It's almost impossible to brick your phone using software.

Put your phone into DFU mode by holding down sleep & home, and let go after sleep after 10 seconds (but not home). It should then show up in iTunes.

Yeah it finally showed up in iTunes. Now I'm wonder what to do, should I restore it to 1.1.1, unlock it then upgrade back to 1.1.3?

Restore straight to 1.1.3

Then get an AT&T contract and forget about Installer.app

AT&T Customer ? Just restore to 1.1.3

Other carrier ? Restore to 1.1.1, oktoprep and upgrade to 1.1.2, jailbreak, unlock with anySIM 1.21u or use iNdependance to do it for you. Then follow the soft 1.1.3 upgrade instructions.

You could try a straight restore to 1.1.2 but it's probably not best that you do.

Well they'll still be in the installer program under "uninstall", but yeah it'll wipe them out of the dash. I tried to uninstall the programs (to save space) and it fucked up my iPhone. If you're looking to upgrade uninstall all the programs first if you don't want them taking up space on the phone.

Or just do a restore which will remove everything from the phone and then you can just sync with iTunes and get everything back.
 
Is there really a point upgrading to 1.1.3 now that we can? Seems like if you have a perfectly acceptable 1.1.2jb phone just leave it. Until the SDK comes out or some fancy feature that is. Even then, don't update until the hackers have got it down to a T on how to approach updating.

I updated for the hell of it since I'm not really using any of the installer apps. So far I quite like it, moving around icons is dead easy (and cool looking to boot), saving a webpage on your dash is also a welcomed feature (it also saves the way you zoomed in). One touch GAF on the road, which is pre-zoomed to the area where new threads come up :)

Something people should note, this update does NOT upgrade the baseband so any unlocked iPhones will be fine. Mine got fucked up and when I went back to 1.1.1 the unlock was still active, it does not touch the modification done by AnySim. But there's a downside to this, since the baseband isn't upgraded the new Google Maps feature, the faux-GPS locator feature, doesn't work. That requires a baseband upgrade, a big no-no if you're using a software unlocking solution.
 
Well, it seems that I'm not meant to upgrade my iPhone today. Apparently, the Terminal process went well and everything was ready, I just needed to install the soft-update via Install.app ... then Installer told me there was an script error and that the process couldn't be completed. Luckily, nothing broke and it seems I still have a completely functional 1.1.1 iPhone.

Early reports indicate that the OS X tool does not display error messages. Something crapped out while crafting the firmware image but the program didn't tell me.

I'm calling it a day for today. I will see how this develops tomorrow and I *might* give it another go if another version of the tool is released. Alas, further reading about the drawbacks of updating made me reconsider the upgrade. My iPhone works GREAT as it is, and I could do well without the functions of 1.1.3... that is until the SDK is released. Great apps are a-comin' guys! -And I'm looking to you, MobileScrobler!-
 
Ok after messing around with this for a few hours...I'm not a fan of it.

My purchased music doesn't work, the E for Edge doesn't come up, there's some weird glitch with sound output sometimes. Overall, bleh.

Went back to 1.1.1, going to stick with that.

Guess I need to hit up an AT&T store tomorrow :( I thought all this stuff was supposed to be quick and effortless..

Here's my experience:

I had a 1.1.1 OOTB iPhone which I unlocked with anySIM 1.1. Everything was fine and dandy and I didn't had any reason to update to 1.1.2

1.1.3 Jailbreak news came. I jumped on the Soft-Upgrading bandwagon.

I decided to go with the Official Dev Team method... but the whole "You need to be on 1.1.2 in order to use this method" made me think twice. I was aware that, in order to have an unlocked 1.1.2, I had to use an unofficial version of anySIM and risk my iPhone. I thought about it for a while and said "Fuck it, everything's going to be fine".I did the whole 1.1.2 update dealio -including a painfully boring downgrade to 1.0.2 > update to 1.1.1> prepare the phone > upgrade to 1.1.2-. When my phone was ready to run the unofficial anySIM, I was really nervous... but in the end I ran the app.

Everything was ok. I had signal. I made a test in-&-out call. I sent and received and SMS. The hard part was over. Now I proceeded to to the also-boring-as-hell soft upgrade to 1.1.3. At first glance, everything was fine...

But reality betrayed me...

*Installer.app was broken. Couldn't install or uninstall shit. -and I was running the latest version of the app-.
*Contact and Calendar sync was also broken.

I didn't care much at the beginning, I was aware that there were problems but they all could be fixed by fiddling around the phone filesystem... but then, the main offender:

Fucking SSH was broken.

