Do you have to sign up for the contract if you do that? Can you give me more info on this? Thanks
i've heard both yes and no. i'd love to get a confirmation on this too. $250 for the refurb phone to use on tmobile is perfect for me. i'm sold.

Well i just did a little bit more research on this, and you can just order the phone from att unactivated, so i guess it works because you could just unlock it than. If anyone else knows more, please let us know :)

i'm looking into buying a refurbished iphone and there are a lot on ebay (some for ~$300 which aint bad).

all of them are stating that they are "brand new" (in other words not used) except for unlocking the phone for the winning bidder. is this shady? do i need to be careful with these auctions? dont want to get scammed or screwed over....

I'm really torn on this refurbished iPhone thing. I could sell my Touch and get a refurbished iPhone for next to nothing.

But I just knoooooooooooow the next version will come out shortly after and I'll feel stupid I waited this long only to pull the trigger right when I should have waited just a little longer.

can anyone help with my ebay question above? i have no idea if i am being smart by avoiding these refurbished iphone auctions or have nothing to worry about....

Turns out I have a short in the headphone jack on the phone. They're offering to replace it, but it'll be 1.1.3 or above, thus preventing me from JB'ing the thing...which makes it useless IMO.

Decisions, decisions.

You can jailbreak 1.1.4. Ziphone.org

^Well, that settles it!

I just talked w/ the Apple dude and that was a pain. All these silly steps to try and troubleshoot it. Truly annoying... But ya got to do what ya got to do!

Is there any plan or rumor about a hardware update with a flash and/or an upgrade to the camera? That would be the kicker to drop my n95 in favor of an iPhone

there are always rumors, though none about a flash. current most popular rumor is the 3G phone, this Q3-ish, camera (maybe) facing you to video conference if you so wish, prolly not though. upgraded memory/screen (OLED is being rumored) are also included.

take this with a huge grain of salt, but i've heard approximately 0 rumors about a flash for the iphone.

(caveat: own an iphone, got it 2 weeks after initial release, jailbroke 1.0, 1.1.1, 1.1.3, and now 1.1.4 - gotta have my apps!)

OK forgive me as I've not read the whole thread yet (yet) but a couple things:

1) Is it me or is there no BT voice dialing?

2) Can I add pics to outgoing text msgs?

3) Can icons be changed for webpages or is that server based?

Overall I'm ridiculously impressed, espcially after whating the SDK/App Store video. :D :D

1. No.. you cant voice dial with BT

2. No.. you cant add pics to txt message, and when someone sends u a txt message, you have to go to a website to view them.

3. No.. unless you create your own... there was a method on how to do that, but I forgot how...

Only by the page host and naturally that means it appears the same on every iPhone that creates a link for it.

EDIT: Looks like new SDK build is out, Interface Builder included now.

Is GAF planning on adding the icon server side or?

I'm wondering why they are waiting wih the App Store so long. I dont want to jailbreak if I dont have to. Im sick of the PSP firmware carnival games so Im not looking forward to it here.

Bring it Apple! :D

For games, couldn't apple just release an analog stick or d-pad that clipped into the dock port? Then use the touchscreen for buttons on the other side (or have the clip-on run underneath the phone and add physical buttons to the other side, hell maybe even shoulder buttons). This would turn iPhone into a psp in less than minute, and you could take the attachment off whenever you wanted.

From someone who also gave up on the PSP stuff.... do it. Jailbreaking an iPhone is the easiest 'hack' ever. It takes all of sixty seconds and doesn't screw anything up. It's the only way to play iSolitaire!

Whelp, I totally smoked my iPhone last night. I just plugged it in to the wall charger and it got super hot. It buzzed twice (death rattle?) and then; dead. No response to anything.

Has anyone heard of this? I just explained it to the tech at the genius bar and he didn't even check it, just pulled out a new one and I was on my way.

No clue, but Rattle of Death sounds like an awesome new iconic way for a device to die.

If the phone got hot...probably a battery failure. An ugly battery failure. Enough so that I'd question if the phone would even be salvageable.

