This may be a stupid question, but I've never had AT&T as a provider. For anyone who works for a company that offers discounts on plans with AT&T, when you sign up with AT&T in the store are they able to give you the discount or is this something that needs to be done through AT&T's website? I'm just wondering how they would verify that you do work for a company in the store. I know with Sprint I've done it through Sprint's website where I give them my work e-mail and they send me a special code in the e-mail. I heard some providers are able to do it in the store though, just wondering if AT&T is one of them.

Also anyone have a clue or read somewhere what the battery life is on the iPhone while using the GPS? I hope the damn thing doesn't run out of juice when running the GPS for an hour or so.

Yeah, they've really ballsed it up, if they did upgrade their servers for the rush today of orders, then they did a crap job, I'm inclined to think they didn't, my friend here at work is still trying to get his upgrade completed, he got halfway about 8am and has been trying since to finish it off.

I can see some smug marketing/sales person deciding they'll hold the PAYG phones till christmas to make more people decide to go to contract.

Argh, from the forums:

I have some news but its not what you will want to hear sorry!

After the emails I sent yesterday to key people in O2, we have now received official notification at Customer Services that the Pay & Go iPhone launch will be delayed until before Christmas (please don’t shoot the messenger!). This is due to the demand for iPhone being phenomenal since Steve Jobs stood up and announced it and as the demand has continued to increase, O2 felt it is best to phase the launch of iPhone.

Further news, as its in.

O2 felt it is best to phase the launch of iPhone, so that they could get more people on contracts as they're dicks.

Demo units and launch plans

Apple held their retail meeting last night, and details have been slow to trickle out. We've heard that more details will be available throughout the week but several employees seem to believe that they will open at 8am to mirror AT&T's launch time. (Apple apparently did not dictate an exact time so it may be left up to the discretion of the individual Apple stores.) As expected, iPhones will be activated in-store and must be paid for by check, credit card or gift card. Cash may be used to purchase gift cards, however, which in turn could be used to buy the iPhone. Credit checks, of course, will be performed at time of sale. A few of these details are also corroborated at Macenstein.

Just a few more days!

Just break it. I'm breaking mine with Helio. I'm switching to a family plan which will save me about $20 a month overall, so I'll have saved enough to pay for the early termination in 9 months.

I just may do that, but it'll cost me a couple hundred.

i know with all the 3g love going on right now that iam a bit "off course" but i just bought a iphone 2g for "cheap" (at least here in europe) because i didnt want to switch my phone company.

Anyway i have some questions, iam a "long time" ipod touch user so i know the most things already i guess ( ;) ). But yeha lets go:

1. to jailbreak / unlock the iphone is the best application (for mac) still ziphone (like it is when jailbreaking a ipod touch)

2. do you guys think there will be a 2.0 jailbreak on friday already?

3. whats the best case on the market ? (i kinda like the contour showcase http://www.contourcase.com/showcase/)

4. is every add in the appstore going to cost money or are they releasing some for free too ?

Probably not, but you never know. I wouldn't count on it.

3. whats the best case on the market ? (i kinda like the contour showcase http://www.contourcase.com/showcase/)

Just IMO, but the case kinda ruins the aesthetics of the phone. Besides, you don't need it. My iPhone's a year old, it's been in my pocket with no case and it only has mild scuffs on the back (and no scratches on the screen).

4. is every add in the appstore going to cost money or are they releasing some for free too ?

No, there will be both free and pay applications.

No dust in your phone? My mobile and work phones are filled with dust after 2 years in my pockets, I don't use them much, I would be using the Iphone more.

What do you mean "filled with dust"? There's really nowhere outside of the headphone jack or the dock connector for dust to collect on the iPhone.

Most phones typically collect dust (or lint, usually the latter even if it doesn't look it) in the spots where the LCD (rather, the plastic material covering the LCD) touches the phone casing. This is especially common around openings in candybar phones for the phone speaker or digital camera.

I would worry about this with the iphone too, though maybe the shield on it is wide enough that it would take a lot of dust migration to travel over the screen?

Has there been any word on a tethering-to-notebook-via-Bluetooth app at all?

That's one thing I'm gonna miss moving from a WM phone. Not a deal breaker, but it would be a great success to get one.

I believe there was on that used SSH for iPhone 1, but I may be mistaken.

The iPhone's multitouch screen uses a non-pressure based method for detecting input. This allows the enclosure to be rigid unlike most stylus based touch screens which have to be flexible. Likewise, being completely rigid makes for a tight enclosure that prevents dust from getting under the screen.

My older flip phone had that problem, yeah. But the iPhone does not. Outside of a few small scuffs on the back, the phone is no different than the day I bought it.

