I, too, love double-tap zooming. I almost exclusively one-hand my phone, so pinch zooming just doesn't feel as good to me.

Just have cut and paste be triple tap. Problem solved.
They'll never do that. A lot of people don't even know about double tapping (surprisingly).

They make you triple tap on the Shuffle remote because that shit is already complex enough that it doesn't matter. The iPhone UI has been consistent for two years, and they're not going to do anything that wouldn't make sense without needing an explanation or demo.

I can see the double tap + hold method being used. It's already how the trackpads on the computers work.

Ideally I'd have an option. I never, ever double tap on the screen to zoom, so if they could just have a toggle switch in options for me to pick what a double tap does, I'd be happy.

Cut and paste doesn't matter that much to me anyway. A jailbroken phone can do it in text entry fields, and that's basically all I need.

You think re-purposing double tap is out of the question?

I'm interested to see what they emphasize tomorrow. I think we're likely to see one or two significant OS-level features (copy/paste, a push/background solution that pleases no one but fills the need well enough), as well as some SDK pr0n like read/insert access to the calendar store, various obj-c core foundation niceties that are currently lacking (better XML support would be much appreciated).

We might see a genuine Xcode feature or two inadvertently displayed that would normally have been revealed at WWDC but for the necessity of getting this SDK out the door well in advance of June 30.

I think it's very likely that they'll only unveil features in OS 3.0 that would require third party buy-in or regression testing. They should hold everything else back to the iPhone 2,1 hardware reveal that will probably come in early June; iPhone 3G's announcement was dull as hell, because there was hardly anything left to show after the OS 2.0 SDK release. It's also likely that the iPhone 2,1 hardware will enable a number of new features that we don't need to hear about now (video conferencing, video recording, full-blown multitasking, different resolution).

It also seems very likely that given the two year accounting, they're going to start differentiating subsequent phone models with provided software differences as well as hardware. Perhaps Spotlight for iPhone will only be available on the new 2,1 model, justified by the necessary processor power. Or a glitzier SpringBoard 2.0, etc. That should make the fans yelp.

I don't think it's a good idea for something as fundamental as copy and paste and the double tap command to be controlled via an option.

Too many options is a sign of a poor UI or a designer who couldn't make up their mind and figure out a better solution.

... what's funny to me is that I've spent so much time in this thread talking about copy/ paste UI issues and I don't even care that the iPhone doesn't have it. I've only had an opportunity to use that function around 5 or 6 times in over a year. :lol

* I want more access to the filesystem as a service.
* I know that Flash has been running on the iPhone and only requires a policy change by Apple to get it on the phone.
* We need the retarded GPS restrictions removed so we can make compelling business applications with the GPS.
* We need a better mechanism to ensure that applications aren't just bootlegged. Make them work for it at least :)
* We need a better version of Interface Builder
* We need a better integrated visual debugger on top of gdb
* Need ways to be notified by the OS by way of setting up our applications via a registry since background applications due indeed suck in a lot of ways. FOr all the garbage that J2ME had - they got background transients 100% correct.
* Audo/Video processing via AVAudioPlayer and the like are just awful and limited
* Need voice dialing back on the roadmap
* Need MMS OFF the roadmap to make time for things that make more sense
* Need to support video overlays
* Need to unify contacts/mail via a spotlight service so that people don't have to tap around all their email accounts or search through multiple address book applications
* Need better support for vibration and better granularity out of the accelerometer
* For the love of God add an ORM layer on top of sqlite3 - its like I've gone back to 1980
* Need to fix the big where viewWillAppear/viewDidAppear is breaking UITableView reloadData
* Need to fix the audio streaming interface so people aren't dependent on Quicktime or raw byte processing
* Need to fix the hack that people have to do to dismiss the keyboard when entering text into the keyboard (which is one of the reasons why copy-paste can't work today)
...

my list is actually quite long I'm starting to see :)

The OS and SDK will allow for more scaleability to accommodate different resolutions and screen sizes. ;)

I'm keeping low expectations because whatever gets announced is going to leave someone disappointed that their most-wanted feature didn't make it. Of course, Apple could blow us all away by justifying the 3.0 designation with MMS, copy and paste, background apps, tethering, expanded Bluetooth, landscape Mail keyboard, etc, etc, etc and leaving nothing for people to complain about.

Either way I'm going to hate that it's pre-announced like this, both because we'll have to wait for it and it'll be like the clusterfuck when 2.0 came out.

People having over 100 gigs of music is crazy to me.

How much money have you spent on music and how long did it take you to get all that?

i dont have 100gb (around 20) but you can cd's cheap as hell off amazon prime. i just bought 5 old dancehall cd's a few weeks back for under $20 (woulda been ~10 if it wasnt for shipping). I got one of them brand new for .87 lol

Yes.

But where is that guy who ate crow after the iPhone nano was missing last time, then came back when new rumours surfaced to nonsensically rub our faces in it?

I think that was Terrel.

he's shown up in the thread since then but hasn't mentioned the need for Apple to make an internet-castrated iPhone nano since.

For the record, I think the closest thing Apple will make to an iphone "nano" is use the current 3G model, but further price reduced, in a year or two. functionality won't be cut.

Thousands and thousands of pounds. I am 31 this year and have been buying CD's since I was 15.

For the first time I'm hearing ads for an individual app this week. The Ticket (Dallas sports radio) is running ads for Wunder Radio, the iPhone (and now apparently Windows smartphone) application that streams internet radio to the iPhone. Pretty interesting, I wonder how well that sucker is selling.

Bold ones are what I'd really emphasize too. There's no fundamental reason why some of the Core Data niceties couldn't make it to the phone's OS. After going from JPA 2.0 to SQL-strewn spaghetti code, that alone is reason enough for me to want to entirely avoid writing a serious iPhone app.

Visual debugger in gdb that would attempt to replicate a lot of the niceties of the Eclipse debugger would be nice.

I'll add one to your list, though:

* Xcode method name auto-completion in implementations and of protocols. No idea how the hell they've made it 10 years with such rudimentary refactoring tools.

Yeah, I heard that too a couple days ago.

Anyone know of any good FREE Video recording app for Iphone 3g?

I just downloaded a program from cydia called videorecorder3g and it has super good quality but it costs 19 dollars and I wanted to check first if there is another good video recorder out there before I pay for this one

I follow engadget because they upload photos live from apple events: http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/17/live-from-apples-iphone-os-3-0-preview-event/

Same with Giz: http://live.gizmodo.com/

I'll be watching Ars too - looks great. Anyone know a good place to check from the iPhone itself? I'll be at lunch for the first part of the presentation.

I'm staying in this thread.

C'mooon background apps.
I realize I can do this with a Cydia app, but would rather have something official.

Mother fucking...I have a meeting from 1 - 2 so no following along for me unless I can sneakily pay attention and watch a live blog at the same time.

Here's hoping for some awesome.

I'm trying!

It's pointing to an old cell phone I have and I can't delete it and add my new one! FUCK MY LIFE!

I can follow it using Twinkle (Twitter app), but not through SMS. At least it's something.
