My EDGE phone should be arriving tomorrow, and it is currently still locked. I'm obviously going to have to unlock it.....I'm still not sure whether I will jailbreak it as well. Should I update it to the most current firmware prior to unlocking/jailbreaking? Is there an auto-update feature in iTunes that I need to disable so they don't brick my phone with a new firmware update?

pwnage tool - http://blog.iphone-dev.org/
quickpwn - http://www.quickpwn.com/

These are the most recent and reliable unlocking/jailbreaking tools, correct?

Other questions: is there any downside to jailbreaking? Has anyone's phone gotten more unreliable with unlicensed apps installed?

Ive had my iphone 2 days now and still havent even experienced 3G use yet. What am I doing wrong? All the networks my iphone finds are locked :(

Question: Is there a good pair of third-party headphones for the 3G that have a microphone/iPod pauser button thing built-in like on the pack-in? My pack-ins are busted and I don't want to pay another $30 or whatever for the same piece of shit.

These posts are from three months or so back. My Zune headphones JUST crapped out (3 years, I'll take it. The wiring came loose) and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions, aside from these. Or is this selection still the cream of the crop? Kind of expensive... I'd like to try the button thing this time around.

I don't want to wear the white Apple headphones that came with it.

They would be WiFi networks then, not 3G

wow I'm retarded:lol

turning 3G ON might have helped.. I thought it would just like connect automatically when you were in the right location.

Decided on the UB3's cause they're on sale. I'm not sure I would have noticed a $30 difference anyway, I'm not an audiophile.

Anyone ever get better battery usage than expected?

I have had the iPhone on for 2 days and have about 3 hours of usage, yet the battery is well over 50%.

VOIPover3G (misnomer really, but was made for Fring hence the name) tricks iTunes into thinking that you are on WiFi when you aren't. Haven't gotten it to work yet but it was only released yesterday so lets see if the bugs can be fixed soon.
I saw that and got excited!
Finally, iTunes store over 3G! Can't wait for that podcast update in 2.2.

Oh and this Soulseek app, "MewSeek" is crazy, it actually works well.
I'm not going to use it, but I wanted to see how it would work.

Pretty well, downloaded a couple things, never crashed. Pretty good for anyone that needs it.

I haven't had mine long enough to tell, but I unplugged my iphone this morning and deliberately haven't plugged it back in yet. I've talked for 30-45 minutes on it, browsed and downloaded tons of apps, checked a bunch of e-mail, browsed the web a lot, and other random shiz - I'm at about 50% life right now.

I disabled 3G since I'm using Wi-Fi for now, and I also disabled location-based services since I figure I'll just turn them on when I want to use them.

Which leads me to ask...do the location-based services drain battery even when I'm not using an app that makes use of them?

Is there a way to check usage, or are you just estimating the amount of time you spent on it?

Serious question. I just got my iPhone, so I'm still getting used to all of its features. And is it normal for the iPhone to take approximately one second to open SMS after touching the icon, or is "lag" supposed to be totally nonexistent?

The new walking directions/public transport is FUCKING AWESOME.
Can't wait.

So, just a quick question. I was cleaning out my car's trunk and I found my G1 iPhone. It doesn't have a SIM in it and while I thought I'd at least be able to use it as an iPod Touch it appears I can't do a single thing to it without a valid SIM card. So I've decided to jailbreak it and use it as a PDA to clear up some app space on my 3G. But, do I need a SIM card to jailbreak it? And if not, once it's broken, I can still connect it to iTunes, right? Thanks guys. I'm excited at the possibilities that loom before me!

I've been reading up on the Blackberry Storm lately, it's sounding hot. I hope Apple can ready a new iPhone for mid next year. That 3.2MP camera with autofocus/flash sounds mighty tempting :/

Yes if you jailbreak and activate it you can use it as an iPod Touch. You should have no problem with iTunes.

The Google Earth App is up in the US! Sweet!

