Hey, I've got my first couple template / simple iPhone native apps going, but I'm suddenly at a loss for what I want to build. It can't be too complicated, because I'm new to Obj-C and Cocoa's frameworks.

Anyone have any ideas for a native iPhone app? (other than a native NeoGAF app. I'm all done modelling NeoGAF for a while)

1. a google reader app with proper folder/tag support (ability to drill down into specific folders) and a built in webkit browser. you'd make a mint.

2. a proper iMDb gateway with formatting

3. a fleshlight app.

Or an app for movie times that isn't a horrible, ugly purple.

Let me know if you need any artwork :p

Just get Now Playing. It's super awesome!
Seconded. It's much easier to get a quick appraisal of movies with the Rotten Tomatoes tagging rather than Flixster. The Movies app used to be awesome, then Flixster hired the creator. PEACE.

Have you guys used panolab?
It's really fun and addicting, but can get a little slow when you have a lot of pictures.

Yeah, it's pretty awesome. I keep forgetting to try it when I'm out, though; obviously it doesn't work so well on close-up subjects, like around the house.

Does it bug anyone else that mobileme's account names aren't case sensitive?

The only thing that bugs me about Mobile Me are all the people willing to pay a recurring fee of $99 to use it per annum.

well good for you
my ignore list keeps growing

Is there a reason why EVERY SINGLE skype-out call I try to make from fring gets terminated? My country codes are all correct. I have a strong wifi signal. Is this a known problem?

For folks with an iPhone 3G do you have your phone in some sort of case? As in Agent 18 or something similar.

I really like the feel of the iPhone without a case but I'm nervous about it getting scratched.

Does anyone know what codes I have to enter to add more switches to Boss Prefs application from Cydia??

I want to add a Brightness setting to Boss Prefs but I dont know how...

Prepare to be mocked.

I've been caseless since release and the front screen hasn't got a scratch on it, while the back has some scuff marks but overall still looks nice.

Adding people to your ignore list just because they disagree or have an opinion on the most minor and unimportant of discussion topics is pretty fucking lame.

I canceled MobileMe because it wouldn't fucking stop nagging me to change my sync data. At some point, it thought I had two MobileMe accounts with the exact same data and just wouldn't stop nagging every day to switch between the two identical accounts, no matter how often I reset my sync data or re-did everything to get it to stop. Also: Dropbox is an amazingly superior iDisk, and it's free. Apple needs to add some purpose to the service.

The only reason I still have my MobileMe subscription active is because I haven't paid a dime for it yet. They gave so many free days that I'm still on the trial I signed up for on the 11th.

Unless something changes drastically I'll be canceling the service. $99/year for push email/calendar is not worth it (so far thats all I've found useful). I can sync my calendar and I have a feeling that Gmail will add push support eventually. Until then, I can fetch.

Why dude? I'm simply asking how most people on here roll with their iphone? Pocket, case, belt case, etc.

I use an old iPod sock occasionally, or I just go naked.
I wouldn't worry too much about the screen scratching or breaking.. it's a lot stronger than it would seem. But if you want to get a case, I would get one of the skintight rubber ones that come with the thin film screen protector. They are quite unobtrusive and offer a decent amount of protection.

Some people seem to think that because they don't put a case on their phone, no one should. :p

Not everyone thinks the same way, though. I've found the Agent 18 hard case to be the most useful. At least on my OG phone.

Oh the irony. The only reason I saw this post is because I was using the GAF webapp.
I would never ignore someone for disagreeing with me.. that's a large part of what makes message boards fun. There are a lot of posters on GAF, and I'll ignore whoever I damn well please. I asked a question about an odd quirk with a program, and he responded to the tune of, "the only thing that annoys me is the people like you who use it." That's not disagreeing that's being an asshole. I love the fact that GAF has a feature to weed out the people who I wish not to acknowledge for the better of my own experience.

I'm considering snagging an iPhone 3G for someone as a gift, but was curious about software compatibility with older machines...

Anyone here using their iPhone with an oldish Mac? Like say, an iBook G4? How's it work? Are there any serious issues dealing with iTunes on an older version of OS X?

I wouldn't think so, but maybe before you dive in, you should find out if they use itunes.. if it's up to date, etc..

oh and piebaker, i sent you a wonderful PM

Do you really need to talk about your ignore list like it's a fucking privilege to not be on it? Ignore that person and move on.

I think you've misinterpreted why i brought it up
I never tried to have it appear that way, at first mention, i blanked it out and included as a retaliation for someone being mean to me. :(

later i was called out on it, and replied, but i agree, it's inappropriate, which is why i followed up through private message.

sorry.

I understand the no case contingent. I have never had a case on any of my cell phones or portable devices (save gameboy advance sp NES edition), But I really like having the case I have on my iPhone.

It is a simple thin silicone skin, the best thing about it is the extra grip that it provides, I find the plastic back 3G iphone to be sort of "slippery" without it.

It slips on and off easily when i don't need it

Going caseless is fine, except you have zero impact resistance. Scuffs and scratches are one thing. Dropping a dense device like this on a hard surface will break it. A simple silicone skin will offer enough dampening for even tile. I should know, I've dropped my phone a few times, and it's been perfectly fine. You can hear the skin softening the blow. The Switcheasy Color is the one I use, and IMO, it looks awesome. I have three of them so I can swap colors randomly. For only $15 a pop, I figured three would be the same price as a Revo2, which I was gonna buy, and the look hella slick. PEACE.

EDIT: And I've never bought a case for any phone. This is the first. I keep all my phones in my front pant pocket, even my iPhone. A case+screen protector is all you need.

My friend has this one that is much nicer than those, the back is just smooth with no logo or weird grip.
I can figure out what brand it is though.

FWIW, the reason I said what I did was because it frustrates me that anyone at all is willing to pay the price for Mobile Me. If people just held out, Apple would be forced to make it free or ad supported. (Or get out of it entirely and just make the service more appealing)

MobileME isn't a new service, it's just an update to .Mac
Which has been around for like 8 years now....
It would never go free or ad supported.

But hey, nearly everything MM does the Sidekick2 did for free yeeaaaarss ago.
And people still diss the Sidekick.

My (caseless) phone has been dropped on hard wood floors and concrete. My wife's has been dropped on the same hard wood floors and asphalt. Both fines are fine. Your phone will likely be safer in a case, but dropping the phone on a hard surface will not necessarily break it.

An app that lets you schedule when your phone is in "silent" mode and when it is not in "silent" mode.

Ooh, nice idea. I doubt it's accessible by API since it's wired to the physical switch, though.

I doubt this is possible, but I'd LOVE an app that would let you quickly toggle battery-draining settings. Right now it takes too many steps and those are located in all different areas of the iPhone's Settings app.

3G on/off
Wifi on/off
Bluetooth on/off
Push mail on/off
Airplane mode (disables everything AFAIK) on/off
and maybe a slider to dim brightness

I'm sure an app like that would be HUGE, I'd even pay for it.
