Check every hour? You're joking.
I get an email. My phone beeps. This is how it works.
Like I said. I just emailed my phone now. A display pops up and tells me that I have new mail. When this happens, I want a sound and vibration to occur. Where are the settings for this?

You have "push" turned on. I turned it off to save battery and I'm not using a server that supports push. Where is the part where I'm joking? I don't have mission critical e-mail on my phone that I need to have it checking every 15 minutes, and I can check manually in the times that I have to.

What in the cock are you talking about dude? This is a goddamned feature that phones have. You mail someone, your phone beeps as you get the message.
The phone is ALREADY GIVING A DISPLAY TO SAY THAT THERE IS A NEW MESSAGE. Now, where is the option of making it beep and vibrate?

Wow, just wow. Settings then sounds, turn on vibrate.

It's magic and apparently you havent leveled up sufficiently to unlock that feature.

VIBRATE IS ON! That is for when you are in mail.app. Jesus fucking chist, are we not talking about the same thing here?

When the phone is sitting right by my side and I get a mail, it does NOTHING but display a message that says "You have new mail." no audible or physical alert! What is the point? If I am not looking at my phone how would I know I have a mail? If you had a phone, and instead of ringing when you got a call, it just displayed on the screen "THERE IS A CALL COMING" what goddamn use would it be? This is the same thing!

Apparently your phone is fucked. Works for everyone else but you I guess. Better return it for a Blackberry.

Just to be perfectly clear, the switch on the side of the phone above the volume... it is off right. Not with a red dot?

Looks that way.

Could be.

What if you use fetch instead of push, does it make a difference?

No, of course the silence switch is not on. IT MAKES NOISES IN MAIL.APP LIKE I HAVE SAID ALREADY!
Christ.
Just to be clear you are telling me that when you have this display, your phone makes a noise?

He would still get vibration even if the silent mode was enabled. And as he said he does get a sound when he goes into his mail. Seems like a weird problem. I'd try restoring without backup.

Uh... I never get that message. Are you using some kind of third party app or jailbroken phone?

no, I don't think most of us ever get a new email message like that. Maybe it's because most of us can't use push? Try it while using fetch mode instead.

Kung Fu Jedi said:

No, just bought the thing today.
Now, logically as I get this message the phone should alert me. But it doesn't!

Holy shit never seen that screen before, usually mine beeps and the counter on the mail icon goes up :/

Okay, so now I am REALLY confused. I mean, I always get this message as soon as I get an email. I just figured a noise and a vibration to go with it would make sense.

wow.

I've never seen that before. Even with push mail.

Maybe it's a japan only feature. I don't get any notice except for sound when an email arrives

HOLY CRAP YOU GUYS SUCK SO MUCH I CAN'T GET A BEEP WHEN I GET A MAIL AND YOU JERKS HAVE TO TELL ME HOW TO FIX THIS BECAUSE IT IS SO OBVIOUSLY WRONG WITH THIS DEVICE AND YOU ASSES ARE ALL PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS AND I VISIT THIS FORUM AND DESERVE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE RATHER THAN CALLING MY PHONE PROVIDER OR APPLE TECHNICAL SUPPORT AND I WILL KEEP YELLING UNTIL YOU TELL ME WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS CRAP!!

Maybe? I don't know. But if I only get that ding and vibration when it checks every fifteen minutes that kinda goes against the logic of getting email to your phone in the first place.

Calm down, and read what I said.

Since it doesn't resemble anything that anyone else in this thread has seen, it is more than likely some own faux push-mail notification that you're provider has implemented. It is therefore understandable that it wouldn't function properly. What e-mail provider hosts the account?

Why is everyone assuming I'm freaking out? Y'all are the ones attacking me. Christ!

SoftBank is the provider and my address ends in i.softbank.jp

never seen that screen before. I have push and fetch turned off though. my phone vibrates once and makes a single tone when I get a mail. I usually open mail, then just immediately put the phone in standby and it will manually fetch whatever is there.

Presumably because of your liberal use of caps and the lord's name in vain.

SoftBank is the provider and my address ends in i.softbank.jp

You have to settle for using fetch then, since proper push only works for a few providers.

How does getting e-mail every 15 minutes go against the logic of getting e-mail on your phone? Seriously? If you have Push, it will arrive immediately, but it can kill battery life. But your e-mail client on your desktop computer is set to check mail at a set interval as well. That's how e-mail works. Those intervals can be set smaller on a computer, but the iPhone is trying to balance battery life and efficiency as best it can.