Also, my iPhone G1 is now jailbroken. But I have... no idea what to do. I feel like a dick asking questions that I'm sure have been answered, but, how do I install apps and.. where the hell do I find them? I've looked on Google but I can't find a single working link to downloadable 3rd party apps. Help? Also, any recommendations? (Video Recorder would be sweet....)

Edit: Also, I read of an app that "replaces" the power off button on the top of the iPhone, but I can't find it anywhere. That'd be awesome since mine is pretty much worthless.

Cydia should be installed with the jailbreaking procedure (it's like the appstore for non apple approved apps). Check for PowerTools there to do the power off thing or just install BossPrefs.

Standby time pretty much uses no battery for me, I find, so this happens frequently if it's sitting in standby, or if I've just used it like an iPod.

Jesus fucking Christ.

My billing issue from Saturday with AT&T... according to a text message I got, it was "resolved."

IT'S NOT FUCKING RESOLVED, THE SAME PROBLEM IS STILL OCCURRING.

I HATE THIS COMPANY SO MUCH.

i dont understand how my phone just dies sometimes. my phone was fully charged until noon on saturday when i took it off the charger. since then ive had it on and barely used it. sunday night it was at around 50 percent. turned it on this morning to see that it died. what the fuck? it lasts 36 hours going only 50 percent, but takes less than 6 hours to die? im thinking something on the phone is being active but i have no idea what. its lame.

Ooooh man this is gonna be awesome. I plan to make my G1 into a sort of Newton 2.0 PDA type device, and use my 3G as a phone/GPS device (with some games that need the tilt functions...)

Question: What is the difference between SpringBoard, SummerBoard, WinterBoard, FreeBoard, whatever? I know the SpringBoard is what's already on my phone... right? Any reason why I'd want/need the other seasons?

Edit: Holy shit I completely forgot the first iPhone had tilt functions too. WOOOOOW. :lol :lol

SpringBoard is what Apple calls the main menu screen. Summerboard and Winterboard are just programs that play on the name that modify the Springboard. Summerboard was for firmwares before 2.0, so you are going to want Winterboard. dont know what freeboard is since they are all free...

man my phone is going crazy. i had it plugged in for a while and it was stuck at a charge of 2 for some reason. i did a hard reset with home/power and it loaded and now its 44. piece of shit

Seeing as both devices are essentially the same, why don't you use the 3G for everything and sell me the 1G ? Seems weird to have 2 iPhones to separate out different functions.

The problem with my G1 is that it's been dropped A LOT. Every fucking time I'd hand it to someone (or had it grabbed out of my hands, bastards) it would end up on the ground. As a result, the screen has a crack in the upper left corner (Doesn't impair function at all, but it's still noticeable), there are dents and dings all over the case, the "off" button in the top has to be hit pretty hard to work, and most importantly, I think the internal antennae is broken because when I had it going before the 3G, it got awful, awful reception. It gets WiFi perfectly fine, though.

I can upload pictures of it if you're still interested, but... *shrug* without the ability to use it as a phone, I don't know why anyone would want it. (I'd only be using it to clear space on my 3G and for games/jailbreaking, I wear cargo shorts all the time so having two phones on me isn't a problem.) I don't know for sure if the antennae is broken or if it was just the service, but I'd be standing next to someone with the same phone on the same plan and they'd have full bars and I'd have one or two.

Fair enough. I know a few people here who want one, but don't want to sign up to the mental plans we have. Cheers though.

I'm still not sure on how to get this to work.
What step? Do you have problems setting it up in mobile Safari? Or do you have it there, in your bookmarks folder, and it's not working? Look at the comments there for some help. Once it's saved as a bookmark[let] just browse to the site of your choice, call up the bookmarks menu, pick the 'open in new tab' bookmark[let] and see the links get the little icons on the site. Reload the page or use the other bookmark[let] to reset it.

I've been having an issue recently where I don't receive calls (caller just gets my voicemail right away), and I'm having trouble making calls (takes a while to start calling, sometimes just fails). I've tried doing a factory restore, but nadda. Is this an ATT issue, or would it be worth trying to get my phone exchanged for a new one?

