err? 95% of America? only ppl who wud ever need emails on their phones are managers, CEOs, and professors.
You are forgetting about everyone under the age of 35...

A lot of younger people like the ability to be connected 24/7. Hell my freakin secretary (25) has an iPhone and I have seen people in retail with them as well. They obviously didn't get it for work, but they still find it useful to have email and internet on the go.

I love the luxury of emailing on the go but not sure how frequent bargain hunting illustrates it as a necessity.
I never tried to nail it as a necessity. He said only 5% of americans would use it, and even then only managers, teachers and CEOs. The sole point of my post was I am none of those yet I use email on my iPhone very frequently.

Here, is this better, I also use it for bills, so as soon as my gas or electric bill needs to be paid, I can be notified, and then jump onto the BoA app and pay it from wherever I am?

That sounds sweet. I wonder if there's a Chase app. Mobile wireless banking is a bit scary tho.
It's all on their secure blah blah blah, but yes, it is REALLY sweet. I LOVE being out and about, wanting to buy something, and checking my balance RIGHT THERE to make sure I have enough dough. Or, waiting to see if a paycheck has gone through, or waiting to see if proper funds for bills have been taken out yet, etc. You can check your balance, pay bills, even transfer funds. My mobile banking has saved my ass many many times and I love it sooo much.

And if you're nervous someone would snag your info out of the air on WiFi, just turn the WiFi off and use 3G or EDGE.

Seriously, though, I will never be able to have a phone that's not an iPhone again. The amount of amazing shit this thing can do, from the power it packs to the built in features to the app store, I would die without it. I have an app, where if I see something in the store, I can take a picture of its bar code, and it'll scan it and show me A) all the sites online that carry it and B) all the stores in my area that sell it and C) where the cheapest price is. Holy shit, mind blown.

fix the god damn safari crash bug already!
I don't get too many Safari crashes.

But I want them to get rid of the lag in typing on certain websites (i.e. GAF).

Also, need landscape mode for emails.

The *only* time I get Safari crashes is when it's an image-intensive page. I wouldn't dare go into a thread w/ tons of images unless I wanted to re-create the problem. Playing music while browsing also facilitates the crashing.

IM needs landscape support too - do any of the third party apps support it?

Yes, for example Beejive supports landscape mode for chatting. I personally don't like it, I'm too used to the cramped vertical style :lol

Luckily, I'm at a point where I don't have to micromanage my money but I bank all the time wireless on my MBP so I'll learn to love this. I've got enough auto-billing set up that I'd monitor for overdraft.

As for the barcode deal, I'm frugal so smoke's coming out of my ears right now.

I'm totally a cheapskate (Well, actually, I buy shitloads of stuff, but I'm always looking to pay the cheapest prices, heh!) so I love my bar code app. It's called pongr, and it's free. Normally I'd be in Best Buy, see a DVD I want, and be like, "Oh, wait, can I get it cheaper online?" and check out like, DeepDiscount.com to see. Ponger is waaay better because it searches like, the entire web, plus B&M stores in your area, and then gives you a list of the sites/stores and their prices. MWAHAHAHAHA.

Hang on, I actually had to e-mail people I knew about this crazy, life-changing app. How exactly would it know the prices of B&M stores by you?

If the encryption can be broken on the cell, it can definitely be broken on the desktop since they use the same algorithms for encryption. You have a better chance of someone robbing you and forcing you to withdraw all your money from your bank account than you do an exploit in wireless banking.

You know what blows my mind? That I can transfer photos I've taken with my shitty 4 year old phone to my APPLE macbook by bluetooth with a couple clicks, yet it is impossible to transfer photos in this fashion, nor by wifi, from my APPLE iPhone to my APPLE macbook.

Truly idiotic. Such a high tech device, and you cant do the most fundamental of tasks wirelessly.

On a positive note, that Space Monkey game is fucking amazing, probably the most addictive, well made, and polished game Ive played on the iPhone so far. Such a simple concept, but incredibly fun and great challenge curve.

Honestly, I'm not sure. If I had to guess, I'd say it somehow searches the B&M store's online store availability, but otherwise, no clue. I know stores like Borders and Circuit City have "see if it's in stock near me" options on their sites, but I don't know how pongr would access those and turn them into map points with GPS.

Really? I can. But that's mainly because I took advantage of Air Share's month-long free availability. It turns my iPhone into a wireless hard drive, and I can push and pull any file to/from it I want.

Dammit. Pongr sounds amazing but it's not in the Canadian App Store. Probably doesn't work for retailers and sites up here anyway :( Someone needs to modify it.

Ok, pongr works a little differently then I described. You can take a picture of something's COVER (currently DVDs and games only it appears) and pongr searches a database of images to match it to. OR, with any kind of anything (DVDs, games, books, music, electronics, purses, etc) you can enter in the bar code number manually and it'll find it for you.

However, I'm pretty sure there are apps that scan the bar codes taken with your camera. And I wouldn't be surprised if prongr eventually got an update that did this too. It's still a pretty new program (only a week or two old I think)

I'll have to ditto this, thought its unfortunate that Apple is using the AppStore as a crutch for this functionality. I know why they couldn't do it directly (oh studios how I love thee), but it kinda surprises me that they didn't do a similar implementation to some of these Bonjour applications themselves.

