The only one that interests me is fixing the problem I have with the iPhone. If there was an actual decent looking customization skin, sure, but there has never been one.
From reading comments on the jailbreak pages, it sounds like a complete crapshoot if you have success or a broken phone and I don't need a broken phone.

not sure where the hell you are getting information from or if its just your blinding hatred for your cell phone provider clouding your judgment, but you are just full of wrong. u dont like the skins? make one yourself. thats the beauty of jailbreaking, you can do what you want.

its ridiculous that you look for justification for jailbreaking, and then when presented with evidence, all you say is "can it give me alerts for my email? which every other iphone outside of japan already has?"

there is practically no risk in jailbreaking a phone. sure if youre an idiot you might mess up (not sure how) but it is fully fixable, and definitely nowhere near a crapshoot.

How do you block calls? I keep getting a stupid automated message on a daily basis and I can't figure out how to ignore/block the number on my iphone.

Call your phone company and file a complaint. Same for spam SMS messages. There are actually FCC regulations that prohibit this since it is not like a land line where you have 'unlimited' time.

I was reading the comments on the QuickPwn page. Results ranged from phones that wouldn't boot up to issues for having a certain version of Macbook Pros that needed special settings or something or not working entirely.

It was far from encouraging.

Will this wipe all the settings on my phone? I recall reading that people who tried to go from phones that already had settings on them often couldn't complete it and had to put everything back manually. Not exactly an enticing offer.

And no, you guys haven't given me one reason in favor of jailbreaking yet. I know that I can solve my problem, but since it seems like the chances of having more problems is higher than zero it makes me a little squeamish to consider.

If you have problems, they'll be software-related, and easily fixed by reverting back to not being jailbroken. It's not like things that go wrong can't be undone if it's a software tweak. Yeesh.

But good news for the Chinese: Looks like Apple gave up on talks with China Mobile and are working with China Unicom to get the phone in that country, likely with more favorable results than China Mobile would have ever given them. Should have done this in the first place.

Well, you people make it seem like it's "click, click, done" and it clearly isn't.

Ugh, Cydia is saying that an essential upgrade is needed, but it times out before it downloads. This kind of shit is what I was talking about.

Okay, I've been hunting through the thread but missed what I believe I need to know.

How does this affect syncing from now on?
How does this affect my backups? In fact, non jailbreaking question, how many of my backups are kept anyway?

General iPhone question. Can you sync without having it do a backup?

All I know is that you can cancel the backup.

Question:

I just got a new iPhone. I love it, if it worked right. My biggest problem is that when I use the iPod function, it simply cuts out and stops about ~1 minute into any song I play. Any clues? Common issue? Setting that's FUBAR'd?

Bad MP3s. I had an iPod nano that wouldn't play a certain album, but that album played fine on my iPhone and computer. Re-ripped it and it plays fine on everything now.

If it really is every single song you have, it might be a defective phone.

Weird. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. :( Sometimes it will go on for a while and be fine, and sometimes it just won't work for more than 30 seconds.

Frustrating.

I think it's the files from my wife's old PC.

When it plays those ones, it will randomly during a song just cut out. Not at teh same place in the song, but always in those songs and not others. I guess I could re-rip from CD and see how that works, cause my Van Halen songs haven't skipped or stopped once.

***PC Itunes Help***

This doesn't deserve its own thread, but I figured I'd ask here. I have a 2-month old Sony VAIO laptop that is my base for my iTunes and iPhone. Last night I let my girlfriend use my laptop to burn a DVD and while she was looking for the right program she accidentally opened this stupid VAIO 'content analyzer' program. I shut it when I got my computer back, thinking nothing of it.

Today, I opened iTunes to listen some music and my library was...empty. I first flipped out before going into the iTunes Music folder and seeing that all my files were still there. Weird. I then opened WMP and, lo and behold, all of my music was in there. I added the iTunes Music folder back into my iTunes and checked my defaults in control panel. Surprisingly, mp3, AACs, etc. were still defaulted to be played in iTunes.

After waiting for my iTunes to transfer back in and another hour waiting for the covers to redownload and the gapless analysis to finish I reset my laptop. Same bull-shit. My iTunes is empty, but all my files are still in my iTunes folder.

Any one have any experience with iTunes acting like this? I'd really like to add some new music I bought on my iPhone, but don't want to sync it until this is worked out.

Your iTunes Library is just an XML file with the files to point to. I don't know how it is on PC, but on Mac it's in my generic OS X music folder, and I have an "iTunes Library" file and a "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder. If you have some previous iTunes libraries, try to copy one back to the original place and name it "iTunes Library" and it should be fine again.

