This last comment falsifies the whole blurb...:lol Apple will never sell such a product for $99.

Apple sell Blutooth headsets for $99. The slightest notion that Apple would sell a mobile computing device for $99 is absurd.

I moved to Japan 3 days ago and bought a white 16GB iPhone.

I don't know if I got all the details right when buying into my Softbank contract, but because my visa is only good for 2 years (March 21 2009 - March 21, 2011), I was ineligible for the free iPhone deal because 2 years = 27 months for Softbank. Also, I couldn't pay off the phone's cost (about ¥42000) in increments because my visa ends two days before the contract. :lol

I think the monthly contract is a good deal, though. Moreover, even if Softbank is the worst of the major Japanese cell phone carriers, their network easily makes AT&T's look shittier than it already is.

Next time someone flies into Japan on a new long-term visa... add an extra month or so to the intended length of stay. :P

No complaints though, overall.

can anybody recommend some good Winterboard themes?

just downloaded Glass Orb and im blown away

or any other jailbreak programs that are must haves?

Just got laid off...

Can I use the Iphone 3g without the $30/month data plan? I have hot spots all around.
Or is it only the original Iphone?

I know I could find the answer with google, forum, etc searching but I have too much on my mind and too much to do. Sorry.

call ATT and say that you lost the phone and have another phone to use. give them the IMEI of said phone and theyll basically take off the data plan.

Has this not been posted yet?

he infamous RipDEV have released a Mac only tool that allows you to download Cydia and Installer4 packages to your laptop and install them via USB to a jailed device. However, as many of us know there's always a cost in using RipDEV's releases. in this case, $7 to download the Mac software.

'InstallerApp comes with free built-in Pusher — software that can install Installer.app on your iPhone without jailbreaking' says the RipDev blurb. 'By default Pusher will not install a set of command-line utilities and unlock the system partition as it’s usually is done by some popular jailbreak solutions and may lead to additional instability of the iPhone software, but it will do so if that is what you want.'

Given RipDEVs reputation I'm sitting on the fence on this one until the community provides some feedback... but it looks interesting to say the least.

iPHONE ALL BUT CONFIRMED FOR LAUNCH IN CHINA

Link here

China Unicom did nothing to dispel rumors that it plans to be Apple's iPhone partner in China by posting images and specifications of the iPhone 3G on Tuesday.
The details (in Chinese), spotted by IDG News Service, are perhaps the strongest sign that China's second-largest carrier has won the deal to supply the iPhone to the world's largest mobile phone market. At this point, some may wonder why China Unicom wouldn't just wait for the new iPhone that is almost universally expected to arrive sometime around the middle of this year, but Chinese media reports have suggested that China Unicom and Apple reached a breakthrough in their negotiations just last week, and China Unicom plans to launch a 3G network in May.
Apple and China Mobile, the country's largest carrier, have negotiated off and on for over a year about bringing the iPhone to China but have thus far failed to reach a deal. Part of the problem with the China Mobile talks was that the large carrier reportedly wanted some control over the App Store in China, as well as a version of the iPhone made to work with a homegrown 3G standard used only by China Mobile.
China Unicom has 130 million subscribers before which Apple can push the iPhone, as compared to AT&T's 77 million subscribers.
Apple officially beat Google to the Chinese market. Who would have thought that after China Mobile shat all over them for a year while praising Android?
Ahhh well, good for them. Apple enters China and makes into the major leagues of the mobile phone market.

Slingplayer Mobile submitted to App Store
Get ready, BlackBerry users, because your days are officially about to become less productive (or, at the very least, your mass transit commutes). You too, iPhone types -- not to say you didn't already have enough time-wasting apps cluttering that 8 to 16GB wasteland you call "storage" in your pocket -- because SlingPlayer Mobile is destined for both of these platforms. BlackBerry's already had it since December in beta form, but they're now at a stable 1.0 release; and speaking of 1.0 releases, that iPhone version Sling's been talking up for a while now has now been submitted to Apple's App Store for approval, so we hope we'll be seeing that on the open market shortly. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have some Dora to watch on the Bold.

I've been waiting for this since it was rumored. I might finally switch to Atnt

So, the Last.fm app has been taken down in Canada? And I just read that they are starting to charge to stream the Last.fm radio in every country except germany, uk and usa. I just restored my iphone so when I went to try and download the app again and it says it's not available in Canada. Fuck this shit. Is this old news?

So I give them the IMEI of a spare phone and keep my sim card in the 3g iphone?

And when I want to use the data plan on my iphone again, I call back with the iphone IMEI?

yea, just give them the phone number that you have, and the IMEI of a spare phone and they should take it off.

never went backwards though, but i assume u can just call and say you want a data plan.

keep in mind this was with the first gen...so things might have changed, but i doubt it.

Can someone help me find a "TV information" app?

Not TV listings - those are easy to find.

I'm looking for an app that lets me easily browse something like the TV.com episode database listings, where they have information, allusions, trivia, names, and other such stuff about individual TV episodes.

Anything good like that?