You would laugh if you saw my phone, you can't see anything unless you enable the backlight its so bad, my camera battery is dead, I'll snap a pic if I remember when its charged.

Vodafone New Zealand just won the shittiest iPhone plan ever contest! Take that, Rogers of Canada. We make your plans look good!

I had wondered if Vodafone was going to do expensive phones or expensive plans. Turns out they decided to do both!

Bunch of new details have gone up on AppleInsider --

EasyPay to ease iPhone 3G transactions at Apple retail stores

Apple plans to rely heavily on its portable checkout devices to speed up the iPhone 3G checkout and activation process at its retail stores beginning this Friday, according to information coming out of the company's retail meetings. Other notes from the internal gatherings follow.

People familiar with this week's disclosures between Apple and its retail employees say the electronics maker has designed its in-store iPhone 3G checkout process so that only handheld EasyPay systems (pictured below) carried by staffers can process orders for the new phone.

As such, the only forms of accepted payment for an iPhone 3G will be credit cards, debit cards, or Apple gift cards. However, gift cards can still be purchased with cash or a check at the stores' front POS (iMac) systems.

The EasyPay handhelds will also process every part of the iPhone 3G transaction ahead of activation, those same people say. This will include everything from a credit check (where applicable, see below), the customer's selection of a calling plan, and the actual purchase.

Some other notes from Apple's ongoing retail meetings:

Apple retail stores will not be able to help business customers who wish to move to iPhone 3G. Business customers are categorized as anyone who has a portion (or all of) their wireless bill paid for by their employer, or receives discounts on their mobile phone by working for their employer.

If you're not an existing AT&T customer, you'll be required to provide an Apple sales representative with your social security number so that they can perform a quick credit check.

All iPhone 3G shoppers will need to present a valid government issued United States ID (such as a drivers license) at the time of purchase.

Customers subscribing to a new AT&T FamilyTalk plan will need to purchase at least two iPhone 3Gs with the plan, unless a first-generation iPhone is already owned by one of the family members that will be using the plan. In that case, the new phone is sold and activated and the old iPhone is ported over to the new plan.

Some retail store employees say staffers may also "personalize" iPhone 3Gs by setting up an email account for customers at the point of sale.

Apple retail employees may not be able to determine whether existing non-iPhone AT&T customers are eligible for upgrade pricing. As such, it's unclear how iPhone 3G sales to non-iPhone AT&T customers will be possible at Apple retail stores. Additional information will be published when it becomes available.

Porting non-AT&T mobile numbers over to iPhone 3G on new AT&T accounts may take as long as 4 to 6 hours to complete. During this time, outgoing calls can still be made.

Apple retail employees were not informed during the meetings whether Apple stores would be opening early at 8:00 am alongside AT&T stores.

Apple retail managers were expected to receive more details regarding launch day procedures during a conference call sometime Monday (today).

Apple is expected to issue a press release with additional details as early as Tuesday.

In the meantime, Apple has provided customers with a support document which describes how to replace an original iPhone with an iPhone 3G.

Once payment for an iPhone 3G has been processed, Apple staffers will activate (unbrick) the phone by tethering it to a modified iTunes application. The activation process on the modified iTunes app will mirror the first few steps of the original iPhone home activation process, and employees (at least at AT&T) are being told not to progress beyond the "Set Up Your iPhone" screen, as can be seen in the below AT&T training screenshot.

BTW I've run into a situations a few times at Apple Stores where those portable checkout units were completely friggin' janked or taking forever to work. So if they're relying on those for a lot of the stuff on Friday let's hope they've got non-bugged-out units. Oy.

They are making you activate the phone in the store to help curb resellers and the blackmarket. It's going to be a huge mess.

Actually I appreciate the steps they're taking to curb reselling. I think this stuff is absolutely necessary at least at launch otherwise the line would be like it was for PS3...where the majority of people lined up planned to scalp. It's going to take a little longer to get through everyone, yes, but it's a small price to pay (IMO) for not having to worry about competing for a phone with some guy and his six friends who line up 3 days before launch just so they can turn around and eBay it.

However I think there is potential for it to go wrong. What if AT&T's system goes down like it did last year for some people and they can't activate those phones?

SuperPac said:

Ahh, so, just like I expected. This will end in complete chaos. They don't even have a way to figure out if you're upgrade-eligible in store.

They should focus on what they're good at and keep the account setup to a minimum. Just make them sign a statement and do a pre-auth of the $400 extra dollars for a no-contract phone on their credit card that they'll release as soon as it's activated from home.

