I'm thinking some apps need to run in the background like for example an internet radio app so you can quit the app and still listen. But then something like a chat program wouldn't need to be constantly running. They let you connect through the server and then if you get a message a background notification can alert you, saving on battery life as opposed to having the chat program constantly running -- so I can see a use for both methods.
