It's been great having all my mail pushed to the phone, but it's not in a state where I'd pay $110 a year for it yet (Canadian price)
really? i actually think it's doing everything i want it too pretty darn well. other than the really roundabout way of uploading pictures and files to me.com, it's been pretty flawless.

what's your experience been like, am i just not experiencing a lot of the problems others are?

Found a pretty good app here.

The Lonely Planet Mandarian audio phrase book.

edit: there are tons of phrase books but none of them free.

Oh man, an IRC client just launched.

Rooms. AUD$1.19. I'm buying it as we speak.

Edit:

And it is absolutely awesome. Very feature rich, and very easy to use. Excuse my excitement as I joined my regular IRC hangout:

I've had better wireless network speeds since the latest update, but much worse cell network speeds. So bad that sometimes I can't even connect.

Apple have seriously fucked up with this product. But at the same time I love the phone...

Yeah this 2.02 update has borked my cell reception. I'm getting 0 bars more frequently and Call Failed a lot. Ugh...

All I use it for is push email basically, and I don't think thats worth $110. My calendar support (of which I've used maybe 2 times) has been buggy but seems smoothed out now. Syncing bookmarks would be useful if it supported Firefox instead of internet explorer, and while push contacts is somewhat nice, it works just as well when I sync my phone to the computer.

For what I use it for $110 is a little steep.

EDIT: My calls now randomly drop out when using 3G. Great. :/

I never realized how Microsoft-y I was. I rely on my Hotmail for email and Windows Live Messenger for IM. Please for the love of god Microsoft release those for the iPhone. Hotmail won't forward to anything outside Windows Live so I can't even use the GMail trick to get my emails to the iphone mail app.

How do I get push email through gmail?

Where did you get that case from? How much was it?

On their site they say it is coming soon.
I ordered it from the www.vajacases.com, they launched the case 8/13 and it was in stock for 24hrs after which both non-clip and clip versions were sold out. The non-clip version was $80 and clip version $85. I took the non-clip version which was total $105 when shipped to Finland.

Thanks. That case is so sexy I am going to order it as soon as it is back in stock.

There are iPhone IM apps like Mobile Chat which have Windows Live Messenger support.

As for Hotmail, that is why I migrated to Gmail a few years back. Hotmail is the most restrictive of the webmail providers (no forwarding, no IMAP or POP3, etc) and all of the ads and bugs it has in other browsers etc started annoying me.

The way I have push with my gmail is that I have gmail forward all my mail to my yahoo account. Gmail gives you the option of forwarding and either deleting it or keeping it.

Well I finally got my 3g iphone tonight and it has been amazing so far, but I have just ran into a problem and I'm looking for some help. I'm having the exact problem the person in this youtube video is having. Anytime I open an app I downloaded all of a sudden it instantly closes after about 2 seconds. Any help to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Also, I have 2 stuck/dead pixels on the screen anyone know apple's stance on these? I will probably call them tomarrow durring my lunch break if I can't figure this out.

It is a known bug in the 2.0 firmware, nothing is wrong with your phone or anything. Apparently this will be fixed in the upcoming 2.1 update (September). For now you can reboot your phone (hold sleep/wake button and then swipe to turn it off), that usually fixes it.

As for the dead pixel stuff, YMMV but Apple usually seems to be cool with that if you bought it from their store and are within the return period.

Is the rogers iphone still overpriced as shit?
The device itself is fairly cheap. You can use any plan with it and have been able to since launch. Rogers stopped their shitty plans way before release.

Hmm, my just acquired iPhone seemed to be fine all day today at work -- yet here at my house, well above ground (3rd floor) the phone keeps dropping 3G signal, switching to Edge and oscillating between those two (which are fine) and a lot of No Service messaging. Anyone had similar issues like this?

But don't you have to also add in some stupid $30 additional monthly fee or something?

This fucking thing drops calls on me all the time, even when I have 3G and five bars. The internet seems to always be wonky and it's a crapshoot whether or not I get 3G despite the fact that I live in a fairly big metropolitan area (Chicago). I travel a lot throughout the day for work and it's really insane how varied the signal gets. I don't know if it's ATT or the phone, but goddamn it's frustrating to drop 4 calls in a row or not get service or get voicemails 6 hours late when your plan costs $200/month.

It's not a matter of making up or not. NO non-Windows device supports Hotmail, as it's a proprietary form of IMAP, it seems, and MS isn't willing to share how to implement it with ANYONE. Heck, Windows Live has made it impossible for some people to use it without Internet Explorer, even using Firefox on a PC doesn't give you a good success rate when it comes to connecting and sending/receiving on Hotmail.
So once again, it's not about bad blood between MS and Apple, it's about MS being a bunch of dickheads and twatbags.

onemic said:

No, your overall bill has to be over a certain amount to be eligible for the phone... $40, wasn't it?

Yeah, I kinda figured it was Microsoft being dicks. Ugh. I'm getting sort of pissed off at Windows Live Mail telling me to upgrade to the newest version of Firefox too considering I'm already on it. If it weren't so well integrated to Messenger I'd have switched long ago. I really don't want to switch after so long...

