how do you know?

I don't know for a fact. I'm basing that on my opinion that in all these new iterations of the OS they haven't added it, so I don't think they are going to cave and add it at this point.

So today I got a replacement iphone, restored it to the backup that I made the previous night..

So my gmail wont work now, so I figure.. no big deal, Ill just resync my gmail account. So I go to make an email account on my phone and I keep getting the 'Cannot connect using SSL' error message. Ive changed nothing on my gmail account. Its set up for IMAP.. so for shits and grins I have a second gmail acct that I never use, same setting and it synced like a charm.. but for some reason my account that I need to get connected wont sync and I cant for the life of me figure it out... :-(

Help !

Same thing happened to my dad's gmail account when he first got a replacement phone. I think he either just turned it off and then on again or changed the password from the web and then changed it back to get it working.

Sync on my car and I've concluded:

iPhone:Touch::Sync:Voice

It fits like a glove with my music and phonebook. Feels like a very natural UI to the same device. So strange.

I finally decided to jailbreak. Any must haves?

SBSettings. Swipe your finger across the bar at the top of the phone at any time and this pops up...

I use it a lot for turning the wifi on and off on my Touch.

Hey guys, what's the best way to upgrade iPhone firmware while retaining all your jailbroken apps and settings? Things like SBSettings, Winterboard and all that.

Restoring a Jailbroken iPhone made Painless (relatively)

Finally scored a 2G for around $200 and got to unlocking and jailbreaking it, so awesome. Question, what's a good free program to create custom themes? I'm mostly interested in making my own icons, wallpaper, dock and lock screen.
you don't really need a program except winterboard. here is a nice tutorial. If you want to go all out you could check out iFuntastic which cost money.

i haven't seen a single good theme posted in this thread, that's for sure. :) and i keep seeing worse themes getting shown off on other forums like macrumors. i posted a couple here myself just for shits and giggles.

back when i had a 1st gen, jailbroken phone, i played around with themes and thought the "smoothicons" one wasn't terrible. or having a subtle textured background, like a dark perforated metal background instead of black.

but, the main problem with any cohesive theme is that the effect is broken by the presence of 3rd party apps for which there are no icons designed for them.

there was a post here a couple weeks ago that showed a slick looking blue, white and grey theme in which all the icons were more abstract and arranged differently.

now, aside from being a bit harder to navigate for most users, the problem with that theme is that the effect is completely ruined once you put an app on there that doesn't have the custom blue/grey/white icon.

and, at that point, i have to wonder why people would even bother trying to customize the UI so much when it's gonna be broken once you download a couple new apps.
My fave:

I like it in blue better, reminds me of my old 'indiglo' watch from grade school.

Like you said, the effect is broken when newer apps are added, but he nicely gave out the template and I've made pixel art creations of my own for some of them.

I have a question about rules and mail filtering with mobile me on the iphone.
On my computer I have a folder called notifications that all my facebook/myspace/youtube/photobucket stuff goes to.

But that folder doesn't appear on my iphone. All those emails just show up in the inbox folder.
How do I get it so that folder syncs on my iphone so I don't have all that crap flooding my inbox every 5 minutes?

I've got Sync in my car as well, and love it. I have an iPod connected at all times, and it works seamlessly with my iPhone too. Nice product.

Until MobileMe supports server-side filtering, it's going to do that. Mail filters are app-by-app right now.

Well, I think I got it figured out.
My Notifications folder I had was created before I signed up for MobileMe. So what I did was create a new folder on osx mail app and selected Mobile me as the location. Then went to my rules and just changed the folder everything went to.

A few minutes later there was a folder on my phone with all the messages in it.

Also, i just discovered the dock application on cydia.
I love it. I used poof to hide all my page 2 and 3 icons, and then categorized the hell out of them. Now I can instantly jump around from app to app without having to switch to the homescreen. It's pretty great.

Shit I'm planning on buying a Mac tomorrow as my PC is really starting to act up does that mean i'll have to reformat my iPhone and lose all my music? How does one go about getting all his music and contacts and shit like that over to the Mac if that's the case?

During a live taping of Diggnation, Kevin Rose revealed details about the expected "Copy and Paste" functionality coming in iPhone 3.0. World of Apple reports on the event with a link to a video of the moment (warning: strong language).

According to Rose, to invoke Copy and Paste, you simply double tap on the word, and a magnifier bubble will appear with two quotes that you can drag around your selection. Once you make your selection, you can copy, paste or cut. Rose has been accurate in the past with details about upcoming Apple product revisions. As well, we have also heard that Copy and Paste will be arriving in 3.0 alongside a much improved homepage/springboard with the ability to organize in categories.

