don't. it's a relatively painless procedure. The main issue is you can't restore your backup so you're starting form scratch and will lose 3rd party application data the first time you do it.
Wait, I'm pretty sure I restored a backup after I jailbroke my iPhone.
I kept all my texts and call log, etc...

The checkmark option is right there on the main iphone option screen in itunes. now, since i haven't had an opportunity to test it, i don't know how well it works but I imagine it's been made to work like the ipod. deselect "automatic syncing" and select "manually manage" on your two (or more) computers.

If you try it out and it works, then I guess you're sitting pretty :)
Hmm, yes, I have that checked already for my home computer.

I always thought that taking it like this to the computer I gave my mother (complete with all my music) would give me the message if I want to sync and erase right away, without even allowing me to get my music.

Folks, the manually manage function is there BUT YOU STILL CANtT USE IT IN ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE PRIMARY COMPUTER TO WHICH YOU SYNC WITH iPHONE.

So, while I can manually manage my library in my home computer, selecting manually manage at work will produce the same exact message telling me I can only be synced with one iTunes library. In other words, it won't let me drag and drop any files without totally killing my sync with my home pc.
THIS is what I had thought.

So it is true, it's just an iPhone thing, and it sucks.

then I stand corrected. I had heard people had problems with this so I just started from new

What? I restored just fine.

EDIT: ah ok.

Just make sure if you use quickpwn, go into expert mode and disable the custom artwork.. also disable everything else except the installed packages.

Then you won't have to suffer through the awful looking pineapple logo when your phone turns on.

Still. It adds unnecessary steps to life. I just want to see the official patch come out, do it up, and that's that. Having to look for and download special things each time there is a patch? No thanks.

I can't think of any good reason why Apple would allow iPods to do this and not iPhone. I bought a song on the Zune store (mp3 and because I had MS points) at work. Added it to my wife's Zune at work. Can't add it to the iPhone. So I have to get home, transfer the file from Zune to PC (or download it again on that PC), then add the file to iTunes, then sync it to my phone. What.the.hell.

But can I use this in the safari search bar?
Hmm... I know you can change the search engine, but I'm not sure if you can get other options apart from yahoo, without jailbreaking. If i find out before you, i'll send a pm.

There is a parms bookmarklet "Takes advantage of Google's Mobilize service - when used, takes the user to a mobile-friendly version of the current web page." But that's just a hack for now.

I'm a little apprehensive bringing up software I've never used but perhaps this software can help you out

http://www.copytrans.net/manager.php

Says it works with the iPhone. You can try using it on one machine or multiple. There's a free version so you can give it a shot without putting out any cash.

Damn that guy is popular. Have you noticed that half the rss feeds in the App store use the daringfireball as an example in their screen shots :lol

Absolutely. It cracks me up when I see it. Instant indie cred :lol

And, when it comes to rumors, he's always very clear when he's guessing at stuff and when he's passing along information from sources. He never had sources when he started but now, man, he seems to have a few Apple engineers feeding him info before the big events.

So if it's glass is it going to have a screen underneath?

Jtwo said:
So if it's glass is it going to have a screen underneath?

apparently not. it's just a hard surface that clicks down. no secondary screen has been mentioned.

anyway, this has been talked about in the apple notebook thread. I don't want to derail the iphone thread any further.

to bring it back on topic a bit, I want to pimp the new version of Byline. It's now a super awesome Google reader app now that it's been updated to 2.0. it has a whole new "wood" based interface and it now supports tags (folders) and has a built in browser.

Also, the price has been dropped temporarily to 4 bucks. if you're a serious google reader user and want offline browsing capabilities and a smoother UI than the webapp, give it a shot. It's seriously awesome now.

Jtwo said:

of necessarily. It could just be an easy way to impliment multi touch tech from the iPhone rd process. I assume glass is a better surface for capacitive touch than a plastic pressure sensative surface. This is just an assumption.

Anyone can tell me if the new PS3 Bluetooth ear-thingy is compatible with the iPhone?
Yes, it is.

No SOCOM impressions from me tonight guys...

The lack of early reviews on this game has me highly skeptical that the issues with the beta were cleaned up prior to the retail release. The primary reason I got the bundle was for the headset...

Headset impressions... good sound, good fit, and I've very pleased with the overall quality of the sound from phone calls made from my iPhone! GET!

Anyone know why Apple haven't fixed the messed up dates on the App Store? Removing the "All free apps/games" was bad enough but I can't even check the individual categories because the dates are messed up.

<---total phone noob.

I recently got the 3g from a relative. Can I get any ATT service plan for it? Do I need data service to connect online or can I find a wifi spot to do so?

I'm pretty sure AT&T requires you to be on their iPhone plans but I could be mistaken.

Weird, I just got one of those today. I'm not as wild as you, though, and just went for the plain black one :p

Good case. It makes the headphone jack a little tighter than I'd like but it still works.

