iPhone Nano confirmed? I honestly have no idea what the appeal of a smaller phone with a scaled back featureset would be. At $200 it's not like the 3G isn't highly affordable.

I'd like to get an iPhone but I still have six months on my previous ATT contract to get the discount. What are my options? Can I get any kind of deal now or do I have to pay the full charge?

No one has any experience or advice on this?

Call AT&T?? I know that they will often give discounts on phones when you are within 3-6 months of your contract running out. Especially if they can upsell you into a new, more expensive plan, that includes data.

I've heard that as well. I was going to head over to a store but now I wonder if It's better to call or not.

You would probably save yourself a lot of time and hassle by just calling first.

iPod Touch does not have a camera, whereas the thing in the photos does.

Well, a camera itself doesn't necessarily mean it's a phone, but Apple has avoided putting one in their Touch line for now. But it does have a silent switch.

realistically when does apple have those conferences?? in the spring or summer? I am using my HTC touch pro for a week or so before i have to bring it back, but i dont want an iphone if its just gonna be updated in the next 2 or 3 months

this jan 6th is the last macworld--where there's a chance for an update.

Possibly, but wouldn't I be able to just walk out the store with an iPhone if I go there in person? That would be a big incentive to try. My phone is really crapping out on me and if I can get a new phone today I'd be in heaven. I wonder if these kinds of pre-expired contract deals are at the discresion of the sales person or is it a set thing that they just don't advertize.

If there is an update soon, it'll be only in capacity, not features. The next gen iPhone won't be due until Summer 2009.

The iPhone Nano is a bullshit rumor started by people that are fucking stupid. Nearly every feature on the iPhone is software. They're not just going to arbitrarily remove software features just to have a cheaper phone. And besides that, there's no way the Nano could be a cheaper alternative when they would need such a ridiculously small pixel size and somehow reduce the size of the parts to make it. This thing would be expensive as fuck.

And just ignoring all of that, Apple always spells "Nano" lowercase. As in, iPhone nano, not iPhone Nano.

and there is no possible way in life that something like this could come out or are you some sort of big wig at apple that has final say on all products that will be made there?

enlighten me pie baker

I can't appear to find the link (maybe because I already got an iPhone), but there's some page on the AT&T Wireless site that will tell you if you are eligible to get the iPhone at a reduced price. Sorry for not being able to provide a link--I know it's in there somewhere. I think I found it when I was logged into my account.

I think this is it: https://www.wireless.att.com/olam/loginAction.olamexecute?target=UpgradePH

still... you are not telling me something of substance... i am asking if there is any technical reason or whatever that would make that impossible.. i am not an engineer so i dont know all that goes into it... I am a business man and see a product that would get me to bite... so any real answers would be appreciated..

Engineering has nothing to do with it. If they wanted a keyboard on an iPhone, they would have made it already. As it is, the iPhone's entire design and purpose was made around removing the keyboard and allowing apps to decide the type of input it wants using the screen space.

There will never, ever be a keyboard on an Apple phone, let alone what appears to be three cameras. The only thing we're ever likely to see is that 16:9 screen size.

if you say so.. I appreciate your feed back. after 6 months, i may jump over.

I have a iphone that my friend found, i tried calling the person it belongs to but it isnt working anymore... tried mom but there was nothing... if I bring it to an apple store, will they return it to the guy or am i wasting time and should just use it like a touch

Does anyone know of a sim adapter that would work on 2.2, with the updated baseband?

I fucked up, and accidently updated my iphone.

I'm using Tmobile, btw.

The Apple Store can't do anything about theft or theft-related issues except maybe write down a serial number to give to a customer for reference purposes.

Try using every possible email address in the Mail application, perhaps?

Thanks. From what I found... technically I'm not. I'm 6 months away from qualifying. I was just hoping for ANY leway or even any discount in price. I heard some people got a discount while not running out of their old warranty.

It's fucking Bullshit that I gotta pay a $200 surcharge because I'm 6 months away from my last contract.

I just got back from the store and it was a nightmare. The lady was so nice and was ready to sell me a $299 16gb iPhone took everything to the cash register and when she looked up my account he face soured and she said there wasn't any discount she could do besides adding another line. I pleaded for a bit but had to walk out empty handed. I guess I'll try calling.

edit: I called - no dice. Lady said that Apple does not allow them to give them ANY early discount on the 3G iPhones. Maybe they used to but it seems like no matter how much I begged, how much I said I've been a good paying customer for years she just kept apologizing.

Makes me feel like such a duche that I gotta pay a $200 surcharge because I'm a loyal AT&T customer.

If not, then I don't know.

No, Chicago, IL and it turns out that it AT&T was fucked up due to a power outage in Michigan. It was just really weird that my phone wasn't affected, but hers was.

They can't just go around heavily subsidizing phones to people whenever they feel like getting a new phone...I don't understand why this concept is so hard to grasp.

But hang on, wasn't tis a CONTRACT you agreed to?

I thought there were some contracts that paid out on a basis of time - so fees for breaking the contract were high to begin with but got somewhat proportionally lower as time went on. Well, I guess not your one.

