I doubt this is possible, but I'd LOVE an app that would let you quickly toggle battery-draining settings.

3G on/off
Wifi on/off
Bluetooth on/off
Push mail on/off
Airplane mode (disables everything AFAIK) on/off
and maybe a slider to dim brightness

Right now it takes too many steps and those are located in all different areas of the iPhone's Settings app.

Jailbreak your phone, there's an app that does almost all of these things.

I just ordered this from SwitchEasy.

There are jailbroken apps that allow you to backup text messages. Are those not available on 1.1.4?

What you can do is take a bunch of screen captures of the text message (press Home button + Sleep/Wake button at the same time and it'll save to your camera roll).

Not sure whether that's available in 1.1.4 though, might have been a 2.0 feature.

My Verizon contract's up in 2 weeks. Is this a good time to buy or should I wait out a revision?

There won't be a revision until next July at the earliest I'm assuming (with the exception of maybe a capacity increase? Not sure), so it depends on what you're looking for. What would you do in the meantime if you choose to wait it out, stay on Verizon month to month? I would buy now unless space is really an issue for you.

I'm unsure of AT&Ts upgrade policies but you probably won't be able to upgrade your phone without paying a steep fee earlier than 1 year from when you activate, so that's something you may want to consider.

i could have sworn text messages are saved when you do a backup in itunes...

Restoring your data from a previous method of unlock on a Winpwn/QuickPwn-unlocked device can sometimes bugger the phone (or so I'm told), so it's usually not recommended.
There are jailbreak apps that should help you pull your text messages, though, so I recommend reading up.

Okay GAF, here's a regular problem I have with my iPhone taking photos:

MoC087.jpg

No, not taking random photos of Star Wars characters; but that image chop that's going on there.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is this normal, or am my phone retard total?

You have, and have had for the longest time, the most broken iphone out there (along with costanza). I'm pretty sure this thread has already recommended that you get your iphone replaced, because half the stuff you complain about just doesn't occur to most of us. It's insane, but trust me, you need a new iphone. Go show that to an Apple store rep and they'll give you a new one.

Okay, I'll schedule an appointment this weekend.

I'd be happy with a storage bump, esp. if it's more bang for the buck. Does that seem likely to happen within say...3 months?

I like not having to swap around my 14 gigs of music and want room for movies. A minor update may involve subtle tweaks as well.

If I wait it out, I'll be going monthly with Verizon until the fateful day. I realize I can only get the subsidized phone cost once per year (2 years?) so barely missing a revision would be irksome.

I've had this happen a couple of times. It's something that has happened to others, too: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1435477

Check out this picture: http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll187/ochatesme/25336251.jpg (kinda NSFW)

Google Street View in Maps will be awesome... that's the one thing I was really jealous about in Google's Android phone.

I have that problem too, actually. But it's sporadic. Happened once last week, but didn't happen at all this weekend when I was taking pictures at my girlfriend's niece's birthday party -- and I snapped like 50 photos in pretty quick succession.

So I recently bought a mac, and one of the things I've been looking forward to is developing on the iPhone. I've got a little extra time on my hands and I figured it's resume padding at the very least.

After downloading the SDK and playing around with it, I looked into the Developer Program. I'm willing to pay the $99 fee, but I'm wondering if it is worth the time. What are the odds of acceptance? Last I heard is that they are pretty strict about letting people into this program. I'd hate to waste time coding, and later be rejected.

Does anyone know how Apple is now handling this and if they are beginning to let more developers in. Has anyone applied and been accepted/rejected?

If it helps, I'm a college senior getting a B.S. in Information Science & Technology and currently working at a job developing web applications using primarily perl. I also have plenty of experience with C on my own.

Actually I've encountered that before. It's happened a couple times I've taken pics.

The actual Devs in this thread can speak more to this, but it's not really that hard to get accepted. I know early on Apple sent out a lot of rejection letters, but I think those days are well behind us now, and most get accepted.

It's never happened to me, but that's besides the point. He's had countless other problems with his phone that he's talked about in this thread, so this is like another drop in the bucket. I think he needs to get it replaced.

If emoji comes in 2.2 or a near future update, then thumbs up to Apple for finally reaching out to the Japanese market. If they can't do it via hardware, then get as much done as possible via software.

Are iPhones still hard to get?

Fuck no. Have you even been to http://www.apple.com? Right on the front page is a new way of buying one that says "we have a lot of this shit, please buy one."
You da man. Just didn't want to have to putz around to get one if/when I get one.

I'm in love with the idea of a phone that does my music to cut down on my gadgets, and the iPhone has the sexiest browser and tons of dev support.