Basically, I was stuck with a flawed update and the only way out if there was to do another painfully boring downgrade to 1.1.1> prepare the phone > upgrade to 1.1.2 > upgrade to 1.1.3. I devoured a bunch of tutorials and read a lot of threads regarding the problems that users had with both versions of the jailbreak. Then I learned that my favorite app, the app that made my iPhone my most beloved gadget, MobileScrobbler, doesn't work on 1.1.3

I bailed out of the Soft-Upgrading bandwagon, and jumped on the Downgrading to 1.1.2 one.

Now, after 1 hour and a half, I have an unlocked 1.1.2 iPhone with all my apps working flawlessly. Alas, during this whole process I learned that 1.1.2 is way better than 1.1.1, mainly because of the improved battery life, "snappier" behavior of the OS, improved stability, improved speaker's volume, and the ability to export custom ringtones from GarageBand straight to iTunes with no workarounds involved.

Conclusion: If you have a jailbroken phone, don't update yet to 1.1.3. Make yourself a favor and try 1.1.2 meanwhile if you haven't. When everything gets sorted out, and when apps start working on 1.1.3, then will see.

iTunes sync is done. Talk about timing...
 
Damn it, where is voice dial?

I had it on my janky $20 Virgin Mobile phone, but not on my fancy pants iPhone? Come on Apple.

And no - I don't want to Jailbreak it to use Voice Dial. :(
 
Yes, that is correct, unfortunately. Which really sucks because mine's a 1.1.2 out-of-the-box, and the "sim solution" I bought on eBay isn't worth a crap. My signal drops all the time, and several times a day I'll notice that it just says "No SIM", which can only be fixed by popping it out and back in, or power cycling the phone. If only I'd got one a few weeks earlier. If this keeps up, I might just bite the bullet and switch to AT&T.

EDIT (six days later): Guess I just got a bad chip! The eBay seller replaced it and now it has worked flawlessly for almost a week.

So, how 'bout those new 16 giggers?
 
All 1.1.2 / 1.1.3 out of the box iPhones (with the new 4.6 bootloader) can now be unlocked by software.

If you have an original 1.0/1.1 iPhone (with the 3.9 bootloader) you can also upgrade to unlocked 1.1.3 with a restore resistant unlock which modifies the secpack. This should mean the phone stays unlocked through future Apple updates, and isn't reliant on a new version of AnySIM being released for each update.

Ha ha. I waited a month for this and finally gave up and bought a sim solution. Oh well, it was only $20. The question now is, do I unlock it, or leave it alone since it's working perfectly as is? Probably the latter, I guess. If it ain't broke, there's no reason to fix it 'till it is.
 
Unlocking it allows you to use it on carriers other than AT&T. If you already have your iPhone and are using it on the proper AT&T iPhone plan, then this probably isn't a big deal to you. But for people who live in countries where they haven't introduced it yet (like Canada), or for those like me who merely want to remain on T-Mobile (etc), it means it can finally be done without using some janky "SIM solution", which is a piece of plastic stamped with circuity that you tape to your SIM card.

Almost March? Do you live in in an alternate timeline a few weeks ahead of the rest of us? ;)

Rumor has it that Apple now has an event scheduled for the end of the month. Feb. 26th I believe, to roll out the SDK and possibly new MacBook Pros while their at it.
 
I just bought a 1.1.2 iPhone that has been jailbroken. It's coming with a turbosim which from what I understand will allow me to use my sim card. I'd like to unlock it software wise though.

But I just had a look at the quick and easy guide for it and got lost.

Could someone please link me to a guide that has the app's and such that I need to do this on a windows vista machine (Or XP if that can only be used)

Well, technically the got an update back in November, although it was a minor one. This will probably bring multi-touch like on the Air though.
 
Just got a 16gig a couple days ago after switching from a WM device (Mogul). WM has so many good things going for it, but it just flat out sucks as an actual phone. So tired of it randomly running out of batteries or crashing, of course this always happened at the most inconvenient times. So many little things never worked quite right or erratically.

I like everything about iPhone so far aside from the lack of a to-do list application. WebApps aren't going to cut it for me in that department.

Nah. I'm fine with my 8GB for now. Still have plenty of space on it. I'll wait for a more substantial upgrade before dropping the dough again.
 
I'm really really tempted by the 16GB. What is the resale for an 8GB that's been actually used and therefore has scratches on the metal part and the back?

They have very reasonable prices, actually. The premise is what you describe, but they track Ebay averages for items to determine their rates. There is a very good review of Second Rotation on Ars Technica.

I need to send them a bunch of stuff myself. They will give me $30 for my old Razr.

Does anyone know how to get around the "This Accessory not made to work with iPhone" nonsense?

I've got my phone plugged directly into my Alpine iPersonalize receiver and it works fine once I say NO to going into airplane mode. But I can't access iTunes or listen to calls through my speakers... any ideas?

Some issues were addressed in the first update, but there really isn't a way around it. It's not really nonsense either, as the accessories were designed to work with the iPod, which didn't have a cell radio or WiFi built into it.
