There's things I remain unhappy about.

1. Lack of MMS - I mean really, why not exactly?
2. Lack of video recording - In the age of consumer produced media, youtube etc this is just fucking ridiculous. Come on.
3. Lack of proper push email support - This should have been nailed down before the release of the 3G.
4. Lack of Turn by Turn GPS - If Nokia can do it so can Apple.
5. Safari crashes too much - Half the time the page is already loaded and the fucking thing crashes for no reason.

Some things Apple do amazingly well like the UI, but they're also warped in the head and forget about basic shit that should be standard in any phone released these days.

MMS, I'm with you on that one. Totally unacceptable and it amazes me that iPhone owners aren't more vocal about the omission. Made worse by the fact that viewmymessage.com is flash based and doesn't work via Safari. Total clusterfuck.

Lack of video recording can be remedied by jailbreaking and installing video recorder or whatever it's called, but yeah... Recording should be a default feature

Lack of turn by turn is baffling because, much like MMS, video recording etc...there are much crappier phones on the market that do all three.

Posted this in the MacBook thread as well, but thought it might be of interest here too. I read a report this morning that says that the iPhone earbuds can be plugged into the new MacBooks/Pros and the mic can be used to record, chat, etc. Pretty simple, but cool feature.

But I have to jailbreak it. What good is the appstore if it is not going to provide these sorts of apps?
There's plenty of other apps that are useful and fun in the app store.

Most of the apps available when you jailbreak are there because Apple limits what devs can do with the phone. Certain things aren't allowed, mostly for precautionary reasons.

No SOCOM impressions from me tonight guys...

The lack of early reviews on this game has me highly skeptical that the issues with the beta were cleaned up prior to the retail release. The primary reason I got the bundle was for the headset...

Headset impressions... good sound, good fit, and I've very pleased with the overall quality of the sound from phone calls made from my iPhone! GET!

I just got the PS3 Bluetooth mic but my iPhone can't seem to detect it. I will enable the BT option in Settings then it'll start searching for a device and of course, my PS3 mic is ON but it won't find anything. I don't seem to be lucky with these things as my Jabra mic was not detected either. However, the PS3 sees those device w/o any problems.

Any hints? Thanks

EDIT: Just found out the "discovery mode" of the headset... yay for noob :lol

Have you set the mic to "discoverable" mode?

I don't see the big deal really with no mms. I think i might have sent like 15 picture messages total in all the years i've had phones that did it. And getting a package that includes mms is more money a month usually so if everyone you know has either an iPhone or a blackberry (or some other phone that gets email on it) and you send a picture by email, it's actually way better. You don't have to worry about how many messages you sent and you're not paying for a service you might barely use. I personally like sending emails better than picture messages so that's why i'm not vocal about it, don't know about other users.

It isn't about what I prefer to do. It is about that moment when some hot girl has taken a picture of herself, half (or completely) naked with her cell camera, and you have to explain some overly complex method for her to get said photo to you.

Guess what, other people use it A LOT.

That, and what the above person said.
I too have had that discussion.

THAT sucks and has happened to me a few times.

Girl sends picture....
girl - "So how did you like that picture? Did it make you hot?"
Me - "Well, I have to go home and look it up on my computer, so I will be getting back to you in about 3 hours."
Girl - "What kind of crappy phone do you have?"
Me - "...."

Just because you don't use it much doesn't mean others don't. When I first got my 3G, viewmymessage.com wasn't flash-based and I could view pictures just fine through Safari. While not ideal, it was an acceptable work-around. But sometime shortly after the release, AT&T made that site flash-based and now it f'n pisses me off to no end. There really is no excuse for this.

And yes, it really sucks when it involves girls.

Hey, is it just me or is the iTunes Store being really bitchy? As in, slowing down the entire application, thumbnails not loading, features breaking, stuff like that.

Maybe everyone missed the part where i said "That's why I'm not vocal about it, don't know about other users."

Fuck, I wish my biggest problem was trying to get half naked pictures from chicks over the phone.

why the fuck did I have to grow up :(

I suppose the number of girls who take naked pictures of themselves with their phones really drops down a lot once you get around 30.

Yeah, it was a bummer taking a picture of my gf with our new dog this past weekend, having a flood of people texting me for pictures and me having to tell them "uhhhh go visit my blog!!"

I can understand the 'I don't use MMS' crowd, because I myself wouldn't really use it a great deal.

But I do think it is an unfortunate omission.

It is such a basic aspect of so many mainstream phones that it really should be a part of such a full-featured one.

I unwittingly dropped my iPhone while getting out of my car this morning... it went face down on the pavement and shattered the upper left portion of the screen. What are my options? I have a Genius Bar appointment for tomorrow...

you can send a picture message to someone it's just a little extra work.

