I just realized a slight change to the iPod app. It used to be that if you brought up the scrubber and then left the app to check your mail or whatever, and then came back to the iPod app the scrubber would be gone and you'd have to tap it to bring it up again. They FINALLY switched it so that if you bring up the scrubber it stays up even if you leave the iPod app and come back. Thank god. That drove me nuts.

I can't say it is conclusive because the update was just Friday, but I noticed that I have been getting better signals as well. Previously I was getting 2-3 bars in the basement of my office and now I was getting a full 5 bars. Similarly I noticed I was getting MUCH better 3G reception.

On the flipside, I still get a lot of keyboard input lag on websites. Contacts are fine though.

I think I've been getting better reception with my iPhone OG. I used to get 1 or 2 bars in the back of my house and now I get 3. I'm still getting keyboard lag on websites too, but at least it's not as bad as it was with texting, and thank god the texting keyboard lag is gone.

I walked home from work today and I had 4-5 bars of 3G signal the whole way (or at least every time I checked, which was a few times). Before 2.1 I'd have 3G when I left work in the middle of town and when I got home, but between that it was EDGE/GPRS the whole way. Huzzah!

Hai guys! I'm new to the iPhone and have two quick questions.

1. On safari if I want to get to the bottom of a page quickly how do I do that?
2. How to I send a text msg with a photo in it?

Thanks,

Is there another good Free RSS feed reader app other than NetNewsWire or SyncRSS??

SyncRSS is the newest one and it sucks ass.

NetNewsWire is quirky sometimes

Ok battery update. 5 hours and 6 minutes of usage (both edge and 3G) and 1 day and 5 hours of standby and battery has just now given me the 20% warning indicator.

I have to say that that is an acceptable battery life for me. You always want more, but how many cell phones give you more usage time than that?

Oh yeah, battery life is awesome now.

yesterday I used the phone pretty heavily all day (but no 3G or wifi) and it barely moved a rice grain by midnight.

Today, I signed onto AIM at 9am. I left AIM running (AIM does not go into sleep mode, which means the screen was on the entire time) from 9am - 1pm and it did not pass beneath 60% of battery. I was very impressed.

I'd say GPS usage has improved DRASTICALLY, too for me. Before, if i was plotting out a course while driving for fun, i'd get maybe 2 hours of battery life, now it's closer to 3. Woohoo!

I find it weird that a software update could improve reception and battery life this much. Just goes to show how half assed the launch of the 3G was.

I don't know if it's just a placebo effect, but my battery seems only SLIGHTLY better.
I still have to charge every night, and it's a good idea to keep it as charged as possible anyway.

Tried out the FLUTTER mms app.
Sent a message to a friend, she told me it came as a link, which she had to copy/paste (cries) from her phone's text into her phone's browser to see. Guess it wasn't clickable?

I've asked her to send me a picture message, here we go!

Sadly, there are very few RSS readers on the iphone. NNW can stall so badly on the sync read/unread status that I gave up on it and now use Google Reader (I read feeds more often on the phone than the desktop so that experience had to take priority)

the Google Reader webapp is pretty darn good and, of course, syncs your feeds so when you get back to your desk it's all up to date.

None of the readers, aside from Byline (which syncs witth Google Reader and costs 10 bucks) can sync your feeds to a service. I was hoping for more google reader syncing apps.

if you don't care about syncing, Feeds (green icon with white newspaper image in center), Manifesto and Newstand have gotten good reviews. i did not buy them, though.

If you want Free and the ability to sync with a service, you only have one real choice. the Google Reader webapp.

If I am not mistaken, Flutter can only send MMS not receive.

Ah, you're quite right, I just read up on it to make sure.

Also, thinking about it now, I realize it isn't real MMS if she can't see the picture in her message directly.

I'm basically just emailing her a link to it and Flutter is hosting.

SwrilyMMS for 1.x jailbroken phones worked PERFECTLY.

All they need to do is get it up on App Store, or re-do it, for 2.x.

That would send and receive perfecty, and the mms's were saved on your phone.

Are the updates that Apple releases similar to what you can update on another network? For example, on Verizon I could update the roaming on my phone by dialing *228. If AT&T improved the network somehow and 3G isn't searching as much this could help battery life a lot. I'm mostly thinking out loud but better battery life might not be all because of Apple.

Battery life is much better. Signal is better. Apps are more responsive and I haven't had one crash yet. This latest patch is a damn god send.

So I went out and re-bought the 3G iPhone. This battery life improvement better be worth it.
I have gotten about 5.5 hours of usage (split between Edge, 3G and wifi) with 34 hours of standby and my battery is now giving me the 10% warning.

So if that is satisfactory to you go for it. If it isn't, well I can't really think of a phone with much better battery life than that.

