When you jailbreak, you MUST NOT choose to unlock the phone, otherwise, you'll fuck up the baseband and you won't get any signal.

Run the pwn app again and create a new custom IPSW WITHOUT the baseband unlock and it should all work again.

If you haven't worked it out yet, "Backup" stores all your user settings and data, but not the firmware itself. The firmware itself comes from the IPSW file.

And as I've said previously, I don't see a point of jailbreaking 3G at the moment. Unless you really really need a NES emulator :P

thanks, the tutorial didnt mention that if you had to uncheck 'activate phone. redoing it now :D

edit: thanks again.. it works now.. and yes its worth it just for nes. :D

Ok, I'm going to the Apple Store soon as it opens to get an iPhone. I am currently under my family's plan, and due to the times, I'm getting a whole new contract. Does the primary holder HAVE to be present (my Father) to port over my existing AT&T # (Cingular originally), or can I open up a new contract and then port over my number at a AT&T store later? Also since I work at a hospital, am I able to get additional discounts? Can't get straight answers anywhere. I just want to get in and get out with no hassles as I have errands to run for CTcon and work a few hours after the store opens. @_@

Can anybody confirm that the iPod touch can run the same apps that the iPhone does (obviously excluding those that require a phone connections)?

Also exclude apps that require the microphone. I mean they'll run, just not do much. :)

One thing that bugs me about the iPod interface is seeking. If you're trying to seek in a lengthy podcast, the granularity is somewhere around two minutes, and on top of that, it requires ninja-like motor skills.

Are there any super secret tricks for this?

i just did today, but i don't see any real advantages at all at the moment since there aren't really any apps written for 2.0

Yep, there's no real point to jailbreaking 3G yet, especially given that the 2.1 beta is now out to devs. Wait until 2.1 comes out at least or until more of the useful stuff get ported over to 2.0 and Cydia, I'd say.
There are a good amount of 2.0 apps and every single day things are added and updated.

It won't solve the problem, but it'll be easier to try seeking:

Grab the "playback ball" on the track line, then drag downward. Even if your finger is halfway down the screen, you can still track-left to right as long you keep holding. This way, you can easily see where the track is because your thumb isn't over it.

Thanks, that should help a little at least.

FANTASTIC TIP! Thanks a lot.

To anybody who's managed to buy an iPhone recently:

I'm told that an Apple store near me is going to have black 16GB iPhones in stock tomorrow morning at opening time. The store normally opens at 10:00 AM, but actually opens a little early to start processing iPhone customers around 8:00 AM. When should I show up if I want to get one of these things? Can I walk in around 9:00 AM? Should I camp out from 7:00 AM? Even earlier? Anybody have any idea about what the lines are like?

I would get there before 8am if you want the best chance. At my local Apple Store yesterday there were about 150 outside at 9am.

Some apps also require the iPhone's microphone and/or camera. So, obviously those apps won't work either but all others will.

I had three updates to apps today when I checked my phone. The update process worked great and went very smoothly. Nice to see the updates are coming out and improving things already.

I got a iPhone last week from the Apple Store. This was on Friday. They usually opened at 10, they opened at 9 for the iPhone. I got there at 8:30, absolutely no one in line. This may have been due to the fact it was in a mall and many probably didn't know the mall doors open early. Anyway, I left to do something, came back at 11:30 and there was a 9 person line. The phones came in at around 10:30-11:00AM. I got in the store around 11:45 and was out by 12:15.

The issue with just trying to "walk in at 9:00" is once word gets out they have phones, the line will get longer and longer. If they told you that info, they told many others. I would get there around 8 if they are going to process people at that time. That means you will get out of there earlier as well and get on about your day.

It told you the update details before you installed the update.

Main thing I like is stereo sound via wifi.
Also pauses the song you were listening to if you get a call or exit.

Why does installing take so long?
Installing updates for bigger programs like Pandora and Feint Aurora (sp?) took quite a while.

Hmm... didn't take long for me at all. I was on WiFi when I got the updates, and all three took less than a minute each. The three programs that updated were Aurora Feint (nice improvements here), NetNewsWire and Mobile News.

what's the best site for new apps?

+Stereo over WiFi
+Station Resume - get a phone call or switch to another app and you can resume from where you left off
+Search Auto-Complete
+On-Phone Registration

winner of an update

It's best to check Cydia for new apps. Just look under "changes".

At least twice a day it seems they get new stuff.
Slowly trickling in.

The NES emu got 2 updates in 2 days for some reason.

The download was fast (wifi at home) but the installing portion took nearly 3-5 mins each for those programs. :(

Anyone else fucking fed up with App Store stuff crashing like a bitch? WTF is this shit, this is what happens when you give the beta to corporate execs to test, I guess. Sure the enterprise features may be solid, but the stability of third party App Store stuff is a fucking joke.

