Did you get the 8gb or the 16gb?

I'm hoping that June might also see another hardware revision, maybe 32gb? And maybe even 3G? Dare we dream?

They've got a 32GB Touch so why the hell not? I'd definitely buy another iPhone and replace my 8GB for 3G and 32GB.

You are practically guaranteed new iPhone hardware as well as the big software update in June.

Whether it releases straight away is another thing, but expect 3G iPhone at the WWDC in June, along with hundreds of apps, and whatever other surprises they decide to build in to the iPhone 2.0 hardware (GPS, video conferencing, 3G modem support etc.)

The WWDC is effectively a relaunch for the iPhone, and the hype starting all over again.

The two apps I really want Adium and NetNewsWire (RSS).

Everything else would just be icing on the cake.

News Gator already rocks and even has a mobile version with a custom iPhone icon. I use it all the time syncing with Net News Wire.

:lol :lol :lol

I'm sorry, but right now, jailbreaking an iPod or and iPhone just takes 1 click. Literally. The hacking scene its in an all time high.

FUUUUCK the iPhone is so awesome.

The only thing that concerns me about the Apple approval process is that game system emulators may not be allowed. Apple might consider those illegal. Every other app I could want should be fine.

Event should have gotten it's own thread. Exceeded expectations. June isn't so long to wait for all this and you could always beta test the firmware via the SDK download, right?

Yeah, it really is the ultimate gadget.

A beautifully designed device in every respect, it can only go from strength to strength. Compared to the first version of the iPod, it's already an amazingly refined device.

Anyone have any experience with the Apple Store?

Went and bought one off of the Apple Store online. How long will it take to get to me? They say 5 days but that seems like a long time.

And that's why Installer.app and Cydia will continue. As soon as the 2.0 update is jailbroken, we'll witness some impressive stuff regarding non-iTunes Store apps.

Purchased several things, and five days seems about right. It's coming from China right? I think my MacBook came a day early though.

awesome news from the sdk but one thing still isnt clear - are ipod users going to "pay" again?

Yes, it is clear. And yes, they'll be paying again. Not sure how much yet.

Emulators you will almost certainly have to go the Jailbreaking route for.

Even if they allowed the emulators onto the iTunes store (unlikely), you would need FTP access to the filesystem to install the roms etc.

It shouldn't be a problem though, iTunes doesn't know the difference between a normal iPhone and one that's Jailbroken. So you'd be able to install apps by either method. We should be seeing the first SDK apps running on people's phones before June anyway ... ;)

Question, I'm guessing the answer is no, but as an AT&T customer would I get any kind of discount on an iPhone when I'm available for upgrade?

I'm itching to get one but my next upgrade isn't until June... If it doesn't affect my upgrade status I might get one earlier, although the prospect of a 32GB one is tempting... I don't know enough about 3G to know if I need to care about it.

3G isn't a deal-breaker like it is with other phones, because the iPhone's Wi-Fi and browser are so damn good. And it's very efficient with how it downloads stuff.

Having said that though, if you are going to be waiting until June anyway, I'd definitely wait to see when exactly the 3G one will be out. You'll know at WWDC. 3G will future-proof you, and you will have a much more seamless transition when browsing in areas with no Wi-Fi coverage.

3G is A LOT faster than EDGE, plus they'll no doubt be a load of streaming video services announced as part of the whole iPhone 2.0 thing. Probably linking up with YouTube Live etc. Stuff like that will not work over EDGE. I'd also expect modem support as part of 2.0. So you could use your 3G iPhone as a wireless practically broadband modem for your laptop when on the road.

There's no discounts for the iPhone I believe.

I would wait til June if I were you just to see if Apple will release a 3g one. 3g allows for higher transmission speeds of data. To compare, I get about 20KB/s with 200-300ms latency using EDGE and I get about 80-100KB/sec using 3G with about 100ms in latency. It makes a huge difference when I tether on my laptop (using another phone, not the iPhone).

I could probably get more than 80-100KB/sec as I'm restricted via bluetooth tethering. If I had a USB cable it'd probably go even faster.

what...if its above 5-10 USD iam not in - stupid apple is stupid

Not sure what the deal is with charging for "accounting purposes" but they mentioned it again at this event, and have done it in the past as well. I doubt it'll be more than $5 or $10 really as it's not as substantial as paying for the new apps they released. I'd guess a few bucks, but we'll have to wait to see. Steve noted in the Q&A session that it wasn't meant to be a revenue stream, and considering how much cool stuff it can open up for you, a few bucks really isn't a big deal.

All right. I guess I'll continue to tough it out until then. June is going to be an expensive month for me, PS3 and iPhone, yikes. Not too mention my GFs birthday...

We're in the same boat, I'm 2/3 though. G/F's b-day is 2 weeks.

What the fuck is a "nominal charge," Apple?

They did not use "nominal" when describing the $20 January Software Update. I have a feeling these are going to get expensive for Touch users.

Pretty rosy predictions. Even if only 3G and 32gb come true, I'm in. Those are the two crucial things they need to get right.

Jesus fuck. I think there can now be a consensus that this is the greatest gadget of all time, and the functionality will fly through the roof once the new firmware is released. This will become the defacto mobile device.

at&T already has 3G coverage in some cities. theyre seperate networks

3G won't ever be possible though on existing iPhone? Or is possible to get it through a software update.

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

No, it needs a new chipset.

The software side of 2.0, which has been demoed today, that will be rolled out to all existing iPhones. But 3G access, and any apps/services that require it, will be limited to the second generation of hardware.

So we ain't gettin nuttin till June? Damn you Apple!

Can't say the wait bothers me. Starting the store before the apps are ready would be like putting the cart before the horse. And the last thing we need are developers falling over each other with rush-released, buggy commercial apps.

This puts the iPhone on the level of a Windows Mobile device in terms of Exchange support. Very nice.

I also loved how Schiller spun the Blackberry Enterprise Server as bad thing. :lol

Me either but then again I also don't see why they charged $20 for the fucking January update.

This has been covered many times...

Because people who have an iPhone pay Apple every month.

It actually has to do with how Apple accounts for earnings for the device.

I agree. As much as I'd like the store to launch today, I'd rather have good quality and variety available when it does finally launch.

And I have to admit, while I expected some good stuff to come from the SDK, I was completely blown way by what was shown today. And this is just the beginning. We're going to get some really great stuff in a short period of time.

The iPhone is going to be far better at games than I would have expected as well. It's the device that just keeps on giving. June can't get here fast enough.

Doesn't work for me for some reason.

Hmm sorry, looks like they might have pulled the page. I am watching it right now, try this (paste url into QT Player, File > Open URL):

If that doesn't work I dunno... I'm sure they will put the page back up soon though. Right now they probably need the bandwidth for their developer site.. And just to prove I am not BSing, here is a pic:

Oh well maybe they will put it up again.
