I reckon it's only going to be a couple of months for a real alternative to the iPhone. The first phone to launch with Google's Android, the HTC Dream. If there's any phone OS that can best the iPhone's, it's this one.

I decided to join the party. Sold my Nokia N95 that I got just three weeks ago, mainly because the sound quality on the mp3 player was terrible (I use my phone as a music player, my old SonyEricsson sounded alright), using the internet with the tiny screen and buttons is a hassle and the GPS was pretty useless anyway.

So I got myself a secondhand 2G iPhone to see what the fuss was about and I friggin love it. :D

Wow you used the Nokia N95 as your music player? ouch. I do agree once you have the iPhone it is hard to go back. This phone is the perfect fusion of phone, ipod and internet device among other things as well. I'm always searching on the iTunes store for more apps, it gets very addicting but I do find very useful apps like the movies app.

The google maps on the iPhone is a godsend, I've used this many times getting around. I doubt there is any phone that can provide the same functionality and ease of use as the iPhone.

Functionality: lots of phones can provide the same functions. And, as many critics will mention, they can do MORE than the iPhone.

but ease of use? No one has come close. And that's why the iPhone rocks our socks.

I'm interested in the Android devices coming up soon, if only to see how they compare with the iPhone's UI and app support. some of the recent Android app mockups are all over the place in terms of UI as there's no real baseline to work from yet. I hope the platform does well and pushes Apple to keep innovating but I'm not optimistic that it'll be a home run in the first rev.

I was excited for the Dream, the leaked specs are a bit worrying.

The only massive positive at the moment is that the first version of the app store won't be able to charge for anything.

The best thing of Android IMO is the lack fo a verification process for all apps. No need to even jailbreak a phone basically.

I wonder how long it takes until someone hacks the iPhone to install Android on it :p

I imagine stuff will be removed from the app store just like it is from youtube, but I suppose you wont have to use the app store so that's not a problem.

I really dislike that keyboard. I wonder how navigating the websites will be like without multi-touch since apple has a patent on it.

Apple has a patent on their implementation. Not on the idea. The latest HTC handsets are actually capable of multi-touch, but it isn't implemented outside of debug software.

Damn that sucks, the touch diamond looks hot. It'd be even better with multi-touch :/

Are you referring to the diamond? It's actually just two separate touch panels. You can't do multitouch on the same side of the phone.

Is it just me, or does that look really ugly? I really hope that hardware providers skin Android in something much more attractive.

gaf i've got a contacts backup question to ask on a Windows Vista.

i don't use outlook so have resorted to using Windows Contacts to perform my initial iPhone Contacts backup.

however i've since updated some of the contacts details... but when I try to sync, the syncing does not update the contact details in Windows Contacts.

Even after removing the contacts, iTunes did not download them :(

what am I doing wrong gaf?

Seeing those pics of the dream make me wish that the iphone was more customizable without having to jailbreak.

I'm just glad the iPhone isn't as ugly looking at the HTC DREAM.

I got another fucking apple logo screen of death today. This was like the 5th or 6th time I think.

Ugh. I don't really want to send it to Apple :\

I got my iPhone on Sunday and now while nitpicking over dust installing the antiglare film I spotted a stuck pix. I was going mad trying to fix it. Now I have to wait until Saturday for a "genius" appointment. It's not the end of the world assuming they swap it out. I was psyched to get it all cased up.

So now I have a new iPhone. So far no stuck pixel or dust particle as the last model likely had as it appeared white when off. The new iPhone. Came with 2.02 installed. Old one had 2.01. I like feeling I got a newer product. I swear it's easier to type than before.

I've got a similar problem but with Outlook Calendar. I input stuff on my iPhone but it doesn't sync up on the PC side.

I had to jailbreak my iPhone because of the simlock, but I was really impressed by the hacks out there. Using QuickPwn the whole process is so incredibly simple and streamlined. Copying files onto the phone is also a breeze using iPhoneBrowser. That's one of the things I love most about the iPhone, there's such an active community out there creating cool stuff for it, be it on the App Store or outside of it.

