone screen, and I have it maintain aspect ratio. Everything I've put on it so far has looked great. I've ripped the original 3 Star Wars films and just recently Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Thanks, maynerd and Kung Fu Jedi! Very helpful!

So are there add-on's to Handbrake for the MAC version? Or is it just superior? The PC version of Handbrake does not rip newer encrypted DVDs at all. :-(

I'm just now looking into the Iphone and I may get one once it becomes cheaper. Isn't it possible to use internet radio over the Iphone? Is there a way I could hook it into my car stereo system? I think this may be a cheap way to bypass satellite radio for free. :D

Cheap in the sense that I get an Iphone and free tunes. The initial fee of buying the phone is more expensive than getting started with XM radio of course.

When I downloaded Handbrake, I took a peek in the forums, and it looks like there are quite a few tools out there if you're having issues with specific discs. Frankly, I'll be happy if/when more movies start coming with digital copies on-disc. I'd buy a special edition DVD for $5-8 more if that was one of the features....

I think the lack of flash on the iPhone makes this a bit limited. I am not well knowledged on the subject though. I would imagine when the SDK comes out and apps start coming that we will see some things.

Is anyone planning on downloading Lotus for their iPhones? I'm kind of interested in it. It's free right?

I absolutely will use it. I just hope my IT department doesn't have to do anything for me, because they won't.

Edit: Well, that link makes it look like if I'm already a full-blown Lotus user with a Domino server, I'm set.

I'm in kind of a bind...

I was just jailbreaking my iPhone using iFuntastic and it is currently in Recovery Mode. How can I get it out of this? I just realized that I need to upload my photos beforehand. Am I fucked?

I'm having trouble converting the ACC file to .m4r. Where does the ACC file end up, and how do I rename the extension?

If you can't find the AAC file, it should still be in your iTunes after you convert it; just right-click it and hit "Get Info" and you'll be able to see it's location. Then when you get to the file, right-click it and hit rename and change the .m4a extension to .m4r and add it back to the iTunes library.

Ugh, new problem:

After updating to 1.1.3 my iPhone repeatedly prompts me to enter my voicemail password regardless of where I'm at on the phone. I've never had to input one before and no matter what I press it tells me that I'm incorrect. What's the deal?

I've tried any password that I ever usually use including my phone number and nothing seems to work.

I'm about to go to bed, but sure.

I dunno. It came 1.1.1, I jailbroke it, activated it, installed Okto prep, upgraded to 1.1.2, jailbroke that, and got anySIM 1.2.1u.

I run it (in Airplane mode) and it keeps saying anySIM cannot unlock this phone. Blah blah.

Did I miss a step, am I doing it wrong? I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.

you need to downgrade the 1.1.1 phone to 1.0.2 then unlock then upgrade to 1.1.1 then unlock then upgrade to 1.1.2. you missed the downgrade to 1.0.2. I did that several times on different iPhones.

Now you need to revirginze ist (then it is already at 1.0.2.) and then unlock 1.0.2, then 1.1.1, then octoprep, then 1.1.2, then anysim.
