You mean it starts playing automatically?

My iPhone didn't start automatically, but if I had synced it it always started at this one particular song and I thought it went random from there - but just today, I found out that it was actually by song order.
Yeah, it starts playing the first song on an alphabetized list of all of my music when the headphones are plugged in. It could be sync related, as this most recent time was right after a sync. I can live with it, but it is rather annoying.

Dez is probably right. What kind of headphones are you using?

Is it just me or did AT&T's 3G coverage increase after the new year?

I live in a no-3G zone. I went on vacation, came back and now have 4 heathy bars of 3G goodness.

So it's not really random (shuffle).

Here's my theory. The remote clicker for iPhone simply hijacks the mic line. It gives it a pulse electronically - like a surge or something. One surge = play (it's how the clicker works), double pulse forward, and so on.

Now your headphones, for whatever reason makes something equivalent to this 'pulse' when you plug it in, making the iPhone think you've just clicked it, and therefore start music. This will start from your alphabetised songlist.

I also have the problem with the automatic full playlist in alphabetical order. It's your headphones accidentally sending an electronic signal to the iPhone to play. Usually if I plug in my headphones really fast it won't do it.

I think this problem is widespread enough that Apple should put an option in the Settings to disable remote functions.

Are your headphones with mic, or without? I've never had this issue before.

Crystal Anti-Glare screen protector by Power Support > *
How does it feel?

I've gone naked since 3G launch and am considering picking up a screen protector. A friend picked up one (not sure what exact one though) and while you couldn't see it, the feeling was rougher than the actual touch screen. Are all screen protectors like that? Because I don't like that feeling at all.

if it was rougher, it was most likely a Zagg invisible shield or a bodygauardz skin.

the PS antiglare screen actually feels a bit more slippery and smooth than the glass. the downside is that it removes some of the pop from the image (as antiglare screens do). It's worth it for the elimination of fingerprint smudges, tho.

I know it wasn't the Zagg, and he got two for $15. He doesn't remember what brand either.

Hmm...the PS protector has potential if it is really smoother than the glass.

I just downloaded a game on my iPhone, but the icon just went missing. So I decide to restart the phone, and it doesn't load up. Just has the USB cable and iTunes icon like when you first get it.

So I plugged it in to my PC, and 10 minutes later it says 'iPhone is activated' on the screen.

I hope this doesn't count as one activation for my DRM'd music. :P

Nah, you're cool.
It sounds like something fucked up and restored itself.

So I have an iPhone tethering option question for all you users. I currently live in an apartment with cable internet. It's terrible, and even though I pay just $24 for it, it's just too slow(supposed to be 1.5Mbs but more like 128-256kbs). I already asked them and they've gone multiple times to inspect and they all tell me the lines are saturated or some technical term like that. Basically there's too many people living in that building and they just won't fix it. The other option I have is DSL but I'd have to pay for a telephone line for that so it would cost around $40-ish when it's all said and done. For these two reasons I was considering some kind of wireless 3G/EV-DO service, but they seem too pricey for me. I investigated and AT&T doesn't offer a tethering option for the iPhone, but they do offer a data only line for $60 with a 5GB limit. After seeing my options, here are my questions:

1) How much is a 5GB data limit for a guy who occasionally watches videos on youtube, uses facebook, goes to some forums and uses adium? I mean, I'd like to see some statistic of what I use somewhere, are there programs that do that for you?(For Mac OS X if possible).

2) I see that people can jailbreak the iPhone and use a tethering option. My question, is it worth it to jailbreak just for this(considering my situation) and can I always go back to the non-jailbreak version in case of needing warranty? Also, I've read that you shouldn't use this option much because AT&T could find out and screw you up. Is this real and how much data should I be using to avoid this?

3)When using tethering, can the phone still make calls or does it act like a modem and nothing else?

Thanks very much. By the way, the 3G signal is pretty good in both of my places, so that's a plus.

Yup, I love mine. The only Con is that it dulled the vibrance of the colors a little bit. But it has a smooth matte finish that feels perfect on your fingers, and it stop nearly 100% of all glare and face smudges. I haven't had to wipe the screen clean once since getting this.

Without. This happens on my Senn HD280s at home, my double-sided aux cable in my car, and my EH150s at work. About every other time I plug them in or take them out, the iPod part starts playing my entire library in alphabetical order.

Maybe it's static based. There's a lot of fleece in my daily routine, and I know that my Zune sometimes shuts off when I discharge the static.

Although if others are having this issue, I'm not sure.

just installed twitterfon + shovel.

don't know if I'll need them but anyhow.

subscribed to this thread.

Anyone else have their iphones superlock up on them in their day to day use, so much so that they need to use a cable+computer to unlock? I've had it happen. Iphone is less than 2 months old.

Also on Aussie 700+mb plan 3g - and I am quite amazed at how indata heavy usage is. Very usable and fun

Hey iphone-GAF, can you tell me if I should buy or pass on these apps? I'm going to go on a 7 hour train ride (14 hours counting the trip back) and I'll need something to pass the time.

SimCity

The Price is Right

SandScapes

And can any of you recommend some apps that I can just play around with for a long period of time that provide a decent amount of fun?

7 Hours? I hope you brought a charger....

SimCity is a pass, others haven't played.

