You can't stop the rumor mill and apparently accessory manufacturer Beelan Enterprise of China already has a protective silicone skin available for Apple's next-generation iPod Nano.

I doubt the Major companies are going to adopt or support this program. It seems like another middle man along with itunes to deal with.

The major companies have all the resources necessary to do this on their own. I think they will stick with more of the episode style releases they have used for Watchmen, Stephen King's N. and Invincible.
 
Is it possible to connect via BT to transfer files? My gf found a jailbroken iPhone yesterday that connected to my laptop using BT and I assume was capable of transferring files (didn't bother testing). OTOH, my brand new 3G won't be recognized by my laptop eventhough it says "now discoverable" or whatever.

There is no physical manual, and the online manual only states that BT is for connecting to hands-free systems. Is my phone's BT transmitter borked, or is this another restriction of the hardware? If it's a restriction, I think I'm gonna jailbreak this phone. BT file transfer is something I almost can't do without. I use it more than anything else on my phones. PEACE.

Oh figs. :( Well, at least the tx isn't broken. Any idea if this is a DRM policy decision, or just something that haven't gotten around to patching yet? I'd be pissed, but just spent the day pulling up random websites that used to kill my PSP. I might actually start leaving my lappy at home. The browser is seriously fast. I had no idea. PEACE.

I think, based on my reading, it was more of a security issue, so Apple probably has no intention of adding it. But if you really feel a need, you can jailbreak and use SSH over a Wi-Fi network to get the file in there, just so long as it's not one of the files you would normally need to add via syncing.

I've really never had any problems at all with it and don't get the hate. It never crashes on me, it loads pretty quickly, has a clean interface and has lots of nice features (album art work look up, gapless, etc.).

Is it the best there ever was in music players? No, probably not. But it just works. ;-)

So I picked up the 3G today, I love it. 3G speeds is freaking awesome, GPS is a nice feature, and the phone feels much nicer in the hand when compared to the 1st gen iPhone.

Edit: Updating the firmware put the phone into Restore mode :/

this post is, sadly, a pretty apt summary of the typical iPhone 3G experience.

first bliss, then shock and disappointment.

Be prepared to try another restore to get the phone working again. I've gone through 4 of them.

It took about 3 attempts before it actually worked. What the hell, buggy Apple firmware updates ftl.

You pay the $45 only if you have an associated FAN number on your account - I don't know how you get them to switch you from $45 to $30 without it (when I went to transfer my phone I had to go through a whole process to get them to drop it before my contract was started as I was using a client's FAN number for a discount on my Verizon plan). Exchange works fine on either plan, the only difference is AT&T charges you more for a corporate rate - presumably because they can charge corporations more for specialized distributions that contain features like remote wipe, etc.
 
While I've had the SMS lag and a few crashes since I got it, my iPhone experience has been perfect. Updated to 2.0.2 last night and worked fine.

Now do I break my good luck streak and Jailbreak it.
 
No sexy times with my iPhone right now.

Downloaded a patch for an app through the phone itself and it locked up trying to update. Now, every time I boot the phone up (it just shows the "cycling" animation over and over...far, far longer than it's ever taken for a patch or installation before), it just shows that circling animation over and over. It never stops. I have to hard reset the phone. Now, however, I can't even get it to boot into iTunes off a hard boot. It just sits at the Apple icon screen.

What do I does:(

Yeah I got the FAN discount and the the 30 dollar plan because I told them the phone was for personal use. EDIT2: does anybody with experience with the iPhone and FANs know if applies to the data and the voice? Thats what they told me when I bought it but I don't want to get screwed after my first bill when it is too late to complain about it. (3G of course)

I hit up our active sync server just fine and synced my mail from work. I don't really wanting it checking that shit all the time so I just set up the domain and will turn it on again when I need to check my work email remotely. I would punch someone if I had to hear the ping everytime someone thought it was a good idea to email me on saturday knowing damn well I can't do anything about till monday.

EDIT::
Also are taxes really going to be 167 dollars a month like they quoted me? THat seems really high. (unless there is some dumb ass "broadband tax" in there, way to raise penetration guys!)

i really wish i'd stuck to my 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' belief for software - the 2.0.1 update has made my 2g iphone sluggish as fuck. the keyboard is slow, the sms app takes ages to load, the phone app frequently locks up for a few seconds at a time and it just feels all-round slower.

I'm using Edge and the battery is still draining at an epic rate. I've never needed to charge a phone more. I wish the charge dock was standard USB, cause I hate having to carry my charge/sync cable to work and then back home.

And because this thread is many times filled with complaints (like mine above) that may confuse/dissuade potential buyers, let me state:

I've had the phone for just over three weeks, and it's hands down the best portable device I've ever owned. Having net access anywhere I go with a good browser and awesome free apps (I haven't bought a single app yet, though I plan to) is amazing. The ipod part is wonderful, the phone part works great. YouTube and Maps are KILLER apps, etc. I had some apprehensions before buying it, but this device is truly aces.
 
Anyone else having issues with the network still? I'm in Chicago (the city proper, not the burbs) and reception is all over the place. There seems to be way too many places where I only receive EDGE reception which is slower than my 1995 Prodigy 33.6 Modem connection. Also, this fucker drops calls like nobody's business. My GF got a 3G along with me and we average about 4 call failures a day where it will just fail while she's walking to the train or sitting goddamned still. Anybody seeing anything similar?

