Impossible. I'm not buying that shit unless you never browse or use the phone for anything other than the occasional song or podcast. This means me and every person I've met with an iPhone has a defective battery or you got the mother of all batteries. I'm not buying it unless the excuse is light usage.

How much do you talk on your phone? Do you watch video podcasts? Do you browse often and check your email often? Are you on 3G?

3 days? Get the hell outta here.

- change the SMS layout so the SEND button is not, like, 10 pixels away from the keyboard...

- background apps or push notifications.

- either turn by turn directions in GPS or a rewording of the SDK so third party apps can do it WITH VOICE without being rejected from the app store.

- better app management. either within itunes or a new, faster way to move apps around on the home screens.

- better alerts. there was apple patent stuff shown a while ago that had much better alert options on the locked home screen. let's see that now.

- email search!

- faster way to switch between email accounts or an option to view all inboxes on one page.

- working with Google to have push gmail.

- maintain playlist folder hierarchy for ipod app

- maybe add some more multifinger gestures for the home screen. stuff to invoke mail or SMS... this may be complicating things too much, though

Forgot about this. I'd like to be able to quickly see if I've got new text messages and emails right on the homescreen. It should display the current weather there too.

Anyone still having problems with Safari stability? Seems like complaints of that have all buy disappeared.

Other than cut/paste and MMS I can't think of anything I really want from the next update. The app store is addressing everything else that I want (sometimes that I didn't even realize I wanted).

All I really need is copy and paste and MMS, copy and paste because I could use it, and MMS just to shut the constant whining up.

I'm more interested in the new hardware, honestly. I need 32GB badly.

EDIT: One more thing. Video recording would be nice, but I want at least 32GB to have any room left over for it. I couldn't record video now, I just don't have the room.

I talk on it about 30 minutes a day or so for work. I don't watch video, which would obviously kill any battery on any phone within a day. I browse about an hour a day off and on. I listen to NPR's hourly update podcast before and after work.

If you're doing much more than that, you're above normal usage and I wonder if any phone could meet those requirements. I mean, I'm sure people talk more than I do and that's understandable, but I think after an hour of talking a day, you have to expect the battery wouldn't last long on 3G + wifi roaming + push.

What about brightness? I have mine jacked down pretty low. Bluetooth is off also.

my battery life has been stable (and I would say acceptable) ever since 2.1

I use the phone on 3G browsing around 1 hour a day. music for about 5 hours. talking for another 30 minutes or one hour a day. push contacts and calendar on. push mail off. screen at around 70% brightness. BT on. wifi on (not connected, but searching)

by the evening, i have around 60% battery left.

if i spend about an hour playing with games on it before bed, the battery is down to around 30% or so and then i charge it overnight.

pretty much any smartphone, used extensively, NEEDS to be charged every night. it's not like our old nokia candybar phones that we would plug in once a week.

This can't be quoted enough. Anyone bitching about battery life needs to take a step back, breath, and look at any other smartphone on the market. The iPhone is comparable or better(lol G1) than anything out there.

The iPhone battery life is also pretty shit on 3G. You lose at least 33%.

On 2G it is pretty hard to have the battery run out in a single day.

my only wish list for iphoneos 3.0 is a way to have the thing show up as a normal usb hard drive, so i can use it with my turntables.

My oldschool ipod video can do this, my other cheap mp3 players can do it, why cant my expensive ipod touch do it?

Stop fucking me around, Apple!

One thing is, the phone charges really quickly. Because of this, I hesitate to leave it charging overnight. I typically sleep 7 hours, and I know it'll be charged at around 2 hours, so I don't like to have it plugged in for five hours or more after it's already charged.

Is that a mistake?

Having a car charger makes battery life a non-problem for me. I'm never in any one place long enough to have my phone die. If it's low, I charge inbetween destinations keep it's well charged. On the rare occasion that I have to go without charging for a day or two, the phone holds up well with proper precaution.

My touch 2g charges from near flat to full in about an hour tops, but the battery life while playing app's is only double that sometimes a little less. How long does the iPhone battery last if you are running app games?

