iPhone - Official Thread

So I finally picked up an iPhone yesterday. I was never going to get one due to the need to have a $60/mo minimum plan, but then I found out that wasn't the case for Canada! Still on my $25/mo phone plan with no data plan, so I won't be browsing the net abroad.

Still, I'm loving this phone. I'm usually somewhere where I have internet access, so the loss of a data plan isn't a really huge deal. My only real complaint is that I found out I can't even use the GPS and map feature away from Wi-Fi without a damn data plan. Total suck.

Nice little story about purchasing my phone actually. I went to the store yesterday to buy it, and on the Rogers network at least, the purchase price of the phone is sent to the Rogers account (so I wasn't billed when I purchased the phone). I asked for an 8GB model, and when I got home, I realized I got a 16GB. I thought this was a nice stroke of luck at first, until I realized the bill clearly showed 16GB, so I was sure Rogers would charge me for 16GB. I realized the best way to not get screwed was to go down to the store where I bought my iPhone. I told the rep that he accidentally gave me a 16GB model, and he notified me they couldn't resell returned phones. So to rectify this, he's calling Rogers to ensure I get charged for an 8GB model. $200 for a 16GB iPhone, WOOT!

Overall I'm absolutely loving this device.

The software interface is fantastic. I can't believe how well typing on the keyboard works. I do quite a few mistypes (since my thumb points to a letter, but the edge of my thumb that touches is more towards the right). With a bit of adjustment, I should have no problem typing. I love having the letter pop up if I hold my thumb down for a little while, which alleviates any frustrations that could pop up while typing.

The hardware interface is great as well. I'm so happy one of my phones finally has a switch to turn the thing to silent mode (without having to browse through menus). The instant hold button is great as well. I'm glad to have a phone that doesn't have it's buttons pressed when it's in my pocket. My previous Sony Ericsson CyberShot was hell because it was open faced...I had to keep it in locked mode to avoid making accidental calls. Even then, having the buttons pressed drained my battery because the backlight always turned on.

Call quality is excellent, and the phone actually is loud enough for me to hear my caller in pretty much environment. Big improvement over my Sony.

The web browser is excellent. It's near the speed of my PC when I'm on my Wi-Fi. It's also much, much faster than both my PS3 and my PSP. The zooming feature is damn perfect. My only complaint, especially when browsing GAF, is that it doesn't cache the whole screen; when I'm scrolling through posts, I sometimes have to wait until it loads the next part of the screen. The YouTube feature is a godsend as well, it's designed perfectly around the iPhone. Easy to search, automatic fullscreen, and the picture looks quite awesome.

As I've said previously, I'm disappointed with the GPS feature. It doesn't seem to really be GPS per-se, because I sometimes can't have my location determined. Also, the fact that the map isn't preloaded into the iPhone really sucks because it means I can't really use the GPS away from Wi-Fi with a data plan. Is there any application out there that allows for a way around this?

The phone was a bit of a surprise. Coming from my Cybershot, I didn't expect much. The pictures do have more noise and are smaller than on my Sony, and there's really a lack of customization for photo taking. Still, what this phone does marvelously well, is adjust the gain of the picture the match the ambient lighting. I've never (personally) seen a phone that does this so well. The lighting comes out looking almost exactly how I see it, which is pretty great. My Sony really had trouble in this regard. Needless to say, I'm happy with the photo capabilities of the device.

The iPod feature works perfectly. I can't judge on the sound quality yet, since I haven't hooked up my good Ultrasone headphones to it. The headphone amp in the iPhone provides a great deal more wattage than the iPod. I'd say it's at least 50% louder, so this thing shouldn't have trouble driving some higher impedance headphones. I'll test my Ultrasone HFI-580 on it tonight to see if it at least holds up to my 5.5gen 30GB.

Any recommendations as to software/games are good purchases?

how about you take a screenshot for us, proving you have the settings i showed you on, your volume for notices up, and the vibrate option on? What email client are you on? Is it set up to POP or IMAP? Is your iphone set up to fetch the email? Does the email client have a push service?
The problem here is that basically I came to the wrong place to discuss these things. You all, rightfully, have no idea what the hell I am talking about because Japan handles it a tad differently. Hopefully they can get shit organized a bit better, and up until then I will just have to keep checking my phone a bit more than before.
Frankly, I don't get why you wouldn't want your mail instantly and have learned to take that for granted. We'll see how this works out.