Apple will be revealing iPhone 3.0 in detail on Tuesday, March 17th at a special media event.

BAM!

Edit: This how I envisioned it - pretty much like how tap and select works on a mac trackpad if you have it turned on.

"Rose has been accurate in the past" :lol Like 30%. Didn't he predict video conferencing and fm radio too?

Possibly. Yeah, not a totally awesome source, but the ability itself is nearly for certain in the next OS.

OMG. I just had a ghoulish thought. What if the next OS 3.0 is exclusive to the next iPhone? I've been wondering what hardware feature they could possibly add to make it enticing for people coming off their original contracts, and can't think of too many that would be a deal-maker. Of course, this alienates all current iPhone users, but they may do it - add enough features in the OS to warrant an upgrade in hardware.

This would really suck for current owners (having to buy a new one).

I only own a touch but how is copy/paste handy? for txt messages or login password details?

I'd love to see them add official folder management though, doubtful we will get such luxurys without jailbreaking but i'm against it :P plus I dev so.

I'm in the market... as it were... for a new car stereo, can anyone recommend a good one for my car? All I really care about is the Auxilary Port that I do not have at this time, but figured someone would know something..

Thanks GAF.

they wouldnt announce the OS now if that was the case.

You mean for exclusive to iPhone 3.0? Hmmm.... I was thinking it made perfect sense, as it gives time for people to get over the fact. But maybe you're right, because they don't want to pre-announce the next iPhone. Unless they do :o

How do I move my files to a Mac?

The easiest way is to let us do it. If you buy a Mac at an Apple Retail Store and bring in your old Mac or PC, a Genius can move all your files for you. Or you can use a USB or FireWire hard drive or a local network to transfer photos, music, documents, and more. For detailed information on moving your files to a Mac, visit our support site.

At first sync be prompted to delete the prior stuff or merge it to the new computer, select merge. That will work for your contacts, etc., but for your Music you're shit out of luck.

edit: Also what Gary Whitta said.

You should be able to just copy the entire "iTunes Music" folder into your new mac. Delete the one that's there. That's only if you have all your music in your itunes folder. To do that, there's an option in iTunes but I forget what it's called ;). You should be able to find it.

For contacts either export them to a file that Address Book can open or import them into Google Contacts and then you can set iTunes to sync with those.

You guys are all awesome, thanks a ton. So if I bring my PC with me tomorrow they should hook me all up with everything assuming I back up my iPhones contacts and stuff first? I would say about 90 percent of my music is on my pc as well as my iPhone so I guess that's no big deal really. I'll have to rerip and hunt down a few things here and there.

I'm reading conflicting things. First, Kevin Rose says that copy/paste and other functionality "comparable to the Palm Pre" is coming to iPhone 3.0.

However, I also read that there's no multitasking support.

So I'm wondering....how the hell does one claim to know anything about the Palm Pre's absolutely phenomenal interface, yet say the iPhone 3.0 is "comparable" to it with no background applications?

I guess we shall see this week...

maybe background notifications actually work as advertised

This has probably been done to death, but what do you guys think the chances are of Verizon picking up the iphone in the next couple years? I can't really see any reason why apple would want to keep it exclusive past the 2010 contract.

I suppose it depends on how much they regret passing on it the first time.

don't forget that it'll have both GSM and CDMA radios. :lol

the only stuff that Rose nailed recently was the itunes 8 announcement.

maybe he knows someone who works on iphone SW, not HW, but I'm still not convinced that anything he has said is actually legit.

He was 100% on the the latest nano as well, including leaked pictures.

I hope the copy/paste details are true.

It works exactly as I had thought it would, a way that many people had said, IMPOSSIBLE before.

Why? I have 16BG and it's never full and with apps like OrbLive it'll never need to be. If they lead off with storage increases, instead of relegating it to a quiet apple.com change, I'll be very disappointed

What's the point of copy/paste on the iPhone anyways?

There must be some application that I'm not using at all that some people are depending on or something, because I can't think of a time where I was like "WHERE THE FUCK IS COPY AND PASTE" for something.

Always good to add it, but I'm missing why it's important.

I see something I want to google on a web page, or an email I received.
I see something I want to add to an email from a webpage, from a note I made, or even a contact number.

Just off the top of my head. I've wanted to use it many times.

I find it weird that you have never found yourself wanting a copy and paste function.

Like what if someone sends you an address and you want to put it into Google to get directions from where you are? Instead of having to write it down or remember it you could just copy/paste as we have been doing on computers for the last 20 years.

Very possible that I'm in the very minute minority here, was just curious.

I have ~14GB of music alone. I need a 32GB iPhone.