It's not the fault of the app authors. Once a third party app starts crashing on boot, most of them will crash on boot until the phone gives up and reboots.

I love the 3G, but fuck, Apple, the phone reboots itself at least once a day (or I have to reboot it manually) because this shit should still be in beta testing.

The firmware 2.0 update is hella unstable, and it's not just the App Store stuff either (I wrote a 4 paragraph thing in the Notes app and I pressed backspace once and the key got stuck or something and deleted the whole fucking thing).

It sucks for the developers that have to put up with this shit, their apps are being poorly rated for crashes on launch and crap when it's not even their fault (most of the time anyway). As much as I love all the new features and third party apps, I can't wait until the 2.01 update.

Hi guys, I'll be getting a 3G in a couple of weeks (after my current contract ends).
Does anyone know whether the Pandora app works in the UK?
Their online service was restricted from UK access sometime late last year. Was wondering if they restrict it through the 3G app as well.

Yeah it takes quite some time and one update actually crashed my touch. It's alot faster and safe if you do it trough your PC/Mac imo.

So, what's the best option if I need a car charger and fm transmitter? Does anyone have anything that they know works for sure with the 3G?

I can't seem to find a solid all in one solution anywhere...doesnt apple make something?

I use the Belkin Tunebase FM. works well in my city (Montreal) but, like all FM transmitters, the results may vary from place to place.

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=390447

The Belkin has a bunch of different backing cradles and I found that the one made for the classic fits the iphone 3G near perfectly. The iphone still gives a message that the device is not made to work with it, but it charges and you can receive phone calls just fine.

Over EDGE, you'll hear a fair bit of GSM static when turned on, but 3G eliminates that entirely.

Belkin came out with a newer model that I have not yet seen in stores that is compatible with the iphone so that should eliminate the "not compatible" message when you plug it in as well as, apparently, GSM static over EDGE.

Whatever model you buy, make sure to get it from a brick and mortar store where you can easily return it if the reception is no good in your car.

So I've had the iPhone for almost a week now, and it's pretty much the best device ever made in the history of the universe. I love it to pieces. There are some things that annoy me though:

1. No FM radio.
2. No custom SMS alert.
3. Requires iTunes (I'm a linux user... Being forced to use a Windows machine is horrible).
4. It's laggy compared to the iTouch.
5. The volume buttons are too sensitive.

Otherwise, I love it and if it was thinner I'd let it invade and rest in my colon.

I've had my phone since early April, and I'm starting to get really aggravated by the post-2.0 "Backing up 'iPhone name here'" bullshit. I miss the old 5 second sync times, because I've had backups take as much as 5 minutes, which is kinda ridiculous every time I plug it in. Overall I'm not that impressed with the 2.0 firmware, considering the bugs I've encountered.

Edit: Having said that, you guys doing the GAF app are awesome, because the forums are kind of a bitch to navigate through Mobile Safari.

I'd agree. I got mine last december, and 2.0 really made the phone not as "fluid" as it used to be. It lags more and seems to get bogged down. Still a great phone, but it seems to be acting more like a computer than a mobile device now.

I think this is just the general bugginess of the 2.0 software. I've heard people with iPod Touches say that the update from 1.1.4 made their devices feel more sluggish.

Hopefully Apple gets the major problems fixed in 2.0.1

Christ, what an outdated way to take in music.

FM is actually a good feature. I thought it was pretty useless until I bought a zune, but I used the FM radio more than I used the music at times.

protip: you can cancel the backup process without cancelling the entire sync. In the iTunes status window, when it says "backing up", hit the X on the right side of the progress bar within the window. It will stop the backup but continue to sync your music and other info.

I think that's something that Apple will probably be taking steps to slap a bandage on in 2.01 or whatever comes next, especially as apps get more and more complex. Maintaining the elegant fluidity that the phone is known for is probably pretty high on their list of priorities. It kind of makes me wonder just how rushed the 2.0 firmware was in order to have it release with the 3G.

Oh hey, that's neat. Thanks for the tip.

This is a "to each his own" scenario, but other than NPR, FM is useless. I wouldn't want my iPhone sullied with it.

Pandora + AOL Radio are a thousand times better than an FM receiver anyway.

couldn't think of any reason for wanting fm radio......i've got what i like on the ipod, and pandora radio basically predicts what i'm into. i guess fm's for very un-picky people.

Yeah, my wife and I are saving up for a Macbook at the moment. The sooner I can say goodbye to this Windows box that does nothing but iTunes, the better.

Two things.

1. I live in Australia. Streaming radio across the interwebs is not really feasible. Sure, my work pays for everything for me, including the phone. But they won't be too happy to see a thousand dollar bill each month. Internet is expensive in Australia, and we have data caps.

2. We have a great national radio station called Triple J. The music is excellent, the shows they do great, and I especially like to listen to the breakfast show on the way to work.
