Fuck 1st gen iPhoners! MUHAHAH!

...it's OK, we'll all update to the new iPhone anyways that'll come with 3.0 installed by default, right?

...right?

Fuck 1st genners! 3G was the most important feature ever, you should have known! YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOOOOOOOOOOOWN!!!!!!

Feel free to upgrade now. I'm sure that won't come back to bite you in the ass in the summer. Nope, not at all. ;)

MMS, copy & paste, landscape keyboard and forwarding are just what I wanted.

Search, Push msgs for apps and voice recording are massive bonuses.

All I need now is video recording/streaming and a decent camera (and the removal of size limits on data over 3g[App Store/podcasts])

I'd upgrade but considering Im not on AT&T anymore; 3g, a2dp, and mms aren't going to make me give up unlimited everything for $60 to be raped by AT&T's bullshit pricing scheme.

They are stating it's a hardware limitation, same with stereo bluetooth. Time to upgrade.

lol hardware limitation, so my POS razr is more powerful than an iPhone? AWESOME!

If the new phone is a marked improvement, I'll sell my 3G and upgrade again.

I hope the 3.0FW leaks soon.
I hope this means an official lastfm app that can track your music becomes available.

Yep, you should sell your iPhone and go back to using your RAZR every day.

Tobor, you know it isn't a hardware limitation.

Lots more good info:

11:33 David Chartier: First question: Time Magazine - why did it take so long to get copy and paste?

11:33 David Chartier: Forstall says it's tough to navigate security issues and nail a simple UI.

11:34 David Chartier: USA Today: Video is still a black hole because of Flash. Is Flash coming at all?

11:34 David Chartier: Schiller says no announcements about Flash today. Forstall says there are plenty of easy workarounds for presenting video, H.264, other encodings that don't need Flash.

11:34 David Chartier: HTTP Streaming is also another option.

11:35 David Chartier: Nike Electronics: Asking about P2P, if it will support other devices.

11:36 David Chartier: Forstall explains that P2P wireless is for iPhones, iPod touch, Dock connector is for accessories and other devices.

11:37 David Chartier: MarketWatch: P2P again, are people able to trade files - music files - over connection?

11:37 David Chartier: Joswiak says they can stream files.

11:38 David Chartier: Creative Strategies asks about tethering.

11:38 David Chartier: Forstall explains what data tethering is for laptops, says tethering is supported in 3.0. Also working around carriers around the world to see when the networks can support it.

OK, well I'd say the reveal met all my expectations. would still like content search in Mail...

I do wish they had cut down on a couple of the demos. just from a pacing POV. it ran a bit long.

Isn't that because mail isn't downloaded on the phone, just the headers.
Once you open an email, it quickly downloads it.

Yeah, cause that's exactly what i meant when replying to your comment. There's not a hardware issue as MMS is done in software, just like every other app. SwirlyMMS proves it works. It's a bs excuse from apple. a2db I'd understand as the actual hardware in the 2g might be different from 3g, but the same can't be said for a software application that connects to a web server and downloads some files.

....wheres my facepalm compilation jpg

Yes and no. There is a good bit of mail sitting in the database on your phone. It simply tosses it from time to time since it can't hold your entire INBOX. But yes, they wouldn't be able to do a search over everything.

yeah but once it's download it stays, at least for 50 messages I think. they could index the messages you've already dl'ed.

I knew you wouldn't be far behind!

Its the reason I hadn't posted in the thread until now :) I'd been refreshing to grab those early download slots since I'm sure its going to be an hour or two to download.

More QA.
So no push yet even with 3.0?

11:39 David Chartier: BBC asks about new hardware. Schiller says nothing to announce.

11:39 David Chartier: Also asks about netbooks, nothing to announce.

11:40 David Chartier: New question: Bluetooth human interface profile for external keyboards.

11:40 David Chartier: Forstall says nothing to announce.

11:40 David Chartier: Next question: Uptime for Push Notification, what about developers.

11:40 David Chartier: Can't promise anything.

11:40 David Chartier: Q: What about third party microphones.

11:41 David Chartier: Joswiak clarifies that voice recording is supported for third party microphones.

11:41 David Chartier: Even on the iPod nano.

11:41 David Chartier: Engadget: Are you addressing any performance issues with app lag, load times?