No, that's the $30 data plan. Some stores will tell you you have to add it. They are lying through their teeth to gain that data comission and will likely refuse to sell you an iPhone if you don't get it. They don't want to waste their limited iPhone stock on someone who won't get them data comission (it's like $20+ comission for data plus the $4 or whatever they get for voice as opposed to just the $4 or so for voice). They also don't want people coming back screaming about data charges since they didn't get the data plan.

You can get the iPhone without data and phone Rogers to block off all data access to your phone. It's $249.99 + tax on plans that are $30 or less. $199.99 on plans that are $35 or more. This is the base plan, not including SAF, 911, or wireless essentials.

Yeah, I used to be all about Hotmail until I started using more mobile devices and other browsers. I pretty much just use it for a spam email account now.

You can either use their iPhone specific plans or mix and match voice and data. If you opt for the mix and match route, the best value data plan is $30/mo for 6 GB of data. This promotion ends soon though, and it'll soon be back to $30/mo for 300 MB.

What is the data plan anyway, and is it essential if you get an iphone?

It wouldn't hurt to do a bit of research if you're considering getting one...these are pretty basic questions that could be easily answered and more via google or elsewhere.

Anyway, a data plan covers everything involving internet use over the cell network on the phone, like web browsing, streaming youtube video, streaming music, checking your email, etc. If you don't have a data plan you can still use these features on the iphone if you're connected by wifi, but if you don't have data access "blocked" from your phone, you'll get charged a hefty amount if you use data outside a wifi hotspot.

Well, at the moment I'm really only being charged $15 for my 6GB data and I think it's worth that. If you live in any of the large cities (Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, etc) Rogers has a pretty impressive 3G network setup. You can't really do a lot of cool things with the iPhone that you can when you have data. $30 is a tad pricy though.

Same issue for me in my apartment. Landlord says it's the building, shrug.

?

How can you use data outside of a hotspot? you wouldn't have access to the internet otherwise.

HOW?!

Like I said if you threaten to cancel,Rogers will do there best to keep you. Check out the retentions threads on howardforums and redflagdeals. What I did was explain that I was interested in data but didn't want to pay $30 so I was planning to move to Bell. They may not be able to directly credit your data but may be able to give say $10 towards your value pack or plan. I'll post more links and tips tomorrow she I'm on my PC.

My first iphone post yay!

hmm... You should read up a bit about using the internet over the cell phone lines. You know the "3G" in "iPhone 3G"? yeah, that refers to the data network that the iPhone will connect to outside of wifi hotspots.

With the iphone, and pretty much any cellphone with a data connection, you get internet access anywhere in the country that you have cell reception. It's pretty rad. And, on the iPhone in particular with its awesome web browser and apps, it makes the device into something more powerful than just phone and ipod.

That 30 bucks a month for unlimited data access is money well spent, in my mind. The internet functionality is the main reason I have an iphone, to be honest.

Yea I have to agree with that. I do not think I can go back to the regular cell phones after the iphone. Thankfully I am paying 20 dollars a month for unlimited data.

My original plan was to get an iPhone and just use it as a phone / ipod. But when work bought me mine including data, I was completely converted. I could never go without data on my phone ever again. This thing is too awesome.

So, um, is anyone in Canada (preferably in or near Montreal) currently having internet connection problems on the iphone.

My phone stopped being able to transmit data around an hour ago (9:30 EST). I don't know if it's the phone or the network. voice works fine.

I've tried switching from 3G to edge, then back again and then restarted the device. no luck. :\

edit. well it's working now, 3 hours later. must've been my phone. i rebooted two more times.

Thanks for the advice, but unfortnately rebooting the phone didn't work so I did a restore on my computer and that didn't work either. Strangely enough though I downloaded another free app from the app store on the phone and all the other downloaded apps started working again too. Just figured I would put this out there as another option to try if someone runs into the same problem.

EDIT: whoops, misunderstood.

If you don't get the provider to block data use to the phone, you can still use data, it will just cost you a shitload (something like 5c a kilobyte)

Data works fine for me, ever since 2.0.2 I've had problems with dropped calls on 3G though.

Maybe I've just been lucky(no jinx) but I haven't experienced any of these "problems" with my 3G which I bought at launch. 3G is wonky at my job, but considering the office is located outside the metropolitan area, its no surprise. At my apartment though, its rock solid. I think the one time I ran a speed test it was at 315kbps, which is comparable to most broadband-lite speeds. I've avoided the apple screen of despair, and all 20 some-odd apps I've downloaded have for the most part worked in perfect harmony(Stitcher gave me some problems). Battery is solid, screen quality is perfect, and my phone showed no problems through the two updates. Mad reception spots that I see are spots that I've always experienced poor reception at with past cell phones.

So i'm going to Japan in 10 days (for a gap year) and am thinking of purchasing an iPhone 3G. My current phone won't work there so i'm looking for an upgrade, i'm assuming an iPhone 3G would be a sensible one? And would it be more wise to buy prior to going or once I get there in Tokyo? And I won't need more than one SIM right?
(I'm a bit clueless with phones)
