i'd disagree - Safari is still as buggy as ever, crashing randomly on pages that don't crash any other time, just, yeah.

i think your memory is flawed, it hasnt gotten more buggy, but it hasnt gotten less buggy. it's just...buggy.

And I still contend that mine never crashes. I honestly can't remember the last time safari crashed. It would have to go back to the 1.1.3 or 1.1.4 update, when they fixed a lot of Safari bugs. It's very stable for me.

You can't be doing enough browsing with Safari if you can honestly say it has never crashed on you. I absolutely love the phone, but the Safari crashes are pretty terrible, the only minor saving grace is it opens back up to exactly where you left off.

So you have maximum battery life. Every single person I've ever talked to about this phone told me to do that. I did it, and I have excellent battery life. You should always let your phone go through complete cycles when possible.
Apple recommends you do this once a month:

"Use iPhone Regularly
For proper maintenance of a lithium-based battery, it’s important to keep the electrons in it moving occasionally. Be sure to go through at least one charge cycle per month (charging the battery to 100% and then completely running it down)."

http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

I do see a difference when I do this. Sometimes the battery meter gets out of whack - I've seen it stay at a "full charge" for almost 24 hours, only to immediately drop to a 20% charge with the warning message. After doing a charge cycle the problem was fixed.

I didn't say it never crashed, only that it's been so long since it has, that I don't remember the last time it did. And I do plenty of browsing on it, including here on GAF, and posting using my iPhone.

I guess I'm just lucky.

Essentially all running a lithium battery down accomplishes is the recalibration of the digital fuel gauge. Without this occasional recalibration, you'll experience what you experienced. Its the same with laptop batteries and such as well. I believe Battery University says it should be done every 30 cycles or so, which likely translates to about a month of heavy use.

It doesn't prolong the life of the physical battery however, and running it down ALL the time is bad for a lithium based battery. For the most part, short "top ups" are the way to go, with the occasional full recharge for a calibration of the gauge.

Okay, so on the new facebook app, which is awesome by the way, everytime i accept a friend request using the phone, they show up twice on my friends list. When i check the facebook website they're only in there once, but it dupes them on the iphone app. Anyone else have this problem?

Right, I do the same thing with my MacBook as well about once a month.

When I said I "do see a difference" I guess I should've been more clear - the battery life (as reported by the gauge) is more consistent with the battery life that I'm used to because of this recalibration. So it doesn't hurt to do this now and then. Seemed like some people here thought you shouldn't do this at all, so I posted the link to show that it's not harmful to do this once every month or so.

Also I think when most people report on their "battery life" they are going by the reading on the gauge and how quickly they see it drop (or how it DOESN'T drop, like in my example), rather than just going by how long it takes their phone to completely die. So by doing this recalibration it will help people get better readings, and have a better idea of how much battery life they really have. But yeah, letting the battery die constantly is a bit much.

Go on Cydia and download backgrounder!
It's awesome (and probably a battery killer)
When you're on an app, hold down the home button and it will say "backgrounding enabled"
I'm using it with beejive right now and its fucking amazing!

I went down to my 11:20am appointment at the genius bar. I told the guy I already DFU'd it and restore'd it and I was still getting that activation error.

...but like every customer service person I've met, he chose to go uh huh, uh huh and the proceeded to tell me he was going to run a restore on it before even looking at the error msg. So 30 mins later (I don't know why it took 30 mins, but somehow it did) all the restore and updates were done and he plugs it into itunes and guess what? It gives the error and he goes "dude, you're getting an error when you try to hook it to itunes" and I'm like YES, THAT IS WHY I AM HERE %#@^$@^$@^@$ so after discussing with all the other workers and coming to a decision that no one in the store had ever seen this error before and has no idea what caused it or how to fix it he just decided to give me a new phone. He changed out the sim card to the new phone, turned it on, plugged it in, and this one was fine.

an hour and twenty minutes later I'm finally leaving the store with a working phone.

Damn you Scamco for bricking my iPhone with your gaming goodness!