Wikipedia apps are usually best for that.
I use wikipedia pro.

Every other TV app I've tried is slow as shit and usually doesn't have the info you want.

well, MovieStar links to the IMDb and all the trivia listed there for TV shows and movies. it's free

itunes link

might be what you're looking for

The Wikipedia would probably work better. Does that IMDb app take you directly to the site in Safari/built-in browser? Or does it take the data and re-form it better for the iphone?

it takes the data and displays it in the app
its actually quite slick... but imdb is kind of lame.

Nope. Says so in the link.

Jailbreak time if you'd like that functionality.
Skype over 3G is pretty great. Yay, I never go over my minutes now.

I wonder how well this new Skype app works.

I'm probably going to pick up the Etymotic HF2 earphones. Anyone have experience with these? My sister-in-law is an audiologist and recommends them; I'm inclined to believe her.

The DirecTV app is up.

^^^that's hot. figures bitch ass time warner would be last to do something like this. they seem to always be dead last in deploying shit i could actually use.

I have the sunburst for Docks 2.0 set up to show recently used apps as a shortcut. But I also put those apps in Categories' folders and Dock 2.0 only shows the folder where the app was opened from not the app itself (apps opened from SBsettings 'dock' don't show up at all). Is there a way to fix this?

I'm trying to use Stacks and Springjumps together. Although the page jumps work fine from springboard they aren't working from the Stacks button. Is there a way to set this up?

If the apple netatalk is installed does your phone show up for every laptop on the local network you are connected to? Is there a toggle to switch this on/off when needed?

(We were talking about iTab, sorry about not seeing this earlier)

I'm not a very good guitar player or anything but I can see this being handy as hell. Thanks!

An update is coming with a brand new visualization engine. Also, if you have questions / critics / requests, let me have them. Thanks!

So what's the skinny on Skype?

I see lots of 'it's crashing, it sucks' comments. I've got it now, and it seems to run as advertised. I even called myself, which is a first.

It doesn't work on my Jailbroken phone.
But I've read lots of comments around the net that it does work on JB phones.

It seems to be a case by case thing.
Also, supposedly on 3.0 you can make calls over 3G.

Cool I guess, but I don't really have any use for skype.

Fair enough. I'm in the us at the moment, and I'm only on prepaid with t mobile. Calling my family back in new Zealand for 2c a minute would be sweet. I might tryit tonight! If it works well, skype would be a godsen for me.

It works, but not well at the moment. The person I tested w/ said he couldn't hear me most of the time, and one time his skype crashed. lol.
(edit; yes I'm on 3.0)

That DirecTV app looks slick. I am hoping the Uverse one is as good. Currently there is a web-based AT&T/Yahoo interface that is slow, basic and really needs an update. You can access it with iPhone and there is a mobile view, but simple things like searching for a show via text can lead to some weird results.

MLB At Bat 09 is out. Speculation was rampant that it would be $15 to $20, since it has Gameday Audio added in this year (which costs $15 per year on MLB.com).

Surprise! The app is only $10! And you can listen to the live audio feed from either team's radio coverage. Not to mention all the video highlights and stuff it had last year. Definitely a pleasant surprise.

aaaand, the version without audio (or video, i think) but with the pitch by pitch screens is free.

very nicely done by MLB. thumbs up.

GAFers. I'm about to roll out a series of applications and I'm looking for testers. If you're running OS 2.2.1 or OS 3.0 (definitely you guys I need) and you want to participate in the alpha test, please PM me your device ID.

You can get to your device ID in iTunes. When your device is plugged in, click on it. Then on the device information screen you should see your device ID. If you see your serial number, click on it and it will show you the device ID.

How is it that the calender app is able to change its icon to display the current day and date, yet other apps can't? I think it would be so cool if the weather app displayed the current local temperature and an icon of the weather instead of it always showing 73° and sunny.

There is a jailbreak app for that. And for the clock as well

Does anyone have these?

Is the microphone and clicker completely compatible with the 3G?
I'm thinking about splurging and love Shure's build quality, sound and fit; I'd much prefer these to apple's in-ear headphones.

The head phones or the clicker?

I have the clicker, and I use it with the Shure Se210s. They work well enough. I don't make calls all that much, so not sure if the microphone is good, I just got them for the clicking ability. No volume controls suck, but it works for everything else. A little on the 'big' side. Perfect length cord, though.

I bought one of these the same day as my iphone. It's pretty much perfect for what I need - the microphone is the best I've used for a cell extension (as someone who has to make international calls all the time, this is pretty important), and if the cable breaks, well, I'm just out the $40 (CDN) rather than whatever the hell my actual headphones cost - a huge issue with those damn Sony Ericcsson phones. Clicking functionality works just fine with 3G, kinda wish it had volume controls, or even the whole little dpad the SE sets had.

I agree that the mic end is bigger than I expected, but it's not exactly calling attention to itself either. I suppose my only complaint is that the clip is on the cable, which means the extension is always carrying the cable weight. (It's perfect for Sony headphones though, which always cut short and then use an extension cable - this takes the place of the extension.)
