I don't see why you would want to, but you could always just change the album names by putting letters or numbers in front of them to change the sort order. In other words

Before:
X Album
Y Album
Z Album

After
01 Z Album
02 Y Album
03 X Album

This shouldnt be too much of an off-topic question but I don't think its threadworthy so here goes.

First ipod touch update erased all my media and someone told me that happens every time you update.

This true? Any way to avoid this?

That's stupid. iPod sorting options have always been shit, and the iPhone is no different in that regard.

I like how you responded to me explaining why I wouldn't be getting it by saying 16 GB is okay for you.

And no, not everyone OBVIOUSLY will hate AT&T. It doesn't suck for everyone. But it's widely looked at as the worst of the big three. Verizon is probably the best in most people's opinions, but I use and enjoy T-Mobile.

I can respect that 16 GB may not be enough for you, but to say that it "sucks" is kind of off base. Yes, it's far less than you can get in an HDD based media player like the iPod Classic, but this is a completely different device. My examples were simply a way to show you what can be done with the space that is available. Which is to say, you can get quite a bit of content on the phone. Regardless, 32MB version will probably be out this Summer when, if the rumors are correct, a 3G version will drop as well.

As for the quality of AT&T vs. the other networks, all I can say is that I've now used Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile, which technically isn't one of the "Big Three". Sprint is still larger. But of the three that I've used, T-Mobile was by far the worst provider. In fact, it wasn't even close. And this comes from someone who travels regularly, and has lived in two very different regions of the country over the past few years. Verizon was probably the best, but as I said earlier, I've noticed no real difference when it comes to AT&T.

But again, if you want an iPhone, it can be fairly easily unlocked and used on T-Mobile. I have a friend who has done it and is quite happy with it. I know that he doesn't have Visual Voicemail, and I think YouTube doesn't work, but there are hacks to get it up and going, but otherwise, it works fine.

I have to ask though, why is it shit? My iPhone, and Coverflow in iTunes, sorts my albums alphabetically by artist. When I switch to the list modes I can sort by a variety of options in iTunes, and on the Phone list mode has everything listed by artist and then broken down by each album from that artists. Seems completely logical to me.

Honest question, how else would you guys like to see them sorted?

There's a feature in iTunes for this. There are fields in the meta-data called "Sort Album", "Sort Artist" etc. that indicate alternative strings to sort by, but not to display.
I've been meaning to use this to get it to show albums in chronological rather than lexicographical order, but haven't got around to it yet.

I'd like to have the iPhone's coverflow mode be a choice between either artists or album. Currently it is artist only. When I listen to music, I tend to listen by album so I use the album list under the "More..." tab a lot. If there were an option to have coverflow be an album list, that would be more useful to me.

As it is, I have the same albums showing up in cover flow over and over since I have a lot of compilation albums.

I had the same issue with Coverflow showing the albums over and over as well and it annoyed the hell out of me until I went in and edited the tag for "Album Artist" to be the same for each of the tracks on that individual album. After that, everything was good and all the tracks showed up under one album, not spread across several Coverflow items.

Good tip. I may do that.

I was a long time Sprint user and came over to ATT and haven't noticed a loss in service quality...
Ditto. For all the talk of how bad ATT is, I expected worse but haven't really noticed any difference in quality of service.

My only issue with ATT has been a bug where a call never completes and allows me to talk. I can hear myself echoing back only, while the other end hears me fine.

I just end up hanging up and calling back. I've heard this happens on other phones too.

The only thing I've ever used a clock radio for was to wake up. The clock part, I suppose.

Like I said what you want is coming. Just be patient.

That would be better described as an alarm clock not a clock radio.

Coverflow in iTunes can be sorted in multiple ways, not to mention narrowed down via the search bar. I would like to have the same options available to me on the iPhone/iPod Touch. The complete lack of a search feature on either, by the way, is pretty bone-headed.

"By artist" is a good default to have, but if I want Coverflow to display by album title, I think I should at least have the option.

I've had this problem on my S710A.

Hmm... this gave me the idea of combining all my albums by a particular artist into one album. You lose multiple cover arts, but my coverflow would be a lot easier to sift through.

It's relative. What makes sense to you may not work best for me. The issue I have is the lack of sorting options on the device itself.

Why is there no 'sort by date option? I like to have things sorted in the order in which they were added to the device. I should be able to do this on the phone, independent of PC software (iTunes).

Plus... Why is there no search feature on the iPhone? The fuck is up w/ that. It's on the older iPod videos.

I could totally see Apple doing this, albeit in a manner befitting them. If they ever did, I'd put money down that it take the form of a "Recently added to iPod" smart playlist.

I can see why someone would want a search feature. But a search by date would probably be for the album date, which doesn't seem like a great way to search for me, and I don't even have that field populated for a lot of my stuff. Adding a "Recently Added" option would seem more likely or something.

Seeing things sorted by the date they were added to the device sounds completely foreign to me. Not saying it doesn't work for you, but I'd never even consider that. In my case, the first thing I always thing about, no matter the device, is artist and then album. Seems the most natural, although having some kind of search for a specific song or something would be handy.