I'm sorry for the tone, but I love this little gadget and it needs to stop teasing me.
 
if i sell my ipod touch to someone, do they lose all the apps on it once they sync it with their itunes? but it still keeps the 2.0 software i bought for it?
 
Hey everybody, quick tips for saving battery:

Turn off "Ask to Join Networks". It will still automatically join known networks, as in when you get home, get to work, etc. It just won't be constantly scanning for new signals every time you drive somewhere. You can still look for one manually when you get to the airport/restaurant/whatever.

Also,

Turn your screen brightness down just a hair from wherever it is now. Restart the phone every day or two to kill any background apps (or hold down the home button for 5 seconds).

I've been doing these things and it seems to extend it quite a bit.

I asked this before but didn't really get a response, anyone else having issues with the accuracy of the data counter? Every time I restart the phone the data counter seems to roll back a bit. I try to restart it every other day or so but the counter issue is kind of annoying. Also, does ask to join networks really save battery? The wifi still has to search for new signals to automatically join your known networks (whenever you get in range of them), as far as I know that just turns off the pop up reminding you there is an available wifi network. I just have my wifi off unless I need it.

Switch over to edge and install the 2.0.2 update and you won't drop calls as often. In Atlanta I would drop calls at least 5 times between GT's campus and my house. I was about ready to pitch this bitch out the window. Doing the above made it tolerable for now.

This is correct. Also there is no such thing as a background application on the iPhone unless you're talking about the native Apple applications like email. No other application runs in the background - they just appear to do so because developers save their state to the internal drive when told to go into a suspend state.

That is correct. So long as the device has authorized the 2.0 firmware, its not going to remove it. If they have an issue with that, alert Apple as its not supposed to be a problem.

Now Playing mysteriously stopped working for me so I think I'll get rid of it and move to this.

I have yet to drop from 3G to Edge... I think it might be just an issue down in the States with the AT&T network? Rogers' 3G seems fine although browsing speed should be faster I think. Everyone's abusing their 6GB of data. You'd think that wouldn't be an issue with the $6.95 fee we pay that supposedly lets them improve the towers -_-

I've turned off WiFi altogether. Seems to be no point if I have a data plan anyway.

I've dropped to edge in very crappy coverage areas (driving between major cities on the 401, good edge reception, no 3G though) or in certain basements that get bad cell coverage in general. Overall I've been very pleased with the availability of Rogers' 3G network, but yeah, I think the speeds aren't as fast as they could be.

I also keep WiFi off by default, only turning it on when I really want to use it. 6GB is basically unlimited data for me, I can't see ever approaching the limit.
 
No wonder there's no 3G problems in Canada, before the iPhone came out their 3G-enabled towers were almost untouched due to no one but Blackberry users willing to pay through the nose using 3G service. And even now, lots of people I see with iPhones didn't even bother with a data plan, just had Rogers disconnect them from their data servers.
 
So I go to Softbank to get one, and they were giving me some shit about how expensive the phone would be ($800?!?) and then told me that the phone might be coming to my provider (DoCoMo) by the end of the year. This is annoying as hell.
Get your shit organized and inform me, Japan.

I agree entirely.

In fact, the iphone does everything I need so well, that I can't imagine ever buying a laptop or other so called more feature rich device. I have bought a few apps for my non-jailbroken phone, and it is now just the ultimate device to keep me entertained and also work on the go:

Email
Safari
Google Maps (the absolute killer app)
iSSH - SSH client to access all my servers and work desktops
VNC Lite - VNC to my machines
Facebook
iCave - A game I got addicted to on PC. The iphone version is much smoother
Monkey Ball
Rooms - Excellent IRC client

I am fully equiped to work on stuff and just muck around no matter where I am. There's lots of little things that are cool too. Like the fact that while I'm listening to my music library on the train, I know when I'm getting a call or SMS because it plays a sound through the earphones.

Having everything in one place that also happens to fit in my pocket... Well, it's just a god send.

I totally agree, my only grip is that is the space limitation. Too bad Apple does not use SD cards.

Dispite the space limitation, I have an 8G, this phone is a godsent. I think I used Google maps & movies app more than anything on the device. Checking email is a breeze and the safari browser is such a godsent specially after surfing on the web on my psp. I actually think I play more games on my iPhone than on my psp, moonlight mahjong is quite addicting.

You could also get Files or Datacase from the app store, and move files around perfectly.
 
It's not a secret that I'd choose this phone over eternal salvation, but boy do the last several pages of this thread make me glad that I didn't "upgrade" my EDGE phone for 3G.

Mine already works fine, and 3G coverage in my area is probably spotty. Besides, after doing a restore on 2.0.2, I easily get 2 heavy use days of battery life. Mine must be at the happy end of the production bell curve :D

Yeah, I'm kind of glad I decided to wait as well, although there are some indications that the 3G issues have more to do with the carriers than the phone itself, as were earlier reported.

Also, I didn't see this posted in the thread, but I may have missed it. Has anyone seen this little video that shows a graphics trick for making images appear to pop-off the iPhone screen almost like a hologram?

Really? The only follow-up I've seen to it was that the developer said it wasn't a real app, just a tech demo, and that he'd be interested in working with other devs to use the tech somehow.

How was it a hoax?