My cousin had a similar problem, sometimes just losing the app and reopening was enough for the files to disappear from itunes. Do you see a lot of fake itunes database files in the folder? I kept deleting and re-adding then finally gave up.

anyone have a white iphone? i'm assuming it's a bit better at hiding scratches/smudges than the black one, right?

Uhh...yeah!

I managed to track down Tris (Tetris clone). Where in the file directory do I put the tris.ipa? I placed it where I had another .ipa of a game I bought 'block break deluxe 2' but it doesn't show up.

Don't bother tris (well when it was on the appstore) is pooh compared to the EA version.

I emphatically disagree. The EA Tetris is clunky and slow and inaccurate from an input standpoint.

*fires it up again to reconfirm*

Yeah, plus Tris fills up the entire screen, allows me to listen to my own music. It's just all around better IMO.

Blocked has been my main go-to game, but I'm at level 49 and it's no longer fun, but frustrating.

I guess each to their own. I MUCH prefer the EA version (the only downside is no endless - oh and the reasonably long wait to startup).

Tris for me looked like tetris, controlled ok, played like tetris, but you know, just wasn't tetris. The scoring and hold piece are now part of the Tetris Holding Company guidelines, as well as game play mechanics such as how the blocks enter and rotate (and strangely, the colours too). EA Tetris follows these guidelines, Tris does not.

EA controls, I found, were superior. I thought about as good as you could do on a touch screen. YOu need to be able to rotate clockwise and anticlockwise. The swipe to drop feels natural.

edit: EA tetris allows you to play your own music if I recall.

Yeah, I just got done playing it some more. It's just...different. Certain things I'm used to doing on Tris (my most played Tetris game ever) you can't do on the EA version (due to copyrights I'd imagine). It's just an adjustment. It's not as bad as I thought though. I just prefer Tris.

Car warranty about to expire?

I get those phone calls often too. ARGH WANNA AXE SOMEONE TO PIECES
That car insurance spam call is affecting a lot of people I guess. I called my provider the other day and they said they couldn't block the number but it was funny because the CSR I talked to had been getting the same calls too on his cell. He said if you actually listen to the recording there will be an option (press 2) to take yourself off their calling list and that he hadn't gotten a call since he did that. I haven't tried it yet but I will next time I get the call.

I'm on the do-not-call list here in canada and yet I still get this shit, it actually seems like I get more spam than I did before I put my number on the list. It's pathetic.

I have an unlocked/jailbroken iPhone 2G on T-Mobile and I'm planning on switching over to AT&T now. Can I just upgrade to the latest official FW on iTunes and setup my new account from there?

Just thought I'd ask here as well:

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having two accounts vs. changing countries on the account details, besides convenience? Am I allowed unlimited, whenever changes to the country?

How does syncing apps with multiple stores/accounts work exactly? Would I have to log in to the appropriate store before checking for updates for those apps, or does it just check all apps regardless of store (like podcasts)? If I had apps from several stores on the SAME account, would it repeatedly pop up "Sorry that app is not available in your country" every time I checked for updates?

Any opinions?

Anyone else having problems with 3G in their area? My speeds have slowed down to EDGE speeds for about a month. Anyone else having this issue?

Like I said all my music is still there and I easily re-added it into iTunes, but when I turn my computer off and then back on iTunes is empty: no playlists, settings, music, movies, anything.

I'm not sure which folder you mean. I see a ton of temp files in my music folder, but not database ones.

This is fucked, I'm probably going to reinstall Windows, arrggh.

Awesome. I wonder what they have in store for us with 3.0. A major update less than a year after 2.0, although it'll probably drop with the new phone in the summer. Might steal some thunder from the Pre too.

I really hope they show some stuff that we're not expecting. something really cool that's totally out of left field.

i also hope they get their act together with push notifications. that would be very useful and has been delayed far too long.

.
Yes please. Please!
I've been waiting so long.

On my wish list is turn by turn software, from SOMEONE, ANYONE.

I know one thing, they can't ignore the push notifications issue. Either they are going to tell us it's coming or they have an alternative to it I think.

I also think alot of people are going to be pissed when they don't say shit about MMS. :lol

As a surprise, I'm hoping for a turn-by-turn navigation app worked on by Google and Apple. :D

Any recommendations for headphone adapters that include the mic component so you can plug in an standard set of headphones, like the iSoniTalk from Montser?

I like pretty graphics.

3.0...nice.

Bring on the goodies.

Why not both?

Well, the Push system that they had come up with was a bit of a hack to get around background apps. Wouldn't seem to be necessary, although it might save on battery life some. But they have obviously had issues getting that system working considering it was due out last September.