In preparation for Friday, I need to get all of my contacts off of my current T-Mobile RAZR (V3). Is there a simple free program that will transfer the contacts to my PC? I know of Motorola Phone Tools, but I'd rather not spend $35 for this.

Yeah we were told the prices on monday

It wont just be sold in Vodafone in NZ

MagnumMac stores will be carrying unlocked ones.

Still pretty funny that we could get 2 gen 1 phones imported to nz for less that 1 3G one.

I dont think anyone i know with a 1st gen will be in a hurry to upgrade here

Has there been any word yet on if existing AT&T customers will be able to simply add the $30 3G data plan to their account and keep their current voice and text plans? The original iPhone had an option to do that (just add $20 to your current voice plan) but they never advertised it...I'm hoping this is going to work the same way.

Okay. I have had cingular for about one month. (Verizon plan finished off and i either had to sign a new two year contract or switch then.) Now I want the IPhone, but want it for $199. Someone told me i could just sign a new two year contract and be eligible for the $199 price even though I'm a month in. True? They said it would just extend my contract by one month.

Nope. You'll have to spend $399.

I just don't want to have to deal with their portable registers. When I was buying my MBP, it crashed and I had to wait 20 minutes before we could find out if it charged my credit card or not. Add that in with at&T's registration server, the required credit card and credit check and picking it up opening night is going to suck.

Typically speaking those who are in a 2 year contract with AT&T become "upgrade eligible" after 12 months. That way every year you can get a new, subsidized phone, and they can extend your contract back to two years.

So if you just signed up for AT&T and took a cheap phone from them...you are likely screwed. That would be the worst possible decision.

I would just like anyone who is hoping this is true to know that it is not. I signed on with AT&T last July (12 months ago) and I am not eligible for upgrade until the end of March 2009. If you're a current AT&T customer and you want to know if you're upgrade eligible, you can login to your account online and check there.

Why would you have had to sign a new verizon contract? only if you had chosen to get a subsidized verizon phone. Don't let phone companies bully you. You are under no obligation to sign a new contracts after the completion of a previous one if you want to keep you same phone and plan.

Once your contract was over you should've been able to just go...month to month on the plan you're on. You don't have to sign a new contract unless you're changing plans or getting a different phone AFAIK.

About a month, or more than a month? Because you might be OK if it hasn't been a full month. But I'd get on the horn with AT&T and check. I believe I'd heard (though this may've been during that time when information wasn't locked down yet) that if you haven't been a customer for a full month yet you could switch. But you might be too late.

I do think AT&T has a 30 day trial/guarantee, so this should fall under that.

They do. If it's less than thirty days, he should be able to return the phone and only be out the activation fee.

What the fuck is wrong with my phone?

Every fucking application keeps crashing. Even the fucking notepad.

Sorry, I haven't kept up to date on this for a long time, so my terminology may be inaccurate or incorrect.

ZiPhone makes irreversible downgrades to the baseband bootloader in order to jailbreak and unlock newer off-the-shelf iPhones (firmware 1.1.4 preinstalled, if they're even still available). There's other programs based on ZiPhone or similar apps that flashes custum "fake blank" baseband bootloader to allow it to be restored to the original if required (for example set it back to original factory settings before sending to Apple for service).

As for iPhone 3G, you should probably wait until after it is released and see how the situation changes for firmware 2.0 for first-gen iPhones, and how iPhone 3G differs in terms of the jailbreak/unlocking process.

Flek said:

Ziphone and iLiberty+ are both ridiculously easy to use, but the latter doesn't do irreversible changes to your phone, so it's pretty easy to choose. I had no problem using iLiberty+ myself, too.

Steve jobs: 199 and 299 maximum all over the world!!
yea right!

its really crazy that they charge so much for this fucking phone!

I aint cheap or anything but I just hate paying OVERPRICES!

I wait until I can buy an unlocked one with not damn contract so I can use any damn phone company I want!

So who all's planning on picking up the 3G on Friday? Let's do a rundown of who's planning to pick up, what model and your plan of attack --

Myself: iPhone 3G 16GB black, dock connector. My plan is to mosey down to the Apple Store @ 8 a.m. Friday. If I can get the phone, cool. If not, I'll just enjoy the 2.0 software on my iPhone 2.5G. Not gonna wait for hours in a line prior to 8 a.m. though.

Crazymoogle said:
Pac, I need a desktop dock for my eventual iphone. Two of them, probably. Do such beasts exist?

Apple will be selling docks for the phone (shown here at the bottom of the page) separately. I'm not sure about third-party docks or whether or not the 3G will fit in some of the speaker systems that're out.
