My iPhone takes forever to connect to the 3G network, now. Whenever I switch it on, it'll say "Network Unavailable." A few minutes later, the 3G icon will finally pop up. Is something wrong with my iPhone? It used to connect immediately.

say, I get on my cousins family plan, how much would I have to pay a month if all I got was a voice plan? $10 a month?

$10 for the line plus the required $30 data plan on top of how you guys decide to manage the minutes

Received an odd text from AT&T tonight. I have a G1 (Sorry TF fan, so first generation = G1) iPhone too, which is what makes it odd:

AT&T Free Msg: Your Network is now faster than ever. You'll enjoy faster download speeds for video, music & more. Look for the 3G icon on you phone screen. Reply stop to end mktg msgs.

Is there some plan to roll out a G1 update to connect to G3 now? :|

Oh and someone finally made a voice dial app that I don't need to jailbreak my phone for. No thanks to Apple - it's called Say Who.

Now if only someone would make a web browser that isn't prone to crashing when I browse NeoGAF. :|

eh, I guess 40 isnt that bad. But I'd rather just use wifi.

Yeah I think repairs tend to cost a lot more than simply buying a new phone -- which is why you see so many cracked phones for sale on eBay.

the data plan is technically required, but its easy to not use it. basically you can use any ATT plan on the iphone (im assuming you have 3g) so this is what u do

-call ATT and tell them that you dont want to use the iphone anymore, and that you have another cell you want to use.
-you will have to give them the IMEI number of the new phone which u can find with some number combination, google it.
-tell them u dont want the data plan and they will take it off
-when they ask, tell them u are keeping the iphone for future use.
-i think they might also turn off ur visual voicemail, but small price to pay, u can try to get them to leave it.

this works. ive done it with many many iphones.

A story on CNN about the developer of Trism - it's earned him $250k profit in two months. Not bad for a spare time project.

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TECH/11/18/iphone.game.developer/index.html

A former ATM software designer for a large bank, Demeter created "Trism" in his spare time and pitched it to Apple last spring. The company made the game available for download with the July launch of its App Store, an online provider of applications for its iPods and iPhones.

Priced at $5, "Trism" earned Demeter $250,000 in profits the first two months.

"It's done phenomenal business," said Demeter, 29, who lives in the California's San Francisco Bay area. "I'm very honored that so many people would enjoy my game. I get e-mails from 50-year-old ladies who say, "I don't play games, but I love Trism.' That's the coolest thing."

Of course, he's now a 'former' bank software engineer, and he's started his own company to make games. However, another observer notes:

"It's a rich and promising vein that several independent game publishers have been able to successfully tap," said DigitalTrends' Steinberg in an e-mail interview. "However, success stories remain the exception, not the norm -- as with any gold rush, what we're presently seeing is a massive number of prospectors looking to stake their claim.

"Many of the overnight successes we've witnessed enjoyed the benefits of timing and visibility, advantages quickly being eroded due to market oversaturation," Steinberg added. "Let's put it this way: I wouldn't tell anyone to quit their day job just yet. As with any Cinderella story, chances of recreating this kind of success are few and far between."

I apologize if this has already been asked in this thread, but I'm starting to consider getting an iPhone (even though my Verizon contract isn't up for another year). I will want to put some music on my phone, but mostly I will want to use my current iPod as my main music device. I have a Dension iceLink in my car to play my iPod thru the head unit, and I'm pretty sure the newer iPods won't work with it. Is it possible to have two separate iPod profiles in my iTunes for syncing different sets of music? (I have a Mac.)

You put music on your iPod by putting a subset of your music library in a playlist as it is now, right? Just assign different playlists to different devices.

Yes. On my iPhone I just created a single playlist called iPhone that syncs the music I want to the phone. My iPod gets all the music regardless.

Not sure what you mean? Share your entire contacts list or Sync? Or just give someone your personal contact details? Apple hasn't allowed developers to access the bluetooth for anything but headphone sets. If you are looking to exchange contacts with another iphone user there are a one or two apps in the store that do that for you (through WiFi I believe, not bluetooth)
I meant to share a contact with someone though BT as you can do with most phones. Most of my friends don't have WiFi either (unless they have an iPhone), so that is not an option for me.