Also, people think you're freaking out because of the way you attacked me, and others, when we were trying to help you out and resolve the issue.

He likes it, though.

That's just crazy. Why would you offer a phone that cannot be used like a phone? :(

Because in all my years of having phones it never worked like this?
If I send emails to the two phones I have right now, one will ding in seconds the iPhone will ding whenever the timer hits its fifteen minutes. How is that not ridiculous?

What are you talking about? How does the method that your e-mail uses to retrieve new messages effect how you can use the device as a phone? You're really not making a lot of sense here.

RevenantKioku said:

wat? Since when are phones expected to instantly alert you of new e-mail?

Edit: Oh, I see. In the magical land of Nippon.

Because if I can't know the INSTANT I get an email like every other phone what is the point?
It's like having a phone that tells you fifteen minutes after getting a phone call that someone tried to call you. You just didn't happen to look at the screen at the right time.

Ok. If your e-mail is THAT important to you that you need to be alerted immediately, than you need a different device. Not all phones alert you immediately. They would need to have push technology, which the iPhone does by the way, and you then need an e-mail server that supports it.

I said it earlier and I'll say it again. Take it back. Get a Blackberry, as clearly this is not the device for you. Just make sure what ever e-mail server you are using with your Blackberry supports Push like Exchange with Active Sync.

Well, I'm just confused. I figured the thing would have a standard feature if they are going to offer it here. No one I talked to who has one complained about it, but I just figured there had to be some logical way of working with it.
Too late now though, locked in for two years! I guess I'll learn to deal?

It's not really a standard feature in a global sense. Most phones in Europe and the US barely do mail in a meaningful way. It is evident by your provider's poorly conceived hack that it is a must have feature over there, though. Perhaps they're working on rolling out a proper implementation?

Not that it helps, but honestly, any communication that requires a response within less than 15 minutes shouldn't be done over e-mail.

I never make phone calls here, though. Everything is done by email and I do tons of browsing so the iPhone just made sense for me. I guess I kinda just forgot about that Japan is special in that SMS is really not used, ever. Or rather, I think of SMS and email as the same thing now, when clearly I should not.

Perhaps I'll just get used to it as I got used to getting my emails instantly. If they can do this popup, though, I would assume it could make a noise! Damn them. Damn them hard. I guess it just kinda makes me like I am constantly on a train and can't hear/feel my phone.

Reading about push servers and all that, it seems Yahoo! mail does it, and I know Yahoo! and SoftBank are in cahoots together, so why couldn't this be put together is beyond me.

Oh, and although it is nonsensical (maybe?) I was sitting here fluxing between 3 and 5 bars before upgrading to 2.1 but I have been at a full 5 ever since.

Wow... that You Got a Mail message is ultralame. And I've never seen it on the US iPhone...so I don't really get why it would be on the Japanese one. That's just ridiculously stupid.

It's almost immensely useful. I just wish it made a noise.

I'll take the mail sound/vibration and a "1" by the envelope icon that the US iPhone does. Why would Apple change that for Japan? Doesn't make much sense.

I do get that, but whenever it checks the whatever every fifteen minutes. This pops up immediately but without sound/vibration. Had they simply added sound and vibration, this would have been perfect. As it stands now it is just confusing.

I'll take a damned video if I have to!
When this shows up, the phone does not vibrate or make a noise.
Now, if I were to wait around 15 minutes I'd get a nice beep, but why would I do that? :P

Yeah, I hardly ever notice my quick 'buzz and beep' when I get new mail.

Is your email provider sending you a text message each time you get an email?
And then your phone gets the email after you open the app, which is why you only feel the vibration then, or after it fetches it (long after you get the message)

I can't see the pic so I can't see if it looks like an SMS message.

how about you take a screenshot for us, proving you have the settings i showed you on, your volume for notices up, and the vibrate option on? What email client are you on? Is it set up to POP or IMAP? Is your iphone set up to fetch the email? Does the email client have a push service?

Did you see the screenshot? The notification RevenantPEINS receives seems to be totally detached from the Mail app on the iPhone, and just some carrier implemented service message. It is not before he opens the Mail app and refreshes the inbox that it becomes aware of any new messages.

Please let this discussion die now. It has polluted an already noisy thread for far too long.