So what makes the cut on yous guys's home screens? I'm mostly interested in downloaded apps that you get the most use out of. Here's mine:

1359165a.jpg

1. SMS, Calendar, Photos, Camera
2. Contacts, Clock, AIM, Notes
3. Google Reader link, "Scoop" Digg.com app, Wikipanion app, Youtube
4. Facebook app, Settings, App Store, Things app
5. Default phone, mail, safari, iPod

I just realized there's a photobucket app, and I used to upload the pic above. Not too shabby. :D

The only app some of you won't immediately identify is the green one, that's Currency. Awesome app.

I started using Evernote a few days ago, and I must say... it's amazing.

I love the fact that I can copy and paste chunks of information from the web and sync it with my mobile phone in seconds. Most productive app I've installed so far.

Anyone see ESPN's new mobile site? I installed SportsTap over the weekend, now that the college and pro football seasons are upon us, and although I thought it was quite nice, it took forever to get any updates.

When checking a score yesterday I decided it was faster just to surf over to ESPN.com, but instead of being greeted with the standard page, I got a nice iPhone formated one instead that was very fast to load, offered the top scores on the front screen, and rotated them automatically, and had headlines and analysis right at your fingertips. I immediately uninstalled SportsTap, and added ESPN Mobile to my home screen, and was happy to see a nice iPhone icon as well. Very nice and just in time for the NFL to return.

I've had the 3G for a couple of weeks now and I don't want to go back to other phones. Even with the glaring shortcomings, I'm happy with it. I'll give Apple the benefit of the doubt that the bugs and lag will be cleaned up in September. Now, if Apple bothers to get a couple of the no-brainer options - useful alerts for missed calls/texts/emails, landscape keyboard for texts and email - I'll really be satisfied.

Thanks for the heads up. I had been using Score Mobile for league standings but the ESPN site works better for me. faster loading and with links to a lot more info and stats. damn. good job ESPN!

I'll join in the home screen sharing party. no wacky themes for me.

I've had way more stability problems (including the dreaded apple logo reboot loop) when I sync more apps, hitting 4 pages or more. I'll keep it down to 3 pages until Apple releases 2.1 and then I'll try my luck again.

hold down the sleep/wake button on top and then hit the home button. iphone saves the pic on your camera roll. (screen will flash white)

then just transfer them back to your computer on the next sync. or email them, whatever.

erm how do you guys take nice spiffy Home screen shots? those aren't with a digital camera for sure.
Looks like someone hasn't spent his/her time googling "hawt iphone tips" as much as the rest of us. Shame shame! ;)

Edit: beaten like a Samsung Instinct.

thanks LCfiner.

yeh im a nub when it comes to iphone tips & tricks. i've had it for less than a month - my excuse being real busy with RL to go digging around for tips :(

tried the tip above and its pretty neat! now if i only could get my contacts backed-up properly then my plans for world domination may begin.

Searched online and in this thread. We just got an iphone today and the rep told us to turn it off once a day. What the fuck does that do? Is it completely necessary?

Will jailbreaking the iphone let me

1. use flash

2. download or stream mp3s from websites

?

that's dumb but thanks for the quick response.

It's theoretically possible though, right? If someone took the time to code a non-safari browser or whatever.

Its not the browser that's a problem - its an issue of Flash simply not having been ported to the iPhone.... or more specifically Apple has chosen to not make that implementation available.

so that's why jailbroken homebrew should do it.

To do what you want it to do, any jailbreak app would have to plug in directly into safari to allow for the stuff to work in the browser.

Or there would need to be a brand new browser would that replicates all of safari functionality and then adds flash support. lots of work.

I don't expect either option to happen. For one, I suspect that Adobe would need to be involved for a fast flash player and they're not going to work with the jailbreak dev environment and Apple does not want any dev hooking into safari on the real SDK.

If you want flash on a mobile device, the iPhone is not want you want right now.

with that said, I'm still fine with flash being absent on the thing.
Most site that use flash, abuse flash.

Fuck I install a theme and stuff on my pc and now itunes says it doesn't have the right software to detect iphone. I've reinstalled it with same problem.
I looked and there is no Apple mobile devices installed. Anyone know how I can fix this?

You can already stream mp3s from websites. Just load the http://<blah>.mp3 link in safari and a mini ipod-esque player pops up.
