Not really all that harsh, they just want you to pay your bill. Did you expect that they were just going to let you have the item at 70% off? :lol

Yeah, they only do invoices like every week or 10 days, probably to save on charges from the credit companies (99 cent charges are silly expensive)

I've been hovering over this thread looking here an there ever since I got the 3G iPhone in Canada. Is there a quick post somewhere that has the best most recommended apps, or once that you use?

I've also noticed that whole ESPN and NeoGAF wepapp. Are there any other similar sites that have that?

So does the Pandora app only work in the US?
Is there anyway around this?

Cause I have the website working here in Aus and would nice to have it on the iPhone aswell.

Yeah I do use Last.fm as well, but primarily as a keeper of my song data because Pandora is just so good at what it does.

I can easily download the Pandora app from the Australian store. (That's the only thing I would achieve by following those steps right?)
I was just checking whether the Pandora app would work out of the US though I doubt it would.

So you install a really busy theme with lots of unnecessary details..?

Uh? The point is i have only one page of apps with everything ordered inside folders. What's so busy about the theme? The background throws you off?

I understand that part, you don't want it cluttered. You want it to be minimalistic even. But the theme you're using is like the total opposite.

The carbon background is okay, but the idiotic borders and lights around the icons is just gnarly. But then again, I have different expectations and reasons for installing a third party skin. And also, it's not a very well made skin. Just look how 'Wednesday' conflicts with those borders... Stuff like that makes baby Jesus cry! (I pay close attention to that kinda stuff as I'm an interface designer)

You need to lay off the caffeine.

What makes folders better than just sliding between pages? I also agree that that theme is atrocious.

Well, if I had 4 screens as opposed to 4 folders, and put all the apps from folder 4 onto page 4, I'd have to scroll 3 times to get to page 4 as opposed to just pressing the 4th folder on the main page. That saves time doesn't it?

The entire point of my springboard was to save space and organize, whether or not you actually like the icons or the background is beside the point. Clearly, folders are a better organization tool then screens.

Imagine having 6 or 7 folders as opposed to 6 or 7 screens to flip through.

well, I just updated to the 2.02 firmware and it basically broke my 3G signal. It will just keep loading or just go painfully slow. I shut off 3G and edge works fine. Any suggestions?

All these shitty user-made themes only serve to further demonstrate how good Apple's GUI designers are. If any of the themes posted here were given as examples of work at an Apple interview they'd be laughed out of the building.

Sorry but the stock icons that apple provides are boring as shit.

Are you honestly going to tell me that this:

looks better then the phone icon I used above?

Ya, but I'm not applying for a job at Apple--I just want to look at my phone and have it look the way I want it to.

Sure, Apple has some of the best designers in the world, I wouldn't argue with that; I'm not THAT much of a fool. However, once I buy something, I think it's ridiculous to be locked out of editing the appearance of the UI without having to risk bricking the product and being out of the loop for official updates. Kind of an annoying policy on Apple's part, in my opinion. Besides, all of this stuff is subjective, and the only person who I care about liking *my* phone's appearance is me, that's the beauty of owning your own.

All that aside, I still bought one (and think it's a wonderful gadget).

not so fast, there... While it's true that it may be faster to have shortcuts to 6 or 7 pages of apps, I think the extra complexity it adds and need for the user to know the difference between a folder and application may not be worth it.

At least, not worth it for Apple to implement. Only very, very few users would benefit from having folders.

The standard setup has one type of interaction. you touch an icon and an app loads. there's no hierarchy involved; no abstraction of the file system.

By adding folders, it introduces some complexity. How does a user know if he's on the main home screen or a folder's app screen? If he loads an app from within a folder and then presses the home button, does he go back to the folder page or the main screen? if the former, then would he need to double tap to go back to the real home screen?

Plus there would need to be an additional interface for creating and managing folders.

Sure, we all understand folders on the desktop, but i think it was a good decision for Apple to eliminate that idea on the iPhone.

edit: @ Manics. are you joking?? the iPhone icon in your theme looks terrible. for one thing, it's not even clear that it accesses phone functionality. It's just a picture of the device, but the device does so many things how could a user expect that to be the "phone" part of the iPhone. and not, say, the internet or mail function. let's not talk about labels. this is about the icon.

Secondly, the angle and proportion look awkward and it's altogether too damn big sitting on the dock. it really looks out of place. the apple icon is way better, both from a usability and aesthetic perspective.