Has anyone bought the "AirMouse" App....looks pretty cool.
Thanks for the heads up. I'm a huge fan of those types of gadgets and have been using a gyration mouse for the past 4 yrs. In fact, I was all set to grab their new mouse today until I saw they had doubled the price, upon finally releasing it, to $99. Sticker shock ftw :lol

As their help page explains, their app works slightly differently from what in air mouse regulars are used (should have read that before I bought it). Apparently it's a limitation of the iphone's accelerometer. Maybe after fiddling with the sensitivity it'll be better, or I'll just adapt, but both the wiimote and gyramouse felt a lot smoother and natural when I first used them. You have to hold a 'screen button' when you want to move the mouse cursor. The wiimote doesn't require this as it simply translates hand movement to the wii pointer. The gyramouse requires this but places it underneath (think of where the B button is on the wiimote - that's it). It works because you can hold that with your lower fingers to move while using your thumb for the clicking at the same time. The air mouse app instead has to place the button between the left and right mouse buttons. It's almost impossible to click any of the buttons at the same time without looking. Pressing the left click allows you to move as well (so dragging is possible) but... I guess I'm just not used to it. It's works reasonably well for now though.

The touch pad feature is actually much better and I'll be using that until the I see some changes with the air mouse. It's a regular pad with left and right clicks at the bottom and a 'scroll wheel'. Sweet.

The biggest problem with the app is that you can't hide the keyboard. The keyboard itself is a great idea but it takes up too much screen estate. Without it, the fully accessible iphone screen would be only slightly smaller than the touch pad on my MBP (not the new multitouch ones). With the keyboard there I can barely wiggle my thumb. It also affects using the air mouse because you have to grip the phone much higher than usual for your thumb to reach the buttons (or maybe I just have small hands). The developers have promised that particular feature "soon", along with a host of others, but really it should have been available at release or in the first update. I won't recommend the app until that feature is available.

Ok I know it's Apple's fault but I wish you could connect the air mouse to a computer with bluetooth. That would be totally awesome.
Bah I want side scrolling as well.

:lol :lol

His name is feared across the land.

what can I say. I must be a wuss since I picked up a case for mine, as well. I've had too many small devices literally fall out of my hands in the past that I want a little cushion for those big drops.

noob question ...is there a workaround to the whole not being able to send/receive txt msgs with pics/video. i just bought one today so im kind of shocked it doesnt have that basic feature....help!

If you jailbreak your phone: yes.

Two snakes :lol

The case is solid, though. It isn't too thick and it fits my style of being extremely unstyish. I completely blow at applying the screen protectors so I'm just going without them. I can't stand the little bubbles that are there if you apply them wrong.

Access to all the buttons and ports.

I think this is more of a 3G network thing than an iPhone thing. My 3G is really spotty when I'm inside certain buildings. I end up turning off 3G all together in favor of Edge in these situations.

Like you said, it doesn't seem to intelligently kick back to Edge of 3G isn't working.

If this is a defect, then I have the same one. I assume it has more to do with the 3G network itself than the iPhone, though.

...that being said: Pandora Radio is fucking awesome...what the fuck.

I'm not sure if you are quite getting what I'm saying. My phone connects to the network, then suddenly disconnects and I have no signal. I have to reset the phone or remove the SIM card to get a signal again. That isn't normal. The problem is more acute when I'm going into an area that has poor reception (underground, inside buildings, etc) but the problem doesn't resolve itself when I'm in an area that I know has good reception. I have to manually reset the phone and/or remove the SIM card to get a signal again because I can't do this through the network settings on the phone.

I hope that's more clear. This isn't normal. I only ever had connection issues when I went underground (BART/MUNI) with the original iPhone. I'm pretty sure this is a defect as the problem has started happening intermittently (as in it just randomly drops my signal even if I'm standing still). 3G or not this is not acceptable for any phone.

Since I'm relatively new to the world of the iPhone as well, can someone explain why MMS simply isn't allowed in a non-jail broken phone? Is it a hardware/software limitation or is it something mandated by ATT?

Thanks, I appreciate it. My MBP's keyboard is pretty much fried, so when I'm on the go, I'm looking for an alternative to lugging around the external keyboard.

But I don't use the MBP too much, so life goes on.

A software limitation.

So since it's not normal/not acceptable for any phone, why did you even bother asking if you're so sure? Just go get it exchanged.

Oh... in that situation I'd recommend it. Well, the touch pad is growing on me :D . Typing will be slow though; you'll have to keep your attention on both the iphone and the MBP screen to make sure you are pressing the right keys (no autocorrect to boot).

There's things I remain unhappy about.

1. Lack of MMS - I mean really, why not exactly?
2. Lack of video recording - In the age of consumer produced media, youtube etc this is just fucking ridiculous. Come on.
3. Lack of proper push email support - This should have been nailed down before the release of the 3G.
4. Lack of Turn by Turn GPS - If Nokia can do it so can Apple.
5. Safari crashes too much - Half the time the page is already loaded and the fucking thing crashes for no reason.

Some things Apple do amazingly well like the UI, but they're also warped in the head and forget about basic shit that should be standard in any phone released these days.
