Well, the Push system that they had come up with was a bit of a hack to get around background apps. Wouldn't seem to be necessary, although it might save on battery life some. But they have obviously had issues getting that system working considering it was due out last September.

I'm thinking some apps need to run in the background like for example an internet radio app so you can quit the app and still listen. But then something like a chat program wouldn't need to be constantly running. They let you connect through the server and then if you get a message a background notification can alert you, saving on battery life as opposed to having the chat program constantly running -- so I can see a use for both methods.

Allowing background apps is the real holy grail here. Some of the apps being built for Android phones really show the potential of having an always-on pocketable computer running with access to network and location services. Push won't cut it.

I am really willing to buy a turn by turn app, but I want it to be very very reliable and worth the money.

You should also know that the one on the app store does not give out a voice or beep signal when to take the turn.

Never tried xGPS when I was unlocked before.

Not having any audio cues when to turn is all good, as I currently mute my GPS. My music is usually on too loud to hear it anyways, but I don't like the constant reminders to stay on the same road I'm already on. I just glance at it every now and then and that's worked well for me.

You have a good point. I was in NZ so I never even had an official chance at the original iPhone. Although I like the original form factor better, I'm glad I bought the new one.

I think Apple really has nailed their product roadmap. Each iteration of every product is carefully planned out to remain as stable in price, but offer enough new features to entice a new owner, while simultaneously offering a modest upgrade to not alienate an immediate previous owner and something to interest older owners.

Their product lineup is the same. They carefully execute the feature set from model to model, sometimes cunningly omitting features from a low end to entice purchase of a higher end, or at the very least tease consumers with an upgrade path of their own.

Obviously it's not perfect - you cannot please everyone, but I think this is actually Apple's strongest point as a business, whether you agree with this practice or not.

Besides the fact that I need an alarm clock, or that I should leave the iPhone plugged in all night, does anyone have any suggestions?

I don't remember this being a problem before, but now it's driving me crazy. I disabled push email and bluetooth, but I'd hate to have to disable Wifi and 3G every single night before I go to sleep only to activate them in the morning.

I have push, 3G and wifi on, and my charge doesn't last one day. It probably lasts a bit more than half a day.

The battery life is driving me crazy. Number 1 annoyance with the phone.

Oh, I should add that it's only been this bad since I've had it synced with an Exchange server with push enabled.

i haven't seen a single good theme posted in this thread, that's for sure. and i keep seeing worse themes getting shown off on other forums like macrumors. i posted a couple here myself just for shits and giggles.

back when i had a 1st gen, jailbroken phone, i played around with themes and thought the "smoothicons" one wasn't terrible. or having a subtle textured background, like a dark perforated metal background instead of black.

but, the main problem with any cohesive theme is that the effect is broken by the presence of 3rd party apps for which there are no icons designed for them.

there was a post here a couple weeks ago that showed a slick looking blue, white and grey theme in which all the icons were more abstract and arranged differently.

now, aside from being a bit harder to navigate for most users, the problem with that theme is that the effect is completely ruined once you put an app on there that doesn't have the custom blue/grey/white icon.

and, at that point, i have to wonder why people would even bother trying to customize the UI so much when it's gonna be broken once you download a couple new apps.

- Landscape keyboard in all apps (SMS, Mail, Notes)
- Search in Mail and iPod apps
- Syncing of notes to/from Mac
- Ability to set a custom sound for text messages
- Snippets, a button you can press on the virtual keyboard which would bring up a list of pre-typed stuff (such as your email address) so that you can save time
- Google Suggest (live searching predictions) like Safari 4 has

Looking forward to seeing what we actually get.

A lot of theme creators supply the template in which you can use to create your own icon, it's simple.

All I want from 3.0 is the ability to download podcasts over 10MB easily. Right now, I have to jailbreak purely for one single plugin for Safari that lets me save MP3s from websites. It's incredibly dumb the limits within the iPhone for download, yet streaming works fine (assuming you get a steady 3g connection, which I usually don't at work).