Apple needs to get its ass in gear and get up to date with the BT standards.

huh? the usage counter is 100% accurate as far as i know. the thing is it counts anytime ur phone is in use, whether ur doing it or not. it could be getting emails or whatever. why would you think its not accurate?
The only reason I ask is that the counter sometimes seems a tad high. I mean I use this phone all the time as I drive all over the state for my job and I am on the phone constantly. But, one day last week it said I had 3.5 hours of usage, but I had only had the phone for like 5-6 hours and the number seemed inflated because I was actually in court for a good portion of that time.

I never actually checked to see if the counter was accurate though and wondered if anyone else had the same suspicion.

Pretty sweet that l337pwn now has the avatars up and ready. All my friends that created avatars are viewable. The rest get the shadow figure.

Also, has anyone messed around with the google voice search yet?

I'm looking for a good Macbook sale for Black Friday. In the event it happens, I was wondering what I should look for in a laptop configuration that would maximize the usefulness of my iPhone. It's actually the phone that convinced me to get the laptop. It'll be a pretty barebones config, but will I see any added functionality from getting bluetooth support? My main concerns are still getting the calendar to sink easily with the OS. iCal should make that seamless. PEACE.

I'm looking at retiring a perfectly good white MacBook for about $600. Haven't posted it in the deals thread yet. PM me if you'd like details

Two questions:

I know that applications do not run in the background on the iphone. However, what if you run an application and lock the screen – does it continue to run? I think it does, but then when I open Byline to have it start syncing and archiving, then lock the screen waiting for it to finish, I often go back and see it unfinished regardless of connectivity.

Does anyone else have trouble with wi-fi connectivity? Regardless of signal strength, it seems like my iPhone loses the connection and reverts to Edge or 3G far, far too often. On the other hand, I do not have any problems with calls dropping – happens very very rarely on my phone.

dagZ said:

its whatever you want. when you tell them u no longer want the iphone, u can choose whatever plan you want after you give them the new IMEI. basically its as if you never opened an iphone plan. instead you opened a regular 2 year contract.

i dont know what programs you have, but anything can make that usage counter go up. maybe you had an IM program open or something. something was using the phone (probably the 3g data) while u werent using it.

So is this rumour of a firmware update coming Friday true or anyone heard anything?

I only want one because I'm sick of slow as shit Wi-Fi speeds, I don't want any more stupid features like Street View. Fix the fucking Wi-Fi Apple.

A firmware update should be coming soon, along with the new in-ear headphones.

As for your WiFi problems, don't expect any miracles. It's not a widely reported problem.

My Wifi seems fine here. It's not going to be as fast as browsing on a real PC but it's a lot speedier than EDGE is at least.

My Safari has been acting up a lot lately and crashing a lot... not sure what's going on. I used to see maybe one crash every 5 days but now I get 3-5 daily.

anyone know of a good free app must have list?

or a jailbreak must have app list

for me, there are two:

Intelliscreen. 10 bucks with tn day trial. puts all your important info on your lock screen. really handy. check and respond to texts, mail, phone calls all from the lock screen. you can tap the home button on the lock screen to bring up a coverflow list of your favorite phone numbers. double tap a picture to call.

Quickgold: quicksilver for the iphone. tap the home button on the home screen and a keyboard comes up. start typing and the app seaches your apps, bookmarks, contacts, safari history, etc and lays results out there in real time. tap what you want and you launch the app or make the call or open the browser. fantastic and free. so good, it should be part of the official OS.

Na sites are fine man, its just video takes litterly 30-40 mins to load a Youtube video over Wi-Fi where I can switch to 3G and it loads fine. Yes I know they are different quality but my net connection isn't a slouch, it wasn't a problem for me a month ago but it is now.

