Does the iPhone work in the iPod stereos that hook up to iPods via the connector port / USB? Also, anyone else heard the rumors of a 3G version (with possible storage increase) coming out in a couple months?

It works with most of them, although if you leave the cell radios on, you'll get interference with the GSM signal, so you'll have to put it in Airplane Mode as ckohler has mentioned. There are some new speaker systems in the works that are designed for the iPhone however that will help with this.

Has anyone tried out this yet:

It's the Monster iSoniTalk which is a headphone adapter with an inline mic and the ability to click to pick up calls/pause/skip tracks etc. I ran by the Apple Store today with the intent of getting a headphone adapter for my iPhone, and saw this for $20 and decided to grab it. Should make any headphones work with the iPhone and allow you to pick up calls. The price wasn't bad at all, and it feels like a quality product, but I haven't tried it just yet. Nice alternative though.

That's pretty cool. I don't like the big hard long part of the adapter sticking out of the iphone.

This looks good if you can do without the inline controls.

Yeah, I would have grabbed that one had they had it at the Apple Store. I'll have to give this one a try tonight and see how it works, but you're right, the part of the adapter sticking out of the phone looks kind of bad in that picture. It doesn't seem as bad in real life, but I'll have to use it more to decide. I read a review on the Monster one over at iPod Lounge and they said that sound and use wise it was on par with the same product from Shure that costs $40.

Got my new phone with the slick white Agent 18 case and loving it all again.
Already jailbroke it and got installer on there and I got ScummVM but can someone refresh me on how to upload files through Command Prompt so I can transfer over Monkey Island?(been a while since I had my last iPhone jailbroken and i forgot :( Anyways, yeah, I tried using an FTPS program like Filezilla but I cant get it to connect for some reason. And yeah, what files do I exactly send over from the Monkey Island folder? (I have several files like an exe file, some ims files, .000, etc)

Use Installer to dl
-OpenSSH (to allow you to FTP into the phone)

Then SFTP into the phone any software you like. Its pretty simple, and there is a youtube tutorial that you can watch for added info.

What else have you uploaded? Im looking for more apps to trick my jailbroken phone out.

My System Update grabbed a new version of iTunes as well. Not sure if that released today or sometime earlier this week, but I'm guessing that both updates pave the way for the SDK.

Where's your adapter review?

The 1.1.4 firmware was released this afternoon. The only thing I could notice different was that web pages no longer have to re-download when you switch between multiple ones.

LOL! Sorry, forgot to post some thoughts. :D

So, first off, the adapter when plugged into the headphone jack isn't nearly as bad as it might appear in the photo. Sure, it's a bit large but not awkwardly so. If you've seen the other adapter by Monster, it's essentially the same as that one, with a little add on for the mic.

Anyway, I made a couple of calls with it to test it out, and in short, it works great. The sound quality is much improved over the included ear buds and the people I called said that I came through loud and clear and they couldn't really tell that I was using an external mic. The mic clips on your shirt quite nicely, although since it's separate from the headphone line, it could be awkward to use at times. I clipped it to the headphone cord though, and it worked fine.

For $20 it's been pretty good so far.

Seriously? How long do they stay in memory? How many pages did you test with?

This is seriously exciting, since the crappy refresh made Safari not as useful. (I wanted to load up on pages when I had WiFi, and then refer to them when I was away from home...but the cache never kept them around.)

I've currently got 5 pages open. I left Safari and did some other things (watched a video, played some music, used YouTube, read e-mail) and when I came back all five windows were still loaded and switching between them did not cause a reload on any of them.

Edit: Hmm.. read my next post.

That is *awesome*. I always kinda hated that. Also used to happen when you left the web browser app for a long time and went back to it. I guess now it'll just cache those pages in memory then? Wonder if there's anything else hidden in here a la the "send to web gallery" button that magically opened last August.

Actually, I just watched another YouTube video and this time when I went back in only the current web page was still loaded. The other four had turned white and reloaded when I switched to them. I guess downloading the Youtube video did something. :/

They've probably allocated a set amount of memory for the cache and cleared it out when you downloaded the YouTube video. Very cool that we're getting at least some caching on the browser though, as I was generally annoyed with it having to re-load as well.

