So far I haven't found a replacement for Google Reader that is actually worth the money.

Does anyone know of a good native app for syncing a Google Reader account? The web app isn't that bad, but having everything loaded up front would be nice.

I found NetNewsWire which is pretty nifty, but that syncs with NewsGator instead of Google Reader, and NewsGator's web site pretty much sucks balls.

Byline is great. It supports folders (tags) is quick to load, has an offline mode, supports starring. it's great.

I also like the playful wood and black gloss theme but some people think it's a bit much.

Other options include Doppler (i can't recommend it) and Gazette (not downloaded).

ok, im on 1.1.4 unlocked/jailbroken with iLiberty

decided to finally upgrade to the new firmware...is quickPwn still the best option?

edit: that took awhile...but i am officially up and running on 2.1 and in the process of doing a restore of my settings to get my contacts/ect back

i had to do the actual restore 6 times before it took it, after 2 attempts i had nothing but a black screen

avg hates quickpwn and even if you shutdown avg it will still block you from running it..so i had to uninstall AVG to even launch the quickpwn exe

the whole press home for 5 seconds, home/power for 10 seconds, home for 30 seconds thing messed up too and that kinda freaked me out a little

definitely more complicated then when i put iLiberty 1.1.4 on my phone but not ultra complex either

vWallpaper is out now for the 3G. Up on Cydia. Allows you to have an image over top the video. Looks cool w/ the right combination.

Ok Safari and its constant crashing is really driving me up the wall. I can't ever just browse a forum for longer then 20 or so replies before it crashes. Does anyone else notice this? How in the heck does anyone even begin to accomplish one of the many things Apple says this phone is good for?

Could someone try accessing the "post your cat pics" thread with the Neogaf webapp or some other photo-intensive thread and see if their phone crashes? If I skip down it seems at any decent rate to get toward the middle of a page it crashes the browser. I did a full restore and even set up this phone as a new one instead of using a backup, hoping it'd help the problem but no dice. I also tried clearing history, cache, etc. This is such BS

As I've mentioned before, I rarely have crashes with Safari, but I have noticed that it is far more prone to them in image intensive threads. Something we've known since the iPhone launched, but it's more stable if I let the thread load completely before starting to scroll. Some of the few times it has crashed is when I didn't wait and started to scroll down.

Yeah I learned to wait for the page to completely load. I won't whine one bit if they call the fix for this update 3.0, heck I'll PAY for it - just please make this usable Apple!!

Ok, my phone has been fucked up for a couple of days and now I'm restoring it.
I'm at the "Waiting for Activation" stage and the guy I talked to from Apple said I should just leave it plugged in until it works. This is fine with me. However, my phone keeps restarting every 5 minutes during this process. Is this a "normal part of the waiting for activation process" or is there something more dire at work?

No, that's not normal at all. Hold Power+Menu until it shuts off completely and try restoring it again.

I need help with tethering.

I'm using the following app:

iphonemodem.png

I can't get it to connect. Says 'No Wifi' at the bottom. I don't see 'Iphone Modem' in the network settings as indicated in that image either. Anyone hear use this?

Also, once I do get this to work... Will I be charged extra?

Found this in the T&C:

(i use PDAnet not iphonemodem) Ok, did you set up an adhoc wifi network on your computer and connect the iphone to that? What that pic means is that the person named the created network iphoneModem. Starting the iphonemodem app doesn't create that network. If you are using a Mac it's very easy. Just click on the network icon on the menu bar and click 'create network'. Then go to settings on you iphone and connect to the correct wifi network.

It's a jailbroken app right? Well, unless AT&T is being extra vigilant they shouldn't be able to tell that you are tethering. They do plan to rollout their own official tethering solution soon and that will cost money. And if they catch they might make you pay. But no, you don't have to pay to use IphoneModem...

Thanks for responding. I guess I was doing it wrong. I didn't create the ad-hoc.

Got it connected to Ad-Hoc, but I'm starting to think that iPhoneModem is a Mac only solution...

Using PDANet instead. Worked perfectly.

:( Apparently I was wrong. PDANet just informed me that the free trial is over (didn't even know there was a trial) and I'd have to pay $30 to resume using the full package. I can still connect to http connections with the unpaid for version so the browser is fine. I guess I could check my mail using the web client. It's worth it IMO just wish they didn't sneak up on me like this.