11:42 David Chartier: Forstall says we take performance very seriously. Addressing it in a number of ways.

11:42 David Chartier: Snell from Macworld: Compatibility questions. What about Bluetooth and the iPod touch.

11:43 David Chartier: Second gen iPod touch can get some of that functionality unlocked, Joswiak says.

11:43 David Chartier: Wired: P2P, can an app access someone's iTunes librayr so you can get access to tunes from nearby users?

11:44 David Chartier: Built-in iPod app does not provide that service. Forstall sees applications for using one phone to browse the contents of another.

11:45 David Chartier: Streaming? No streaming APIs.

11:45 David Chartier: Technologizer: Apple has been criticized over dev process, which apps are acceptable. Any comments?

11:46 David Chartier: Schiller: Response has been great, Apple trying to balance developer response and assuring quality for customers. Numbers speak for themselves, we've improved the turnaround time.

11:46 David Chartier: There are some things we need to check and filter for.

Wait does that mean Amazon and Stanza can sell books through the App store?!

Also wiki mobile or Wikipanion?

amazon has a kindle app so you read kindle ebooks u get from amazon.com. now u can purchase it from ur phone instead of doing it from amazon.com

Amazon will sell books from directly within the Kindle app. I'd be shocked if they didn't have it ready at the 3.0 launch.

all in all good update, especially spotlight. that's the one thing that made less sense than copy/paste mms. it's such an apple feature that it's just awkward for it to no be there. was kinda hoping for a palm pre synergy implimentation for contacts, but either way i'm happy except for the mms bullshit

Just saw this on Apple's SDK page:

"Using the new External Accessory framework, your application can now communicate with "Made for iPod" hardware accessories attached to iPhone or iPod touch through either the 30-pin dock connector or wirelessly using Bluetooth."

Does this explain why there is an actual hardware chip in the Shuffle headphones? Not that we'd be developing for Shuffle, but just that Apple wants these chips in all approved devices no matter what it is.

Thanks, going to read a book through the kindle app and see how that goes.

My problem with spotlight is that I don't want just searching through contacts, sms to be that easy. I've got search on jailbreak but I've tied that with lockdown (and hidden to boot). i'd get into too much trouble if spotlight works too well :lol

Don't get your logic here. It doesn't say anything about the headphone jack.

So do I have to pay $99 for this developer membership? Or can I use my free Developer account? Or do I have to wait till summer for 3.0?

EDIT: guess I'm waiting till summer :(

I'm still kind of irked by no backgrounding whatsoever. :[
Pretty slick update though, can't wait to see the new hardware.

Push announcements today is not enough for you? It does pretty much the exact same thing.

No. It's not enough for me. And NO it's NOT the same thing.
BeeJiveIM takes anywhere from 5 to 15 seconds to load, depending on how social I am.
Sure, it will be excellent to get notifications I have a new message while I'm browsing the web, but it will still take ~20 seconds to jump back and forth.. which is pretty much laughable. You still can't do 2 things at once. Which sucks.

Hey, it's a great update. But it's still not perfect.

They had to leave something for people to complain about! :lol

The new updated whiner list:

1. Background apps
2. Video recording
3. DLC microtransactions(New complaint for 3.0!)

I could also see push updates getting really annoying.
Say I'm chatting with 3 or 4 people. And exit out to browse GAF for a few minutes.
Am I just going to get clobbered by the blue "close/reply" box everytime I get a new message?

Obviously, that could be fixed if you can change the preferences.. but it's something to keep in mind.

I don't really think it's just "one more thing to complain about." It's a valid concern.
Push notifications are a great solution to some apps but for an app as crucial as instant messaging -one that will no doubt get flooded with notifications it's far from perfect.

In fact it might be more annoying than it is helpful. I have push email on my phone and it doesn't get the message the instant it's sent. There is anywhere from half a second to a two second delay. When you're IMing with people a lot of times you'll get 5 or 6 messages in the span of a second (not every second obviously) but occasionally messages come in at an extremely rapid pace and I DON'T expect push notifications to deal with that gracefully at all.

I didn't expect or even hope that I would be able to have all 30 apps on my iphone open at once. But I do believe a more elegant solution could have been found. And yes, I'm a bit disappointed about it.