I have a 2G. My cousin is buying it from me for $250. I'm eligible for an upgrade @ $199 for the 3G. How much will I end up paying in total for the upgrade up front? I know there are extra fees and such...

While people talk about phones with no MMS being dated, I'm wondering who the hell has a phone without e-mail.

I was about to reply me but I didn't realize my phone even had e-mail..lol

I don't have a data plan anyway so it would cost alot to check it.

Not just that, but the majority of phones I see people use, don't have easy access to email, and if they do, it's probably text only and probably cumbersome to check.

This isn't Japan where everybody is emailing each other. Most everyone here uses SMS and MMS texting to reach others instantly. Their phone will buzz, they'll check their message, and maybe reply right away.

The average user's phone has a camera, but the average user's phone probably doesn't alert you instantly of an email you've recieved with a picture from a friend.

It should just be the $199 plus the $18 fee to upgrade your phone, and taxes. Definitely less than the $250 you're getting from the old one.

err? 95% of America? only ppl who wud ever need emails on their phones are managers, CEOs, and professors.

Er, I wouldn't go that far, but yes, most of Americans don't have functional email on their phones.

They can text though, even the most basic of phones can do that.

Thanks for responding. Couple more questions:

My iPhone is jailbroken. I want the data transferred to the new one, but I'd prefer not to have it done in the store. can I do it myself?

Also, does the new iPhone use SIM cards and, if so, can it be used in another ATT phone like before?

Create a fresh new backup of your phone on iTunes.
Restore with new phone.

Yes, it has SIM cards and it can be used in any phone.
Located at the top of the phone.
See the pinhole? You need to push into that with something.

1. MMS is usually included in unlimited texting, AT&T may of course be different because their plans are insane ($15 for txt and it's not even unlimited?)

2. It's not a big deal for you, but it's a big deal. It's a standard of cellphones now, and people use it. I don't use heat in my car ever, I think it's thick and unpleasant, but I recognize other people can't deal without it and a car without heat is ridiculous. This is the same. It's ridiculous.

I get my emails on my phone. The other day as I was driving to school from my home, my phone beeped. It was an email from my professor stating class was canceled.

There was no way I would have known unless I got email to my phone since I was already on my way to class.

I hate these "I don't need it so no one else does" type statements.

Ok quick question i have a blackberry pearl but i want to upgrade to an iphone, is there a way to get the iphone without having to get the iphone plans? will i need to jailbreak it to keep my current plan because i dont really care about having internet all the time.

Will it back up SMS messages?

Not to derail, but a friend of mine has the new Blackberry Bold and showed it to me last night. Wow, it's really nice, even for an iPhone convert like me I found myself drooling over it a little.

It's not too big?
The looks seems pretty nice, but in all the photos the javelin(?)/miniBOLD/new curve seems like it's much sexier.

I had a pearl for a tick before I got a launch iPhone and loved it. Blackberries are VERY nice.

Yeah the Bold looks awesome, I know a few in my classes that have one. I'm interested to see how the Blackberry Storm (their touch screen model I think) turns out. Apparently it's supposed to be out later this year.

It's by far the most compact full-keyboard phone they've made so far, and the keyboard and OS are leaps ahead too. Really nice phone, I can't believe I actually found myself feeling envious. But then I stroked my iPhone and played Bloom for a bit and the pain went away.

I hate to do this, but since I haven't had a touch for a couple months:

what great apps on the store or big developments have I missed? except bloom, I jumped on that as soon as I heard the word 'eno'.

edit: great, safari on this thing still crashes at a ridiculous frequency :(

Hey guys,

I don't mean to intrude, but I just wanted to give a quick shout out for my new app that just got put up on the App Store. It's a pretty simple 2D high score based game called Snowball.

The only reason it isn't free right now is because I'm currently running a four year old computer, and I had to borrow a friend's Mac to program the game. I'm just looking to make enough money to buy one of those cheap Macs and continue developing games. :)

Thanks for checking it out!

This is just about as stupid as the people who say "The only people who would use a tablet mac are people who think they're in star trek, or doctors."

I use the email feature on my iPhone a LOT and I'm just a dude who works at Trader Joe's. I find it especially useful when I find something nice on Craigslist, and I email a person about it, and while I'm out running errands they can email me back. I've gotten a nice G3 iMac, Power Mac G3, and Apple Studio Display this way.

In fact, for that very reason I wish MORE people used email on their phones, because when I'm like "I wanna buy that shit NAO" I have to wait for them to get home from wherever they are and check their computer, which sometimes takes over a day.
