My friend just showed me and app called ringtones. I just installed it and you can create ringtones and text tones straight from your mp3's on the phone. Works really well too.

Question, which IM chat program is the best to use? Looking online it seems like ApolloIM and Mobile Chat are 2 of the more popular ones. Any reason to go with one over the other?

ApolloIM is very unstable, but supports all the services.

MobileChat2 works perfectly, but only does AIM/iChat.

Both need a little tweaking to get working on 1.1.3/1.1.4, but it's only a case of editing a text file and adding some servers.

Quick question - when jailbreaking to 1.1.4 from 1.1.3, is it really necessary to restore? Can I back up calendars, contacts, etc? It seems like a big pain to restore to go to 1.1.4. (Running an iPod Touch but I don't think it matters to much when it comes to jailbreaking)

There's not really anything to be gained from going to 1.1.4 if you are already 1.1.3. It was mainly very minor bug fixes, and more for the iPhone than anything else.

I'm skipping it with my iPhone and just waiting for 1.2/2.0. The PWNAGE video shows it will make the jump to that from either 1.1.3 or 1.1.4.

As for your question though, every time you sync your iPhone/Touch it backs up everything anyway. After you restore iTunes will ask if you want to return to the last back-up made, and put all your contacts, calendar etc. back.

Got my iPhone on Friday and jailbroke it today. I got custom ringtones on, but is there anyway to add custom text tones as well? Also what is the best IM app to get, plus any other must have apps would be appreciated.

Also, I love this phone. :)
What firmware are you on? If you are using 1.1.2 and above, just install customize.app, that will allow you to change system sounds. If you are using 1.1.3 and above add http://ipodtouched.net/repo.xml to your installer sources and install customize 1.1.3.

Just to warn fellow GAFers. I'm developing some apps for the iPhone and I have had to put the new firmware on my phone. DO NOT do this unless you're a developer testing applications because it will make your phone unstable as shit. Locks, hangs, and all sorts of weirdness are now the norm on the device - but I had OpenGL ES apps to test so I had no choice.

Anyways, DO NOT install the beta firmwares unless you are a developer.

You have been warned!

Yeah 1.2 is meant to be a mess at the moment.

Even the hacker community decided not to release it :)

The latest available is actually labelled as firmware 2.0. Its a more unstable build beyond the already unstable 1.2. Sadly the baseband update it does to your phone gives you no opportunity to revert back to 1.1.4 or similar. So once you go this road you have to endure for a while.

Really? Blimey. Just as well they chose June!

Does make you appreciate though how well the developers of Installer.app and stuff had done without any insider knowledge.

I'm on 1.1.4, and I already installed customize and it works like half of the time. I installed the fix but it still seems like it's not working properly.

Which version of customize do you have installed?

Oh yeah, is there a way to change your Text message and New Mail sound files without Jailbreaking your phone?

I tried googling, and old methods do not work. :(
Unfortunately, there is not.

Where do I find this? I don't see any reference of it via 'installer'.

As a quick note to anyone who would like to keep any of the things that iTunes DOESN'T restore, however, that can be done too. For example, your SMS history. If you access your iPhone using SSH or any of the apps that let you dig around in the folders, just go Root's Home/Library/SMS/sms.db and save sms.db on your desktop, then put it back in th same place after you restore, update, jailbreak, etc. Or Root's Home/Library/notes/notes.db to back up your notes, etc. There are a variety of folders within Root's Home/Library that you can do this with.

You have to use one of the variety of apps available on a jailbroken to access your iPhone this way. The Username is "root", the password is "alpine".

iTunes does back up your SMS history as well, but that's nice to know where to find it to make a manual backup if required.

I need a new phone and was considering picking up an Iphone. Should i wait a few months and see if Apple releases a new model come June? Doesn't Apple usually release new stuff in June? Or did I misread that somewhere.

thanks

There are rumors of a June refresh, but that's all they are at this point is rumors. There haven't been any reliable indicators yet that we'll see anything for sure.

And no, Apple doesn't really have a set time when they release new stuff, especially when it comes to the iPhone. That said, June is when they hold the WWDC, which often sees new products, and it'll also be the one year anniversary of the iPhone.

MacRumors or some other Apple site (I don't remember) just updated their iPhone purchase chart thing to "Don't buy - update imminent" so I'm waiting.

I just switched my phone from att to i-wireless (unlimited everything for $75/mo) and whenever I turn the phone off i get msg saying "different sim detected". I unlocked my phone with ziphone and i'm on 1.1.4.

Is there anyway to fix this? It's a small annoyance but itd be cool if i didnt have to worry about.

Also to anyone whose seen the SDK, is there any possibility of making a 3rd party visual voicemail app for us jailbreakers?

Thanks!

Considering that a lot of the visual voicemail stuff is handled server side, i wouldn't hold my breath for it to come to a different carrier.

I didn't know that! Thanks a lot :D

Only reason I would like to upgrade to 1.1.4 is that it saves all my tabs in Safari, so if on Meebo, I can switch to another page without having Meebo reload.

do at&t stores sell to canadians? If i go to the store, do they ask for id that proves i like in the US?

From what I read, they probably won't let you buy one if you don't want to activate it in store. However, you can buy the phone at any Apple Store and pretend you'll just activate it online later (they only ask for any US ZIP code).

Yeah, sit tight. They restock pretty frequently.

IIRC, I had to wait two weeks to order mine.

Links to noobs guide to Jailbreaking w/ Mac plz. THX

I'm having another problem now. When I connect my phone to itunes it says my sim isn't supported.....anyone have any thoughts. I'm thinking about restoring, unlocking and jailbreaking again to see if that fixes it.

That ringtones app is something I really want, but I get 'download package failed' each and every time. Same thing when I try and update swirlyMMS. That said, I'm on 1.1.2. The only other time I've seen that message, it was slightly different in that it said 'download package failed, server not found'. That makes sense as it can't find the server and the shit happens immediately. With this new error, it downloads the entire thing, then gives me the message. Very annoying.

Anyway, I think I may just go ahead and update to 1.1.3 or 4, but I want the easiest, most painless way to do so. There seems to be a number of options and it's a bit overwhelming at this point.

Can someone hold my hand through this? Please?

When I upgraded my jailbroken 1.1.2 to 1.1.4, I just used iTunes to restore the phone to factory settings and upgraded that way. Once iTunes installed the new firmware, I reactivated and loaded my contacts, calendar, etc. Then just used ziphone to jailbreak again. There may be better ways, but I had no issues with this one.

aren't they backordered by like thousands of refurbed iphones? i dont think this deal is coming back anytime soon.

Right.

I, who have seen the deal come and go, and waited to purchase my refurb model - or you who are just taking shots in the dark.

Apple constantly offers refurbs every couple of weeks.

Sit down.

STFU.

Check the Apple store in a few weeks.

Your best bet is to do this, and either use http://www.ziphone.org/ or http://ipluspwns.com/?q=node/149 they are both one button jailbreak solutions.

What if I want to customize the phone more than AT&T / Crapple permits? :\
Aside from jailbreaking what type of customizing do you want to do? how? You can always restore the phone to an unjailbroken state if you need to.

As mentioned earlier, I'd like to customize my system sounds. Really kind of silly that I cannot do that by default.

That ringtone app lets you do that w/ ringtones (obviously) and SMS alerts.

Oh okay. Yeah I am sure Apple and At&t don't want you to jailbreak, so it's not a big deal. Make sure you install customize, this allows you to change system sounds.