:lol This was my reaction as well when I read that three day thing.

Battery life was pissing me off so much that I bought one of those InCase Power Slider cases so I would have some decent performance. Getting about 2.5 days of battery from a fully charged phone and Power Silder.

I've been charging my phone overnight(I leave it on the dock) since I purchased it back in Sep 07. The battery is still fine.

A lot of good suggestions thus far, the one thing I'd like is the ability to save work files (doc, xls, pdfs, ppts etc.) on my phone. I know the Air Sharing app is a tool to do something similar to this, but it'd be nice to officially have it as part of the OS.

I'm a go ahead and quote this again, because it's the truth.

However, I'm an 'above average' usage guy. For work I'm out driving around a lot, and talking a lot off and on with my boss/co workers. I'd say I use the Internet maybe an hour to two, but I used Google Maps/GPS a lot.

I basically have to charge my phone when I get home every evening because it's about to die.

However, I recently picked up one of those little portable inverters that has a USB slot in it for the car. Makes life much easier.

does anyone have any experience with saisuke app? its a calendar app that can be synced with google calendar. Its $10 but i dont mind paying it if does everything it says it can, without problems.

iphone calendars fine for regular use, but when using it for day to day business use i feel it just doesnt compare to the blackberry calendar in ease of use and visual displays.

My GFs G1 dies so much. And she never remembers to charge it.

Are you saying this because you already do it via jailbreak? With IntelliScreen on a jailbroken phone, you can have SMS messages, missed call alerts, email previews, weather, calendar, news, etc. It really should be an official app, though. There's no reason not to allow such a program for the user, and in fact it should be part of the OS.

I don't really have a custom "theme" but I switch out some icons for ones I make myself.
I also think the UI looks a million times better without app labels.

this is true, i am amazed at how the iphone battery jumps up in the charges. my battery goes from say 50 to 60 in literally 10 seconds. i dont know how the calculations work..but thats just weird. i leave it charging for 8-10 hours and i dont see any issue. dont know y there would be

The battery is designed to speed charge up to 80% then slowly charges from there.

some way to cancel an sms sending would be nice, sometimes ive hit the button by accident and i want to cancel it. all my other phones have had that.

i haven't seen a single good theme posted in this thread, that's for sure. :) and i keep seeing worse themes getting shown off on other forums like macrumors. i posted a couple here myself just for shits and giggles.

back when i had a 1st gen, jailbroken phone, i played around with themes and thought the "smoothicons" one wasn't terrible. or having a subtle textured background, like a dark perforated metal background instead of black.

but, the main problem with any cohesive theme is that the effect is broken by the presence of 3rd party apps for which there are no icons designed for them.

there was a post here a couple weeks ago that showed a slick looking blue, white and grey theme in which all the icons were more abstract and arranged differently.

now, aside from being a bit harder to navigate for most users, the problem with that theme is that the effect is completely ruined once you put an app on there that doesn't have the custom blue/grey/white icon.

and, at that point, i have to wonder why people would even bother trying to customize the UI so much when it's gonna be broken once you download a couple new apps.
I agree. The only thing that I want to see is the reflective dock from the original iPod touch. To me, that's the only tweak I want to the UI, because that was awesome.

I liked the reflective dock on the Touch, as well.

but the reflections were hard coded into the dock image. note how it disappeared the instant apple allowed ipod touch users to rearrange icons on the dock.

If it makes a comeback, it would need to have "live" reflections like on OS X. and that would require significantly beefier hardware to make the thing doable.

IOW, don't hold your breath :)

I'd love a "Mark All As Read" button for mail.

Also, is there any way to tell my phone to stop trying to download a few failed items on mobile iTunes? It just randomly pops up with "THIS FILE IS OVER 10MB CONNECT TO WIFI" =/

Actually, there's a downloadable in Cydia that gives you live reflections that change with the contents of your dock. All you need is a theme with a glass dock and you're in business. I just... kinda hate Winterboard, that's all.

I stand corrected!

