Sorry for bumping my old question, but it is driving me nuts. Anyone else have their Gmail being checked automatically every 15 min, 30 min, etc?

Here are my prefs:
Push = Off
Fetch = Every 30 minutes

Gmail Pref:
Select Schedule = Fetch

When I load the e-mail app, right before it does the automatic refresh, I can see the last time it was updated at the bottom. 30 minutes have definitely passed without an update. I can't figure out for the life of me how to get this to work. Arg!
I find that it's not very accurate usually.

When you reopen the e-mail app, before it refreshes, I think what you're seeing is what the screen looked like the moment you closed it. How it appears doesn't continue to change when the app is closed and in the background. Thus, the time it last checked won't be shown at the bottom.

My iPhone will occasionally stop fetching e-mails as well, but a restart of the phone always cures it for me.

Has anyone tried tethering with the iPhone in Canada? Apparently Rogers is now allowing it without any extra fees. I've yet to see anything official but people asking Rogers CSRs seem to be getting that answer. If so, my Acer Aspire One becomes an even more worthy purchase.

You're not the only one. My phone rarely, if ever, fetches automatically at the moment (IMAP on my own server, set to check every 15 minutes), and a quick search found that a lot of people are reporting it as a known issue with 2.1. There was a big thread about it on the Apple support forums and someone said that when he contacted Apple the support guy said that it was a high priority bug that would be fixed in the next update.

Anyway, I finally gave in and bought Beejive. It certainly seems like a solid app and is far better than the others that I've tried. I've got the buyer's remorse going at the moment but that's probably because I'm at home on my computer where I've got good old Adium. I'll be able to have a proper go when I'm at work tomorrow.

Ah thanks guys, at least it appears I am not the only one then. I was going crazy because I did not see how I could have possibly configured the settings incorrectly. I will try shutting down and starting it again as Kung Fu Jedi suggested.

That isn't true for me.
I'll see newly updated refresh times before it quickly starts scanning again.

That is of course when the fetch is working.

I don't think the indicator at the bottom is necessarily accurate. I haven't had any problems getting email from gmail using fetch every 15 min. Now getting push to work with ymail, that i don't know how to do..

EDIT: hmm, i seem to be able to get push ymail to work if i delete my gmail account. But then when I add the gmail back and set it to default, it doesn't work anymore. Lame.

I uninstalled 5-icon dock from Cydia but now I want it back and I can't find it in Cydia.

How do I get it back??

Do I have to add the source into Cydia or something??

Well here is the thing. I got the phone Saturday night and both mail and updates were working on Sunday. Then Monday both automatic mail retrieval and automatic update notification stopped working. I noticed the automatic notification was not working this morning when I was never alerted about the Facebook app update.

Fetch is pretty good on my phone for my work email, but it can be hit or miss for Yahoo!.

Not sure if that is the fault of the iPhone or Yahoo.

There is no automatic app update notification.

Well that is strange. You never got one of those "red dot" notifications on your applications icon? One of the pro-football apps that I used had an update on Sunday, my Applications app had a red dot indicating I had an app update. When I went into the Applications app it showed that football app I had downloaded had a newer version.

I'm reading the Apple forums and it seems like the battery saving features may be causing the problem. Like the phone is going into battery saving mode and doesn't do any fetches as a result. Some people on there are saying that if they plug their iPhone into the wall it starts fetching again. Now that I recall the last time my phone fetched it was plugged into the wall.

It only checks if you open the App Store. You likely opened the App Store and left it without updating, so it put the notifier there.

Maybe that is the case, I don't really remember.

With my other problem I feel like shouting at my phone as if it were a pregnant woman "PUSH DAMMIT PUUUUUSSSSSHHHH!!!"

Alright, I gave in and bought Japanese:

It's a very, very solid dictionary app. The only thing I'm not so sure about is that the non-search interface is very geared for "Go get Japanese" as opposed to being language neutral. The only reason that bugs me is that I've used Word Tanks for years, and they're oriented in the opposite manner.

That said, it's been a terrific tool for studying Kanji since I got it. The only complaint is there's a known (and pleasantly published) bug that prevents you from saving your own saved lists of words. Luckily that has already been patched and apparently a built-in flashcard player will be included at some point in the future.

I couldn't not support someone who put that much effort into this. $20 is a fair price, given that my WordTank V80 Touch was like $250

EDIT: Oh yeah, you can actually use the Chinese character IME to input characters to search, but note that even though it somehow has unicode equivalency, not all Japanese Kanji are recognized by it (frustrating at times)

Did you actually uninstall it?

I think it puts the notifier on the App Store when you sync too. I never open up App Store and I get the notifier all the time.

I'll also get app update notifiers without opening the app store, and not from syncing.

They just pop up every now and then, I do notice the updates are a few days old when that happens, which means I'd see them sooner if I had opened the store app earlier.

Nice, thanks. I was having trouble zooming in on the page numbers using the Safari browser.
Here's a tip for it once you're in a thread, to skip to the bottom of the page without doing the iPhone thumb shuffle, hit the name of the thread at the top and it'll do it automatically.