Same here. I lost my 16gb iPhone while on vacation and bought a new 8g one. Now I can't surf pages on Safari longer than 1 minute before it crashes. My older iPhone didn't seem as bad. But this is frustrating!

Just a warning.. i found out today that PDANet expires after a certain amount of time, and only allows http connections if you don't purchase it, for 30bux! i caved, obviously, need my msn, gtalk, etc.

Thanks for the head's up. As long as I can use http:// then I'm good. Strange how they don't tell you about the expiration up front.

So, does anyone know a good (newbie freindly) site or software to unlock/downgrade a iphone? It is locked now due to my cousing trying to upgrade it. In the case that asking for this kind of stuff is against the rules, please ignore this post/let me know

Is there a good app that will let me listen to internet radio?

Just doing it in Safari is awful. You can't ever see the artist or song title, and you can't use the web browser while listening.

I don't have it but here's a review from Gruber at Daring Fireball. He likes it.

Anyone else notice that Gruber has reached stratospheric levels of awesome in the last five months or so? There used to be a dozen or more sources of Apple-tinted feeds worth reading out there, and I'm still subscribed to all of them, but out of all of my feeds if there's a Daring Fireball (1) on there, I bee-line for it. Almost always good.

Is there an app that lets you search off of sender, or keywords from your Exchange mail, or other mail account? This is one of my big pet peeves w/ the iPhone/non-winmo phones.

Eh, there are several third party mail apps, I'm sure one offers searching, but unless they're somehow backed by Apple' Mail.app, it's highly unlikely they'll be licensed to access Exchange.

How accurate is the usage time stat you get in the iPhone settings?

And is there an app which can give you a more detailed breakdown?

I wonder how accurate that counter is sometimes.

Just log into your account at ATT to make sure. Breaks it down in detail.

He's good now that he's full time, for sure. I do wish he'd have another absurdist idea like his anthropomorphized brushed metal series.

friggin genius, those were.

I bought a damn T-shirt from the site after I first read those.

The new version of Google Mobile App with voice search is up! It doesn't show as a new version in the App Store (or as an update available for it if you already have it) but the file you download will be the new version.

It rocks!

How do I re-download it if I already have it installed?

EDIT: nm the answer is obvious.

Playing with the Google app now. Voice search is surprisingly not bad. I like that it's correctly answering my arithmetic answers!

I just wish it read aloud responses like Goog 411. That'd be great.

Awesome! Isn't the Google Mobile app developed by the developer of Quicksilver?

EDIT: Yes he is! I spoke "quicksilver creator google" and it popped up immediately. This will be amazingly useful for endangering myself while driving. :lol

This is why it should really have text-to-speech. It'd be awesome to plug it into a car on MS SYNC or something and have wireless search

Baby steps, right? I'm sure that's on the drawing board. Hopefully I won't have died in a car crash before they get it worked out. :lol

Nice touch that when you launch a google web app from the Google Mobile app that you can hit the back button to return to the Mobile app.

But the version of Google Calendar they link you to is the older version, not the superior one they now have at the the actual mobile Google website.

Voice search is great. Not perfect with the recognition but the functional implementation of holding it to your ear works brilliantly.

I'm looking for a good Macbook sale for Black Friday. In the event it happens, I was wondering what I should look for in a laptop configuration that would maximize the usefulness of my iPhone. It's actually the phone that convinced me to get the laptop. It'll be a pretty barebones config, but will I see any added functionality from getting bluetooth support? My main concerns are still getting the calendar to sink easily with the OS. iCal should make that seamless. PEACE.

Not sure what you mean? Share your entire contacts list or Sync? Or just give someone your personal contact details? Apple hasn't allowed developers to access the bluetooth for anything but headphone sets. If you are looking to exchange contacts with another iphone user there are a one or two apps in the store that do that for you (through WiFi I believe, not bluetooth)

Can't sync via bluetooth right now and it doesn't look likely that Apple will enable it. However, yes, syncing with iCal is very easy if you have a Mac. Any of the configurations should be fine to be honest, but note that MBP only has 2 usb ports available to connect your iphone with...

huh? the usage counter is 100% accurate as far as i know. the thing is it counts anytime ur phone is in use, whether ur doing it or not. it could be getting emails or whatever. why would you think its not accurate?