That is fantastic, when I first bought the 3G half of a day of Wifi + Music would decimate the battery.

Anyone have any good skins for gpSPhone?
I have a pretty good basic dark grey one.. but was wondering if there were some awesome ones out there.

A question for everyone using Palringo........is there a reason it keeps telling my my passwords are wrong for every single IM I have, even though I've gone back and tested them to make sure they were right?

My early impressions on Star Wars the Force Unleashed:

I have almost completed Force Unleashed for the iPhone. 6 chapters in total and a 'Survival' mode.

You don't control your character which were to be expected as previews have already indicated. Though, you have complete control over your force powers and there are many of them. Mind control, lightning, push/pull, drain and so on. You do those attacks by writing commands written above the enemies heads.

You can gain health by doing a circle anywhere on the screen, so it has so far never gotten challenging at all. Your force meter regains pretty fast. Though, I do love the cinematic view, graphics (backgrounds in particular are fantastic artistically) and there's a new approach to every boss encounter. But when the game is done, I can't see me going back for yet another play-through. Hilariously bad dialogue as well.

Battery like is MUCH BETTER. I mean absurdly better. Its like going from the Motorola Q to something that actually has a battery in it.

before iPhone I went from Q to palm treo 755p, battery life was "lol better"

You know, I wish Apple would just go ahead and mention specific tweaks for their updates, instead of people having to discover them accidentally. Here's a couple more new things about the 2.1 firmware:
- Pause application installations by tapping on the icon.
- Triple clicking on the headset button goes to the previous track
- Podcasts listings indicate partially listened to items.
- iPod song listings show artist and album name
- Improved compatibility with certain bluetooth headsets.

Eh, I guess 3-4 are faily obvious.

Also, theres some reports that new macbooks have started to ship. Aluminum casing, LED, and 'aggressive' pricing. Supposedly may be available by the end of the month. If this is true, Im there fucking day 1.

Gee, I hope this finally means a DVD burner in the 1000 dollar model. :D

on topic: I'm also noticing some nice battery life increases with 2.1 installed. Instead of having my battery at 20% at the end of the day with a good mix of music, web browsing, etc I now seem to be at around 40 or 50%.

This makes a lot more sense since, before with 2.0, just listening to music would occasionally suck down battery life really fast as if some background process were running and using the 3G radio.

I like the Cult of Mac theory posited today that "Agressive Pricing" means a lower entry level price for MacBooks, followed by a discontinuation of the pro-line for an overall cheaper line-up of all Aluminum MacBooks (there's currently a >$600 luxury tax for essentially a different case and a GPU between the MacBook and Pro):

It's empty speculation, but it would make sense and I'd like it. I was wondering how they'd visually differentiate if there were only aluminum laptops, but the only real difference is the graphics card so why not just consolidate it all? I could see just one MacBook (really, they're currently all the same but the most minor speed bumps) and three Pros reduced to just being called MacBooks (13, 15 and 17).

My thought process ran nearly identical to yours.

If you can consolidate your marketing/production/message AND increase volume at a time when people have a little less to spend, then it's a great proposition.

To add my guesswork to the mix, I imagine the keyboard would maintain the design and black keys, much like the Air.

Do y'all think that there will be a storage capacity upgrade for the iPhone before next June?

Maybe but I'd lean towards no, they're already fairly heavily subsidized and flash memory is still kinda pricy (at least, for a 32GB model)

I think Apple wants to make sure they maintain their $199/$299 price point.

2.1 has sucked for me other than the contact list being quick. I can't make a post longer than two sentences without the browser crashing. Keyboard lags like hell still. last.fm is broke on 2.1. Yay -_-

What the fuck?? Since when does iphone support playback of avi files? I've been converting avi files to mp4 all this time- and today, I accident dragged an avi file to itunes, syncs it to iphone and it didnt need conversion!! Is this new, or am I just an idiot? Im going to feel incredibly stupid if it could do this since day 1.. to think of the hundreds of hrs of wasted conversions, and hundreds of GBs of wasted HDD space.

Okay, I have been hunting around, and maybe I'm just dumb, but what?
Okay, so I can get a pop up on my iPhone when I get an email... why can't it play a sound or vibrate?

Extensions are only used to let the computer know what app to run it with.

So pretty much the quickest way to know if a video is itunes-compatible is to drag it to the window?

Nope. I mean, it plays a sound when I go into Mail.app but uh, I kinda already know I have mail by that point.

We're talking about real mail, not SMS right? I mean, there isn't really an option for it.
I mean, like I said, it does that when you GO INTO MAIL.APP but who fucking cares at that point? I want to know when my phone is in my pocket.

Yes, I'm talking about e-mail. I have mine set to check every hour and when there is something new, it dings and vibrates.