I have an 8GB iPhone. Looking at iTunes now... 2.62GB of music. I hand picked each song, and continue to do so as new material comes out. Therefore 'sort by date added' or something similar would be a godsend for me. Not sure why that's so foreign to you in concept. That album/artist mess is ideal for perfectly tagged collections. Which mine isn't, nor will it ever be. Apple shouldn't assume as much as most, if not all iPod owners have incorrect tags here and there...

Hence me wanting these additions.

My library isn't tagged to perfection either, but it's in pretty great shape. The concept is foreign to me because I've never once thought that that would be an optimal way to search for me. Like I said, it's never once been an option that I've even thought about. On my pervious MP3 players, and my two iPods and iPhone, it's always search by album and/or artist. Just the way my mind thinks when thinking about my music.

I'm not saying your approach is wrong, just saying it's not something I've ever once though about. Everyone approaches search differently, and more options would certainly be good.

Really? I thought the edge access was new along with the Mac OSX requirement.

I've definitely heard EDGE mentioned before, at least.

I'm preparing for dissapointment tommorrow. Nothing short of an app I can install when I get home will be good enough.

If we were to have any apps to download tomorrow it'd have to be accompanied by a new version of iTunes to allow for it (I'm assuming). It'd actually be pretty smart for Apple to start with a few of its own apps and some apps from trusted partners as a sort of proof-of-concept that others could use as a jumping-off point. I'm not thinking very many -- maybe, like, 4 (one full row of the iPhone UI): iChat (example of an Apple app), Flickr upload (Apple is chummy with them now apparently, see Flickr gallery support in Apple TV Take 2), MySpace app (new partnership?) and Fandango app (Apple touted that Movie Tickets widget in Leopard pretty hard at one point and I believe that is tied to Fandango).

Plus, if Apple and those trusted partners put together some of the more requested-style apps for the iPhone those would eliminate the need for smaller devs to make those. (And maybe concentrate on games or other lifestyle apps.)

What's the latest firmware again, the one that was bug fixes? Would be awesome if it had some kind of hidden feature. Remember last August when Apple announced the "send to web gallery feature" and it was suddenly available on the phone without a software update? Bingo.

Either way tomorrow is way more for devs than consumers. Though if Apple's smart they will have something to show off to the press and consumers at the same time. They've been doing iPod Games for a long time and it really is a shame that the iPhone/Touch have been left out of that party.

An official Adium client for the iPhone/Touch OS would be sublime.

If you're running 1.1.4 you're running the version based on the latest headers for the SDK, or so I have been told :) There is still some question about signing applications for non-iTunes release. Apple has wavered a couple of times on how they wanted to answer that. There are actually people working on apps right now in the 3rd party community who are under NDA.

I'll be surprised if we see any Apps today, but it would be really really nice to have an indication of what we can expect down the line. Plus, considering how they're hyping up the "Enterprise" options for this event, I wouldn't be surprised at all if some of the stuff that will be available will lean in that direction, although Apple should still throw a bone to the consumer market too.

Jeez, I hope they at least throw us a bone. Give us one app just to hold us over.... It'd be even better if we could get a tiny trickle of apps until the flood gates open. Is that too hard to ask for? :D 1 app a month.

Rumors and other recent reports would suggest we might at least see some fruits of the SDK today, even if it's geared more towards enterprise. IBM, Maybe Google? Google's got Gears running on Windows Mobile now, wouldn't be surprised if they've been working on that for iPhone as well.

The graphic on the invite for the event has three things -- Enterprise, iPhone SDK and "Software Update." So, if we aren't actually gonna be able to USE some new apps today, they're probably going to preview some things coming soon.

C'mon iChat for the iPhone. I think that's the only app I want/need that I don't have (though I use BeeJive when I have to).

Oh, and I'd like to make iPhone's Mail filter junk mail with the same rules OSX's Mail.app uses. 'Cuz I get a decent amount of spam per day and it all goes to my iPhone unfiltered.

The BBC Player rumor has been out there for awhile, and considering their player doesn't work on the Mac yet, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'd appreciate it on either platform actually.

I'm trying hard not to get too excited about this event in the case it turns out to be a big let-down. None the less, I can't wait to find out what's revealed!

I never was too excited. All I need from my iPhone are more/better games.

Not sure it's fair to call it a rumor when if you browse to the site on the iPhone, you see the badge that's in the screenshot.

Something's cooking.

Well, that element is new then, because it had been a rumor for several weeks. Perhaps they've been waiting on the SDK like the rest of us.

Looks like Gizmodo's faster on the updates/pictures than Engadget for this one. Looks like Apple's already taken a nice chunk of the smartphone market (28%) and the mobile browser space (71%). Awesome.

Engadget actually seems to have more content for me.

Push e-mail coming for Enterprise.

Actually push everything. Calendar, contacts, etc. Coming in the next software update.

Active Sync licensed as well. Exchange support in!

Very nice. Would be great to be able to check my work email on my iPhone. I mean aside from doing it in Safari via webmail.