Holy crap. I'm this close to jailbreaking now. This would let me use last.fm streaming + safari :o

the only glitch so far.. is that beejive constantly has a badge displayed on the icon.. when you get messages it updates.. but even if you dont have any messages it displayes 0 which is really annoying

im trying to figure out the badge utility of ericas utilities but i dont know how to use it.. doees anyone have any experience with this?

Same as usual.. it will log you off.
And then when you log back on msn on your phone it logs you off your computer.
Same with xbl/etc..

Yeah you should.. it's really nice.
So far I haven't heard of an issues with the AIM application.
The beejive glitch doesnt hamper any usability.. it just makes a constant badge appear on the icon. I moved it to the top right hand corner of the the screen so it wont be as eye catching. :lol

ok, as of yesterday im having some issues with my phone, I am on an unlocked/jailbroken 1.1.4 iphone

here is what my itunes sync looks like

iphoneproblem-1.jpg

note: the last part of my phone's name might be offensive for some, so i black bar-ed it

basically for some reason my itunes is not syncing my music, and now the space what was used for music is now being used for "other" but there is nothing on my phone

my phone's GUI reflects the same when i go to the general section under settings, 0 songs, but only 1.26 GB free

anyone else had this issue?

how should i go about fixing this?

Use WinPwn/QuickPwn to get yourself out of the ghetto and onto firmware 2.1?

and im perfectly ok with doing that, as it was something i was already planning on...yet i dont know if that will actually fix my current issue

Considering the purchase of a 2G iphone on eBay, and wanted to make sure of something -- all 2G models can be easily unlocked through software, yes? I don't know if I should buy one that's already unlocked or if any of them will do.

Yeah, doesn't matter a bit.
Only takes 5 mins via software.

If you want to buy one, ping me via PM. Safer to get one from somebody on the forum who you know than some stranger on the Intertubes - right?

You'll have to do at least one DFU restore, so since it will require a bulldoze-and-pave on your phone, it will definitely fix the problem.

Yup. I can almost force Safari to crash by scrolling through a page while it's still rendering.

I think someone mentioned how to quickly jump to the bottom of a web page without the mindless scrolling/flicking. How is this accomplished?

When in the GAF app, hit the title thread, I believe it's surrounded in gray.

OK need some help.

I'm gonna be upgrading from my current contract in the next month (Vodafone, UK).

iPhone via O2 or Blackberry Bold or W980i are the choices on Vodafone

Few questions,

1. How fast is the iPhone operating system relative to the Bold, W980i and Nokia 6300?

2. Is Safari mobile the superior browser relative to everything else available right now? I know a couple of people with an iPhone 3G and have never seen it crash. Is crashing really that common when using normal sites like Google(finance), wiki, bbc, cnn, Reuters?

3. Apart from Music, why should I get an iPhone over the Bold?

4. Will A2DP Bluetooth stereo streaming be coming to the iPhone, officially?

5. Stupid question - will Safari work via GPRS/3G when Wi-Fi is not available?

6. How good is the sound quality on the iPhone relative to a SonyEricsson Walkman Phone?

7. I know the iPhone has an application which identifies music over the mic. Is this via the Gracenote database and is it free?

8. Finally when is the next iPhone version coming out?

What's the point of using it with Beejive, since the program supports pushing?

It doesn't support pushing though.
It sends you an email when you get a message. Which is definitely better than nothing.. but it's hardly ideal.

When it runs in the background the message come to your chat window in the program and displays a notification badge on Beejive icon.

Backgrounder is really great, but it's actually pretty glitchy.
There is the permanent badge glitch I mentioned.. but it also almost always turns off after 15 or 20 minutes. You can't leave a program open for the whole day.

Is backgrounder more stable than the default multitasking? iPod+Safari is a crashfest for me. For one, pages don't load right, and then on top of that, Safari will crash even more than it does by default. My gf dloaded backgrounder, but I've been tentative. I don't need more crashing. PEACE.