...but I have a company phone for free with unlimited data...but the phone itself is SO BORING.

Getting accepted is pretty easy these days, though they have been tightening the reigns. If you build an application and you get rejected you can appeal with your app, and if that doesn't work - simply release it to the jailbroken community on Cydia. Either way you won't waste your time.

Be prepared to forget your perl expertise and get ready to learn objective-c if you want to make anything near a compelling application.

Got my phone replaced.

Pain in the ass though, I get a new phone - they're like "Do you have everything backed up?"

Yes.

Get home.

Most recent firmware isn't on the new pig.

Have to set up as new phone, update the fucking firmware, then do a fucking restore.

Apple, it just kind of works after you fingerbang it for an hour or two.™

God fucking damn it.

Christ, I'm tired of listening to you whine about the iPhone. I had to have mine replaced in the Spring, and it was the most painless exchange I could imagine. Took it home, hooked it up to my computer, and in short order it was EXACTLY like the phone I just exchanged. All the setting, text messages, webapps, etc. It couldn't have bee easier, and I literally didn't know I had a different phone.

You guys reckon if my silver paint is peeling off they'll replace mine, its been there since day one.

And were do I go, I don't have a Apple Store on this side of the country.

Ooh, nice idea. I doubt it's accessible by API since it's wired to the physical switch, though.
Does the API give you access to the volume and vibrate? If Apple is able to set them through the settings menu through software I would hope they give access to them in the API.

ASSEMBLE APPLE DEFENSE FORCE!

Sorry Apple fanboy, but this experience was far from effortless.

Seriously, the iPhone is the polar opposite of the general user experience I've come to associate with using Apple products over the past five years.

If you don't like it, too fucking bad.

Oh and when is this POS gonna get fuckin' voice dial like $30 Virgin Mobile phones already?! What am I paying $60 a month for?!

Apple wouldn't replace the dented Powerbook they sent me; their official line being "We do not cover cosmetic damage" so chances are you're screwed.

Apple, you're just fucked!™ :lol

Maybe you should just sell it on ebay and get one of those $30 virgin phones? No point getting bent out of shape over it if there is something that suits you better.

Maybe once my shitty contract is up I'll do that. Good thing Apple products command a decent resale value.

I'm not sure how it can be anything but effortless. Seriously, it's so easy. Plug it in, and tell it to restore the back-up. What part of that didn't make sense to you or was too hard for you?

And I agree with Phoenix, if the $30 phone fits your needs more, and is easier for you to work with, then why put up with the obvious frustrations that the iPhone seems to give you? Why battle a product you don't like? You should have no problems selling it off.

transfer account responsibilities to someone who wants it. Or sell it as non-contract bound with your early termination fee on top of what you would be willing to accept for the hardware. Or keep it. Or call your friend on it and tell them how important they are to you.

I can totally vouch for everything he said.
I had my iPhone replaced due to water damage. I walked in. The guy took my phone in the back. I dicked around the display computers for 20 minutes. The guy walked out with a brand new phone covered in plastic. I took it home, plugged it into my comp and a half hour later it had all my texts, call log, voicemail greetings, display settings etc... It really was painless. The only thing I had to do was a little bit of waiting.

Read my god damn original post before going all Apple Defense Force on me for fuck's sake!

The replacement phone they gave me did not have the most recent firmware, ergo it would not restore from the backup I previously made with a more recent firmware on the device. Dur dur dur.

Go bitch at Apple fanboy, not my problem.

Seriously... there's a lot of legitimate gripes about the iPhone, but this is not one of them. I've had to replace my first-gen iPhone and it was the simplest procedure ever. The exchange in the Apple Store took five minutes and then I just went home and plugged it in and restored from the iTunes backup. It sounds like he had one extra step - to update to firmware 2.2 (which was released like three weeks ago, so of course it won't be pre-loaded on all new phones yet). Big deal, you click the Update button and wait 10-15 minutes or so.

That's just complaining for the sake of complaining.

I did read your post. I still don't see your issue. Was it so hard for you to tell iTunes to install that newer firmware? Did it take four hours to download on your shitty Internet connection or something? That should have added maybe 20 minutes tops to the process, and you have a new phone that is configured exactly like your old one with you having to do much more than make a few clicks with your mouse.

And the reason any of us are "going all Apple Defense Force" on you is that you do nothing but come in here to post about how shitty the iPhone is an how much it sucks to use, over and over and over again. If it's really that bad, sell it and move on.

Because Kung Fu Dumbass clearly overlooked that part of my post in his rush to be the human cup for Steven Job's pecker to deflect the blows from my Internet shoe aimed at said crotch.