Frankly, I can't understand why you need it immediately. Do you work in a job that requires you to be on top of your e-mail that much? As someone else said, if it's a time sensitive issue, then e-mail probably shouldn't be the method of communication. How often do you have the e-mail client on your computer set to check e-mail?

Also, as I said on the previous page, get a Yahoo account, set it up on your iPhone, turn push on. End of story.

Holy crap I learn new things all the time. I'm blown away at the predictive spelling. The keyboard requires zero precision to use. Awesome!

Also, looks like I'll be using the iPone headphones that came with it. First off, I never realized there was a microphone on the headphones...that'll be quite useful. Second, wow it acts as a remote control for my music.

I'm not an Apple fan at all (in fact, I hate their ridiculous pricing schemes on laptops and the like), but holy damn they really know interface. I've never seen such ingenuity and user friendliness in a device. Bravo Apple! Bravo.

Still not getting a Mac. I have zero use for OS X. I'm a comp eng. and I'm damn comfortable in Windows. =\

I need mah games

edit: I just got a call while listening to music. The music was playing and faded as I got the call. Pressed the button my my iBuds and talked hands free. After the call ended, the music faded back in. I've had a big grin on my face for the past minute. :D

Wouldn't you want your SMS the moment they are there? Same concept, isn't it? The idea is to instantly get information to someone. I dunno, you don't make phone calls here, you send emails. It's just a lifestyle I got accustomed to that now I have to tweak. I'll live, but I'm just confused at the moment.

I just rebought the iPhone yesterday and so far the battery life still seems poor. 4 hours of browsing over wifi and a bit of music has brought my battery to 20%. Maybe it needs some more charging cycles? Someone give me some encouraging words pls :(

Do you have to do anything special for yahoo push to work?
I had totally forgot they even offered push, so I just set it up... and my messages sure as hell aren't arriving instantly. Do you need a new account? A special iPhone account?

oh weird
ok the second and third tries worked

time to set gmail to forward to yahoo!

I don't know if people understand RK's frustrations, but there is no widespread use of SMS in Japan. People get special e-mail addresses with their phones and people message each other that way.

The iPhone seems unable to imitate what 99% of phones in Japan do on that regard; that is notify RK when he receives an e-mail as if it were an SMS via audio and vibration.

Can he use any email account or just the one he got with his phone?

Only the one you get on your phone is built into and integrated with the firmware. With other phones, you have to check your mail with the built in browser.

It's better to use cellphone e-mail because they're built with special spam filters in mind and occasionally can't receive email from PC e-mail accounts.

I feel people are exaggerating or having some placebo effect as it's barely gotten better with my phone.
Actually, I think even that small increase that I see is just in my head.

SMS has and has always existed since it came about in the cellular network. Email has existed with the internet, which only recently have the cellular world and the internet converged. EVERY mail application on a mac or pc does the same thing, they FETCH from the email server.

Blackberry users pay for PUSH service. Where the email will hit their servers, and theyll push the email to your cellular phone. If you want instant email, get a service that PUSHES emails to your iphone (because the iphone accepts push data).

End.

wow that seems really strange.

All of this was just like me. :)

I'm even liking iTunes now.
I'm amazed.

I used to like iTunes. Now that it's become bloatware, I hate it. Takes like 10 seconds to boot up, and it sometimes pauses for like 5 seconds if I manually switch songs.

Yeah I think so too. I have a feeling that the battery indicator stays full for a while longer, but then just plummets after that. This afternoon I had maybe 3 minutes between the '20% left' and '10% left' messages.

Oh yeah, it's huge.
I probably would dislike it if I actually used it to play music.

It's simply my phone syncing and music organization tool.

What the fuck is wrong with yahoo.
I'm trying to set it up so my gmail forwards to yahoo and yahoo pushes to my phone.. and then setting the outgoing server to gmail on my phone so when I reply it comes from my gmail account.