Umm, I don't know.. I haven't tried it on either of those apps.
But I'm gonna say no. Though, I guess I'm lucky because Safari rarely, if ever crashes for me.

Though sometimes I get the thing where the iPod is unresponsive for a few seconds.

1. Not sure. The iPhone OS is fast. The only time I notice slowdown is when loading certain games. Looking at you Star Trigon.

2. Yes, Safari is superior to pretty much everything else. Crashes aren't that common with me but YMMV. I turn off my phone and clear the cache regularly and that seems to make a difference when crashes start to occur more frequently. Others will tell you to stay clear of image heavy websites or sites that are likely to overwhelm the browser especially if you are multitasking. Your main concern should be flash support for those sites you mentioned.

3. Superior user experience and developer support. To be fair BB has good developer support as well but the ease of use with iPhone pushes it over the edge (disclosure: I use a Mac). The Bold is superior if writing email is going to be one of your primary uses for the phone. This is a personal opinion but writing email on the iPhone keyboard is not a pleasant experience. I can type faster on a BB keyboard and I hate the iPhone auto-correct software. SureType > All. Also, if tethering is important to you the BB may be a better choice.

4. How would we know that?

5. Yes.

6. Never used a SE phone but the sound quality on iPhone is as good as that on an iPod.

7. Gracenote database? The application is called Shazam and it's free.

8. Next July. Possible bump in memory in January.

Falls apart at high volume levels more than my SE W810i. Bass is a bit muddier. I haven't messed with the EQ, though. I don't think I was running the default EQ setting on my 810, so I might be biased there. PEACE.

Backgrounder was just updated. it got ride of the 0 value badge glitch!
Looks like Genesis4iphone got released too!

Is there anyway i can use my own picture as a dock background/wallpaper?

I am not talking about the wallpaper option which you see when click the phone "on" but the actual phone dock background. (3g phone, and not jailbroken)

Nope.

My 3g 2.1 did this when I was trying to install a large app and I killed iTunes and powered off the phone.

Ended up having to restore the phone.

Ugh, I'm going through the restore process right now.
:|

I have no idea what happened, but it started to not let me install my own apps because "they were already installed."

Didn't expect to running through this bullshit this morning. :lol

So I have been experimenting with handbrake a bit and was wondering what presets you guys use.

I tried the iPhone pre-set (with sound changed to stereo and bumped up to 160kbps).

Ratatouille came out at 480x208 and 903MB

I tried an experiment and cropped the image (ever so slightly) so that I ended up with a 720x320 file (so that I could wach it "fullscreen" without graininess) and the file ended up being 30MB smaller at 871MB. All audio settings where the same.

Whats up with that? was the act of compressing it what made the file size larger?

What is the downside of keeping the higher resolution files if the file size isn't significantly different? Battery life?

Thought this might interest some people..

I have a 16GB white iPhone that was jailbroken... Got it about 3 weeks ago. The back of the phone started cracking around the camera lens, so I restored the phone back to it's original firmware using iTunes and exchanged it at an Apple store for a new one today without any problems.

Chances are the bit rate was set to be the same. When the bit rate of two videos are the same, ie 1.5 Mb/s, and the file time stays the same, then the memory usage must stay teh same, no? (give or take 30 MB). Since you specify that every second of footage takes 1.5Mb, then that is what the program does. Chances are there is more compression per frame in the higher res version. You may or may not notice.

got it, that makes sense. also if I have a fixed bit rate but increase the bit rate dedicated to the sound I expect that comes at the detriment of the video?

I'm jailbroken and I was wondering if there is an app where I can talk on voice over IP or any other method where it doesn't use your minutes while you're talking??

On the official app store, a program named fring just came out.. I haven't used it but it does support voip.

Hey, I've got my first couple template / simple iPhone native apps going, but I'm suddenly at a loss for what I want to build. It can't be too complicated, because I'm new to Obj-C and Cocoa's frameworks.

Anyone have any ideas for a native iPhone app? (other than a native NeoGAF app. I'm all done modelling NeoGAF for a while)