No WiFi issues here. Still works just as quick and fast as it ought to. I wouldn't be blaming Apple for this, but would probably instead look at router issues. Could be something specific to your phone, but I haven't heard of any major problems in this area, and wouldn't expect a firmware update to address it.

The problem with Youtube streaming has been discussed in this thread. My iPhone used to stream the Youtube videos pretty quickly, but now takes forever as well. All but the shortest Youtube videos takes WAY too long. I have to keep tapping the screen so it doesn't go black and I have to start the stream over again.

I know other posters complained about the same thing too. I don't know if it was a firmware issue or what, but like I said, streaming for me used to be much quicker. I don't even use Youtube anymore. :(

Can't get quickgold to install. It always crashes the phone and sends it into safe mode.

How much battery life do you get with Intelliscreen?

My essential free jailbreak app is probably Backgrounder. Not so much for running many apps at once but for quickly checking another app while still listening to the radio or staying logged in to my IM apps.

ouch. sorry to hear about the quickgold problems. I hadn't heard of anything wonky with it when I installed it. Figured it was stable.

with intelliscreen, my battery life seems to be the same as before. I don't know if it's checking things more often than the phone normally would but i haven't noticed a battery life change. i use it for weather and mail. I don't run the other bits like sports and rss news feeds.

I haven't heard anything official, but I've also heard rumors for Friday. I'm excited for it, though I'm hoping that copy/paste will be a surprise feature since it's definitely needed.

Oh snap, what's the update change?

I stopped playing finally cause I got to the point where I could consistently beat expert mode.

...and what's this about a new firmware update?

  • Fix Safari crashes
  • Copy/Paste
  • Tethering support
  • Voice dialing

If it does any of these it will be amazing...anything else will likely be meh.

Betas of new firmware are out in the develop communit already, so I doubt there will be any surprises. What we know so far:

  • Podcast downloading
  • Tethering
  • Support for the new in-ear headphones with volume buttons
  • Google maps with streetview and public transportation routes (IIRC)

Friday for the release has been on the rumor sites for the past week or so. The update adds none of those things that you mention. Well, maybe it'll help issues with instability in Safari but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere. "Bug fixes" are common though in the firmware notes.

That said, I know that the next update is suppose to add Google Street View, the option to download podcasts directly to the phone over the air, Emoji support (big in Japan!) and the ability to turn off the auto-correct feature. There may be more, and there could be a surprise, but I wouldn't count on it.

Edit: I've never seen tethering listed as an option in the new firmware, but AT&T has confirmed that it's coming soon. I figured it would be a new app though, and they're going to be charging $30/month to use it.

* Sounds and music are here! This update includes sound effects and a Fieldrunners theme song.
* Added a new map that requires new strategies.
* Added the highly requested Endless gameplay mode!
* Introduced two new fieldrunners. Watch out, one is invulnerable to goo!
* Added a grid to help place towers.
* The most recently obtained high score is now highlighted.
* Enhanced the visual quality of the title screen and the maps.
* Improved the user interface.

It's the same price you would pay to use AT&T's Mobile Internet service with those connect cards.

Sure, but when other networks don't charge anything for tethering and just consider it a feature of the phone...I feel a bit robbed.

I can't justify paying for an unlimited data plan and not having tethering included as part of the deal. I figured they'd just give you the capability later, not charge you for it.

5 bucks, fine.
10 bucks, ok.

30 bucks?! THIRTY?!

I wouldn't use it enough to justify the cost. It's more of a "when needed" thing, not a "use it all the time" thing.

...grr...

Well, the speculation is that it'll be $30, because that's what they charge for the Blackberries to tether. AT&T hasn't said what they'll charge for sure yet. Perhaps it'll be cheaper, but I doubt it.

And I agree. I was kind of excited when it was announced, but when I read that, I decided that I could probably live without tethering.

PDAnet is great for tethering.

Didn't LCFiner or someone here say that the way it works, none would be the wiser?
I only use it for emergencies however.

It's so easy.

I took my little mini laptop to work today to jailbreak two co-worker's phones at the office.
Took 7 mins each.
