It just occurred to me how much of an outrage there would be if Apple let it on, people bought it, and then Apple bring out their free one. People would complain that Apple knew a free one was coming, yet they let people buy one anyway. Or something.

Yeah it seems like a lose/lose situation for Apple.

Can anyone explain to me exactly how one purchases ringtones from Itunes for use on your Iphone?? There's instructions in the iphone manual but they seem to be missing a couple of steps... :lol

Is there any simple way to see from the store front which ones can be bought to convert to a ringtone?

When you go to the iTunes Store, if you right-click on the table header when viewing any album or list of songs, there's a Ringtone option (along with Album, Artist, Genre, etc.). This will add a column with a bell icon that will let you know if you can make a ringtone out of that iTunes Store song. Once you've purchased a song that can be made into a ringtone, or have ones that you previously purchased, you can select that song and go to the Store menu and select Create Ringtone. That should open the editor in iTunes to let you make the ringtone.

Can't see it to be honest. If there would be any outrage it would be some snide mutterings about Apple copying features from indie developers. I mean do you really think there would be an outrage now if Apple included landscape mode for writing emails now after people have got third party apps for that purpose? Doubt it.

Supposedly AT&T is announcing free WiFi at Starbucks for iPhone users again, but I've been burned on this rumor so many times in the past, I'm afraid to buy into it now. :lol

The text from AT&T I received about two hours ago:

AT&T Free Msg: Your Apple iPhone now has free AT&T Wi-Fi acess at thousands of hotspots nationwide, including Starbucks*. For info visit www.att.com/attwifi

Does anyone know of a free program to easily make ringtones for the iPhone? I know I personally make mine using Audacity and iTunes but I believe that's a bit too indepth for a friend of mine.

Damn. Now all of a sudden my phone key pad disappears any tme I try and make a call, I'm getting keyboard lag the likes of which I've never seen... Time to do a restore and start all over. 2G > 3G at this point, at least for me... Although the Google Earth app is sweet...once you disable auto-tilt.

I suppose you're right. Same goes for dictionary apps and so on. Mind you podcaster was like ten dollars or something wasn't it?

This won't help if he's on a PC, since he'll still have to do a (small but annoying) hack to have iTunes recognize the ringtone.
??

Worked for me, though I haven't used it in almost two months.

From what I know you can't open images by themselves. If you hold down on an image you can save it and view it later.

You may have been clicking on thumbnails?

...or I just don't know how to do it :lol

Hmm, maybe I am clicking thumbnails. Hard to tell, though. I just know that I was able to do it with the Gallup poll in the PoliGaf thread but not with other images.

if you were browsing using the neogaf webapp, then that's a feature of the webapp itself. it opens a full size version of the pic in a new tab if you tap it.

Yeah, that's what I saw on the tech blogs earlier. I haven't received it yet myself, so I'll believe it when I see it. ;)

I'll believe it when I'm sitting in a Starbucks posting on GAF from it. :D

I think it will depend on how up-to-date Starbucks' WiFi service is. I have been to 2 Starbucks that asked for a login and password for AT&T's subscription service, but the store I work at will detect your iPhone and direct you to a login screen that only requires you to enter your phone number for verification. Sadly, since I'm running on an unlocked phone with T-Mobile I can't get the free Wifi. Obviously they can't detect what your phone's number is, so I am hoping that if I just find someone else with a proper iPhone subscription I can enter their number and be set.

I was in a McDonald's today and it defaulted to their iPhone login as well, so I presume they are on the program too.

So what kind of iphone plans are available for a foreign iphone visitor? Is there such a thing as pay as you go setup for iPhone or data in general?

Basically nothing. If you unlock the phone, you can use a prepaid sim card to make calls (provided you are using AT&T or T-Mobile prepaid), but for data you will probably be limited to WiFi hotspots. There aren't a lot of options for prepaid data plans, I am finding.

AT&T's prepaid service offers something called Medianet, but I can't tell if it is full web access or some kind of proprietary network.

It doesn't matter anyway, because here are the rates:

MEdia Net

5 MB - $9.99

You'd be spending $10 everytime you looked at a thread on GAF. I suppose it might be useful strictly for checking e-mail with images turned off, but beyond that I have no idea what you'd do.

This has probably already been addressed, but I just realized that the Safari browser can display PowerPoint. Is there anyway for the iPhone/iPod Touch to point Safari to PP files saved on the device? I don't want to do that silly image/video conversion thing.

Also I'm using a 2G iPod Touch so no jailbreak. :(

How did you get the powerpoint files on the phone? Unless you're using some 'unsanctioned' process, you'd be pointing the browser at the URL on the web. If you're somehow sync'ing them using some file sharing program - tell the author to open those files using UIWebView because MobileSafari can't be pointed to the file share of an application much the same as your application can't be pointed to the filesystem of the phone.