Also, you may be a good paying customer, but as per any client-business deal, they don't owe you any more than what they should, just as much as you don't owe them anything beyond your money.

Really so I'm alone on this? I gotta sit here with my f-ed up phone with a cracked screen (hasn't fallen, just cracked), broken bluetooth, reboots every time it opens, for six months while I wait for the contract which I've re-signed already about 4 times in 8 years to expire... even though I'm more then willing to add a new contract on to my existing one? That or pay for $200 more then everyone else? I'm not asking for a free phone I just would like a little leniency. Oh I'm the horrible entitlement demanding consumer meanwhile they're charging us 20 cents for each text message which costs them nothing. They're charging 2.50 for a ring tone that expires in 3 months.

mrkgoo, maybe I can just cancel then re-sign. Probably would lose my number though in that scenario plus pay the pro-rated early termination fee.

Well, I'm just saying it's a contract you agreed to. Still, I think goodwill to customer (even though they don't have any obligation) goes a long way. You shouldn't feel entitled to it, though.

I think, however, that there SHOULD be an obligation to provide you with a working phone through out your contract.

What does everyone think the chances of their being an update to the iPhone at Macworld or any time soon? My contract has finally run out and I am seriously, seriously itching to jump ship. I really don't want to get screwed though.

I don't think they are THAT strong, but stranger things have happened. MacWorld is in like a week. You can't wait that long? For the record, the iPhone is a strange one. Had a major price drop like 2 months after launch, and the iPod Touch had a bump in capacity something like 4-5 months after launch. With Apple diversifying their products so much, it's getting harder and harder to predict when Apple will do anything. Possibly another reason why Apple is dropping MacWorld - they must feel obliged to launch something in January every year, which is just not possible.

Lol. I went back to page 1 and read a little through this thread. I have two posts on the first page, kind of drooling over it, but it being a pipe dream. Here I am a year and a half later with both an iPod Touch and an iPhone to my name.

Oh I'm waiting. I'm just that excited. I'm finally free of T-Mobile if I wish.

Getting a bad error on the iPhone. During my trip to LA it just died and said I needed to restore the phone on iTunes. When I tried to restore the phone iTunes said it could not connect with the iPhone and gave me some error with the SIM card saying it was not connected or that it needed a pin code. WTF?

Am I screwed? And should I take my phone to the Apple store or to AT&T?

Does your sim need a pin code? I had an issue activating my phone with my sim, until I put my sim in another phone and deactivated the code.

Not that I am aware of. Had the phone for months and never had to put in a code.

iPhone nano At Macworld, Confirmed By Vaja?
We just received word from a reliable source within Apple that they are in fact working on an iPhone Nano, and that it will be announced at Macworld. The source says that the iPhone Nano will most likely be similar in form-factor to the iPod touch, and will probably not include 3G.
In the past I've been openly skeptical about the barrage of iPhone Nano rumors, but it's starting to get pretty convincing.
Interestingly, Macrumors reports that iPhone and iPod Touch accessory maker Vaja (the guys behind the iVolution) joined XSKN and Inspiretech (Thanks, ltdanicecream!) and updated their site to also include with a link for the iPhone Nano that redirects users to a page where they can ask to get more information about upcoming related products. It's starting to look like this really could come true, folks!
A new phone model without 3G? Makes no sense to me.

"The form factor of an iPod Touch"

What the flying fuck does that mean? Does it mean "The exact same fucking form factor as the normal iPhone"...?

...and if that line didn't bother me enough, they say "Probably going to get rid of 3G"...as if the whole fucking point of the latest iPhone update wasn't 3G capability. As in it was named iPhone 3G.

...and a major product announcement at an event where Steve Jobs isn't giving a keynote?

I place 100 dollar firmly on "This article is full of poop".

there's more than one iPod, why not more than one iPhone? my guess is that this Nano will have only 2-4GB (but expandable w a microSD card), no 3G, smaller form factor but same screen resolution, and aggressively priced at $99. i can see this thing being sold nearly everywhere iPods are, just take it home and activate online. meanwhile the iPhone 3G continues on as is with updates to memory size, camera, etc.

edit: btw, Vaja is highly reputable, not some Chinese/HK fly by night. if Vaja say there will be an iPhone Nano then there will be an iPhone Nano.

apple will never incorporate a microsd slot in an iphone/ipod.

Vaja and every other case manufacturer have no information on upcoming products. They're just guessing.

The form factor of the iPod touch is different than that of the phone. thinner, lighter.

If the 'nano' is going to be a cheaper model/entry level price then of course it's going to have less the the full phone at double the price. Going without 3G probably makes the most sense.

This isn't really a 'new' phone model. Not something that would replace current 3G iPhone users. This is like adding an iPod nano to the Ipod line.

Not saying this is 'true' - but it's certainly got more weight behind it now than it did even a week ago.

that's not necessarily true. There were iPhone third party cases and products pretty much at launch. Sometimes Apple sets these deals up ahead of time.

But yeah, they aren't exactly going have full access or anything.