Got my phone replaced pretty easy on Sunday. So much for the Genius bar, though. I went there and laid out the details of the problem for the guy. I told him it was most likely hw due to numerous restores having no effect. I didn't tell him I'd jailbroken it, so he didn't know I'd done a proper restore a few times. He kept telling me all he had to do was a full restore and setup as a new phone and it would be ok. Lucky for me, it froze right after he restored it, so I didn't get stuck taking home a lemon that had my data erased.

Sheesh, I didn't get any of their special training, but diagnosing a problem like this isn't rocket science. They need to go easy on that genius label, b/c the people I was talking to were far from it. Nice guys, but not what you'd call real tech wizards. I guess that's the problem with getting someone weened on Mac hardware to actually try and fix a problem. PEACE.

Time has come to replace my iPhone.

Has anybody heard anything out of the rumor mill about a 32GB model coming this year? I can't really wait until next year for a 32GB model, but if they swing one by December I can wait.

I'm trying to block the 3G/EDGE data from my iPhone, going to the unlockit.co.nz site and entering a fake APN might do the trick.

But my question is that, will the iPhone revert back to the original (genuine) APN after a power cycle or some other event? I've heard conflicting reports on this.

edit; How do I backup my current config?

Thanks!

Yeah it is under settings, general, usage.

I can usually get 5-6 hours of usage in a typical day.

What the hell is wrong with you?

Edit: For context, read Pimpwerx's posts on this page. Especially this one.
Well, it's kind of a compliment to the usability of Macs. How many of those guys have to spend time debugging their machines? I never had to take an Apple computer apart. Not when I first learned BASIC on a IIc, and not now on the Macs my students use. But as a PC user, I have spent tons of time in the command prompt/task manager as well as actually under the hood of my laptops and desktops. The troubleshooting process (trying to narrow a problem down to a process or a specific hardware card) is something PC owners have down. I don't think Apple's training program can compensate for years of getting your hands dirty with cards.

Put it this way. On the off chance the phone would not have locked up upon restore, he would have handed the headset to me and sent me home with a still-dysfunctional phone. I would not know until it froze on me on my way to the car, or when I connected it to my laptop to sync. Yet it was clear to me that it was a hardware problem b/c of the proper steps I'd taken before. Yeah, so I took another dig at Macs. I bought joke-telling immunity with this phone. :P PEACE.

Nope, it won't.
There are a variety of IM apps, best is BeeJive, but it's like $15.99.
Just try a few out.

Okay, nevermind -- I found the firmware and the bootloaders on my own. Now when I power-on the phone I get the message "Different sim detected - Please connect to iTunes". It gives me an option to make emergency calls, and I can successfully call my house phone.

Should I connect to iTunes? Is there any chance of this thing bricking my phone?

When you jailbroke it, did you check the option to activate?

There is no activation option in QuickPwn - only Add Cydia, Add Installer, Unlock Phone, and Replace Boot Logo.

After Googling the problem, it seems some experts have advised using WinPwn instead. Of course the problem is that WinPwn doesn't support 2.1 Firmware as of yet, and I have no knowledge of how to restore the phone to its pre-QuickPwn settings -- I assume running WinPwn alongside QuickPwn would probably cause problems.

Others have suggested SSH-ing into the phone and replacing some files, but my PC doesn't have WiFi so I can't really do that.....plus I don't have any idea how to install the SSH apps with Cydia.

Yeah you need to create a custom firmware using the pwnage tool, but I am guessing you do not have a Mac.

try doing everything as shown in this tutorial. you should not get an activation error.

I'm not sure, but you might need to put the iphone into DFU mode to force the restore procedure

I've been through this at least a couple times already, and I still get the "Different Sim Detected" message after I use QuickPwn to unlock the phone.

I just restored to defaults using iTunes 8.0 so maybe that will make a difference this time?