When I go into settings on the phone, and turn off yahoo smtp.. or delete the server. and then go back it automatically resets.. o.O

The system actually works quite well and I find it vastly superior to SMS. :)

Well, it essentially replaces SMS, without the limitations of that format. But the system is NOT the standard in the vast majority of the world, but RK was going off on those of us trying to help him as if it were. The message on his phone is clearly some kind of hack from the carrier, and it's up to them to continue with it and add a tone and vibrate function to do what he wants.

Or, go with a Push e-mail account and be done with it.

4 hours of browsing on wifi?

That is going to kill the battery on most phones. I can get close to 5-6 hours of phone/internet usage on 3G and edge before my phone craps out. And I don't think many phones will give you substantially more time than that.

And it isn't a placebo for me. I posted my usage time and standby time a page ago and they were what I expect from a smartphone.

Guys,

I have a new iPod touch.

Can anyone explain if there's a way for me to download a map of Vancouver so that I'm able to browse when I'm not connected to WiFi?

An iPhone without a data plan is a mistake, as I found out. The ability to use ALL of the features (GPS, web browsing, apps store, web apps, etc.) ANYWHERE is worth the price of admission. I have wifi at home, too, but sometimes, when I was in a corner where wifi was weak/non existent, it would use Edge data without me knowing, and you guys know that the pay-per-use rates are absurd. I just felt like I was severely limiting my phone by not having the data plan. Why have all those sweet features when I have to restrain myself?

I feel people are exaggerating or having some placebo effect as it's barely gotten better with my phone.

I agree, I don't have 3g, and keep bluetooth/wifi turned off until I need it and I haven't noticed better battery life. It just hasn't happened. Which sucks, cause I HATE having to carry my charger cord to work. If I forget it there on a Friday, I'm dead.

What kind of usage stats do you get before the phone gives you a warning?

I posted my stats yesterday. I got close to 6 hours of usage (pretty much just phone calls and safari) with 32 hours of standby before my phone crapped out. I thought that was excellent for any phone's battery. And the battery was pretty average for me before the update.

Nope it's not possible unfortunately.

Wahahahahaha. I was bored the other night and tooling around with my iPhone and my mom asked me what I was doing. I gave her a walkthrough of everything the iPhone can do and she was BLOWN AWAY. I think she really wants one now.

You know, we all bitch about "OMG no picture texts waaah" but honestly, the iPhone is a fucking phenomenal piece of technology. Listening to my mom talk about it to my dad, thinking that they had NOTHING even REMOTELY like this when they were my age, it's amazing. We totally take this device for granted, but it is just exceptional what it can do. It really is essentially a computer in a phone, and when you really think about all the technology that goes into it, it's mind blowing.

Not true, he could just save a jpg of a map and load it onto the iPhone so he can browse it whenever. It won't pinpoint his location but then again neither does a regular map.

Btw, you actually can send text messages with pictures through the iPhone. You just need to email it.

I don't mind doing that anyways because I don't have a texting plan and it allows me to send texts for free.

Not much difference to me. It gets received as a text by the person that I am sending it to.

Granted this is definitely not suitable for someone who texts a lot, but if you only occasionally text it is a nice option (and free to boot).

My main problem is not that I can't send picture messages, it's that my friends can no longer send me picture messages. And by friends, I mean girls. :P

the real kicker is when you try to view the picture in safari, att's website wont let you. :lol

If they made it non-flash for iPhones, I'd have nothing to complain about.
Small hassle, but at least then I would be able see the pic.

You remind me of when I first got my iPhone. Yeah, there was like a thousand moments like these. Big and small touches that just bring a grin to the face. You're also lucky you didnt have to experience it before 2.1, as this update definitely improved the device.

so is there a fairly safe way to go from an unlocked 1.1.4 to 2.1 without having to have both iTunes 7 and iTunes 8 on your computer?
When do you need to have both iTunes 7 and 8 on your computer?

If you're on a Mac then PwnageTools/QuickPwn for 2.1 are already out.

If you're on Windows and you only care about the unlock and not about jailbreaking, then do what I did: update to 2.0.2 using iTunes 7. Unlock/activate/jailbreak it using QuickPwn. Then uninstall iTunes 7 and install iTunes 8, and update to 2.1 using iTunes 8. You'll lose the jailbreak, but you'll have an unlocked 2.1 phone that works perfectly in iTunes 8.

edit: this is all assuming you have a 2G iPhone, since the 3G can't be unlocked.