Luckily I'll be traveling business class and just happened to pick up an ac adapter/wall charger so battery life will not be a problem :D

And why a pass on SimCity? I heard fairly good things about it.

I'm a big simcity 3000 fan and I think SC iphone is worth it, yes. it's, like 95% of SC3000 in your pocket.

I can't speak of the other games.

other recommendables for passing time on a long trip:

Motion X Poker or Poker Quest
wurdle
bejeweled
critter crunch
line rider
metasquares
*insert tower defense game here*
monopoly
subway shuffle
touchgrind
topple
aqua forest - physics simulation
aurora feint - panel de pon w/ rpg stat building
motherfuckin' Rolando

Does anybody know what a good size should be used for the cover art for the music? Some of them look fugly on it so I want to edit them out.
700x700 is usually a good number. Not too big, not too small.

Alright so I've pretty much narrowed it down to SimCity and Aqua Forest...I'll probably buy both.

One last question...are there any good science-related book-apps I can download? I couldn't find Principia so that was a major letdown.

Edit: wow wtf Aqua Forest is $8? Don't know if I should get it now.

Honestly, there are very good games that are better than aqua forest for less than 8 bucks. aqua forest is very fun to experiment with but the goal oriented section of the game is over quickly.

If you're into puzzle-ly mind bender stuff, subway shuffle can keep you busy for ages.

oh, one i forgot. super slick platformer with some challenge: EDGE. take a look at the videos it's quite impressive.

Square Enix is the creator of Final Fantasy, right?

I'll make an extra effort to avoid Crystal Defenders at all costs in that case.

Crystal Defenders is a tower-defense game of sorts and not really an RPG. But hey, if you wanna chug the Hatorade, your prerogative. I'd also suggest checking out how awesome Song Summoner was, a nice, short and sweet strategy game for the iPOD. Seriously, Square Enix's mobile phone division is some of the best talent in their whole company, seeing what they do with such limited formats.

SimCity on the iPhone is great :lol

You can tether by jailbreaking your phone I believe but keep in mind that if AT&T catches you you are going to have a HUGE bill.

Second, the speeds you get on 3G are going to feel very slow on your laptop, even next to a shit cable connection.

I guess that pretty much says it all. Won't go for that. Thanks!

This is a little offtopic but you may be able to get DSL without having to pay for a phone line (called Naked DSL). It ends up being cheaper than cable, at least for me, but it may not be available everywhere.

So without changing the logic board on my broken iPhone, I managed to get it working.

However, I kept experiencing freezes, crashes, white screens, iphone not waking up from sleep problems so I downgraded from 2.2 to 1.1.4. I don't know if this will help. I've only experienced the phone rebooting using Cydia and Installer.

Anyone experience issues with firmware 2.2? I found myself restarting the phone at least 5 times a day because it wouldn't wake up from sleep. Yes, I turned off auto-lock and auto-brightness.

I'm not going to blame the jailbreak because the activation screen does freeze and does not wake up sometimes.

Also, if I keep toggling the sleep/wake button, the phone eventually reboots or locks up.

If there are no fixes for this, then wow, the iPhone is probably the shittiest mobile OS ever. My winmobile5 phone has been a lot better.

I have yet to experience any problems with my iPhone on 2.2. There's something seriously wrong with your hardware. If it's still in warranty, I recommend calling Apple and getting your phone replaced immediately.

I feel almost ashamed to like Crystal Defenders. I mean, it's fun, but it's also a shameless port that doesn't control nearly as well as it should. But having the pause functionality saves it, so yes, I too hope for Song Summoner to appear.

The Price is Right is lovely. I love that game. But I just got Monpoly last night and I am 100% addicted to it. I give Monopoly 4.5 skeets out of 5.

Simcity is supposed to be outstanding as well. If you are a fan of the PC version and want a fully featured version for the road, you can't go wrong.

You bought a broken phone and are blaming your problems on the OS. :lol

2.2 is solid as a rock. You'll need a working phone to experience it.

Seriously.

I only put up with the very occasional crash of software. I don't even reset my phone more often than once a week, sometimes less.

just to add to the consensus. 2.2 is solid. you have shit hardware.

I finally got the new Apple In-Ear Headphones (late Christmas present) the other day. These things rock. The sound is fantastic. It's at least as good and probably better than my old Shure SE110s. They're way smaller too. The bass response is good (I'm still futzing with the different cap sizes to determine which gets the best seal), but I'm really impressed by the high end. The dual-driver design gives you really crisp highs since there is a dedicated tweeter in the each earbud.

Quick thanks to all the guys that suggested a soft reset for the iPhone.

Hasn't really misbehaved much at all since.

Some Apps act funny, but I think that's the app, not the phone.

Just popping in to drop a note for those awaiting a non-smartphone iPhone with no internet options. This should be clear to most people but it's good to have someone at Apple state the obvious.

the following quote is from COO Tim Cook from the quarterly results conference call

2:28 PT - DM: Tim: We're not going to build a low-end voice phone. Our objective is not to be unit share leader, it's to build the world's best phone.

So, there ya go. stop waiting for it.

if the market sees a huge upheaval in a couple years and people stop buying iPhones, then maaaaaaybe it could happen. but it ain't happening this year or anytime soon.