Finally sent my app for approval to Apple, just wanted to brag about it. It's a software to create / download from the internet tablatures for guitars but also other strings based instruments like bass or even mandolin. For the curious, www.maxmars.it .

Does anybody know how much takes Apple to decide whether or not they will publish an app?

I want a completely customisable home screen. The 'entire screen full of icons' looks messy, and it might have been ok when that was your entire app list, but now you can have pages and pages, so let us have the choice.

Then you should be able to populate it not just with app icons, but with widgets for apps - eg ical events and new emails, so you can see at a glance whether to bother launching mail. Open that up to the app developers too, so you can have RSS feed readers or anything pushing data to the front screen.

I'd have it completely empty apart from the four at the bottom for main tasks. Then I'd have more space for wallpaper, and also some notifications (calendar reminders, new emails/texts).

One thing that I'd really like to see in 3.0 is an expansion of the Bluetooth capabilities. Let me copy random files to the phone over Bluetooth - even if I can't read Word docs or whatever, just let me copy stuff onto it to ferry files to and from work.

you should add piano and just make it a music sheet search program...unless theres already a piano sheet searcher

of course assuming it wouldnt take a lifetime to add piano or something, i dont know programming =P

Probably I'd need to make a separate notes input system (right now is best used with chords) and a quite different kind of visualization too.. Perhaps it should be a different app after all.

oh i assumed it was some kind of program that searches the internet for premade pdfs or something and displays that on the iphone. didnt even think about the whole create part.

Swipe your finger across the download, like you're writing on paper and crossing it out with a pen. That will bring up the delete option.

You're thinking about old batteries. This is new technology. Basically any battery in the last few years can be charged however you want and it won't negatively affect it at all.

I leave my touch plugged into the pc most times when I am not using it and no problems yet, also since it's not plugged into the mains I feel better about it.

As far as batter life is concerned, I go about 1-1/2 to 2 days max on my 3G. I'm not really on Safari much except to check some sports scores, but I'm on the Facebook app quite a bit, texting a lot, and email a lot. I'm probably on phone calls for maybe 30 minutes a day, if that. I have BT and WiFi off but Push and 3G on at all times too. I'm pretty content with the battery life but obviously would welcome any improvements.

Ah no, it's got its own little database and editing tools. It also has two separate search engines, one for lyrics and the other for lyrics + chords. :)

I never understand issues with batteries.

As long as the thing can survive a day with heavy use, that's all I ask. Not quite sure why charging your phone overnight isn't just the accepted method for recharging your phone.

I can go nuts with Safari over 3G and not have battery life issues. It's only when I'm playing games for extended sessions that the battery starts eating it.

Can I ask you guys something? How common is light leak? I've got a new phone and have 1 more day to exchange it. I have strands of light leaking from the volume button area. You have to look directly to see it in darkness. I've heard some people have light leaking from all sides. Mine's only from the left side. Should I exchange it or is it really not worth it?

Depends if this is really that much of an annoyance (and how great the leak). If it doesn't impact on day-to-day function. I never really understood the complaints about light-leak, but to be honest, I'm not sure if I have ever had it.

I think all you guys expecting/wanting MMS in 3.0 are setting yourself up for failure and are going to be pissed and disappointed on Tuesday. :lol

Because it's not going to happen? I don't really use MMS, but there IS a possibility. It would be interesting to see if Apple caves in. But more so on some other aspects.

If I'm disappointed, then I'm disappointed. Really though, I just cannot find an excuse for them to NOT add it at some point...so I have my hopes high. It might bite me in the ass, but it just seems so logical that I cannot get my hopes down.

I finally decided to jailbreak. Any must haves? I already have Winterboard and Categories (the reason I did it in the first place).

It is weird but certain apps really destroy the iPhone battery more than anything else you can do. Not sure what that is. I can surf the net for 6 hours on 2G or watch close to 6 hours of video, but if you start using certain apps (anything with GPS is the worst) you can almost see the battery life decreasing in real time.

That would be great along with the ability to copy and send contacts over BT.