You must think that traffic signs are boring and poor in design as well. These icons, like many other simple designs, are meant to be understood in a more international marketplace. There's no need to explain the Phone icon, it's crystal clear what it does, so you can navigate to it even if the phone was in Cantonese or something.

Then what's the point of the text under the icons that say "Phone", "iPod" etc? Your traffic sign analogy isn't a good one when the iPhone icons actually describe what they do directly underneath each picture. The flat mono-coloured icons that apple uses by default are very boring and is a main reason why people mod their iPhone and iPods to get them looking a hell of a lot sexier.

I dunno, why do stop signs have "STOP" written on them in big white letters? And the reason for text underneath is for icons that do not come as the default, like web bookmarks, that don't have the option of clear identification, and having text for some things and not others break the uniform appearance of the UI.
And if you're going for "a hell of a lot sexier"... I don't really think there was success in that regard, but personal tastes vary A LOT, I guess.

I wouldn't disagree with you at all on this topic. Having the ability to customize the look of the UI can be a good thing. Unfortunately, that ability is being destroyed by the fact that I have yet to see a user created theme/UI that doesn't look like shit.

Sometimes being able to change things, doesn't mean you should change things.

None of the new themes or icons I've seen in this entire thread have been worth it. They're all garbage.

The green plain phone blows away the cheap looking plain iPhone icon you have, and you've demonstrated that you don't know a fucking thing about iconography or visual design. I hate the gloss and gradients Apple is using lately, but the icon works. At the very least, it actually looks like a button. When the theme designers get the most basic and rudimentary part of icon design right, maybe I'll give a shit.

How about the iPod button? Does apple's orange plain button look more like an iPod then my image of a real iPod image?

You don't seem to be getting this, do you? :lol

Your buttons are ugly. Ugly. More power to you if you want to change them, but man up and accept that not everyone shares your "taste".

Wow. OK, I love the Apple fanboys in this thread. Nothing that Apple creates can possibly be topped. :lol

Umm Apple stock one looks better. Apple is known for their design and simplicity. Some of you guys need to read up on what looks dumb in the design world, especially on an Apple device.

The main difference is that the Apple icons match each other when placed together on the dock. Your two icons don't go together at all. This is one thing that makes the Apple icon better.

Your ipod icon doesn't match the iphone icon. The iPhone is slanted at an angle but the ipod is shown straight on. They don't look like they belong in the same set.

When displaying a set of icons, consistency is important. having this messy hodgepodge of icons in different orientations, different sizes, etc makes the whole thing look ugly and amateurish.

Oh, and then there's the more subtle issue of both your icons representing "real life" objects. One of which is the actual iphone you hold in your hand, the other being a different device that you don't have.

The Apple icons are not as literal. they are glyphs that suggest functionality, and not objects.

But, again, there's no accounting for taste. If you like your screen, fine. But please don't suggest that it's somehow, qualitatively better than the Apple solution. It is not.

edit: @ the other Apple guys here. Am I wasting my time actually trying to actually explain this shit? I feel like it's a copout to just say it doesn't work without giving any reason why.

No one has said that. There are a number of themes on the Mac that people have fallen in love with. I love how people have to pull out the "Apple fanboys" card when the majority of people disagree with them on what looks nice.

The funny thing is I didn't even post my desktop for the icon replacement, I was only talking about un-cluttering with the folders which is something that Apple should REALLY consider implementing in the stock firmware.

Can you imagine having 9 pages of applications all downloaded from the app store, and having to scroll from page 1 to page 9?? That is totally ridiculous. Folders is the way to go and IF apple implements them in a firmware release, the same guys that ripped it as being non-intuitive in this thread will be washing the balls of Jobs for putting it in. Wow folders! Thanks Jobs!

Icon debate aside, having folders organizing your apps into separate categories is WAY better than multiple screens.

I suppose, but I imagine if Apple does it, it will be more...polished.

I stand by my previous post. If, for whatever reason, Apple adds folders and hierarchy to the iphone home screen, I will call it a big mistake. I ain't washing no Jobs balls.

Now, if Apple comes out with a tablet like device with file system access that can handle more complex apps, that's a different beast. categorization might work there.

I agree with you and the icons actually DON'T belong to the same set. I just pick and chose icons that I liked which represented real life pictures as opposed to the same consistent "button look".

However, the theme that I posted FIRST, did have the same consistent button look and all icons appeared to belong to the same theme, but people still complained about it. So if you go against Apple, you are slammed. I like my desktop just the way it is, if you think I have no style that's great.