Well, it's not as if Air Share will allow you to wirelessly transfer stuff like iphone photos you've taken to your PC. It's just a solitary file dump living within Air Share.

I have searched a bit and can not find anything close to what I am looking for.

My wife is pregnant and we want some kind of app where she can sync and I can sync with different phones and have the same info. The same dates for appointments and notes of whats going on.

If at all possible if this could be tied to google stuff? If anyone has an idea of the apps or links to help that would be fuckin awesome.

Posting this over EDGE from my MacBook where I would otherwise have NO access.

PDANet is the shit. http://blog.timolthof.com/pdanet-iphone-how-to-guide/

Post app-store I haven't had a reason to re-jailbreak, but this did it. In fifteen minutes I was jailbroken, figured out this Cydia business, and had my iPhone connected over an ad hoc connection to my Mac. This is flipping awesome, and because it's over NAT, it would require DPI for AT&T to figure it out so long as you use typical iPhone-happy ports (22,80)

Wow, that doesn't use the socks proxy stuff.. I have to try that out. I had been using srelay, so I could only get my browser to work. Are you able to connect to MSN and stuff, Juice?

Everything worked just fine. It's simple NAT. AT&T would have to explicitly block that port/service.

I also have Airshare. Please explain to me how exactly I transfer photos in my camera roll to my PC? I'm pretty sure airshare has no access to the camera roll, only a public folder that you create. Hint: Im pretty sure its impossible.

Not to mention you two, who are awesome in answering questions and providing info, don't get me wrong. But sometimes the convo swerves off into "wtf does this have to do with anyone who bought an iPhone".

Not just that, but the majority of phones I see people use, don't have easy access to email, and if they do, it's probably text only and probably cumbersome to check.

This isn't Japan where everybody is emailing each other. Most everyone here uses SMS and MMS texting to reach others instantly. Their phone will buzz, they'll check their message, and maybe reply right away.

The average user's phone has a camera, but the average user's phone probably doesn't alert you instantly of an email you've recieved with a picture from a friend.
And yet they have the audacity to sell the phone here where it can barely function like any free phone with a shitty plan. The amount of time I have to wait to pull down a mail from the server can border on the ridiculous. I love all the conveniences this phone has given me, but it has added a whole slew of inconveniences. A trade with anything, I guess, but some of it just makes me wonder how hard they really tried.

It's too bad the OP is banned. All the thread needs is a summary somewhere so people can easily find information. A running tally of recommended apps. A small FAQ, with links if necessary. That would cut down on most of the questions and frustrations expressed here.

Heh, if I cause or engage in tangents, it's usually because this thread is the closest thing to an iPhone forum (hell, sometimes even a Mac forum) that I have to participate in.

Apologies.

I always like how this thread repeats the same complaints every 3 or 4 pages as new people get the iphone and bitch about lack of MMS :)

Oh, and I used PDAnet this past week at an airport and it was awesome. saved my butt for real with some work related stuff.

I've had the phone since August and I'm still bitching about it. Why shouldn't I? Apple could have an MMS app up and running within a week or two tops. Not that MMS is a major deal for me personally (there are much bigger concerns such as I shouldn't have to jailbreak the thing to record video with it for instance). But here Apple don't want to offer an application that EVERYONE else offers and that EVERYONE has been asking for and why? Because they're a warped company with warped ways of doing things.

The people arguing over the email are insane. It's useful to all types of people, from the ones who want to read newsletters to people who get school updates from professors to people who can't text someone a picture and thus must send it as an attachment in an email isn't of regular MMS, from crippled WinMo phones to still popular Sidekick3s.

Honestly, I'd love to know how you wirelessly access the photos taken on your iPhone and pull them to your computer, because that'd save time hooking up a stupid USB cable to do it. I've had AirShare since it was initially launched and as far as I can tell there is no such functionality.

Yes just as stupid as the people telling us that we don't need MMS support.

Just got my phone today and am having issues getting Gmail to register with the Mail button. I enter all of my info correctly, then the first pop-up reads "Cannot Connect Using SSL - Do you want to try setting up the account without SSL?" and when I hit Yes, it takes me to "Gmail account verification failed - The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the incoming mail server field" and I hit okay. I made sure to Enable IMAP in gmail before hand. I don't see an "incoming mail server field". I just see Name, Address, Password, and Description.

Probably something simple I'm overlooking, but any help would be appriciated.

Might sound stupid.. but you have imap enabled on gmail right?

hey, I never said that you shouldn't complain. I never said MMS shouldn't be included. I just think it's funny when people enter the thread having not read previous pages and talk about these issues as though they were the first to bring them up. :)

It's a thread thing, not an Apple thing.

Ah, ok, I didn't think of that. You're right. Hmm. Maybe in an update they'll add that ability, that'd be nice if it's possible.

What's the best backup tool for the stuff iTunes doesn't save?

Hmm... ok so I can plug the iPhone into the new computer, create a backup, link the iPhone with that computer for syncing (thereby agreeing to erase all the data), and then restore from the just saved backup? What am I missing? Oh yeah, what if I update the phone first (from 2.0 to 2.1)?