This is exciting for using sites like meebo for AIM, since the page would reload and mess up your online session (iPod Touch user with no edge D: )

Nice! That's actually a really meaningful addition, I'll upgrade when I charge my phone later tonight. Looking forward to the SDK too!

A question to those 1.1.3 phones and Jailbroken is it possible to totally disable the EDGE network? Or do you need another App for this?

I just want to ensure once I get my iphone I'm not going to pay extra for data charges.

Or is adding extra characters or typing nonsense in the username/password under the EDGE options enough to not get connected?

I installed Services.app, which allows you to turn off EDGE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc, but it turns back on by itself every time the phone comes out of sleep, so I'm also looking for a working solution for this on 1.1.3.

Where do you live that you get charged extra for EDGE data? All the plans here in the States are all you can eat data plans. There is an option to turn off data roaming, and it's set to off by default.

Type nonsense for the EDGE username/password, or leave it blank. You will have phonecalls but be unable to access GPRS/Edge, so no data charges. To check turn Wi-Fi off, then try and access Google or something in Safari, if it comes up with "You are not subscribed to Edge" then you have no data charges to worry about.

Only important obviously if you are using an unlocked iPhone on another network without an unlimited data plan.

Rogers here Canada

Some people's bills come up to +$200 without them realizing it (just using edge alone)

No. At least not yet. And at EDGE speeds, I'm not sure you'd want to.

Wow! That completely sucks. I'm assuming the plans have some data included, but users are blowing through their allotment?

What this guy said. I use it to shut off SSH but its a skethcy program at best.

Also this was just posted on engadget

supposedly apple is going to reveal its plan for SDK on march 6th, the bothersome part is the picture they released along side the announcement. the use of "enterprise" sounds like they might see this as some sort of new revenue stream, ala XNA. Who really knows but Im excited for all the official apps that will be released.

Actually, to me, the use of "Enterprise" doesn't make me think of a new revenue stream at all, although I'm not discounting that theory. To me, it shows they're working towards making the iPhone a better solution for the Enterprise Market, which is dominated by Blackberries at the moment. I'm willing to bet it's more along the lines of integrated Exchange support and perhaps the release of the long rumored Lotus Notes client that was suppose to come out a few weeks back, then was quickly removed from the docket at LotusSphere.

Excellent...........I would revert back to official FW for that.

I hope they found a way to optimize the power usage of the Mail client, so that maybe it can act as a blackberry - with a dedicated connection to your mail server to give you automatic updates. That would be an awesome feature, but I don't know if the battery could support it. Enterprise features sounds really encouraging though, I'm definitely excited for the 6th.

Well, clearly Push e-mail does work, as it's supported from a Yahoo account. I don't use it, but it is a possibility. I always thought it was meant to be a perk for those using Yahoo on the iPhone. I'd imagine that it could work just fine for other e-mail as well.

And from what I was reading back in January, the Lotos Notes support sounds like it's amazing. Full access to everything on the Notes Server just like on your desktop machine. At the time it seemed like the announcement was imminent at LotusSphere and then it just disappeared. Rumbling were that Apple asked them to hold off until after the SDK was trotted out.

Huh, I didn't know yahoo had push email. Yeah the Lotos Notes support should be sweet though.

If by "Lotus Notes support" you mean "upload a virus that will eradicate every copy of Lotus Notes ever created," then yeah, I totally agree with you.

(Shittiest program EVER.)

Sounds like we shouldn't expect too much from the March 6th event.

Final SDK isn't expected till the WWDC in June now, with March 6th just being the release of a barebones beta of the SDK for developers. Rather than just the select-few who've had it till now.

As it's termed beta, I wouldn't expect anything to be available through iTunes until the final release in June. As the invite graphic suggested, the event looks like being more of a roadmap thing than anything else. I'm not expecting any new apps yet, either Apple or 3rd party.

For people having problems with the Services app on 1.1.3, I think I remember installing a fix for that when I upgraded.

It should be in the Tweaks (1.1.3) section of Installer.

I dearly love my iPhone but the device has a LONG way to go to even make a squeak in the Enterprise. Simply adding live folder views to an Exchange server will not cut it. My Blackberry 8830 is such a superior work device it's not even funny.

Custom apps too? Not just email/calendaring?

Still a small chance they might surprise us with an app or 2, but I personally doubt it until everything is in place. There's too much emphasis on roadmap this and roadmap that. It's still a work in progress.