Did this get added recently? or did I just miss it? I thought I had tied that before

The kanji screen on the screen looks good. Very well laid out. The rest, while the presentation is good, eh I'll save my money and stick with Wedict for now. :P

How does the iPhone handle contacts that are in my phone when I plug it into my computer? Is it backing up my contacts automatically or do I need to specify it to sync under iTunes?

Edit: I don't use any contact program on my computer.

It also does it if you sync with your computer and iTunes has recognised an app update.

By default it should be set to sync contacts both directions between your computer and phone. And when the phone does a back-up they get saved that way as well.

Had to be recent, or else I've been missing it for weeks (or whenever the app launched)

you've been missing it for weeks :)

I would still love a native app as then we could post from it without being booted to the normal Gaf page with all the textarea difficulties that Gaf poses to mobile safari.

It doesn't matter whether or not you actually use a contact program, you don't have to actively use the to sync to Address Book or Outlook. Are we still fighting this notion that syncing data with iTunes to the computer is a good thing somehow? Just sync the data and feel good having it in another location in case you have a lousy phone backup. If your contacts are important to you, this should be a no-brainer.

Mobile Safari crashes while I'm entering a URL every single time I hold down the ".com", every single time. :S I've only noticed this in the past few days.

I'm not fighting anything. If it backups my info through iTunes that's all I need to know.

Posted!? Flash is coming, finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

http://www.flashmagazine.com/news/detail/flash_for_the_iphone_confirmed_at_fotb/

The Town Hall meeting sessions are usually a great source of Adobe information and the one at this years Flash On The Beach conference was no exception. The session was full of nuggets for Flash users, but the most relevant piece of information for others was about Flash Player for the iPhone. Upon a direct question from the audience, Paul Betlem for the first time publicly confirmed that Adobe is actively developing a Flash Player for Apple's popular phone. He said (not direct quote) "My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it's a closed platform." He noted that Apple makes all the decisions, so in other words, the ball is in Apple's yard at this time. If Apple says yes, Adobe will have the player available in a very short time.

After an interview with Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayan, the rumour mill got into high gear. Now we know that the Player exists within Adobe. Apple may have many reasons for not allowing Flash onto the iPhone, but if anyone has a good shot at getting their technology into the device, it would be Adobe. There were several other nuggets in this session, but we'll get back to those in our FOTB conference reports.

Apple better not drop the ball on this one!

:tears hair out: :)

The mobile CAG site is very functional and you can log in and post straight from it.
The only thing it's missing is the quick drop function.
He'd have to work with the web admins for all that I suppose.

OK, considering how horribly unreliable backups are being reported to be, don't say you weren't warned.

Kung Fu Jedi said:
Um... not so fast. This has been known for sometime, but it's still up to Apple to actually allow it on the iPhone, and there has been plenty of resistance there to not do so. There really isn't any new news here, unfortunately.
Considering how much I don't miss Flash ads blocking my reading and that I'm still on a first-gen iPhone, some of us consider this a god-send. Most legitimate Flash content is a pain to view and navigate on a mobile phone anyways. If Apple were to include it, I would demand an option to disable Flash.

What exactly is he being warned about? iTunes does back-ups and it syncs with is address book, that's what he wanted to know.

Sorry, I'm still programmed to assume that when people ask "doesn't it do a backup of my stuff automatically?" and seem to suggest that they didn't go through the initial configuration steps when they first plugged in the phone for its first sync, that means they're trying any possible method to not rely on using iTunes syncing or didn't RTFM. Go read a bunch of pages back, there was a huge hullabaloo about how iTunes syncing is the devil incarnate or something. And my work with Apple phone support back in the day of people crying because they manually added music to their iPod and it crashed without a computer backup also doesn't help my opinion of his question.
But I shall slap myself on the wrist nonetheless.

I just moved to Germany for a few months. Can I unlock my iPhone and use a pay as you go SIM card on it? Is it possible to unlock the phone without having service? Sorry if this has been asked before or if it isn't allowed to be asked, I just couldn't bring myself to search through 231 pages.

Reports today say that Apple has dropped the NDA for developers on released software. That should make some devs pretty happy. NDA remains in place on unreleased features of course.

Apple better not drop the ball on this one!
that doesn't say much and if anything, is reaffirming that Flash isn't coming.

It's also about the same thing Adobe has been saying since the iPhone SDK was announced so many months ago.

Don't get your hopes up for flash, folks. (And as so many have pointed out, the way Safari struggles with the web as is, you sure as he'll don't really want Flash there as an extra avenue of sluggishness and instability.)

If it's a first gen phone, yup, you can.

This is good news and an indication that Apple may be taking all this recent developer criticism to heart.

We can only hope that they become more open about app store submissions, as well. By making perfectly clear up front what apps won't be accepted and by loosening some of the rules that have banned useful apps from the store, like Podcaster.

Is there a method that is better than others? I tried using this program that was suppose to automate the whole thing but it would just put it in recovery mode, which would startup iTunes, and then it would just sit there doing nothing.