I purchased this awesome white case made by Agent 18 a couple of days ago. Absolutely love it. Would post pictures if I could.
I was looking at these a while back. What's the texture of the case? Plastic or rubbery?

If you guys want a really nice case and don't mind paying top dollar, I can highly recommend Vaja cases (www.vajacases.com or www.vajachoice.com). They range from about $30-$80 but also have a few around $100 and some crazy expensive ones adorned with crystals and silver and such for about $250-$300. I have the "Classic" dockable case and I love it to death. It has no screen protection (many of their other cases do but I don't want to cover my screen), but it is damn beautiful hand-stitched leather. They take about a month to show up after you order them because they are custom made and shipped from overseas. Here's a pic of mine:

That case is ugly man. To each his own I guess. I'm straight w/ my Agent 18 clear one.

I have the opaque plastic case, pictured a few pages back.

Any grip issues? I went caseless for a while with mine, but I had a little incident involving a four foot drop, concrete, and a cracked screen (up near the earpiece, doesn't affect functionality so I can live with it). So as soon as I send this in for repairs, I'll probably invest in something that will be a little more Cereal-proof, as I am fairly hard on electronics.

For that price ($80) you can get a water proof and impact resistant case. Function > Form ;)

There is no need for a case. Rawdog is the only way for me. I've got a couple of scratches on the back, but that adds character.

This thread is my argument for why iPhone jailbreaking/unlocking is just as confusing as PSP CFW: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=461873

I really just don't get it. Am I the only person on the Internet who just wants to find out if I can jailbreak my 1.1.4 phone and know it's 100% reversible with a restore? Is one's bootloader only replaced for activate/unlock, or does it need to be for a jailbreak too?

My chrome was already getting dinged. There is need for a case for my $500 phone. ;)

Mine looks fine and I've carried it this way since September when I bought it. To each his own.

If you Jailbreak your phone only, it's possible to get it back to the state it was in when you got it. The only difference is your baseband (the modem part of the phone) will be a newer version, and this cannot be downgraded legitimately.

If you jailbreak and UNLOCK your phone, changes may be made to your bootloader. What version is your bootloader ? (If you want to simply jailbreak, then no changes are ever made to your bootloader).

Generally speaking, it is almost always possible to restore a phone to a factory state. I got in a position where my phone had an empty baseband, couldn't be jailbroken, no wifi, just a "Repair Needed" error. Even in that state I managed to fix it.

If you want to unlock/jailbreak, get iLiberty:

mine only had a small ding on the back but i had too many close calls (the damn thing is slippery as hell) that i had to buy a case. The cases do make it lose some of its sleekness, but i picked up the Agent18 black case and its great so far. Doesn't make it overly bulky, and doesn't stretch like the Incase rubber cases.

Got my iPhone on Friday and jailbroke it today. I got custom ringtones on, but is there anyway to add custom text tones as well? Also what is the best IM app to get, plus any other must have apps would be appreciated.

Also, I love this phone. :)

You can, but you have to find out where they are (their location changed between 1.1.2 and 1.1.3), then back up one of the existing tones (I think they are AIF from memory) and replace it with one of your own. Google can help you more. Just be careful with the location, as if you find a page detailing how to do it, it could reference the old location, which you won't be able to find.

Has this been posted yet?

Complete custom firmwares for iPhone are here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=siuKQw6L6Rk

Demo of PWNAGE. It builds legitimate firmware files, adds the ability to jailbreak/unlock/etc., removes the need to sign apps to run on the new 1.2/2.0 firmware, lets you customise everything, and then you just install the firmware in the normal fashion through iTunes. Very impressive.

Will let the iPhone run pretty much anything.

TTOB, I posted a couple of pages back - http://audiko.net - I don't know if it'll have the ringtone you want (because it's all community created stuff) but if you have the source mp3 you want to convert, it's very easy to do so on that site.

My friend just showed me and app called ringtones. I just installed it and you can create ringtones and text tones straight from your mp3's on the phone. Works really well too.

Question, which IM chat program is the best to use? Looking online it seems like ApolloIM and Mobile Chat are 2 of the more popular ones. Any reason to go with one over the other?