Lame. :( I haven't saved anything to the iPod so I was just curious. I've only browsed to files that are available online. I suppose I could just upload them myself to a server and just bookmark them.

Was just curious as to if there was an easier way of going about it.

Nah, not really.

This is the same as how there is a free Wikipedia app and a paid one, the only difference being that the free one in the case of podcast downloading is made by Apple. If someone bought the paid Wikipedia app, and later found there was a different one that was free, they'd just kick themselves for buying the paid one.

How is Apple liable for that? It's not an outrage, it's pretty simple - if third parties wish to make an application that was completely within Apple's guidelines, and charge money for it, they should not be rejected just because Apple themselves are making something similar.

Or put it more simply, why are third parties allowed to compete against each other but not against Apple? That doesn't sound anti-competitive to you?

its really simple to make your own.
-select song you want in itunes
-right click, get info
-go to the tab that allows u to set start and stop time
-make it start and stop where u want the ringtone, about 30 seconds in length
-press ok and convert the track to AAC
-now go to the newly created files location, it should be like 300kb or something small
-make sure you can see file extensions, its in the folder options, and change it from .m4a to .m4r
-now add that .m4r file to itunes, and it will see it as a ringtone, done. so easy

Wait, so how did you get the powerpoints on the ipod touch then? Anyway, check out the app store. To start you off on the search look at Files, AirSharing and File Magnet.

As I stated above, I suppose so. I never said Apple is liable, just floating the idea that maybe Apple wanted to be a bit 'responsible'. Again, not really like a large company to do something for THAT reason. And yes, it does sound anti-competitive, because that;s what it is if Apple is rejecting apps on that basis. I was always under the contention that Apple never let it on, not because of that, but more because of some other issue - they didn't even do it themselves, when they could have (ie have them on the Apple store).

:( thanks for the info. In NZ, our iPhone carrier has some crazy fees like data plans that allow you 200MB per month (for over NZ$20). Strangely, the prepay option for data is actually pretty good in comparison. It's something like $1 for the first 10MB on any day, $1 per MB after that, and it resets every day. So it's kind of like 300MB for $30 per month, but you only pay for days you use it.

Even more interestingly, they lock out iPhone owners from this data rate by issuing a specific iphone-only APN. Even MORE MORE interesting is that the APN is editable on the iPhones here, so you can just open it up and use the data plan.

Couldn't you just email them to yourself?

The site given above is easier and also does any file, not just your purchased music:

Thanks to whoever provided that :D

Seems to work okay, but the cutting of the files is not very precise -- it seems to "round" to the nearest second or half second when the final file is produced. The volume on a couple files I tried was a little low as well.

Does anyone know of a lightweight application that will generate more precise cuts and louder audio?

Have you tried Audacity?

I jailbroke my phone for the sole purpose of being able to capture videos, but for some reason my phone refuses to acknowledge my home Wi-Fi network now. It did before. I've hard booted the phone and the router. Any ideas?? I can't pull the videos off the phone without having it connected to my network...

who said anything about purchased music? my method works for all files. and i havent checked that site, but it doesnt get much easier than setting start stop times, converting, and changing file name. but whatever floats your boat. also, using itunes allows you to raise the volume, which apparently that doesnt.

honestly, just do the hard resets with sleep/home button. also keep toggling the wifi. if nothing works i think ull have to do it again. probably with a restore of the whole phone

So does anyone have a workaround for posting on GAF from their iPhone? The site looks and work freaking great - even the real site, not the web application - but whenever I go to post or reply, the text entry just slows to shit and eventually crashes the browser.

WTF? That happens to me too. I've just noticed it recently as my browser has been crashing more frequently lately. It might have been doing that since the latest firmware update for all I know.

Same for me. Every time. I gave up.

this is hardly a surprise. Unlike some of the other apps Apple has rejected, Apple lays it out quite clearly that you can't write a new web browser (using webkit to render pages within an app is not the same thing) for the thing.

I'm not sure why Opera was even investing the time, aside from purely academic purposes.
I hope they release it for jailbroken iPhone since they went into all this trouble to make it anyway.

iToner might be suitable. It's only for the Mac and it's not free, but if that's not a problem it's very easy. You just open it and drop any audio file into the window, then hit sync and it'll convert it to the correct format and copy it to the phone. It gets around the limitation of the length of ringtones as well, so there's no need to trim them.

Yes.

I've had 446 crashes (according to the crash logs) since launch day in MobileSafari.

*golf clap for Apple*