The SDK is building up to a big blow-out on iPhone 2.0 at Apple's WWDC in June in my opinion. An effective relaunch of the phone to keep it ahead of the competition in the public's eye. The March 6th thing is to really kickstart the development side of things, so by June they can trump 100+ apps available TODAY or something.

I'd expect the whole iPhone 2.0 strategy to include the 3G version of the phone as well. So a big iPhone explosion of information, apps and product in June, not so much before.

I used to work for IBM (who owns the Lotus suite now), and they made us use Notes. I must agree, what a horrible program :(

FFS, they mapped F5 to close your window!

The rumors about the SDK are getting worse and worse:

http://www.macrumors.com/2008/02/29/iphone-sdk-details-emerging/

iLounge cites several sources "familiar with Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch software development kit (SDK) plans" to reveal some controversial new details:

• iTunes Store as hub - as expected, Apple will require future iPhone and iPod Touch applications to be distributed through Apple's iTunes Store.
• Apple as Application Gatekeeper - iLounge believes that Apple will act as a gatekeeper for the applications themselves and will formally approve or deny all software releases: While one source saw this as a positive for major developers, suggesting that Apple will be choked by application submissions and forced to give priority to releases from larger companies, another source disagreed, stating that Apple’s current approval processes for third-party products have resulted in lengthy, needless delays.
• No Accessory Support - no ability to support dock-based accessories (such as a GPS module), though the iPhone's own phone, Wi-Fi, and camera will reportedly accessible.

If Apple really is planning to be sole gatekeeper and approver of apps, then I'm going to jailbreak instead. I doubt Apple would approve the kinds of cool apps I want like GBA emulators, multi-protocol IM clients or GPS apps. Still, this is just a rumor right now.

Here's how I think Apple should have the SDK work. It's a far better solution for everyone.

Does anyone know a way to look at the normal, non-mobile MSNBC.com? I don't think you can.

PS Oops, sorry, mjfor40. I just realized you were talking to me on the last page. Hopefully you figured it out.

I'm ok with Apple being the Gatekeeper. It would likely keep the quality of the apps at a much higher level and insure stability and security on the iPhone, which they've maintained all along was their primary concern. The only problem is how long it'll take to certify the apps as is mentioned in that post. Look how long it took Microsoft to get up to speed with XBLA. Apple could be faced with something similar.

But everything else in that iLounge "rumor" is pretty much spot on with what has been expected all along.

Yeah while the reasons for Apple doing it this way are obvious, it's not what I personally want from the platform. I want it to have the richness, diversity and freedom of content of the existing Mac development community. As well as emulators, a Skype app will obviously be KO'd by Apple on AT&T's behalf and not granted a release officially.

Anyway, there's also a very high-probability that official apps (as with any other iTunes purchase) will still be able to be installed on jailbroken phones anyway. So Jailbreaking gives the best of both worlds. The stability and usefulness of high-profile apps through iTunes, and the much more dynamic and interesting hacker community.

A lot of the existing iPhone developers (the emulator side of things etc.) will just use the SDK (or knowledge gained from it) and release them through Installer.app

The key to sign official SDK apps is already known. Even if they change it, it will leak again.

Can anyone recommend a case for the iphone that isn't bulky. Also has anyone experienced issues with their iphones such as being backed out of safari for no reasaon, having music playback stop for no reason, and freezing?

That's typical behavior. My theory is that the iPhone shuts down the music if the processor gets too taxed while doing other things. Safari crashes can happen when the web page dounloading is too big. Just my thoughts. For what it's worth, it used to be worse.

Yeah, when it first launched, the crashing of apps and stuff was far worse. I actually don't remember the last time I had one crash though, and I've never had any issues with music. Are you running 1.1.4 firmware? At least 1.1.3?

Have you guys seen this video?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hy0ptZisr70

It's for a game called "Trism" that's coming out for the iPhone/iPod Touch that's sort of the next gen of Bejewled and it really shows the potential of gaming on the iPhone. It uses the phones accelerompeter to decide which direction the gems should slide. Very cool looking.

I guess it's going to be available for Jailbroken phones soon, and hopefully this is an indicator of some of the stuff we can expect out of the SDK as well. Awesome stuff.

Yeah I got the latest firmware today. It's been crashing a lot with 1.1.3
